Characters: Entire Wizarding World
Setting: May 2. Wizarding Museum of History. 7:30pm-2:00am
Summary: The War Memorial and Victory Ball.

The Ministry had been host to the War Memorial and Victory ball since the the year following You-Know-Who's defeat in 1998. Every year the memorial service was held at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where many lost their lives during the final battle. Then later in the evening on May the seconds a Victory Ball was held in honour of Harry Potter and all those who fought at The Wizarding Museum of History on Diagon Alley.

The 2004 event was just like those that had come before it. The only difference was that with every year there seemed to be an additional ounce of class and formality added to it. Those who attended were usually in attendance to save face and to rub elbows with their social superiors. There were many reason to have attended that didn't exactly come with "celebration," however there were some civilians who gladly attended for the simple fact that it was a party. It was one of the largest gatherings of the year.

The entrance to the Museum was designed in beautiful marble and gold. There were a few photographers from local magazines looking to snap photographs of famous attendees and high society individuals. They sat idle as common folks filtered through the large metal doors in their choice in evening attire. There was a buzz of people present and a distant sound of wizarding music being played through invisible speakers to match the sounds being played in the main hall beyond.

The main hall of the Museum was decked in the annual victory decor. A large dance floor was in place in the middle of the space and tables surrounded the outlying walls for guests to claim for their own. There was a stage near the front where the occasional Ministry official and Minister Kingsly would address the guests in the occasional welcome speech and announcement. There was an orchestral band complete to the right of the stage complete with every instrument known to wizarding kind. They played everything from popular music on the wireless to traditional waltzes and even a few wizarding jigs that only older members of the party would remember.

Michael Corner & Open

Michael Corner was dressed in a classic black tux with baby blue accents and a tie that gradually changed colour every hour. Anthony, Terry, and Himself had made it a habit to prepare for the victory ball every year complete with an all man shopping outing to tux and dress robe renters. Needless to say Corner wasn't the biggest fan to the idea of buying formal attire of his own. He liked changing it up every year...renting made more sense.

It was a night that promised many a good laugh and certainly a few memorable dance numbers. The boys had made it a habit to attend the function every year not only out of service but...it was one of the better parties of the year.

Having arrived about half an hour before with Terry, Anthony, Morag, and Sophia the group had managed to find a table to claim as their home base for the evening. Michael had stepped out to the washroom a moment and upon his return found the table practically empty save for a few spare belongings that clearly proved the table was occupied. Michael gave the dance floor a scan assuming the other four had managed to give dancing a try. He couldn't recognize anyone to be honest...

Michael paused a moment and took the liberty to drink down a glass of champaign that was sitting idle on the table. He absently wondered where the rest of his party had gone off to when someone patted him on the back and he turned to see who it was.

From several tables away, Lavender spotted Michael standing beside an empty table and smirked to herself. Though she had Seamus for company, she knew that he wouldn't mind if she slipped away for a few minutes to talk to someone else. Carefully, Lavender maneuvered through the maze of tables until she came up behind Michael and gave him a tap on the back to get his attention.

"Hello, handsome," she said when he turned around and immediately leaned in to give him a hug. "Where's your date?" Lavender pulled at the capped sleeve of her black cocktail dress and grinned at him when the hug ended.

She hoped that he was able to find a date, anyway. Having to turn him down because Seamus asked first had been difficult for Lavender. She hated to disappoint people, but she also knew that Michael was a gorgeous man and could very easily keep himself entertained without a date.

"'Lo beautiful," he'd greeted her compliment with one of his own as they gave a hug. Michael made note that Lavender really was rather stunning this evening. Course, the former-Gryffindor always was on the more attractive side regardless of what she was wearing. To be honest, the former-ravenclaw just liked seeing the ladies all dolled up. He'd always been a fan of seeing the girls he knew and saw on a regular basis all cleaned up. It shed some light on their femininity and...other such body parts.

"No date," he announced as he placed the empty glass that was in his hand back on the table. "Figured since I couldn't go with you there was no point saving myself for just one lady," he teased with a cheeky grin and a playful wink. To be entirely honest, Michael wasn't hurting from the rejection. He'd seen Lavender's journal entry about attending the ball without a date and jumped on the opportunity to ask her...because he could. He didn't think it right for any girl to go alone - especially someone like Lavender.

It seemed that a number of the girls he knew were too socially dumb to take up the opportunity to attend the party. All too above functions that required them to dress up...blah, blah, blah. One big fat excuse to not have a good time. Really, he didn't understand it.

Gwendolyn Montgomery arrived at the Wizarding Museum of History fashionably late, as was nearly expected of society women. She was dressed in a sleek deep green dress which hugged her body in all of the right places with a plunging neckline to display her assets and a cinched waist that showed off her tiny figure. In head to toe green with matching golden jewellery, Gwen looked every bit the Slytherin. It hadn't been her intention, but as she'd spotted the dress there was no denying how good she looked in it. Gwen, of course, had agonized over the choice, but after much discussion with Mel, and plenty of test runs, the green was deemed best.

This was hardly the first such function Gwen had attended. Indeed, she's been to the previous events as she rather loved dressing up and going on parade. There were political reasons of course, and as an actress it was fairly important to keep oneself in the spotlight, but Gwen mainly went for the free alcohol and dancing; the rest was just a bonus. Arriving at the Museum alone, Gwen swept into the entryway, past the occasional flashing camera and through into the main hall. Finding a table, and setting her things down, Gwendoln scanned the room for familiar faces.

Lavender Brown & Parvati Patil
[info]ecrivainfaux

After parting ways with Michael, Lavender spotted her best friend standing near the edge of the dance floor and practically skipped up to her (which was quite an accomplishment in the medium-heeled shoes she was wearing). The Victory Ball was meant to be a cheerful atmosphere, but Lavender almost felt guilty for acting so happy. Put simply: she couldn't help it! She enjoyed parties, dressing up and talking (...or gossiping) to friends.

"Did you see the woman with the pink dyed peacock feathers on the back of her dress?" she asked Parvati, lowering her voice even though the music was loud enough for the people standing a few feet away not to have heard. "The moment I saw her, I knew I had to come find you."

Parvati had gone back and forth about actually showing up to the ball, but ultimately she'd decided that it was worse to miss out on something than to have the experience. After all, she knew what sitting at home was like.

Trouble was, she knew what balls were like, as well.

Still, she'd shown up, dressed to the nines. It wasn't tasteful, but it was fun. Parvati had a predisposition towards beads, jewels, and fringe. Her hair hadn't escaped enhancement, and there was even a crystal beauty mark below her left eye. She would have looked like she intended to be the entertainment for the evening more than anything else, if her posture hadn't been a tell towards her boredom.

She perked up when Lavender approached, however, grinning widely. "Pink peacock feathers. I didn't! Point her out!"

Lavender exaggerated her shortness by stretching her neck as far as she possibly could to get a better look over the crowded hall. The woman, it seemed, had managed to manipulate her large, feathered dress well enough to move out of the room they were in and probably toward the buffet hall.

Frowning, Lavender slumped back to her normal height (plus heels) and shrugged at Parvati, "I swear I wasn't just imagining her. She'll come back around."

Taking Parvati's appearance in, Lavender smirked. Instead of looking gaudy like the woman with peacock feathers coming out of her arse, Parvati managed to make herself one of the most interesting looking women in the room. It was one of the many things that Lavender admired the most about her.

"How about you? Seen anything amazingly hideous?"

"No more than the usual," Parvati said, her coffee eyes scanning the room, taking measure of the others in the room. Wizarding fashion had always been hit and miss in her opinion, but a lot of people were going for safe, toned down ensembles.

There was nothing remarkable about several dozen silk gowns in sensible, flattering hues. Most of the women were playing at being celebrities, and wanted to be considered glamorous and elegant. It was disappointing that most of the male wizards had adopted tuxedos instead of dress robes after Muggle styles. Truly obnoxious, formal male dress robes had always been her favorite... Still, Parvati was able to pick out a few winners in the masses. "Let's see... sequins, tulle, plunging necklines, plunging backlines... Oh, who's that? Are those shoulder pads? She looks like she has wings!"

Parvati extended a slender arm, index finger out to indicate a woman whose back was turned to them. "Stiff, little gold wings. I wonder who designed that?"

Morag hadn't intended to attend the Ball. In fact, the only reason she was there was because Michael had all but made her show up. Though Morag had no problems blaming things on Michael, she often did. It was the first one she'd managed to attend thus far, having begged off the previous four by claiming that her coursework was far too complex. It wasn't that Morag had issues with the charity event, in fact she thought it honourable. It was more so the fact that she'd always been rubbish at social events that included formal clothing and dancing. As it was, Morag still had every intention on staying just an hour or so and then heading over to Lisa's. She couldn't very well let her friend down.

Morag was surprised that she'd managed to find a dress last minute. It was a dark blue dress that didn't make her look completely horrible, which as far as Morag was concerned was a downright miracle. She'd arrived with Michael, Terry, Anthony and Sophia a little while ago, though like they had wandered off for a moment. Intending on grabbing something to eat and heading back to their base table, Morag headed first into the Buffet hall. She grabbed a plate, and reached out for the spoon just as someone else did. "Sorry."

Megan had made the habit of attending the Ball since the first year. Megan hadn't fought in the war or the Hogwarts battle. She'd luckly been called out on an away game fir the Cannons reserves two days prior to the final battle and didn't have to experience the horrors. All the same, however, she attended the memorial service and then the ball to honour those who did...and to get some face time with the public.

That evening she'd settled for a simple black dress that accented her legs and gave her the freedom to move as she pleased. One thing Megan Jones had issues with was dressing up in clothes that she had to fidget with all evening and had to worry about ruining. Instead of choosing a classic floor length gown that made her look short and pregnant it was decided knee length and playful was good enough. Plus it was just imperative that she be able to dance in it. It took her a month to find the perfect outfit but finally....here she was.

Standing at the buffet table, Megan hadn't had the opportunity to eat an actually meal all day. A few bites of grapefruit that morning was what had managed to keep her from falling over all day. Because of this she decided she needed to entertain her stomach first thing. Leaving Zacharais at their table Megan found herself almost ready to fight someone for a spoon. She looked up at her contender then smiled as she claimed the piece of silverwear.

"Yeah, you better be," she teased but quickly changed the conversation with a short laugh. "You look beautiful, Morag! I thought you said you weren't coming the last time I asked..."

Morag blinked in surprise at the answer, actually preparing for an argument, though the look quickly turned into a smile as she noticed who it was. The smile stayed though her cheeks turned a deep shade of pink at the mention of her appearance. She still felt rather bad coming to the dance when her mates couldn't go. Especially since she'd promised.

"Thank you. You look really great yourself," she said, glancing down at the silverware, and picked one out. "Yeah, that's Michael's fault. He all but forced me to come," she smiled, okay so it wasn't entirely true, but it made for a better story. "I'm sure I won't be staying very long. Promised Lisa I'd pop over for a while."

Megan had chuckled at the idea of anyone making Morag do anything as she moved down the line. "Yeah," the quidditch player nodded. "Can't stay too long either. We've got a game against the Harpies tomorrow and I doubt they'd appreciate the lot of us showing up hungover."

She took a helping of cesar salad and as she finished moved along down the line. Megan looked to Morag and asked, "Are you working that match? Or you on the Arrows vs Kestrels game?"

Megan had been treated by Morag on more than one occasion since she started playing professional quidditch. Though they weren't particularly close friends they seemed to be on good enough terms to keep small talk going.

There weren't very many people that could make Morag do anything she didn't want to do, as she could truly be quite stubborn. There were always exceptions, and Michael was certainly one of them. "Something tells me they'd much rather you were drunk," Morag corrected with a laugh as she moved down the row with Megan, picking up a bit of pasta salad and fruit here and there. She didn't exactly know Megan very well, Morag tended not to get on too well with non-Ravenclaws, but after the years spent treating her and her team-mates, Morag had found that they actually got on well.

"I am," Morag said, in response to Megan's question. "There should be enough mediwizards to cover the Arrows game, but I'd rather be on hand for your game," Morag added as she finished off her plate by selecting some lettuce and added vinegar dressing.

Gwen excused herself from her partner and after a promise that she just needed to get something to drink, headed away from the dance floor and toward the buffet hall. Making her way through the somewhat crowded room, Gwendolyn finally managed to head toward the bar. Smiling at the handsome bartender, she leaned slightly forward against the bar. "I'll have a glass of your finest champagne please," she said smiling sweetly at the bloke.

Anthony was starving. He felt like he hadn’t eaten in days. This, of course, wasn’t true. But he always felt quite hungry after he started drinking – his stomach always seemed to crave feed to offset his consumptions. He’d travelled to the buffet alone, leaving his friends to chat amongst themselves. In all honesty, he was hoping to see Katie. He was feeling quite tipsy and thought that now would be a perfect time to make his move. Unfortunately she wasn’t near the buffet when he got there – no matter, he’d find her after he got his stomach to stop growling.

He found himself in line behind a pretty blonde, who was ordering champagne please. He raised an eyebrow, “Champagne, seriously?” Sure, the event was a ball and everyone, including himself, was dressed for the part – however, he still didn’t believe in conforming to all of the niceties. “You ought to try Firewhiskey or vodka – makes things a little more fun. Not so stuffy,” he added, offering her a rather large grin.

Gwendolyn turned her head as she heard someone question her order. She raised a perfectly shaped brow herself and glanced at the bloke accusing her of bad taste. Her irritated look was rather quickly replaced with an amused smile as he started to explain himself. Ah well at least there was a reason to question her choice. Ever if, as far as he was concerned was completely unnecessary for a function such as this.

Turning around completely she rested her elbows on the bar as she glanced at the stranger. "I would, but I save orders as such for the less sophisticated situations," Gwendolyn said once he'd finished speaking. Just for a laugh, she played up her posh accent, see what was made of it.

Anthony found the girl rather attractive but would have humored her regardless. He was quite the outgoing sort and had no problems striking up conversations with complete strangers – be they beautiful women or just other blokes. A social creature by nature, Anthony had never understood those who preferred to keep to themselves. The shyer types, like Terry, usually just made him shake his head. They were really missing out on a lot life had to offer by not going out of their way to meet new people.

Of course, this girl seemed to be playing the “better than thou” card but Anthony shrugged it off. He didn’t know her. For all he knew, she was a poser – as he suspected most people were. “Whats sophisticated about a victory celebration?” he asked. As far as Anthony was concerned, everyone should be getting drunk and partying it up. He didn’t see why there were people who were trying to turn this into something classier than it should be. Voldemort was dead. They should be partying not pretending they were at a posh function. “The dark lord is still dead and we’re all better off for it. Seems to me we should be getting sloshed, crying over our losses, and enjoying the fucking fact we survived. The ‘sophisticated’ air just seems really out of place.”

He shook his head. He didn’t really mean to make this at all political. “Aye, at least there’s plenty of birds to catch the eye. You’re looking pretty fantastic yourself.” Anthony quickly decided that changing the subject was a better idea – and there was nothing he liked more than flirting.

Turning around momentarilly to retrieve the glass the bartender had poured her, Gwen tasted it and smiling in satisfaction turned her attention back to the bloke standing across from her. He seemed to be an amusing enough person, and after he went on about getting sloshed, Gwendolyn decided she rather liked this person.

Laughing, Gwen took a sip of the champagne. "You're probably right," she said finally. Gwen lowered her voice then as if she were revealing a massive secret. "Though, personally, I think some of these fussbuckets may just explode were they to let their hair down."

Gwendolyn laughed again, brushing a ringlet out of her eyes as he complemented her. Ah flirting, her favourite pastime. Although she was starting to wonder, however, how it was that she didn't know him. "Why thank you. You're not so bad yourself."

Katie always found this whole day weird. While celebration was in order, at the same time, it was so hard to forget the death surround the day too. It had taken her a couple years to break the nasty habit of feeling incredibly embarrassed for mentioning Fred. She even had avoided poor George for awhile because of it. Katie would like to think of herself far past all the fumbling and over all weirdness but she did allow herself to have this day.

She had arrived with Terry some time ago. It was just.. customary to go with him. He had saved her life that night years ago at Hogwarts. If it wasn't for him, she would have been suffering the same morbid fate of the names read at the memorial. Katie was forever indebted to the Ravenclaw boy. But they both ran in different social circles, and even though she was finding herself at his house more often then not lately, she wouldn't occupy his time. Besides, Katie was born with two left feet, she was sure. Dancing wasn't really her thing.

Shifting around in the deep blue dress that she had picked out with Alicia on her trip, Katie had found her way out of the claustrophobic main hall and out on the terrace. She wasn't alone, in the way of others out there, but she had lost the company she knew, and Alicia was no where to be found -- probably snogging Theo in a hallway some where. Angelina wasn't showing up, that was for sure. She would make sure she nicked some alcohol for her friend later.

Instead, she found herself flopping down into one of the open wicker chairs to shield her shoulders, which were now freezing thanks to her attire's no less than scandalous back. She looked rather angry, folding her arms over her chest and slouching ungracefully further into the seat. But really, Katie was debating whether or not to leave now, and keeping herself focused on staying warm. She would rethink her dress choices for future reference.

Staring at some small point on the floor in front of her, Katie hardly noticed the person occupying the seat across from her.

Zacharias was a horrible dancer, but a dancer he was, nonetheless. He’d torn up the flow several times already – mostly forcing Megan to accompany him but he’d taken to dragging a few of his other friends out with him as well. After dancing several numbers in a row, he’d wandered off toward the buffet, in search of a drink. His last dance had been with Hannah, so the location of Megan was unknown to him. He didn’t particularly mind though – they were their own persons. He was sure they’d eventually find each other again before the night was out.

What he didn’t understand was all the people who didn’t want to attend. It was true that Zacharias had not at all fought in the war – far from it. In fact, he’d been one of the first to escape Hogwarts. However, he was never one to turn down a party. This wasn’t exactly the usual type of setting he visited but with so many people expected to gather, he was hardly going to pass up the opportunity for some face time. If it got dull he would be sure to entertain himself in one way or another.

After he’d acquired a glass of Firewhiskey, he’d plopped himself down in a seat. He had every intention of getting back to the dance floor, but for now he was content having a drink and good look around. He half expected to be flocked by some fans soon or, in the very least, Laura or Romilda. Zacharias was a bit surprised when he noticed Katie Bell, of all people, come over and take a seat not too far away across from him. His relationship with Katie was anything but warm at this point, but Zacharias still had an itch to get under her skin whenever possible. It just so happened she’d all but dropped herself in his lap on this particular occasion.

“Katherine,” he said in quite the pleasant tone. “Lovely to see you here.”

It was clear from Katie's obvious change in facial expression that she was contemplating just flat out punching Zacharias, which was long since over due. But it was out in public and Katie was in a nice dress and looking rather feminine, so something inside of her was screaming at her to rethink her current plan of action. Working her jaw back and forth, she finally lifted her head, flashing him a rather forced smile.

Why didn't she pay attention to who was around her? Oh, and of course. Still continued to call her 'Katherine'. Just great

"Zach," Katie matched his pleasant tone far to sweetly than she should have, "What a lovely surprise it is. Didn't think some one like you was allowed out at night." With her arms still folded, she leaned forward in the chair, still giving him that condescending smirk. "Are you sure you should be even speaking to me? People might see us and get the wrong impression."

Katie harrumphed a bit, stiffening in her chair, but those arms. She would not uncross them for the life of her. Mostly a defense mechanism from her ex-boyfriend, and to hide any shaking the cool air was doing to her. It wasn't cold, she just was. "Besides, Megan should be here any moment, right? I don't need two of you ganging up and being complete pricks to me tonight."

Katie began to search toward the crowd to spot a familiar face. She would look absolutely stupid if she just got up and mingled aimlessly among the guests. It was hard not to make a complete idiot of herself in front of Zach sometimes.

Morag snuck out of the main hall after a little while. She'd never felt entirely comfortable on her own sitting at a table drinking herself silly all night long, speaking to her mates until someone eventually asked them to dance. As Morag was sure she wouldn't be asked, she taken her glass of wine and headed toward the Egyptian displays.

Of course, it hardly helped that Morag's biggest obsession was History. She'd been to the museum dozens of times in just the past few years, but the temptation was too much to pass up. Sipping her drink, Morag smiled to herself as she slowly walked down the corridor, looking at the displays. As it was after hours, the lighting was low and as far as Morag could tell there was no one else about, but truth be told she rather liked it this way. Stopping at one of the displays in order to a closer look, Morag leaned in a little to read the description. Whilst doing so, Morag felt someone touching her shoulder.

Startled, Morag whirled around, nearly toppling over on the ruddy heels she'd decided to wear. "Oh sweet Merlin," Morag said, her hand flying to her chest as if to calm her racing hear, relieved to see someone she recognised. "You startled me."

While Melinda had grown up being trained for parties, she found that there was only so much that she could stand before the entire production went to her head. Usually moments like this meant that she could excuse herself from Roger so that he would have a chance to perhaps find some more interesting company. Smiling at him lightly, she excused herself from his side and wandered out of the main hall, mostly unnoticed.

Museums were always pleasant experiences for Melinda. They were quiet, orderly and were captivating to the eye. History might not be her favorite topic, but she appreciated the importance of it and why it needed to be preserved. The dimmed lights and the absence of people only served to make it more pleasant.

Or at least she had assumed that there was no one else wandering about. Catching sight of a familiar face in the half lit room, she walked over with a smile and touched her shoulder lightly. Morag sudden whirling up startled her almost as much. Her eyes wide for a moment, she smiled once Morag recognized her. "I would have thought you would have heard my heels. Apparently I've a lighter step than I thought."

Morag blushed a little as she realised it was Melinda. She wasn't sure why she was so jumpy, but she hoped it had everything to do with the atmosphere. Nevertheless, it was hardly normal for her to be scared of someone like Melinda. Especially as they were mates.

"Sorry, I wasn't really paying attention to anything," Morag said in an attempt to excuse herself, though fairly certain that it made her sound downright daft. "I'm sure you're very sneaky though."

"Terribly sneaky. I was trained by the Auror's black ops." she teased lightly, sipping at the drink in her hand. The fact that Morag had jumped did not perturb her greatly. She had not been expecting anyone else in the halls of the museum. Truth be told, neither had she. It was a party after all, most people stayed at the party. To Melinda it seemed a perfectly logical reaction.

Passing the excuses, despite any possible daftness that may or may not exist, Melinda chuckled lightly. "It has been what seems like forever since I've seen you though. What have you been up to, anything of particular excitement?"

Morag laughed at Melinda's assertion. She took another sip from her drink as she smiled at her friend. Although Mandy didn't know Melinda all that well, she was one of the few people outside of Ravenclaw that Mandy could say she wasn't entirely uncomfortable around. She supposed it was the occasional outings with Roger in which she came across Melinda, but somehow they managed to get on.

"It has, hasn't it?" Morag said with a smile as she took another sip. "I can't say there's been all that much excitement. The usual drowning myself in my work bit. Yourself?"

Melinda had always enjoyed Ravenclaws. They were far more predictable than Slytherins and in that she felt more at ease around them. Plus who could really deny themselves the possibility of intelligent conversation? She much preferred Ravenclaws among her employees as well as her friends.

"Stunningly, our time has been spent very similarly." she mused, looking at the exhibit for a moment. The museum certainly did know how to put them together. "I'm fairly sure that I hear at least once a week that I work too much."
