HP10k Showcase Wrap Up and Master List

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

And so we conclude the [info]hp10k_showcase. When we all first decided to embark on this small project, we wanted to combine our love of writing with a cause near and dear to our hearts. Because it was quite different from other fandom projects, we were uncertain of what the interest would be. We are touched and overwhelmed by the generosity and outpouring of support from all of the thoughtful comments on our awareness posts, stories, and art, to the watchers, readers, reccers and even the lurkers.

We know that real life often collides with free time to read, so below is the master list for the showcase, so that you can catch up on whatever sparks your interest whenever you have some time. Remember to check the fic header for ratings, side pairings, and warnings. Be it a day from now, a month from now, or a year from now, we hope you enjoy these stories and art from this collaborative showcase. Sincerest and heartfelt thank you from all of us.

Oldenuf2nb's HP10K Showcase art

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
As part of my participation in the [info]hp10k_showcase , it was my honor and privilege to work with three of the talented authors, and very good friends, who wrote brilliant stories. I loved every bit of this, from getting to read their stories early, to being inspired by what they wrote to draw something after the showcase began. I know that there has already been lots of conversation about the showcase, but I merely want to add this;

The showcase was begun out of friendship, and shared experience. My mother used to say; "it'll take you five minutes, if you look, to find someone who's cross is heavier than yours". I don't know that any of us feel as if we bear crosses, but we've all had our challenges, and we all had issues that touched us, and moved us, and changed us. Whether we personally experienced the causes we highlighted, or were moved to want to help with them, the point it that it really has been about wanting to bring attention to something that mattered to us. Fandom is a wonderful, diverse, and accepting playground, and I, for one, am grateful to have found such a generous group of readers and watchers. Thank you, to all of you, for making this possible. That having been said, here's the arts!

Congratulations and thanks to all the [info]hp10k_showcase writers - you have put together a really great collection of stories for the HP community and raised some really thought-provoking issues. One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This - Harry/Draco

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Title: One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This
Author: Geoviki
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Word Count: about 9,200
Summary: Secrets and imp magic make a bad combination, and Draco will never, ever forgive Blaise for any of this.

I am writing to raise awareness of: Juvenile (Type 1) Diabetes, although this story isn't related to my cause.

Author's Note: The title is a translation of a line from Virgil's Aenead: Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit. It's also the title of the most recent album by the New York Dolls. Another ways to put it is: Someday we'll look back on this and laugh.

Many thanks to my beta, [info]novembersnow, who did a great job of pointing out the weaknesses, even though I didn't give her much time. Thanks also to [info]parthenia14 for the Britpicking.

For those of you who've lost your school textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them:

The crup resembles a Jack Russell terrier, except for the forked tail. The crup is almost certainly a Wizard-created dog, as it is intensely loyal to wizards. It is a great scavenger. Crup owners are legally obligated to remove the crup's tail with a painless Severing Charm, lest Muggles notice it.

The imp is sometimes confused with the pixie. It is about seven inches tall and is coloured dull brown or black. Imps live in damp or marshy areas. It has a somewhat slapstick sense of humour and is often found near river banks, where it will amuse itself by pushing and tripping the unwary.

Title: A Tale of Two Tents
Author: [info]who_la_hoop
Pairings: Harry/Draco
Rating: A strong PG-13
Warnings: Epilogue-compliant(ish!), much silliness, incompetent fist-fights and a distressing lack of jokes involving the words and phrases 'tent' 'your pocket' and 'or are you just pleased to see me'. I couldn't even fit in a pun on the word 'camp'. How rubbish am I?
Word count: ~10,350 (alas, even when I try to write a short fic, I still can't get it to fit in one post! :D)
Summary: When Scorpius and Al take their parent's rivalry to a whole new level, Hogwarts is forced to intervene. Or, how Harry and Draco went camping, encountered mud, and managed to survive with all their limbs intact.
Author's notes: Thanks to the hp10k gang for being generally awesome and putting up with me, even though I have been more than usually AWOL of late. Thanks also to bryoneybrynn, whose prompt from ages back inspired this fic. Tragically, I actually made myself laugh a couple of times whilst writing this, so I hope you'll all laugh along with me <3

I am writing to raise awareness of eating disorders – although my fic has nothing to do with the subject whatsoever, being about camping, mud and general mayhem :D

Word count: approx 8,600

Author's notes: Thanks to my incredible beta team, [info]eeyore9990 whose constant reassurance kept me writing and [info]gabe_speaks whose red pencil I love to hate. Also to [info]sansa1970 for her valuable opinion and to all the 10k showcase participants whose mere presence made me go outside my comfort zone and try something new. And gigantic thanks to [info]oldenuf2nb - not only for holding my hand and listening to me whine about my sanity in writing this pairing for the first time, but for the fabulous art that absolutely makes this story come to life. Her cause is AIDS Awareness/Prevention/Research

Awareness post: Breast Cancer Research

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
[info]marguerite_26 is writing for Breast Cancer Research.

One in 9 women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime. One in 28 will die of it. These people are our mothers, our sisters, our aunts, our nieces, our friends, ourselves.

Currently, the precise causes of breast cancer are not known. Breast cancer is believed to be a result of interactions among inherited and environmental factors. We need to know more. Through research we will find ways to prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance the quality of life for those living with this disease. Breast cancer death rates have declined in all ages combined and in every age group since the mid 1990s. Research is making a difference.

Early detection saves lives. If breast cancer is found at an early stage there is usually a better chance of successful treatment. Finding cancer early may allow for more treatment options such as less aggressive treatment or breast conserving surgery. Breast cancer is often thought of as a concern for older women. However, young women get breast cancer. Breast awareness is important at any age. How to perform a self exam. Take the time to make sure you are doing it correctly.

[info]marguerite_26's mother and sister are both breast cancer survivors. In the twenty years that separated her mother’s cancer and her sister’s, incredible strides had been made in breast cancer research. As a result, the type of surgery and treatment they received, and their resulting recoveries were vastly different experiences.

Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer. But we are on the right path: be aware, support research. Help create a future without breast cancer.

One way to help without reaching into your pocket, Click to Give helps fund free mammograms for women in need — low-income, inner-city and minority women whose awareness of breast cancer and opportunity for help is often limited. Click the link, click the big pink button and help. It only costs a few seconds of your time and you can do it every day.

Here are a few more links on ways to protect yourself and to support research:

Awareness Post: Autism

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hi, I'm [info]rickey_a and I'm writing for Autism Awareness. I have two beautiful children. My oldest was diagnosed as Autistic when he was two years old. I feared the diagnosis, but I knew deep down that it was coming. Autism is a complex developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause for autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today.

This is the ninth in a series of 'awareness' posts being made by authors and artists participating in the HP 10K Showcase for Awareness. I'm [info]alisanne, and I'm writing to raise awareness of the National Bone Marrow Registry.

Yearly, more than 30,000 patients (including children) are diagnosed with diseases treatable by a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant. When patients learn they need a transplant, they typically turn first to their families to find a donor. Unfortunately, 70% of these people won’t find a suitable match amongst their relatives. Thus, they have to depend on unrelated bone marrow or cord blood donors, and many will die while waiting for a suitably matched donor to be located.

The list of diseases that can be successfully treated with stem cell transplant include several types of leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia and other cancers and genetic diseases.

Prospective donors spend only a few minutes registering to make a difference. They read through some information, are asked to answer some health questions, and have some cells collected (typically from the inner cheek) using a mouth swab. A blood test is not needed to register.

The more people who register, the better the chance that someone with a life-threatening disease will find a match that could prove to be the difference between life and death.

November is National Bone marrow awareness month in the United States.

The only personal connection I have with this issue is that, as part of my job, I have seen people die for want of a bone marrow match. I do have a dear friend who is currently struggling with Aplastic Anemia, and I hope that her life may yet be prolonged, perhaps even by your very personal donation.

Introductory Post

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hello! Welcome to the HP 10K Showcase.

We are a group of friends doing our version of a no-stress, no-pressure fandom challenge. Our standard? The short story. Our goal? Form a small, manageable group of authors (and artists!) who are interested in helping each other grow, learn, and create.

Concurrently, we're hoping to raise awareness for causes that are close to our hearts. Our appeals are brief, but heartfelt. After all, the first step toward change is awareness. Thanks in advance for your indulgence..

There are countless definitions of a short story. Author Penni Griffin explains it as, "A character whose conflict is resolved in under 10,000 words," and goes on to say, "There are so many right ways to write a short story that only technical definitions are really useful." The short story has been compared to many things: a photograph, a horse race, even the illumination of a match. But one analogy we adore is author Andrea Davis Pinkney's: "A short story is like a good meal – it gives you flavor and just enough to chew on, but leaves you completely satisfied."

This is what we will endeavor to give you.

Posting will begin around the Ides of March and run through early April. Be on the lookout for Harry Potter fiction and art of all pairings, genres, and ratings. We'll be bringing it all, and we'll be bringing it in installments of 10,000 words or less.

Participating writers and artists are listed below. We may also have a few surprises.
