Kingsley does school work in the Library
Kingsley dropped his bag with a thud by his favortite table in the library. It was just at the beginning of the stacks of books but also in the open so people could join him. Thanks to the Quidditch match he had a lot to do. not that he was complaining about the win, because he wasn't. He had decided to come to the library because there was more space to spread out and he realised he would need some extra book that he didn't have.

Setting out books and pulling out some ink and a quill he began to skim his notes and pile of library books for his Charms essay due the next day.

Elizabeth walked into the Library to find it astoundingly crowded. Instead of searching for an empty table she decided to join a boy with some empty space on his table.

She walked over to him nervously and in a barely audible whisper asked,"Is it alright if I sit here?"

Kingsly looked up at the girl and smiled, moving a pile of books from the table to the chair next to him. "Sure," his voice was deep and soothing. "Elizabeth right?" He paused thinking, "We have most classes together don't we?"

He nodded to the papers spread around him. "I'm trying to get a handle on the essay for Flitwick."

Elizabeth smiled. His voice had a calming effect on her. It was quite nice, really. "Yes, I think so," she responded, still smiling. She took the free seat and got out her own essay.

"I am as well," she told him, sighing dejectedly. "I'm horrible at Charms. It's really unfortunate."

Kingsley nodded in understanding and flipped open a book. "I tend to need more practise with the wand movement but I tend to do okay with the theory."

It says here, "Conjuring charms work best when the caster can picture the item or substance that is wanted. The more specific the better."

Kingsley fiddled with the quill if the assignment was to compare the conjuring spells in the chapter of reading, Aguamenti, Arrows, Magical Chains, Ferula, Fountain Of Wine, Inanimatus Conjurus, Orchideous, and Serpensortia to name a few, maybe they should start by comparing and contrasting them.

He looked at Elizabeth to see if she had any ideas.

Elizabeth was completely clueless. She had no idea what kind of 'specific item' someone would want. She mainly had no idea. Which was kind of sad, considering she was a Ravenclaw.

"Errr," she said, completely lost. "I'm really bad at Charms."

Kingsley chuckled, "'S okay, you should see me in potions it's a miracle I manged to get an E in it to get into NEWT level."

He pulled out a spare piece of parchment, "lets try this," He frowned at the book and then wrote across the top Magical Chains|Magical Ropes making the two columns all the way down.

"How are ropes and chains different", he asked, writing hard and soft in the appropriate columns as texture was the first thing he thought of.

Elizabeth was...a little confused, to be honest. She thought and said,"Well, chains are usually metal, and ropes are some sort of twine or other fabric." She thought some more.

"And," she said like she couldn't believe she hadn't thought of it before,"chains are much stronger."

"Right," Kingsley said thinking as he jotted that down. He frowned at the paper. "You would use ropes and chains for different things right?"

So maybe it was the intent that mattered behind the spells and that made them easier to cast.

"Could conjuring spells be based largely on intent?"

"I..I suppose," Elizabeth said furrowing her brow. And then she understood. "Oh!" she exclaimed, "You have to think of your intent to get the spell? Is that it?"

He smiled brightly, happy that he understood and she understood. Then he shrugged a little bashfully, "I guess we'll only know when we do the wand work or get the essay back, but it seems to make sense. Why else would there be a separate spell for water and wine?"

He thought briefly of the Bible stories his father used to read him before bed, there had been one if he remembered correctly of turning water into wine. His mother hadn't continued that after he had died and Kingsley understood now what he hadn't then. In the Wizarding world there was no religion just beliefs and good magic and bad although he was beginning to think even those lines were blurred a little.

He shook off the memory, he thought he was over that.

Elizabeth smiled happily as she began to write down ideas for her essay. She looked up at Kingsley to thank him, but was startled at the look on his face.

"Are you alright?" she asked with great concern.

Bugger.

"Uhh....It's nothing just an unpleasant association." He tried to smile reassuringly but he knew he was probably failing. He gestured to another open book "I found this one useful already," he said as he turned back to his notes.

Then he attempted to change the subject. "You know, I love Quidditch, except when I then have to catch up on work because of it"

The win was worth it of course. But he wasn't that immodest, unlike some members of his team.

Elizabeth accepted the change in subject with an "oh." She figured it must be touchy or he would talk about it.

"Quidditch is nice. I've never been very good at flying though" she told him, searching for a book.

He smiled his thanks at allowing the subject to drop. Such a memory was still too personal to share. "Flying is amazing, it just takes some practise. Nothing in the Muggle world compares to it..." except maybe riding a horse, but he doesn't say that last part out loud.

He returned to his books, "So what do you do for extra in school, if you don't mind my asking." He wasn't nosy, he just liked to know things about people.

She smiled again. He was very easy to talk to. She wished everyone could be like him. "I think the broom can sense my fear," she told him half-jokingly. "Like horses, you know."

"Oh," she answered, looking down, "Er...nothing. Mainly I'm in here all the time."

He wasn't laughing because well it made sense. "It is scary at first but eventually you learn to trust yourself."

"You have to have some sort of hobby. You'd go batty if you didn't."

He flipped through another book and began the conclusion to his essay.

"I think I'm already a bit batty," she told him in a sort of off-handed way. She peered over at his paper.

"You're almost done!" she exclaimed.

"Who isn't batty in their own way really."

He shrugged, "Yeah well I have a lot of work to do especially if I want to be able to concentrate at practice and not be distracted by the pile of work I have to do, so I tend to do it fast. Maybe next year I'll drop a class."

He could still hear his mother laughing kindly at him for taking Muggle Studies.

"Oh," she said quietly. Elizabeth knew how bad too much work could get so she shut up and finished her essay.

"Hey," Kingsley said waiting till she looked at him to continue, "I like to talk while I work. It drives my Housemates nuts sometimes. That was just the reason that I write so fast."

He looked over, "See the professors like you because not only are you smart, but they can read your writing."

He was waiting impatiently for the ink to dry so that he could start his next assignment. "What's your favorite subject?" He like talking to her. So he probably would until she told him to shut up. Somehow he doubted this quiet girl would do that.

She looked up and bit her lip and then smiled. "I don't think my housemates know I exist," she said quietly.

She blushed a little, and she wasn't exactly sure why. "Thank you?" she offered.

"Er," she had to think a little while. "Transfiguration," she said finally, "I like changing things. What's yours? Besdies, flying of course." It was her feeble attempt at a joke.

He raised an eyebrow. "Well then they're all blind" He knew it was blatant line and he smiled slightly, but he refused to bush because it was true.

"I like Ancient Runes and Defense. Defense is practical. Ancient Rues is more just for... fun." He wasn't sure if that was the right word for it.

Elizabeth blushed more and coughed a little bit. "Er...right," she said.

"Ancient Runes?" she asked, "I took that in third year. It was interesting, I must say."

She was obviously uncomfortable with compliments, something that was foreign to Kingsley. But he knew for now he wanted to change the subject. "It is that. I find most of the subjects interesting although I probably don't need a lot of them."

He tied up his charms essay and pulled out another assignment for Arithmancy.

"Uhh," he thought for a moment, "ten? Yeah, ten." He smiled in that self conscious way when someone thought they were going to get a good natured scolding.

"You never know what might come in handy."

"Oh...wow," she answered, kind of dumbfounded. "That's..er...a feat. And you play Quidditch too?" She honestly didn't know how some people did it.

He shrugged, "Like I said I probably need to drop some. I'm just not sure what I want to do yet, you know so I want to keep my options open."

After all he knew that was one of the reason that his mother hadn't returned to the wizarding world. Because she was expected to at least make an appearance at the family business and she hadn't wanted to.

"What about you?"

Elizabeth smiled at him. "You'd probably make a great Auror," she told him. "Or a teacher. Though, you seem like the type that would like an adventure more."

"I took almost every class available, in third year, and stuck with them through OWLs. But now I just take Potions, Defense, Transfiguration, Charms, Herbology. Classes like that," she answered. "I'm not sure what I want to do."

"My mother would be happy with teacher-- it's safe and I'd probably prefer it to being an Auror, but I guess that really depends on what the world looks like when we get out."

His mother had left the wizarding world. Why would she want her only son to risk his life keeping it safe?

"We're pretty protected here anyway."

He smiled and continued writing.
