A Fun-Filled Quidditch Match
[To take place shortly after this journal entry and this note posted by Draco in his journal, made viewable to everybody]

Draco arrived at the pitch around 7:20 or so that evening, knowing that he'd want to be there early before anyone else showed up. A school practice broom was in his hands, something that Draco never truly thought he'd have to use again. His fingers tightened on the hard, almost torn wood, wishing that he could have his own Firebolt back. It had been so smooth, so perfect, to fly on the Firebolt. Sighing tiredly, Draco leaned against one of the bleacher stands of the pitch and gazed upward at the setting sun as he waited for others to arrive. He could only hope that even at least Harry would show, but some how, Draco expected the Gryffindor to actually make an appearance that evening. Quidditch was at least one thing that could bring them together, and perhaps it could be Quidditch that could help others trust him more.

Harry made his way to the pitch and spotted no one but Draco there so far. Perhaps he had been wrong about the others, perhaps no one would show up. Perhaps they couldn't get it out of their heads that this was Draco Malfoy, this was the boy who had led to deaths and losses. Harry couldn't understand it himself but he was beginning to trust him. Perhaps it was his persistance. Perhaps it was Harry's fear that he would never be able to win this war that they were about to face. He didn't know.

He held the school broomstick in his hand, the worn wood biting into his hand. "Malfoy," he greeted, still finding himself unable to mutter his first name.

"Potter," Draco returned as he rotated on his heels upon hearing his name being spoken. A smile met his lips as he saw that at least one other person had arrived, if no one else bothered to show. He didn't push himself off the bleacher he was leaning against yet. "Glad you're at least here. Wasn't sure if even you'd bother." Draco shrugged slowly, shifting the old broom from one hand to the other. His voice was non-chalant, as if he were just stating a fact.

Parvati watched the two boys from the edge of the pitch. She'd never really cared for quidditch but she'd found the invitation to be somewhat intriguing. She had expected more of a turn out though, weren't half the future students quidditch players? Surely they'd be interested.

After ascertaining that a fist fight wasn't in any danger of breaking out on the pitch, she shrugged and started towards the boys, awkwardly carrying a school broom.

"Uhm, hello. I'm not really much for quidditch, but I thought maybe I could, you know, watch or something?"

"Of course," Harry told her. "It just seemed like a good time to get out of the castle."

"Yeah, that's mostly why I came. Sometimes it's just so," she paused searching for a weird, "so WEIRD in there. I just feel like I have to get away for a little bit."

Draco turned his head in surprise when he caught sight of Padma Patil walking toward them. He couldn't help but smile with relief; at least one other person seemed not to loathe him as the rest of them did. Well, besides Harry, but Draco was already winning the Gryffindor over. He knew that much.

"Enchante, Miss Patil," Draco greeted fondly enough, flashing her a charming smile. "Good to see that you joining us this afternoon. While you're not really one for Quidditch, perhaps we could offer you the position of referee?"

Padma resisted the urge to roll her eyes and trade to paste on a pleasant smile. "Good afternoon Malfoy. I'd be more than happy to referee if you think you can count on me to be impartial."

"More so than I," Draco returned casually enough, a broad smile forming on his lips as he spoke. "Though, I'll be honest and say that I've not the foggiest as to how many people will actually bother showing."

Neville walked out onto the Quidditch pitch and sighed softly. What was he doing here? He hated Malfoy. Well, at least this way he could be there to protect Harry or the others if Malfoy and his cronies attacked.

Nodding to everyone, he spoke softly. "Thought I'd watch, if that's okay." He sure wasn't going to play. He wasn't that great of a flyer and the last thing he needed to do was fall in front of everyone.

Draco's head turned almost abruptly as he heard Neville's voice. Gray eyes studied the Gryffindor coolly for a moment, but then he smiled in welcome. "Yeah, you're welcome to watch, really," Draco returned softly. He exchanged a glance with Harry curiously. "At this rate, it looks like it will turn out just to be a Seeker's match."

Neville had seen the cool look in the blonde's eyes. Didn't really matter. He knew that he couldn't trust him - so it only made sense that Malfoy didn't trust him. He'd promised not to hex him - that was all he was promising right now.

"It'll be like second year. That was a good match - before Harry's arm and all that." He was being nice. At least he was trying.

At that memory, Draco just grinned broadly. "That match wasn't really a true match, I suppose. I was too caught up in winning, especially since my father was there. I needed to impress the man, and lost that match because of my determination for it." Shrugging, Draco fingered his broom skeptically. "Now we'll see who's really the better of the two of us at Seeker, with these brooms and all. Even match." The blond grinned proudly, then sighed as he realized he was babbling on about stuff that probably wasn't all that important to Neville.

"Er...sorry. Didn't mean to ramble on like that. Tend to do that when I get a mite excited." Draco laughed softly, doubting that Neville would take that as sincere.

"I heard that Kingsley!" Sirius called out, glancing over at the older student. "Standing right here, mate. He thinks he's really witty sometimes, don't let it fool you." He added aside to Hannah.

In spite of herself, Parvati began to relax, at least a little bit, enjoying the banter around her. "Your pick Kingsley, and what Ma.. Draco there is trying to tell you is that if you don't pick Harry, he'll whine. And trust me, you don't want to hear that."

"Hey!" Draco glared at the other girl, crossing his arms in defense. "I happen to be a damn good Seeker and thrive for the challenge. Hannah can have Harry, for all that I could care." Draco "humphed" rather adorably, looking quite put-out that the other girl seemed to sense his personality so well.

Kingsley flashed the pretty girl a smile. "What you don't realise is that I have Potter and Black on my team. Trust me, there is no way anyone whines more than they do."

Then he shrugged, "I don't know how often you all have had the chance to play and I would rather a fair game then a lopsided one. So are the teams even as they are now? or should we do a handicap?"

If there was anything Kingsley hated it was an uneven pick up game whether it was Quidditch or basketball when he was younger and into Muggle sports. Matches were a different mater entirely, but this wasn't a match.

"I thought Neville was going to play," Hannah replied, scratching the back of her neck. She'd have gladly picked Neville for her team, seeing as how he was the only other one here who she was anywhere near friends with.

Funny, she thought, that it would be Neville and Draco out of everyone here. Idly, she gave her broom a twirl, testing the balance on it. It could be better, but then again, it was a school broom. They could probably all be better.

"It's his choice, but I say let Harry play on Hannah's team. I'm up for the challenge," Draco returned casually enough, addressing Hannah's statements first. Then rotating toward Kingsley, Draco flashed a wicked grin. "Oh, I've heard how much those two whinge. Trust me. I think I win that category." Draco chuckled in amusement. Oh, how I wish I could inform the lot of them right now that I was related to the Blacks. Last living heir, technically, even if my last name is Malfoy. Well, besides Potter, I guess. But that doesn't count.

"Put it this way, mate. Slyth...Where we come from, we had similar house dividings like here. The house I was in was known for not letting everyone know their personalities outside of their close group of friends. I was the only one in my house from this group, and even they know I like to whinge a lot." Draco grinned wickedly, counting that as a good enough compromise.

He began to tap his foot waiting for everyone to agree.

It was the second time Hannah had done that and Kingsley wondered if it was a nervous habit.

"Okay Draco and me versus you three."

He hoped Draco was a good Chaser.

He turned to the two who seemed to be referees. "Release the Quaffle will you?" With that he was up in the air.

"What position do you play, Hannah is it?" Sirius asked as he hopped onto his broom, hovering a few feet above the ground to wait for her answer - and what position he'd be taking up.

Parvati bent down to the quidditch case and struggled a bit with the unfamiliar bindings. She looked up at Neville and whispered "Do you know how to open these? I've never done it before, and I wouldn't want to let the bludgers out by accident."
