Coming out of the Slytherin Dungeons (Open)
SSDD. That was how it went right? Same shit, different day. Wasn't that what the American Muggle author had written in one of his books? Hannah was sure it was. But why she was walking the halls trying to figure out why this American author had written it, other than her days seemed to be passing by rather monotonously, was beyond her. It was more than likely because she was bored. When she was bored, her mind tended to wander. Think of things she'd read or seen as a child, remember things someone told her last week, recall the look on someone's face after something specific was said. Little things here and there that sometimes people took for granted or just forgot about completely after a few days. Most of the time it got her in trouble, simply because when her mind started to drift, she never really watched where she was going. She just sort of... dozed while awake.

At this particular moment in time, she was waiting for one of the staircases to connect with another, and when it did, she made her way down into the corridor. She was in the dungeons... she could figure that much out at least. It was cold and dark... and Hannah didn't really like being cold and in the dark. A part of her wondered if there were any secret passageways she never found in her time down here. Oh yes, she knew where a couple were, but then again, so did the majority of the students. There were some that the majority didn't know about though, of that she was certain. And those were the ones she wanted to find. And since Remus had told her he couldn't help her, she was on her own. Sure, there was Susan and Neville, but she didn't want to disturb them. And Luna seemed to be all adventurous, but she didn't know Luna that well.

Come to think of it, the only ones she did know well were Susan and Neville. Out of the lot that were sent back, Hannah wondered just what that said about her. Perhaps she should get to know the rest of them as well, since they were stuck here. Draco Malfoy and Theodore Knott. Pansy Parkinson and the Gryffindor Trio. She smiled at the last bit... could still hear Justin calling them that in her mind.

The cold slid up her skin like a snake, which caused the blonde Hufflepuff to shiver. That was mainly what changed her mind about looking here. It was much too chilly and she wanted to not be cold. Rubbing her hands along her arms, she turned and began to make her way back to the main floor.

Theodore Nott swore under his breath. He'd taken the wrong way again.

With a sigh that signaled that he young man wore the weight of the world on his shoulders, Theodore leaned against the wall and - for good measure - swore once again. He'd automatically taken the way down to the dungeons instead of up to where his "new" common room was located.

With re-gained strength he former Slytherin finally pushed himself away from the wall he'd rested against, picked up his much-loathed but unfortunately necessary crutches and went off. And then a flash of blonde caught his eye.

It was the swearing that startled Hannah to attention. The voice was vaguely familiar, but the dungeon walls distorted it slightly due to the faint echo. She wouldn't have pegged it as Theodore's even if there were no echo, though. They didn't really hang out together in school.

Turning, she drew her wand, wary of whoever it was. She was in a new place after all and, despite the fact that she knew about some of the present students, she didn't know them all... and she was in the Slytherin dungeons. Hufflepuffs down here were out of place.

Still, she cleared her throat, brow furrowed as she tried to peer through the hall. "Who's there?"

Theodore stopped in mid-rant. "Who's there?" he asked somewhat childishly and took a few steps forward. Thank Merlin his mother was currently enrolled at Beauxbatons, the young man thought, as curiosity once again got the better of him.

Leaning heavily on the crutch he approached the girl. "Abbott?" Theodore frowned. "Aren't you a bit far from wherever you're supposed to be?"

"Lumos!" Severus said, lighting his wand once he'd made certain the door to his workroom was secured. He had heard voices outside, and since he was done with his brewing for the night anyway, he decided to investigate. The sight that greeted him made him smirk: one Ravenclaw boy and one Hufflepuff girl, both out past curfew. The only question was, would they make it worth his while not to take House points. "I do believe the same could be said of you," he said, smirking, as he made his way up the corridor toward the pair of them.

Theodore turned around and the protest died on his lips. That voice! That face!

The young man's eyes as wide as saucers, Theodore momentarily found himself speechless. Up to the present time he'd thought the worst thing that could happen to him, was to run into his own father. Apparently, he'd been wrong, Theodore thought. Running into a teenage-version of his Head of House was even more disturbing.

Eloquent as ever, Theodore kept impersonating a fish and stared.

Ah, yes -- another of the new students, judging by his jaw's sudden fear of heights. Severus was tempted to ask if he'd grown another head whilst he wasn't paying attention, but he managed to hold his tongue. Or at least to hold back that particular sarcastic query. "What is it?" he snapped, his impatience at the staring that seemed to follow him wherever he went these days finally getting the better of him. "You lot from the village are always staring at me. Why?"

Hannah had actually reached out and grabbed Theodore's arm in a fit of slight panic at the snapping of one Severus Snape. Another jump from the blonde girl. Severus Snape had always made her nervous, and it seemed, even after the offer of sleeping potion, that didn't change with him being their age.

"I-I'm sorry. I g-got turned around. And I'm sure Theodore did as well. We'll just go back."

She was trying to very hard to be normal, but really, being in such close vicinity to the man... in his own turf... made her beyond nervous. She'd have to make sure to start chatting with the portraits again, just to make sure she didn't take a wrong turn somewhere anymore.

Severus narrowed his eyes, shining the light from his wand on the girl's face. She looked vaguely familiar, and she was obviously jittery, though he couldn't help wondering if that was only because he had startled her just now, or if it was something else. Then again, perhaps it was a combination of both, he thought, finally putting his finger on where he'd seen her likeness before. She was the girl who had been having trouble sleeping. Chronic sleep deprivation could certainly cause jitters.

"Miss Ashford, isn't it?" he asked quietly, frowning. "Have you been sleeping any better lately?"

Curiously enough, it was the touch on his arm that brought Theodore's attention back to the present. He gave Hannah a look that spoke of complete and utter surprise, then turned back to Snape. Who was a teenager.
Theodore shook his head. He still had trouble with the concept.

Finally, plastering a fake smile on his face, the freshly-reshuffled Ravenclaw stepped forward and offered his hand to the other boy. "Snape, right? Someone told me you're pretty good at potions." He laughed, going through a variety of lies to tell his former Head of House. Finally, he settled for the easiest choice. "We used to be pretty fascinated with potions at the village, so you became a bit of a celebrity once word got around you're good with them."

"By the way, I'm Theodore No...Newcastle."

"Yes. Hannah Ashford. That's me." She ran the hand that wasn't holding onto Theodore through her hair and took a breath. Oh the things that were just royally messed up in her life were numerous... and this was the biggest one. But hey, at least she wasn't going through this one alone.

"I'm afraid I haven't been sleeping any better, as you can see. I thought perhaps a walk could help. And then I ran into Theodore, who took a wrong turn and offered to walk me back to my common room."

Her hand tightened slightly on his arm, kind of a signal that he should go along with it. Might be a way to keep him out of trouble for being out after curfew as well. And she had to applaud him on his quick thinking when it came to Snape. Praise would hopefully work.

Nodding curtly, Severus lowered his wand and transferring it to his left hand. That was ... odd. His reputation for proficiency with the Dark Arts usually preceded his reputation with Potions by a mile or two. In fact, most people would have considered Lily the one to ask for help with Potions instead of him, although now he thought about it, that could be due mostly to Slughorn's talking Lily up. (Whenever the Land Walrus set to bragging about his students, Lily's name was always on the tip of his tongue, and Severus' name was conveniently never mentioned, despite the fact that he and Lily worked together on almost every potion.) If the villagers were fascinated with Potions, however, he supposed it made sense -- even if it was also odd, in and off itself, for a village to have a collective obsession like that.

"How do you do, Newcastle?" he asked, shaking the other boy's hand.

Now the light was a little lower, Severus noticed that Miss Ashford had her hand on Newcastle's arm. There was a time, not so long ago, when seeing such a display of affection alone would have put him in an exceedingly bad mood. He inwardly smiled, however, remembering that he had a lunch date the following day. On the other hand, if this was the real reason why they were out after curfew...

"I'm not -- ah -- interrupting -- anything, am I?" he asked, eyebrows rising suggestively.

"Otherwise than getting lost in here?" Theodore smiled, still going along with his improvisation. "Fine."

"Apparently I'm better at finding other common rooms than my own." He shrugged, then blushed ever so slightly - and hated his innate shyness for doing so. "I assure you, you're interrupting nothing but a discussion whether our collective fascination with Potions - and our frequent handling of them - might be the reason why we of all people survived. Perhaps something in the fumes worked as a kind of vaccine." Merlin, he was good at this, Theodore congratulated himself. Once he was back in his time, the young man decided, he'd write a book. A long one.

"I see," Severus answered, nodding again. But he couldn't help thinking that something in Newcastle's story didn't quite add up. If they were all so good at potion-making, for instance, why hadn't Miss Ashford already made herself a sleeping draught? Surely she would know which ones had trivial side effects and so could be used more often, and which should be used sparingly, at best? He didn't say anything along those lines, however, choosing instead to comment on the location of their respective common rooms.

"Well, if you need a hint, the Ravenclaw common room is in one of the towers, and decidedly not in the dungeons. The Hufflepuff common room is," he added, turning his attention to Miss Ashford, "but I'm afraid you can't reach it from here. You'll need to head back the way you came and take the stairs up into the entrance hall. There is another stairwell on the other side of the Great Hall, and the corridor beyond will dead end near the entrance to the Hufflepuff common room."

She nodded, biting her lip at the fact that Snape had thought they were out together. Not that she wouldn't mind... Theodore was actually very good looking. But so soon after Justin, she just couldn't fathom anything of the sort. Plus there was the whole fact that someone of Theodore's lineage and upbringing probably wouldn't be interested in the slightest in a Muggle-born like herself.

"Thank you, Snape. I appreciate the directions. And I may take you up on that sleeping draught soon."

Theodore's eyebrow rose as his curiosity was piqued. He didn't want the conversation to end this quickly. This was Severus Snape, for Merlin's sake! How often did one get the opportunity to interview your former Head of House as a teenager?

"Excuse me if I'm wrong," he smiled, "But I was under the impression that only the members of a particular House are supposed to know where it is." How utterly fascinating. Snape looked so...normal. It was unsettling.

Theodore looked between Hannah and his former professor. Surely she must be as fascinated as he was.

Hannah was worried she'd mess up on a massive level and clue her former Potions teacher in on the fact that their story wasn't exactly kosher.

"I thought it was common knowledge as to where the Houses were located, just the password was secret," Hannah replied, looking at Theodore curiously.

"In my experience, it's somewhere in between those two extremes," Severus answered, shrugging. "Some people couldn't be arsed to know where any common room is except their own, and others commit every detail of the castle's layout to memory. Seeing as I'm a prefect, I would belong in the latter category. I can't count the number of times I've had to point a lost first year in the right direction, and here we are, scarcely into the second term." He frowned slightly, looking from Miss Ashford to Newcastle and back again. "Though I suppose technically, the two of you are rather like first years, as well -- at least in that regard."

Theodore raised an eyebrow, his ego bruised. Of course Snape's words meant that his ruse was - at least partially - working, but being compared to a First Year wasn't something he liked. He gave the other man - boy, Merlin was Snape even younger than him now? - a tight lipped smile and nodded.

"Well, feel free to point. A map would be helpful, too."

First years? In this castle? Ha! But she wouldn't let that thought out in the open.

Looking up at Theodore, Hannah's eyes widened slightly. Was he really poking fun at Severus Snape? Given, he wasn't the feared professor that he would become, yet, but that didn't mean that he still didn't make Hannah nervous as a goose. She reached up to touch his shoulder slightly and cleared her throat.

"Maybe we should be on our way now? I can walk you to Ravenclaw and then go to Hufflepuff if you'd like."

Though he felt a small snigger coming on, Severus managed to curb the urge to a mere smirk. He'd apparently got a rise out of the other boy simply by suggesting -- quite accurately -- that this was his first year at Hogwarts. That was all too amusing. "The Divination classroom is at the top of the North Tower. The Owlery is located in the South Tower. The Gryffindors occupy the West Tower, and I think -- by process of elimination -- you can work out for yourself where Ravenclaw Tower is." If you actually belong in Ravenclaw, that is, he added mentally, his smirk widening.
