The kitchen was small and dingy. One of the two men inside it was looking around with disdain. He was bedraggled, skinny, and filthy, with bruises and cuts all over him. The other man was dressed all in black, and looked rather imposing and grumpy.
"Just so we're clear on this, I am no happier about this than you are. I dislike my home being used as a safe house. But since you are here, you can, at least, make yourself useful."
"Doing what, exactly?"
"I have a list of potions the Dark Lord needs. You're going to help me make them."
"Am I allowed to clean myself up first?"
"Please do. You smell."
The bedraggled man smiled sardonically.
"You try spending a year in Azkaban. Be thankful they let me bathe last month."
"I really don't care about your problems. Just clean yourself up. Bathroom's through there, and your wife brought you a suitcase. I'll be upstairs in my lab when you're done. Knock first."
The grumpy man turned and walked out of the room. The bedraggled man ran his hand through hair that might once have been light-colored, and walked out of the kitchen towards the bathroom. He walked into the bathroom, and stopped dead. It was filthy. Water stains, mildew, soap scum, and was that a cockroach? He shuddered. Obviously the place hadn't been cleaned in a long, long time. He sighed. If he wanted to get clean, it wasn't going to happen in here. Not by a long shot. He was just going to have to ask for some cleaning supplies and get this place clean first.
He walked upstairs and knocked on the closed door.
"I need cleaning supplies."
"Why in Merlin's name do you need cleaning supplies? There's soap in the bathroom."
"And grime, gunk, and roaches. I refuse to bathe in there till it's clean."
"Malfoy, you've been here less than five minutes, and you're already trying my patience."
"I'll clean it myself, Severus, just tell me where the supplies are."
Behind the door, Malfoy could hear Snape rummaging around. Then the door opened.
"Here, rags and cleaning supplies. You know you'll have to scrub by hand. I'm certainly not letting you borrow my wand."
Malfoy sighed, took the supplies, and crossed the landing to the head of the stairs.
"Figured as much. Thank you."
"Honestly Malfoy, you're just odd."
"And you're ridiculously messy. How you live like this is beyond me."
Suddenly Snape was in front of him, shoving him against the wall, a wand in his face.
"Listen, you spoiled brat, not all of us have manors and house-elves to serve our every whim. If you want to clean, fine. You're now the maid. I expect to be able to see my face in the bathroom tile by the time you're done. Then you can do the kitchen and the rest of the house. Maybe I should even get you one of those little outfits. Just remember: this is my house, and you're supposed to be helping me. I'm sure you wouldn't like me to tell the Dark Lord you're being uncooperative."
Malfoy paled under the grime. He put a hand up in a gesture of surrender.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hit a nerve. I'll go clean now."
"And you can keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself. I have no interest in them. Keep your mouth shut, do what I tell you, and we'll get along fine."
Snape released Malfoy and went back into his lab. Malfoy stood at the top of the stairs, massaging his throat where Snape had pressed against it. He walked slowly back downstairs, and went into the bathroom. He set the supplies down, ran some water, and started scrubbing.
