Captain William Turner ([info]pirateboyturner) wrote in [info]hhouse,

The First Death
Who: William Turner, Ichabod Crane and OPEN! (Tag everyone and anyone!)
When: Late night around 10 or so
Where: Den
Rating: R for mention of blood and death
Status: Incomplete

Dear William was sitting in the den with his nose deep in a book. He was frustrated that it seemed to him that he was the only one that was trying to figure out how the hell he and everyone else got here and more importantly how the hell to get out.

He groans and slams the book closed and throws it back to the rest of the pile. The cloud of dust floating up as he pinches the bridge of his nose. This electic light was wonderous for reading but it hurt his eyes. He found himself missing the sea more than Elizabeth. He didn't sleep at night since he was supposed to be shepparding the souls at this time, yet each book only spoke of the history of the house and the structure than he's more important questions.

He sighs and leans over to pick up the next book. He leans back and opens to start reading once more.

Ichabod was not the sort of man would could simply rest for days on end, regardless of the circumstances. Granted he had rested for the majority of the day after his incident, but he became more restless the longer he remained in his room. There was a mystery to be solved, and lingering in a sickbed would not solve it.

Katrina would understand- besides, he was feeling far better.

Dressed in his usual attire and walking just a bit more slowly, Ichabod took to exploring the halls once more- but with more caution than he had exhibited previously. What rooms were unlocked he would glance in, taking note as to the layout of the house; it would no doubt come in handy eventually.

He paused by the door of one room, a soft thump drawing his attention as he pressed his hand to the door, opening it just a bit. Within the well lit room sat a familiar figure; Ichabod remembered meeting this young man when the strange man had called them to his presence.

"Mr. Turner," he greeted the young man as he noted the books. "Forgive me for disturbing you." He prepared to close the door and leave the man to his peace, but he did pause for a moment- after all, there were books at hand. Naturally he was curious.

Will was turning the page of the book as Ichabod spoke. He looks up and gives a smile. He remembered the man as well and grateful for a familiar and friendly face. He found the Constable more pleasant and well, understandable than Jack in the brief time that he spoke with him. He had the feeling that this man would be a fine companion to have in the adventure of finding a way out of here.

"You are not disturbing me, Ichabod," he says remembering that the man wished for him to call him by his first name as he moved to stand up as was the gentleman thing to do. "I was merely trying to find answers in books that seem only to tell meaningless things." He throws the book in his hand back to the pile and turns back to the constable.

Will was more at ease in his attire now. His shirt open slightly to show his chest scar. No bandana in his hair, it was tied pulled back in a loose ponytail. The bandana was tied to his belt. Sword was leaning against the arm of the chair.

Ichabod smiled slightly as he entered, remembering that speaking to this gentleman was like a touch of home; similar time period and all. At that point the similarity stopped.

"I find that books rarely hold meaningless things," he offered, not at all trying to offend or condescend. Granted the man generally kept to scientific texts, but the idea of most books being worthless... well, maybe some were.

He walked to the stack of books to lift the most recently discarded one; an architectural text apparently- a history of the structure. Interesting.

"I believe the answers will be extremely difficult to discover if the behaviour of the caretaker was any indication," he offered as he returned the book to its previous place and opting to settle in a chair across from William. "But not impossible."

Cue the "huh" face from the Captain. He stares at Ichabod a moment feeling most like the time when Jack rambled on and on about things that just went over Will's head. He was a "yes" or "no" man after all. Say it straight or don't say it at all. Seems he might have been wrong about the constable. Time can only tell about a man after all.

He give a half shrug and moves to sit back down to face the constable. "In truth, I do believe that you are right yet I don't see how knowing the architecture of the building will help in getting us all out," he states firmly. "Thus, these books are useless and it seems I have more searching to do."

He raised an eyebrow than as if he noticed something different about the man. There was a wound slightly visable on his neck and he seemed paler than normal. Also, his wife wasn't with him, which Will found odd. If Elizabeth was here with him she would be glued to his hip and that's a fact (even if she protested the whole thing the whole time, he'd take the ear full just to make sure she was safe). "What happened, sir?" he asks suddenly motioning to his neck.

Ichabod thought on that very point; what would knowing the architecture of the building have to do with finding its secrets? "I would imagine that it would be advantageous to know the structure of your ship," he asked more than stated. "Facets that could be used to your advantage, hidden areas perhaps; they won't give the answer we seek, I'm sure."

With the letter wishing them luck on their survival, the most menial piece of information might become valuable- not to mention the other occupants.

It was then that he realized that the sailor was looking at him oddly, and he became a bit self conscious about it. It was immediately followed by the question that he couldn't answer; Ichabod's expression showed his mild confusion until William motioned.

Oh yes, his neck.

"Nothing," he answered in a mildly sheepish tone, reaching up to adjust his cravat. "I fear I was less than careful; these things do happen." Not that he believed the young man would believe it was a shaving accident, but it was as reasonable as any other explanation.

"I have been exploring the house, and have found nothing of interest yet." Yet being the key word. "I assume for you it is the same?"

He would give the man that. Knowing the ins and outs of the place would be useful in helping them survive but not escape.
So, he nodded once in agreement to that statement.

Though, he kept the raised eyebrow expression at Ichabod's explaination and expression. He was hiding something. Will could tell that much.

"You assume correct. Just empty rooms and more confused people," he states leaning back as he decides to drop the previous topic. He'll find out sooner or later after all. "Though, I must admit that you and your wife are the only two I have spoken with in depth. I've kept to myself mostly."

Claudia had been playing the piano in the parlor for Louis when she heard the scream. She immediately stops playing and tilts her head, listening carefully. There was no second scream. "Louis...." she said nervously, sliding from the piano bench and heading to the door. "Should we check?"

Louis looks up from the book he was reading having heard the scream himself. He stands and places the book on the couch before walking over to Claudia and placing his hand on her shoulder gently.

"We should," he says calmly before looking down at her. "Would you like me to carry you?"

It was a natural curiousity. He smelt the death and in this strange place it would be to their advantage to investigate.

"Yes, please." she said, holding her arms out to him. Claudia was very quick to forgive Louis and the indiscretion from the night before was already forgotten.

The scream scared her, just a little. In this place, it could be her screams next. It could be Louis' screams. The thought chilled her to the very bone.

He leans down to pick her up and hold her tightly to him as he stood and moved to walk towards where they heard the scream. He was glad that she was agreeable to letting him carry her. It was easier for him to protect her that way. She was so fragile after all.

Her gentle breath on his temple calmed him enough to where his steps where slow in stride. It was when they reached the view of the crime scene that he stopped short and caught his breath.

There was Constable Crane kneeling over a dead woman in a puddle of blood. Dead blood. It held no smell or enticement, yet the sense held his interest enough that he was stuck dumb in speech and movement.

In Louis' arms, Claudia had a good veiw of the dead woman. The blood reached her senses and she shivered. But it was useless. Dead blood. A waste.

"Constable?" she said softly. He was probably still afraid of her. She had apologized, but she had also almost killed him. He was probably touchy about the whole thing.

Ichabod had turned the woman's face toward him, fully engrossed in the examination after William left. The marks were fairly clear, and yet there was something about them that still disturbed him.

So engrossed in it was he that he did not hear the approach of anyone else- not that these would be heard unless they wanted to be.

It was the sound of that small voice that drew his attention, and he started as he looked toward the pair- and here he was, kneeling by a puddle of blood before vampires. He wasn't aware of the fact that the blood of the newly dead would have so little effect on them; his knowledge had been fairly limited.

That would need to change.

"Claudia. Louis," he greeted them both as he stood quickly, taking a step away from the body as he wiped his hands with his kerchief. It didn't help much. "I suppose you heard her scream as well? Does she look familiar to you?" Perhaps they had seen her before.

Sweeney's exploration of the house had thus far proved to be futile; there was no sign of the enigmatic man Nellie had spoken of during their exchange in the conservatory, nor were there any clues that might suggest as to what was happening to them. A wasted effort, one might say, but the mansion was gigantic and the barber still had a long search ahead of him. He was not about to give up anytime soon.

Turning a corner, Sweeney's heart nearly burst from his chest when the piercing, feminine scream reached his ears. His pace quickened, and he began cautiously moving down the corridor to the source of the shriek.

She had ran as far as she could from the scene in the kitchen. Never wanting to believe who she saw there. Though, in her heart she knew it wasn't a dream and the nightmare was again real.

Mr. Todd was less frighting after that though...

She was searching the halls again for either Ichabod or Mrs. Lovett when the shriek rang and she span with a gasp.

"Oh dear..."

She picks up her dress and turns to run to the source of the scream when she notices a familiar outline walking quickly down the corridor. "Mr. Todd!" she calls to him as she picked up her pace a bit. In his company, she at least wasn't alone.

He looked over his shoulder, stopping dead in his tracks.

"...Mrs. Crane."

He had not seen her since their encounter in the kitchen with the swordsman. That was one brawl he would not have been able to win, so why did he-

A razor would have been no match against a sword. He had an advantage; you did not.

Still, Sweeney had never been one to back away from a confrontation, and he had only grudgingly done so when he saw that Katrina had already retreated. It was difficult for the barber to admit, but he was mildly relieved that the swordsman had not given chase to them.

"You're alive," He finally spoke, bluntly.

When she reaches him, she pauses to bring her hand to her breast and close her eyes. Her breathing labored from running and she takes slow deep breaths.

Once she had enough breath to speak, her eyes open to look up at him. Relief was there in them and something else that might be hard to read. A soft smile at his statement, for in the obvious there is sometimes humor.

"Yes, thankfully," she says softly and still a bit breathless. "I wanted to thank you for your bravery in the kitchen earlier. I'm in your debt." She places her hand gently on his arm.

She pulls back as he stepped away. She didn't mean to offend and her eyes cast down a moment before looking back up at him as her hands move to clasp in front of her. He looked so much like him, it was easy for her to forget.

Until he spoke or reacted to her presense. She didn't wish for him to be uneasy around her. He did save her life afterall.

"Than it will be a silent debt," she says simply with a slight bow. "I cannot just simply leave it forgotten."

Katrina nods to his comments. Despite herself, she believed him when he said that Mrs. Lovett was fine. She couldn't explain why. Perhaps because she wanted to more than anything.

When they get close enough to the scene at the end of the staircase, Katrina takes it in within a moment and gives a gasp of horror. Her hand going over her mouth as she turns away. She recognized the vampires, which frightened her as well when she moves to look over her shoulder again slowly. Her eyes wide in horror as she looks from the body to her husband.

Ichabod was still searching for other signs of mischief beyond those that he had already noticed, running the facts as he knew them through his mind over and over. Whatever else he might have, he needed a journal of some sort, something to allow him to "see" the intangible.

He was distracted by the gasp, and turned to spot his wife descending the stairs- thankfully safe and intact. "Katrina!" he called to her as he quickly stood and stepped around the body. "Are you well?" One hand went to the banister as he prepared to ascend the stairs to her when he realized that she was not alone.

Sweeney was standing beside Katrina when the fellow at the bottom of the stairs called out to her. He watched the man in

black moved to meet them, and the barber had to steady himself from stumbling off the stairs. He was reeling, his pale face looking decidedly more flushed than usual.

This isn't real. I'm not seeing this.

Yet, here he was. In two places at once.

Claudia tilts her head a little. Well, this was interesting. Obviously the blonde woman was the constable's wife, Katrina. The other man...He was the spitting image of Claudia's felled dinner.

But he smelled of death. Reeked of it. Her eyes narrowed in his direction a bit. He was a threat.

Katrina picks up her dress with one hand as the other holds the banister as she quickly descends the stairs to him. She hugs tightly, needing his comfort from all that had happened.

"I am well, but thanks only to Mr. Todd," she explains pulling out of the hug to turn as she gesture to the man before turning back to him. She knew that they would have to get the awkwardness of meeting someone so similar looking over with before she could get any of her questions answered and tell him about the Hessian. She was fine with that, just content that he was safe next to her.

Ichabod came to a complete halt as his attention fell to the man near his wife- was it truly a man and not some spirit masquerading? It was almost like looking in a mirror- but not quite.

He reached for his wife, but it was difficult to ignore this... twin... standing before him. "I am so glad you are safe," he said as he finally pulled his attention back to Katrina. "I had feared the worst when I heard the scream."
