About: | Draughmour Castle: A History Draughmour Castle Hotel is a 14th Century castle nestling in the Northumbrian valley of the South Tyne. Built in 1350, during the reign of Edward III, the castle has retained its architectural integrity and is regarded as one of the few medieval fortified Castle Hotels in England. The guestrooms are individually unique all with private facilities, some with four-poster beds, sauna and spa bath. Set in its own ten-acre woodland estate, the castle's 7 feet thick walls provide a peaceful and tranquil refuge in which to escape from today's hustle and bustle to a bygone age. In 1878, the castle was passed on to the only living heir to the estate and its fortune, Lord Alistair Draughmour and his wife Lady Bethany. He was a quite good friend with the American millionaire, George Bentham. And when his youngest child, a daughter named Sara who married a New York lawyer, Lord Draughmour offered his home as a place to stay for the newlyweds. The aging British couple welcomed the younger couple with open arms for they had naught children of their own. When Sara was mysteriously raped and murdered during their stay, and the murderer was never caught, Lord Draughmour’s friendship with George Bentham ceased and the old British man fell into a depression. He died several years later, followed by his wife. After the death of Lord and Lady Draughmour, and with no heirs to their fortune and castle, the estate became vacant. Caretakers would come to the house to take care of it, but none liked to stay near it after dark. One such caretaker from the 1930s claimed to see lights on in the tower windows as well as other random windows when it was certain that no one was there. Local townspeople rumored that it was haunted and that’s when a Scottish millionaire purchased the castle and fixed it up, deciding to turn it into a hotel and play up on its popularity and urban legends. When the castle-hotel opened its doors in 1950, people began to flock to stay in such a lovely place. Sometimes, people would leave and never return, sometimes they would frequent…sometimes they had no choice and had to stay…because they too have died within the castle’s confines. Guests and even staff, from time to time, have claimed to feel a sudden cold draft, humming of a sad but pretty song, whispering of voices that belong to unseen bodies, and the sound of light footsteps. But all that is bound to change… | ||||||||||
