Remus followed the shabby cat because it wouldn't stop clawing at his leg until he did. He would have sworn it was Minerva except for its matted grey fur. The persistent feline led him from the reconstruction of the North Tower into the Forbidden Forest.
After a long walk through autumn leaves, the cat padded up the steps of a ramshackle cottage. The door was cracked open and his guide settled just outside, her mission complete.
Inside, Remus found scuffled footprints in the dust, which he followed. He found Severus splayed out on a bed, surrounded by empty potion bottles, the skin around the ripped collar of his robes smooth but white as milk.
Severus' chest rose and fell, but his eyes remained closed as he mumbled a hoarse, "About time, Lupin". Remus' heart stuttered, then began beating strongly, as if it had only just started again since the battle.
The grey cat saw Remus fall on his knees at Severus' side and take up the ex-spy's hand, pressing it to his face. She left the room without sound.
Outside, the cat shivered, grey melting to reveal tabby fur. As she slinked away, Minerva McGonagall thought transfiguration wasn't her only area of expertise.
