Happy Springsmut, alwaysasnapefan!
Author: [info]snegurochka_lee
Recipient: [info]alwaysasnapefan
Title: Hunter and Game
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Snape/Fleur
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Summary: Severus Snape used to think that he was the only spy capable of working against the Dark Lord. He was wrong.
Warnings: Implied infidelity (re: Bill/Fleur), although that isn't the focus of the story. DH-compliant. I assume that Fleur was 17, and thus of age, in GoF.
Word Count: 12,800
Author's Notes: For [info]alwaysasnapefan, who asked for this pairing, "taken seriously." I loved the implicit challenge of that, as well as the challenge of keeping it canon-compliant. Hope you enjoy! Many thanks to beta X for all her help.

Hello mystery author! I just wanted to tell you that I emailed [info]alwaysasnapefan to let her know her fic was posted, because she's at school and has limited internet. She asked me to tell you that she hopes to be able to read this on Monday. :)

And now my own comment-amazing job making what I thought might be unbelievable seem to be canon. This Fleur is strong and clever, an excellent spy, using her charms when she needs them. Her relationship with Severus is so perfect-both necessity and desire driving them both. I love the way you told this backward, it worked really well. Very nice work indeed.

Thank you very much! I'm glad the backwards thing wasn't too strange -- the story seemed to call for it -- and I'm so glad you liked Fleur! She can be a tough character to make likeable. :/

And thanks so much for the heads up about the recipient! I would have bitten my nails down all weekend wondering if she hated it. :)

Mystery Author,

This fic was absolutely incredible. I don't usually like the backward timeline style, but it really really worked here. It seemed like nothing was being taken away by the style, like the entire thing flowed well no matter which way you put it, and the last part about him pushing her from his mind? Very nicely done.

They were so tender and you could see the way they cared about each other or, rather, feel it. It was smutty enough, and meaningful. It struck me as very in-character on both parts and there's no way you could have known that I used to theorize about Fleur playing a bigger part than we saw her play in taking down Voldemort, but you wrote it for me anyway!

It was two of my very, very favorite characters caught up in a game of love and war. I liked the way it started, with her thinking about him, but I was hooked by the way he projected awkwardness to Voldemort in that second scene.

I can't wait to find out who you are. I'm sorry about the delay. I'd read it over my phone, but I had no way of writing a proper comment like this.

- Thank you so much,
alwaysasnapefan

Oh good, thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. When I saw your request, I was hell-bent on writing you Snape/Black non-con, one of my favourite pairings and genres! But this story popped into my head as I glanced at your "Snape/Fleur" idea, and so it demanded to be told. I'm glad the structure worked. It wasn't meant to be a gimmick, but rather, I figured with a pairing this rare, one of the tensions driving the story could be, "How did they first get together?" which then happens at the "end." At any rate, yes, I'm glad it worked!

I do love Fleur and wish we'd seen more of her in canon. The fact that she was a Tri-Wizard champion and trusted enough to fly with the Seven Potters convinced me that she has real skills -- enough for fanfic authors to take and run with, at least, even if JKR didn't!

Anyway, thanks again, and I'm so glad you liked it. :)

I'm sure the Snack would have been amazing, since it's you, but I do prefer consensual, and plus Snacks are so much more common than Snape/Fleur and I just love rare pairings. I'm glad you decided on this pairing and this gem.

I absolutely adore this. Both Snape and Fleur are favorite characters of mine. They're in-character and believable. The whole story was beautiful and sad, and the backward timeline works really well. okay, I'm done rambling, now.

Thank you so much! I had a great time writing this but feared the pairing might scare readers off. I'm delighted to hear from readers who enjoyed it! :)

[info]ariadneelda pointed me to this since I've been absent for the past months and thus missed it - and boy am I glad I got to read this. I love the backward timeline, which always strikes me as a stylistic element with which interesting things can be done, if you know how to do it. The story unfolds fluently and, I think, could be read in any order without really confusing things. Still I think if this had been told forward, something would have been taken away from the atmosphere. It feels tragic, but the tragedy seems to have less impact because we descend from it, kind of. You tell their story very matter of fact, and that seems, above everything, so very fitting. I've no idea if that makes sense? Heh.

Anyway. I've always loved your Fleur, and what you do with her here is magnificent. The way she uses her magic, how it brings her together with Severus, how strong and independent and persistent she is - yes. That's how she's got to be, isn't it? She does what she feels she needs to do despite any personal afflictions. Someone on LJ said you write her like a young, beautiful Snape, and that rings very true to me, somehow.

This is one of the pairings I've desired to read for quite some time, and I am so glad you got inspired to write them. Gorgeous work.

Thank you very much! I'm glad you found your way here. :) (Note to self: must remember to repost at my journal! *headdesk*) I'm glad the backwards thing worked, too. I was trying to find a way to keep this rarepair interesting, and I thought, well, if the mystery of the whole thing is sort of based on how they possibly got together, then that should come at the end. :) A bit gimmicky, but I thought it might work for this pairing. Great to hear that you enjoyed it.

Fleur is always such fun to write, so I'm glad she worked for you, too! She was definitely meant to parallel Snape himself in the first war. I've never thought of the pairing before, but once I started writing, it didn't strike me as even that odd a match! Now this might be my personal canon for them. :) I'm so glad you liked it. It's good to see you!
