In the Library (open)
Lily sighed, staring into the stacks of the library. She had a lot of work to do, but she was not really in the correct state of mind to do it. She mentally chastised herself for taking too much time doing other things - reading, writing those penpal responses. Sometimes it wasn't so easy to get back into the swing of school.

Eventually, she came to the shelf she needed, and picked the three books she needed. She started flipping the pages of one of the books when she ran directly into someone.

"Oh! I'm sorry! I wasn't paying any attention."

Making his escape from the library shouldn't have been so difficult. He had finally been able to focus on lessons, being away from the common room where he was certain to find his attention wandering. Whether or not Harry wanted to admit it, Malfoy had a point as far as lessons went. He couldn't afford to do poorly because of his selfish reasonings. He found himself walking into the path of one of those reasonings.

"It's okay," he dismissed her easily. "Happens to everyone." He tried to play it smooth, keep things as calm as he could. He wanted nothing more than to hug her and tell her that he was her son, but he couldn't. He couldn't do much of anything, except for just be her friend.

She glanced quickly at the boy who she ran into. "Oh, Potter, it's you," she groaned, rolling her eyes before she took a closer look.

Wait, that wasn't Potter at all. It was someone who looked remarkably like him, but he was the boy that she had spoken to briefly at the beginning of the term feast. "Oh, no, I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else. You're one of the new students, right? I'm Lily, I don't know if I mentioned that before."

For a second his heart sped up with adrenaline, and he thought that perhaps she knew. As stupid as it was, he sort of hoped that she would have known. "I'm Harry. Harry Emerson." He added his psuedonym more as a reminder to himself.

This boy... Harry, that is, looked at her rather strangely at the table and seemed rather nervous now. She had never really considered herself particularly unnerving.

"So, how are you enjoying Hogwarts so far? I mean, I know we have the same classes and everything, so if you need help... I don't know how far along you were in your old school. Oh, and the potions textbooks here are complete rubbish, so if you need help with that, too, just ask."

"Hogwarts is good," he told her, shifting on the balls of his feet. He was trying to restrain himself, something that he was sure was making him look like a nervous fool. "Help would probably fantastic," Harry added, figuring that it would be the perfect way to kill two birds with one stone. He could spend more time with his mum and less time on studies when he could be observing the way that things were around here. It was when she brought up potions, however, that he was reminded of his mother's interaction with Snape. He wasn't particularly fond of that.

"I'm glad you are enjoying it so far. Is there anything you need help with now? I know we have that Transfiguration homework and that Potion we were doing in class earlier." Lily had noticed that most of the students were pretty adept in their classes - maybe their village had an accelerated program or something. Who knew what they actually had covered, though, so it couldn't hurt to ask.

"I could always use help with Potions," he admitted with some sincere sheepishness. He had always known that his mother had been somewhat good with potions and that he hadn't. Of course, that probably had a lot to do with Snape, in both examples he supposed. "If you have time, of course."

She was rather happy he asked for help in Potions - not that she didn't have other subjects she was good at, but really, she liked talking about Potions a great deal. "Oh, that's good, I do like Potions. The potion today - it's rather silly, actually, but Severus and I - Severus Snape, he's in Slytherin - Anyway, we figured out that you get the right color if you stir anticlockwise and then clockwise, rather than just clockwise. I don't even know what the authors of the textbook were thinking half the time."

She had to go and mention the one person he had hoped to effectively avoid in this time period. Snape was never a good person to run into regardless of the year, Harry figured. Of course, the fact that the man was friends with his mum didn't nothing to please him either. "You're friends with Snape?" he asked, just making sure that he completely understood the situation. "Just trying to understand the way that whole House thing worked. I just thought that Gryffindors and Slytherins didn't get along." He figured he covered that nicely.

She wondered why he had referred to Severus by his last name - maybe it was some strange thing in their town. But picking up on the House divisions couldn't be too hard, so she understood why he might be surprised.

"Well, Severus and I have been best friends since we were children - way before Hogwarts. He wanted me to be in Slytherin, since that's what house he wanted, but I daresay I ended up where I should be. I have some... issues with his Slytherin housemates."

He understood all too well what her issues with the Slytherins were. He had remembered what it had been like watching her through Snape's memory, hearing the names that she and Hermione had been called. "Well, I'm glad you're in Gryffindor. I don't know who I would've gotten to help me with Potions otherwise." He was going to have to watch his tongue.

Lily laughed. "Well, I'd let you ask for help even if I were a Slytherin." Despite his nervousness, Lily liked the boy, and for some reason felt drawn to helping him. "Really, the best thing I can tell you is to get on Slughorn's good side. It's a pain sometimes, actually speaking to him, but he'll let you get away with a lot."

Harry laughed with his mother a little, "Thanks, I'll remember that."
