The Dark Lord's Rising
Who: Gellert Grindelwald and Tom Marvolo Riddle
What: Second meetings, Gellert needs to know where he and Riddle stand
Where: A secluded meeting place of Gellert's choosing
When: Backdated to August 21st, 3000
Warnings/Status: TBD Started/Incomplete

This meeting was a long time in coming and Gellert would be a fool to think that he was not nervous for it. Tonight would decide his course of action and whether or not the two of them could stand together and fight for the same cause instead of fighting each other. Gellert wasn't willing to hand over his revolution to a man who didn't think about it first, Riddle had powers yes, he was strong and brilliant but he was also foolish and hard headed and made irrational decisions on a whim. Or at least that was how he'd come across to Gellert and more than a few others. But he also wouldn't take orders or believe that this cause was not his or something that he ruled entirely... But Barty had said something about two souls that Bellatrix had neglected to mention and that was curious. Two souls in one man? Could one be reasoned with and the other snuffed out?

Gellert paced back and forth irritably and repeatedly stuffed his hands into his pockets, for the first time since his return ruing the fact that he had no wand on him, as Voldemort had not hesitated to kill him before.. Would he be so kind again? Gellert frowned at his apparent defenselessness and idly mulled over his knowledge and skill at wandless magic. He knew enough to give him a run for his money for a good ten minutes maybe. That would only stall the inevitable. But.. whatever comes would come and so Gellert would face it and survive it or face it and die with it. He brushed the concern aside and glanced around the barren little house. It had been rather hard to find a place for them to meet in private, this was a conversation that he did not want anyone to overhear, and so he had to find a secluded location.. it took more time than he would have liked but here it was and now that he sat around waiting he didn't really like it.

So Gellert left the little house and stepped onto the graveled road leading up to it. Maybe Riddle would think it was a trap... so perhaps it was best to wait outside? With another frown on his normally cheerful handsome face Grindelwald settled onto the porch steps and waited.

Tom got the owl and he wasn't sure how he felt about it. Sure, partnering with Gellert could bring great power, at the same time, Barty and Bellatrix were there, and he had basically no love lost for either of them. They betrayed him and he simply didn't know if he could work with them. This was not the time to attack magical people, so he left his wand on the table beside his bed. He knew, that he would be unarmed, but he wanted to show that he had some sort of faith in the man. He had respected him ever since he was a child, and right now, it was time for them to speak as adults. Tom threw his cloak on and re-read the owl. He memorized the address and apparated quickly.

It was a cold night, or maybe Tom was just too thin, either way he pulled the cloak tighter around him. He walked slowly, keeping a keen eye for any noises that appeared to be out of the odinary, while keeping his eyes peeled for Gellert. He hated being so vulnerable, he hated that he was able to think clearly right then because Lord Voldemort may have had a better handle on these things. Either way, he was there and now was the time to find Gellert.

He noticed a secluded porch and walked slowly towards the steps. Making sure to keep enough distance between them so if a fight broke out, he would be able to get away as quickly as he needed to. "Ah, Hello Gellert. I must apologize but I am unarmed. I couldn't apparate to your exact location so I simply apparate to the address. You are looking well," Tom said, a sneer spreading across his lips.

He saw him coming so there was no room to be startled about anything in particular and indeed once Riddle had gotten close enough to him Gellert had managed to plaster that friendly, although somewhat mocking, smile on his face. He pushed himself to his feet and extended his hand in that muggle fashion of welcome. Brilliant eyes scanned Riddle's lanky frame and he canted his head to the side a fraction, the smile broadening briefly before fading for that neutral expression that would best suit him now. "Welcome, my friend," he said easily and raised both of his brows as the only indication of his surprise at the man being unarmed. "Ah well, then we are both without a magical conduit and doomed to wandless combat if it comes down to it," he said jovially and laughed softly.

"I'll account my looking good as having just been born again. But come, come, no point in lingering on the door step," he said and gestured towards the house. He kept his hands out of his pockets to avoid any sort of misunderstanding of what they would be doing in there and as an act of good will, and probably in a moment of absolute and utter over-caution, stepped across the threshold first. He pivoted on his heel and held the door open for Riddle, bowing him in slightly and idly closing it behind him. "Shall we indulge in the niceties a moment longer or get down to business as is our intent?" he questioned airily and sauntered easily across the room, settling himself on to a rather fluffy chair. The house wasn't in bad condition and truth be told it wasn't even abandoned, Gellert had just watched the family that lived here leave and he only hoped they'd stay gone for the duration of his and Riddle's discussion.

Gellert remained silent for a moment and merely observed the man before him, his bright eyes lingering over that darkly handsome face then idly roaming over his frame again. "I'm not against the idea of working with you," he said for starters and leaned forward in a less rigid and formal fashion, indeed he pressed his elbows into his thighs and propped his chin up on his hand. "In fact I relish the idea."

Tom simply smiled back. He didn't want to make any false moves or pretend that he was feeling welcomed. Infact, what he was feeling was strangely. Wandless combat was certainly not something he'd ever do. He didn't need a wand, and that was always apparent, but he never did anything without one either. "I do not believe that any combat will be needed tonight. No, this is more of a friendly visit, I'm afraid," Tom took Gellert's hand in his own, and did the same. While he didn't trust many muggle traditions, this one could be considered more friendly than most, and didn't annoy him as much.

Tom fiddled around with his cloak a bit, still feeling rather cold, but listened intently. It wasn't Gellert that he didn't trust, he trusted the man a bit more than he would put into words. It was more of the fact that he had people on his side who Tom simply wasn't sure he could be around. "I am not against working with you, either. Honestly, it would be a sort of honour because you have quite a legend. I've read articles that have involved you," Tom's cloak was finally in place, and he put his hands into them to keep them from the cold. He was far too skinny and he knew that.

"I am more against those who you have on your side. Barty wouldn't be a problem and that much I know, but I know that I can not trust Bellatrix. She would want me dead before anyone else, and I would have to say that if we were working closely together, that I do not believe she would feel the same as I do now. There are things you do not know, at least not things that can be explained by someone else. Bellatrix seems to completely dismiss those and assume things about me," Tom didn't know what more to say on the subject. There wasn't much to say, really. He had two sides of himself which conflicted more often than not and that simply wasn't doing any good. He was clearheaded most of the time, that was for sure, but anything could happen, and Tom didn't need to think of looking over his shoulder constantly.

He listened to Riddle's reasoning with a whole world of patience, his face maintaining that pleasantly neutral expression, his only indication that he was actually listening at all the subtle nods of his head as a form of showing his understanding. Then he looked down at his feet briefly once Tom had finished and canted his head to the side as if weighing his options. Finally, Grindelwald peered back up and smiled faintly, "I understand your concerns over Bellatrix, truly, I do. I'm not entirely sure that I trust her myself, I've spoken to her you see and she wasn't quite what I was looking for. I've no concern if she wants me dead personally, she's welcome to try if she thinks she can overcome me. It's her loyalty issue that I dislike, she seems far too willing to betray people because it suits her to do so or because she feels the need to play these games and frankly, I don't want that on my team," he finished and sat back, exhaling a soft sigh.

She hadn't mentioned the two souls bit that Barty had, he could forgive her that because he hadn't told her about the Deathly Hallows, but then she also hadn't asked over them or what the sign meant... So really, they weren't even at all. Gellert pondered this briefly and cast his eyes back around to Riddle's handsome face. "So we have a common dislike for the woman, which is unfortunate as she's been rumored to have been remarkable..." Gellert furrowed his brows, "and what if we did not include her in our plans? What if we didn't invite her to be a part of what we're creating? Do you believe that she would rally Barty and the others to abandon the cause as well? Are they mindless enough to follow the woman? I regret not knowing enough of them to tell, but you... you they followed faithfully for years."

Grindelwald paused again and shook his head, "Without death being the only option, how can we subdue her?" He didn't really want to have her under the imperius curse all the time, but if she was the only obstacle between Riddle and him working together, well then she'd have to go and do so without dying because that would be counter productive to his purposes. So the imperius curse or if Nuremgard was still intact an unpleasant stay behind its prison walls. Or frankly just ignoring her, but something told Gellert that that just wouldn't work.

Tom nodded a bit, he knew that it had to be a concern of anyone who wishes to align themselves with Bellatrix to know her history. And her history with Tom as of late was strange, sometimes she was enticed by him and other times disgusted. It was certainly strange. "Bellatrix seems to believe that this life is supposed to be completely different than it is. She thinks that I am against all of you who want the same thing as I do, but that's far from the truth. I have ordered my followers to get along with any magical person because I believe that we will need all of those who believe that the muggles are a problem. She likely doesn't want you dead, but her problem with trust may get in your way."

Dislike wasn't exactly the right word. In all honesty, Tom had no feelings toward her whatsoever. At one time, he adored the fact that she was by his side. But now, there was nothing. "Oh remarkable is a very well expressed word for her. She's a powerful witch without many to match her. I'm not certain if Barty would rally with her or not, but Julian I'm inclined to believe that he would trust her before either of us. They have a sort of connection which I can not explain. I have no problem with Julian personally, he is a good man in the end, but Bellatrix has a way about her. She's the sort of woman who gets what she wants at any cost."

Dead, no, she shouldn't die. At least not now. She could be useful, but she would certainly have some things to get passed if she were to work alongside Tom and Gellert, that part was certainly for sure. Tom considered for a moment, "I'm not certain how we possibly could. Bellatrix tends to do things on her own terms. It would be difficult to get her under any sort of spell, regardless of how powerful we are. I think that she may just need to understand that until we are finished with this impending war, she will not lay a finger or wand upon me. If that is something she can understand, I will be able to not really pay her much mind."

Ah, so truly they did have a lot of goals in common or at least a means in order to accomplish those goals. Gellert peered up at Riddle with interest and nodded his head in agreement, "I requested from my limited number of supporters the same thing, for now we must indeed look at the threat of muggles..." he said and sighed softly, pushing himself to his feet to pace around while his thoughts started flowing. He could never sit still when he was thinking, the pacing motion influenced the thought process. He frowned and tapped at the side of his head briefly then looked back at Tom.

"Bellatrix is disconcerting," he said conversationally, "but if she must be ignored.. then by all means I'll ignore her, if she rallies the others away I--we--can find more. We can't afford a woman as stubborn and unwilling to commit as Bellatrix because the chance of her messing things up because she can't wait or even think things through would be disastrous. She neglected to mention her affinity with you, I was told she was closest to you and so would know information that would not be gleaned from anyone else... what she told me is what I largely knew from our past life. Is this a matter of little consequence or is it fueling some personal bitter resentment from her towards you?" he questioned with all caution and sheer honesty. "Are you her soul reason for wanting to join my cause you think? Does she believe it would upset you?" Gellert wasn't familiar with the ways of women, especially not the type like Bellatrix. The only women he'd ever really known were his mother and great aunt Bathilda..

Gellert furrowed his brows, "Well, she's not the cause... she's not the reason for this meeting, what we need to figure out is if we can work together or not, my friend, we have a common goal, we have a common means and both the power and the will to accomplish it. What, if anything, would deter you from this path of a united revolution? Can you imagine it? The magical world put back in order by the greatest wizards ever known.. the most powerful and brilliant minds of our millennium."

Tom pursed his lips. It was strange to have someone else do as he had done no more than 1 week ago. "I felt that the muggles being as strong as they are, that they are my only cause for concern as of yet. They are trying to hurt us, so there is no point to fight amongst ourselves until it is all over." This wasn't as he expected it to be. He was glad he had come wandless, if for no other reason, to show that he did somehow trust Gellert.

"I can't say that ignoring her would be best. If she wants someone's attention, she will go to any lengths to get it," Tom shivered at the thought, "Her and I were close at one point, but she simply was infatuated with me. I was the only powerful being at that time, so she rallied towards me for it. I admit I did some things to her I shouldn't have, but that was my former life. She doesn't realize that things are different. And perhaps she turned to you because she once again seen power. I do not believe she would shun me for any other reason."

Yes, that was what Tom wanted. But he didn't want mud-bloods involved, but at the moment he simply couldn't begin thinking of that, "Yes, I believe I can. Without the fear that has become a constant recently, I believe that our world can be as we wish it. But I do believe that many, even magical, will oppose us, as well. It will be much like your former life, as well as mine."

Gellert nodded again but ultimately cast aside the issue with Bellatrix for later consideration. They'd figure that out in due course, right now it wasn't that much of a problem. He tapped at his chin briefly and nodded his head again, "Yes, we will face opposition both muggle and magical... but these people, Tom," he said tentatively, moving from formalities to a more casual tone while speaking, "are so beaten down and broken and unaware.. they're so controlled and mindless.. so hopeless.. we need only give them a reason, show them the world as we see it, a place where our magical kindred can grow and play and laugh and live and use their magic without fear. We need only show them that a life beyond the mundane tasks they live right now is a goal worth fighting for... we give them a cause and we give them hope for its success.. we can get these people to fight for their lives, Tom. We can rally them and make them see that uniting... that united we are strong and we can take back what is ours."

Gellert exhaled a soft breath, looking flushed and glowing for his passion and determination to see this goal accomplished. He stepped closer to Riddle, his brilliant eyes peering into that handsome face, scanning his eyes in search of some sign, some indication that Riddle was feeling what he was.. "I believe we can change the world, Tom, we can do it together.. we can lead our magical brothers and sisters to a better life and even if we can't enjoy it.. if we die for it.. then at least they can carry the dream on and live in a better world of their choosing," he said and stood straighter, proudly really, his eyes glowing and his face bright for the utter joy that was welling deep in his veins.

"It will be hard, yes, it will take time, months.. years.. maybe, but it can be done. With planning, with subtlety, with courage... " he said and smiled excitedly, spinning away from Tom to look around the little home and stop the rampant swirling of thoughts that coursed through his brain. It was so much to deal with, chaotic and energetic and witless and brilliant all in one scope. "I have wanted this revolution for so long, Tom, I tried very hard to make it a reality all those years ago and Dumbledore stopped me... but I have him under my finger again and I believe that with you at my side, with me at your's.. together, the both of us can make the world right again. We can take our proper place as a group and live freely at last." Slowly, he turned around to face him again.

Tom knew that things weren't simple right now. There was nothing about this time that could be handled without some sort of stronghold in the wizarding world. He needed to do things for them, and then deal with his problems with the others. Gellert, though, seemed to be on the same page. And as much as Tom wanted to believe in him, some part of him felt as though there was more to it, "I hate to sound disapproving, but I feel a strange feeling that there is much you aren't speaking of. You do not have to tell me everything, but I would like to know what is going to drive you. You are passionate, and I share that passion, but if there is something else you want to know or are thinking of, please speak openly to me. I will do the same for you, as well," Tom said, glancing at Gellert. Watching for any sort of reaction. He knew better than to just trust people, but right now he felt as though he already was trusting Gellert, which could lead to many things that could possibly destroy them both.

It was quite possible for the two of them to change the world. That was always obvious. His own plan was going to set into motion very quickly, with or without any help from anyone else. He was going to Hogwarts sometime soon to attempt to get into the library to research everything that was going on. "What sort of plans do you have to begin? I can share my own which will be set into motion very soon." Tom didn't feel any desire to hide anything. He was being more open now because he knew that if everything was to begin, he had to be.

"Dumbledore was a problem and an enemy of mine. If you are to work with me, that bit of power you hold over him could wave and we could have a problem on our hands. There is, however, more than likely a chance that if he were to oppose us, we may have to kill him. Could you do that?" Tom watched Gellert more intently. If it came down to it, yes, Tom could kill him, "I am sorry but it's just the way things are. We can't trust everyone as we once were able. I am not the man I was, but much of the past is still with me."

Gellert sighed heavily and looked at Riddle. Not telling him the truth? As far as he knew he was telling him the absolute truth on his life.. there was nothing else to sa-ah, yes, of course. The Deathly Hallows. Grindelwald furrowed his brows and thought that over for a minute. Could he risk telling this man of the Eldar wand? Could he perhaps let him know he was searching but also make him believe the power of it had died with Harry? But why would he be looking for it otherwise? Gellert worried his bottom lip then shrugged it off, he would face the consequences of telling him but certainly the movement was worth more than a bleeding wand. "I have no ulterior motives for this cause, I want this revolution for the sheer fact that I believe in a better world, I don't do it because I want to own people or rule people, I'm doing it because I believe our brethren deserve a chance to live the life they've always been meant to have," he said earnestly and shrugged again. "As for what else I'm not telling you.. what do you know about the Deathly Hallows?" he asked airily and stepped closer to Tom, his eyes scanning the young man's face in search of his reaction in turn.

He looked away though and shrugged yet again at his first acts of this movement. "I've mostly focused on recruiting because I believe in order to be taken seriously we must have a following.. but I've handed out tasks to my small group of supporters, Julian I sent to Russia, he's gaining intelligence and I fully intend for him to be my political spokesperson, he has more air for public speaking than I do.. I intend for him to spread a message of hope and of our group, the cause.. Barty I've handed the task of gathering information, I thought it was a good idea to glean insight on what muggles have done to advance themselves, figure out our opposition and after he finished with that I needed an ear in the underground, someone to speak in low places to spread the word further. When that was said and done I intended to infiltrate the muggle government, we need eyes and ears on the inside and from there I wanted to stage attacks on our own kind.. yes, sadly, but figure a way to frame the muggles. I thought we would need to inspire these timid peoples to act and fight for their lives," that was only a few random ideas and of course none of it was the official guide, it was his initial plan but those ideas were always changing with him, nothing was ever set in stone, in fact he actually preferred to improvise but this situation called for some critical thinking.

But then it came around to Dumbledore and Gellert swallowed back the lump in his throat at that suggestion. If Albus became a problem could he kill him? Grindelwald stared into Riddle's eyes for a long moment while he thought of that. He hadn't explicitly loved Albus, not like the man loved him but there was still an old fondness there.. "Yes," he said easily, keeping eye contact so he would believe him. "I can kill him." Hopefully it wouldn't come down to that though.
