Who: Merope & Regulus
When: August 29, 3000 7am, Merope couldn't sleep.
Where: Hogwarts.
Why: I don't know.

Merope was having trouble dealing with her limp, she could hardly move her leg. Since she was transported back to the castle, Merope was stir-crazy. The girl needed to get up and move, so she strolled with a limp by the wall, her hand supporting the majority of her weight until she was at a place where she could sit down and rest after ten minutes of walking. Merope couldn't handle all the stress of the gruesome walk from her bed to a place she stopped at.

Little did she know that someone would have to pass by her, seeing her marked up to hell but not bleeding or anything. She needed more rest and shouldn't have been out of bed, but she was so lonely that being in bed only mad it worse.

Regulus always went to bed extraordinarily late and woke extraordinarily early, living on only a few hours of sleep every night. Some nights he didn't sleep at all and it was a vibrant reminder from his previous life where he had used alcohol to treat his constant insomnia. Came back to life and still had insomnia. What a joke.

Currently he was on his way to the kitchens to eat some breakfast while the castle was still very quiet. Turning down a corridor he spotted Merope Gaunt resting, much more bruised than he remembered her.

Regulus came to stand next to her, "Something happened, I take it?"

She was certain that nobody cared, nobody wanted to care and Regulus didn't give a damn; they were all going to leave her at some point. Merope leaned against the stone, raising her head to see Regulus,"..........." she tried explaining but nothing came out. She settled for a gentle nod, then leaned her head back with a gentle sigh. Merope started to feel like she was the only one in Hogwarts that had absolutely no importance.

Getting too defeated, she lowered her head away from him, trying to hide what she could from him.

Regulus sighed, knowing their conversation wouldn't get far like this and noting the aura of depression that clung to Merope. He was not known for his skill in legilimency, so he couldn't very well just take a look to see what had happened (although he could try if he wanted), and he doubted Merope would enjoy the intrusion into her mind. He wondered if she had her journal on her, but was unwilling to ask or wait to find out.

"Wait here," He said gruffly, turning on heel to return to his room. Once there he quickly grabbed some parchment and a pen (which he thought to be more convenient than a quill), stuffing both in his trouser pockets. Quickly he returned and held out his hand out to her to help her up, "Let's go to the kitchens. I'm starving, and it will be more comfortable to talk there than here."

The girl was still, noticing the frustration in his breathing before he left her. Merope frowned when she saw him turn away with a huff, but she couldn't help but be pleased when he returned with a hand opened to her. A part of her wished that she could ask him to carry her, but she couldn't talk so that'd be impossible. So, she reached her hand out and gripped his putting all the weight on her good leg and leaned against him.

Merope's quiet walk to the kitchens was as slow as possible, the injuries she sustained seemed to be the reason she was taking so long. Whenever the two got to the kitchens, she found a close seat and set down on top of the barstool, leaving her one leg hanging off more than the other.

She was just glad to be with him.

Regulus noticed that she avoided putting too much weight on her leg but did not comment on it, allowing her to lean on him as needed. Sitting near her, he watched for a moment as elves began to scurry about to prepare breakfast items for them without his saying a word.

He turned to Merope instead, taking the now crumpled parchment and the pen from his pocket and handing them to her.

"We can communicate without it seeming so one-way, now," He said by way of explanation, "It's what I went to get."

Merope played with the pen for a moment, trying to remember how they worked before she easily started writing on a the piece of parchment.

I tried to...end my life.</s>

She looked away from Regulus, he'd think she was foolish or stupid and maybe would laugh at her. She was hurting, hurting really bad.

As she wrote, Regulus absentmindedly took an eclair from a passing platter. He couldn't honesty consider the pastries as breakfast food, but he also couldn't resist the indulgence. He bit into his with gusto, but nearly choked when he read what she wrote. He was surprised but not shocked - she had never seemed particularly happy.

"Why?" He asked stupidly, wondering if something had pushed her to it.

She winced, afraid of his reaction, but when he didn't make a rude reaction...she just stared. Merope wanted to move forward but her leg prevented her, a part of her was wondering if she should be honest. Instead of writing it down, she would question if he really wanted to know...or cared.

Do you really care? Do you really want to know? Honest?

Merope looked down at the pastries, she was happy to see them. They looked so good that she could barely wait, she started taking small bites and made a sigh. There was something about sweets and girls that always made them sigh.

"I'm honestly curious," Regulus replies with a tilt of his head and a shrug of his shoulders, popping the rest of the eclair into his mouth and savoring the flavours. Really, how long had it been since he last had one?

He turned to a house elf once he licked any residual cream from his lips and fingers (who needs napkins?) and ordered himself a proper breakfast and cup of tea. In the same breath he ordered the elf to find things Merope might enjoy.

Nobody will ever love me.

She wrote down then pushed it in his direction, she turned away unsure of what his reaction would be like. Merope felt utterly lonely and Regulus only made her feel like she was more alone sometimes.

That's when she noticed the house elf bringing her a large piece of chocolate. Merope took off a piece and bit it, sighing easily again.

"Perhaps you're just not seeing all the love available," Regulus started spooning some sugar into his tea once he had read the page, "I assume you're speaking of romantic love, but that's not all that is out there. Every time a person asks you how you've been and means it, or shows concern for you, or shows you any kindness at all...those are all like little doses of love. Perhaps that love isn't always exclusively for you, but it's there and they're offering to share."

He sipped his tea and took a moment to close his eyes, contented, before he opened them and spoke again, "There is friendship, for example, which can be very fulfilling."

Most of them lie to get things they want.

Merope felt her heart flutter, like he was giving her a signal that she was accepted by him. The girl easily slinked off her chair, limped a little in his direction, used her hand and pressed her mouth against his as soft as she possibly could. Regulus could feel her hand stroking the side of his face down to his collarbone and holding on for support. She came to the realization that her stomach rolling was due to the fact that her stomach was full of nerves and stressing out as she pulled away.

She turned her eyes to his, trying to find some sort of reaction of negativity on his face.

Regulus' eyes widened in slight surprise at her kiss. While he didn't push her away, neither did he respond to it. He was the sort who broke hearts. He was a person who had eventually sent away everyone he had become intimate with. He knew he was capable of hurting Merope as well, and knew better than to react to any kiss. He waited for her to pull away.

"You'll want to sit down or you'll hurt your leg," After taking a sip of tea to buy himself a few extra seconds he continued, "I've always been better at friendship, myself. Every romantic relationship I've been in has ended in tears. Their tears, not mine. Some people just aren't any good at love. Perhaps the both of us aren't any good at it."

She felt nothing from his mouth, nothing from him and not even a change of tone; he did nothing. He could see her eyes go glossy with sadness, her face turned away from his because she didn't want him to see, to know. Instead of trying to write anything, she crossed her arms on the counter and focused her attention elsewhere. She could feel her heart pounding hard with distress, she didn't know what to write or say.

She just nodded.

She was wishing that she never lived to see one more day of rejection.

He saw he reaction and frowned, knowing he had hurt her. His mind worked furiously as he went over ways he could soothe her, ways he could explain that it was in her best interest. He contemplated telling her about some of the terrible things he had done to women in the past, knowing that such stories would surely make her hate him. Send her running from his presence.

He got up from the stool and walked over to where she sat, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Merope," He said quietly, "You're my friend, a very dear friend. I don't want that to be ruined by anything. Please understand."

Merope's eyes watched Regulus come closer, he could see her miserable face now; she's been trying not to cry. She looked at his hand, frowning as she rubbed her cheek against his hand. Merope knew that she wasn't his type she was pathetic and not worth being cared for.

She covered her eyes, moved her face away and her free hand moved against his chest in an effort to push him off of her, but she didn't have the heart.

Regulus dropped his hand and took a half-step back to give her room, not wanting to upset her. He felt compelled to explain further, feeling guilty for upsetting her so much.

"It really isn't you," He attempted weakly, "I'm very...fickle."

I'm not good enough.

Merope said nothing, she moved her hand out and placed her palm against his and pulled him closer. The girl couldn't have been anymore sadder than she was now, her head was even starting to pound. Using her hands, she took both of his and placed them on her cold face, her fingers briefly interlacing with his.
