Week Ten: Friday
Who: Chris and Hesper (with a brief appearance by Chris' nemesis, Vernon Johnson)
Where: beginning outside UW Medical Center, then a nearby diner
When: early morning, just after dawn
What: breakfast

It was peculiar enough to be standing outside the hospital after work instead of heading home to sleep after a long night spent restocking supplies and filing and attempting to avoid people. It was also very unusual why he was standing out there. He was waiting for Hesper Alekos, who'd pushed a note beneath his door the day before telling him she was taking him to breakfast today in thanks for the sketch he'd left for her, and that she'd pick him up outside the hospital. There'd been no option for declining, and at this point he probably wouldn't have, anyway. After the rocky start to their last encounter where she'd found him up in the enclosed gardens, she'd seemed to go out of her way to be nice to him, charming even. That had possibly been one of the reasons he'd matted that sketch and left it for her, since it had seemed to bother her so much that he'd drawn it. One of the reasons. Any others, he wouldn't let himself examine. It was too confusing to him.

Chris wasn't even nervous about seeing her again right now because he was too busy being annoyed. The drawback to having to wait out here was the fact that Vernon Johnson, who seemed to have nothing better to do during his shifts at work than to hunt down Chris and taunt him, had spotted him through the glass doors outside which he stood in the brisk morning air. Chris had changed out of the scrubs he'd worn to work in, something he usually didn't do, since normally he was just going home and who cared what he had on? Despite the fact that he and Hesper would undoubtedly go to the Diner several blocks away, which, though it had excellent breakfasts, was nothing fancy, he'd felt compelled to put something else on, anyway. He was dressed in black jeans and a fisherman's sweater in a deep blue with a white t-shirt beneath it that just barely peeked out from beneath the sweater's crew neck. The color intensified the shade of his eyes, and maybe he'd noticed the effect when he'd looked in the mirror, although that sort of thing wasn't anything Chris generally considered.

He'd been standing still, minding his own business as he usually did, when Vernon burst out of the doors like a demented jack-in-the-box to stand beside him. The burly black man was still dressed in his work scrubs, bulging out of them actually, and he'd tossed a nearly threadbare coat on over them against the chill. "Yo," he said, his big white teeth showing as he smiled joyously. "Whatchoo doin' out here, Morgan? Ain't it time for mice to get back in their holes?" He poked Chris on the arm, having already figured out long ago how much Chris hated to be touched.

Anger flared instantly, and Chris turned his head to glare at the guy, deliberately stepping a foot to one side. He wished for Hesper's claws; though he hadn't seen them anywhere but in his mind's eye, he knew they were there. He was reaching the point with Vernon where he'd love to fight back, but there wasn't a lot he could do. The other man was bigger than him and brasher, loud and obnoxious. He'd likely been the sort of little kid who'd pulled the wings off of butterflies. He seemed to have no human kindness or sense of appropriateness. Chris said nothing, but his jaw tightened as he hoped the other man would give up and go away.

"You lookin' fiiiiiine, baby," Vernon said. "Got a date? Or you takin' up pros-ti-tu-tion?" Every syllable of the last word was spoken as if it had been a separate word, with a definite mocking flavor. He closed the space between them and started to rub Chris' arm, as if assessing the quality of the wool on his sweater. Chris' cheeks were blazing red, though he was more angry than embarrassed at the moment, as little as he liked another man touching him like that here in public. He wouldn't have liked it anywhere, but here was worse, outside his workplace. His dark brows drawn down in a glower, he yanked his arm out of Vernon's grasp and then elbowed the man as hard as he could, as little as he liked to stoop to his level. He just couldn't tolerate it anymore.

Thank yous were not normally in Hesper's bag of tricks. When they were, often times they were not of the gift basket variety. Though she was a fan of gift baskets, especially if she was the one getting one. Still she had to find some way to thank Chris for the lovely picture that she now had to keep hidden from her brother. Lucky for her Nox never really went in her drawers, but there was still always a chance of him unearthing something that he should not and that was definitely something that was best left out of his sight. Though even with the picture, it was not something she normally thanked people for. Why should she thank them? It was not like she asked for it.

But there was another motivation. His power could have infinite benefits to someone such as herself. Think about it, she would know intimate details that no one else could possibly know. But in order to tap into his power, she needed him to trust her. Eventually she hoped to bring him almost to the level of assistant or something like that. It was something that would be unavoidable really. With his power she could learn an awful lot, but only if he was willing to tell her. It would take a lot of work, but she wanted him at that level where he would tell her willingly, knowing and understanding why he was telling her. A situation like that was a long ways off right now though.

Walking down to the hospital, she shivered a bit. Was it even not too cold for her liking in Seattle? Still, she thought she looked rather nice in her jacket and jeans. While her style was no where near that of the prissy girls that seemed to propagate in the mud of the city, she was still rather attractive. Plus, practical shoes went well with jeans, and when one was trying to get some place as quick as possible, practical always worked best. She made it to the hospital soon enough, only to be very surprised at what she saw. Well look at that, little Chris was fighting back. And didn't his odds just look terrible?

Slipping up as fast as she could upon seeing that, she managed to pull Chris away and slide between the two of them. Neither of them would have a chance if she really wanted a fight, and Chris was easily light enough to probably bench press, so pulling was no big feat. Despite his dislike of touch, Hesper felt it was needed to make a point. Sliding an arm around his, she kissed his cheek lightly. "Babe, you been waiting long? Sorry I took so long." she said sweetly, looking over at Vernon with a raised, cynical eyebrow. "Though, looks like your friend was nice enough to keep you busy."

Normally, Chris thought out all the possibilities before he engaged in any given action. Sometimes he was too careful, because none of the potential consequences seemed to be good. There were a few people in life who seemed to short-circuit that response, and one of them was Vernon Johnson. When he'd elbowed the man, he fully expected to be punched or have his arm twisted nearly out of socket, or something else equally heinous. In this case, though, he didn't care. Any amount of pain would have been worth stopping the big jerk from pawing him about here on the sidewalk, just to be obnoxious.

Hesper's appearance was almost like divine intervention. Well, intervention anyway. Chris was a bit surprised how glad he was to see her. If nothing else, he didn't think Vernon would try to pound him with a lady present. A woman. Under the circumstances, he was fine with her drawing him away from the other man and even kissing his cheek, though normally it would have made him flush ten different shades of red and twitch. Right now, it was just perfect.

"Not long," he said to her, his own arm sliding around her; the sleeve of the sweater had fallen over his hand, and he surreptitiously closed his fingers around it to keep his skin from touching her jacket. Last thing he needed right now was a psychometric spell. "It's okay." He looked at her because he didn't want to look at Vernon, and it was only then that he flushed very slightly, probably the effects of meeting her gaze. Her sharp eyes missed nothing, and he was sure she'd realized that Vernon the musclebound lunkhead was no friend of his.

"It wadn't nothin'," Vernon said, insinuating himself into the conversation again. There was confusion on his face; the sight of a woman coming to pick up Chris had completely thrown him off. He'd figured the kid was gay, because he was damned pretty, wasn't he?

Really she wouldn't have minded if Vernon had thrown a punch. She liked beating up people, and that would have given her a real reason to. While it might have been a bit emasculating for Chris, she really could not bring herself to care about that. A good fight was a good fight, though she doubted this fellow would be much of anything really. Probably get scared off as soon as he was pinned. Men did get so funny when a woman turned out to be stronger than they anticipated.

When he turned red from looking at her, she could not help smirking just the tiniest bit. Really, it was just the tiniest bit cute how bashful he was. Though it was not something she really understood. Being bashful was not anything she could really remember, in fact she doubted if she ever was. Plus with the people she preferred spending time with, blushing was not a very useful trait to have. The temptation to make him even more blushy was just too much for a girl like her to resist.

Leaning in before he could do anything, she kissed him lightly before pulling back to give him a smile. "Well I'm sorry that I made you wait at all." she said demurely. She could come off as sweet if she wanted to after all. Looking back over at the large lump of a person still standing there, she simply put on the sweetest smile she could manage. "I hope you don't mind, but he did promise to take me to breakfast this morning." she added, for the lump's benefit.

A fight was one way Chris could have seen this going. Vernon was always spoiling for one, bully that he was, and he couldn't see Hesper backing down from any sort of challenge. If it had happened, though, it would have made him cringe in every fiber of his being because of the public nature of where they were and his dislike for conflict. It didn't look as if things were going to go that way, and he was glad.

He was actually very much distracted from Vernon at the sight of Hesper smiling at him. It was a softer expression than he'd seen from her thus far, no snideness or malice in it. He should have known that look meant trouble for him, but he was too focused on his closeness to her, something that was unusual for him with anyone. He knew it was just to tweak Vernon, but still he wasn't absolutely hating it. Normally when anyone got that close, it made his skin crawl.

And in the next second, she tilted her face up to kiss his mouth, effectively rendering Chris speechless. Okay, yeah, he'd been kissed before, and this was nearly as chaste a kiss as those he'd shared with Violette. It was part of the show they were putting on here, and he knew that. Still, it sent a little spark of electricity along his spine. He just stared at her afterward, trying not to look too dumb, because Vernon was watching.

"Aight, dudes," Vernon mumbled, his eyebrows lifting. What the hell was going on in the world when a pansy like Morgan could scoop up a fine-ass older babe like that? he wondered. Shee-yit. "Peace." Shaking his head, he lumbered off back into the hospital to hunt down his ride.

Hesper was actually a bit disappointed when the lump just walked off. Still, it would mean less problems for Chris, and she was fairly certain that the lump would now be talking about the girl he had seen Chris with. His next shift at work would probably go a lot easier. Though it still would have been fun to put the lump through the wall. Well not completely through it, she was not a super hero after all.

"Well, that was certainly entertaining." she drawled, letting go of Chris and running a hand through her hair. Looking at him, she smirked slightly. "Was he in the middle of trying to hit on you or trying to fight you, cause I really couldn't tell. Because if it was the first one, I'm making fun of you throughout breakfast." Really it was a funny idea. Poor little Chris being molested by a giant bear. He might not think it was all that funny, but Hesper found it hilarious.

Motioning at him, she started walking towards the diner down the street. She could take him somewhere fancy, it was not like she did not have the money to do that, but she figured he would be more comfortable at some little hole in the wall. Plus it was near the hospital, so it was near his comfort zone. "So, babe, how was your shift then? You often get molested by the great black bear?"

Entertaining. Yeah. That wouldn't have been quite how Chris would have put it. He had the feeling she might've found it more entertaining if there'd been a fistfight, but it was better for his nerves that there hadn't been. Of course, the incident had certainly helped him calm down, in a way. He wasn't stammering around the way he usually did when he talked to Hesper.

The idea of Vernon hitting on him was appalling, and when she said that, Chris' face reflected his horror at the thought. "No!" he said immediately. "Not that. He just hates me. Always tryin' to stir me up, get a reaction." It was probably the most words he'd ever strung together in her presence without stuttering.

Chris sneaked a glance at her as they walked, flushing a little when she called him babe. He really needed to get out of that habit; he had fair skin that made every changing tint of color very obvious. "It was fine," he said, stuffing his hands in his pockets as was his habit, so deeply ingrained he didn't realize he'd done it. "He must've been busy, 'cause I didn't see him until a few minutes ago." That might've been the reason Vernon had actually come outside to seek him out, since he hadn't gotten to torment him during their shift. Asshole.

Of course a good little kid like Chris would not be entertained by the same things Hesper was. Well, at the moment he would not be. However she was keen on making him her new project and helper, which meant he was simply going to have to at the very least get used to it. His power was much to valuable for her to simply disregard. Others in her field would kill for help that he could provide.

"Right, sure it was." she said with a snicker. It looked like to her that the lady did protest too much. Still, she had only seen that one interaction, but the bear had seemed awful touchy when she had walked up. "Stir you up is a word for it." she added, under her breath.

It was funny when he blushed, but he really did do it much too often. His cheeks needed to grow up and stop doing that. Especially if she was going to get out of him what she wanted. "Well wasn't that lucky for you. You want me to start stopping by more often to give his mind something more to chew over?" She really wouldn't mind it, especially if she could tease actually kisses out of Chris. He was a nice enough looking boy, and it would be funny as hell after the bear left to see him freak out.

Chris, of course, had no idea about Hesper's intentions. That was a good thing, because knowing what she was about would have made him so nervous that he might not have been able to function. He was naive about people and about what they might want from him, even while he was suspicious about their motives. He wasn't sure why Hesper would really want to be around him, but he wasn't sure that asking her would be the way to go. Maybe it'd be okay. She seemed... nice, lately.

He hadn't completely discarded the idea of trying to find out what was going on by touching her, but he was still tossing that around in the back of his mind. One thing at a time.

"You're not funny," he mumbled at what she'd said about Vernon. It had never occurred to him that the guy might be... hitting on him, or interested in him, and the idea filled him with both loathing and horror. Not that he had anything against alternative people, but Vernon disgusted him on so many levels that the possibility of him being gay, too, wasn't even fathomable.

Chris glanced over at Hesper as they walked when she suggested coming by his workplace again. It certainly wouldn't hurt for him to be seen with a good-looking woman. That was normal, that was what people did. Of course, he wasn't really normal, he guessed, but it was nice to pretend. "If you wanted to," he said softly, his eyes sliding away from her to face front again. "You prob'ly have a lot of stuff to do." He didn't want her to feel obligated, though on the other hand she didn't seem like the type who'd offer to do something she didn't want to. Not at all.

Really she did not get why all these people thought she wasn't nice. She really was, especially if it got her something she wanted. Not like anyone ever did anything just out of the pure goodness of their hearts anyway, so why should she? Plus people on her side of things seemed to think she was just peachy to get along with. Though people did seem to have an issue with a lot of her friends.

"Oh I'm very funny." she said with a smile. Suer it probably wasn't completely true, but it might be a little true. Plus it would bother and bother Chris, and he probably wouldn't look at that big bear the same way again, which was just all too fun to be the cause of. "Better start wearing a chastity belt. Though he's got proof now that you're not interested in his manlovin."

Hesper smirked at him as he darted around the question. Rolling her eyes, she hit him in the arm lightly, since he was just a weak little human, and shook her head. "Now don't be like that. Say 'Oh Hesper, that'd just be lovely.' Only be less girly about it, please and thank you. You might even get another kiss if I decide to do it again." she added with a playful laugh. This was fun, she should make shy human friends more often.

If Hesper didn't get it, Chris would have liked to have shown her a video of their first encounter, if one had existed. His first impression of her hadn't been nice even though she'd essentially helped him home. He'd gotten the strong idea that she'd had reasons of her own for what she'd done. Not that that mattered now. He thought he'd actually softened his opinion of her... or maybe it was just that he was kind of fascinated with her, and he wasn't even sure why. It was something about her.

Chris was still appalled, but he couldn't help but laugh when she started going on about chastity belts and Vernon and his manlovin, as she put it. "One, chastity belts aren't for guys-" He was reasonably sure of that. "-and two, can you quit? I'm n-not gonna want breakfast." The thought of being with another guy repelled him personally, and times that a million if it was Vernon Johnson.

When she smacked his arm, he glanced up at her, trying to process her words and then decide if she was serious. It was hard for him to tell with her. He certainly hadn't hated it when she'd kissed him. She had to be messing with him though. Had to be. He floundered in indecision for a few seconds, then cleared his throat. "I'd like you t-to come by again," he said, and even as the words emerged, he decided he really wouldn't mind it. Hell, he was doing terrific today, for him. He'd even managed to meet her eyes as he said it.

Really, if Chris thought their first encounter was all that bad, he better hope that someone never put a hit out on him. She had been infinitely nicer to him than any of her targets, or anyone who just happened to be in the mood to piss her off. Hell, she was not human, so there was none of that 'humanity' that people could rag her about. Though Nox seemed to have some of that somewhere, and she was the odd one out in her family.

"You can get chastity belts for the menfolk, sweetheart." she said cheerfully. And if they couldn't, she was sure she could figure one out. That would certainly be a fun project. But really he was much too attractive to be keeping it in his pants anyway. "And I can understand your stomach being a little ick at that. Sure a hot guy's one thing, but your bear wasn't exactly top shelf material."

Hesper looked at him, clearly amused when he stumbled that out. "What was that you just said?" she teased, leaning in closer and putting a hand to her ear. "I couldn't quite hear it. Was that a 'Yes Hesper, I'd love you to keep pretending your my girlfriend'? Cause it sounded awful like it." They were getting closer to the diner and she was just having too much fun. It was a good start to the day, really.

Maybe Chris was starting to get used to her. She liked getting her way, and she liked to tease, but Hesper didn't intimidate him as much as she had at first. It took him a while to get used to people anyway, to feel reasonably comfortable around them anyway. He'd even been like that with his aunt when he'd first moved here. He could be odd, awkward, standoffish... but once he'd settled into a situation, he could chill out.

"I never heard of that," Chris said doubtfully when she brought up chastity belts for men. Of course, just because he hadn't heard of it didn't mean it didn't exist, but it seemed strange to him. Maybe she was messing with him again. That seemed to be something she enjoyed, after all. He shuddered at her calling Vernon your bear, and he was on the verge of asking why she was using the word bear for the guy. He even opened his mouth to ask and then closed it again, figuring it might be something he'd rather not know, some obscure sexual term. "Not my anything," he argued again, looking a little bit pouty.

Chris was blushing again, and he wished for one of those dark complexions that wouldn't show it. Ah well, wish in one hand, piss in the other and see which one gets filled up first, as his brother'd used to say in his typical vulgar fashion. He didn't mind this line of teasing anywhere near as much as the one about Vernon, though, and he was actually smirking a little as he said, "Quit. Y-you heard what I said." He even poked her with one elbow, knowing he was probably setting himself up for some sort of retribution but not really caring. She seemed to be in a terrific mood now, so maybe he could get by with it.

It was likely that he was getting used to her. Building up a tolerance, like one would to a drug. He obviously did not have much experience with strong personalities, that was for sure. Which was weird, considering he worked in a hospital and all. People were normally at their worst when they were in hospitals. But if he was getting used to her, that was good. It meant that she did not have to be nearly as nice. She thought of it as building up more of his tolerance.

"That's because you don't need one." she said with a smirk. The boy was almost his own chastity belt with how stuttery he got. She was messing with him a bit, but only just a bit. It was no wonder he got picked on, he made himself an easy target. At least Nox, though a nice guy, was not the easiest of targets. This kid on the other hand, he would scream to get beaten up if it was not for the fact that he was so cute.

Hesper tapped her chin in a play thoughtful manner. "I dunno, you might have said 'Oh shit, will that mean you'll kiss me again'. But I can't really be sure." she said with a laugh, looking at him before pushing the door open to the diner and going to sit down. A waitress would be by soon enough after all.

Chris was fortunate in his job that he did not have to actually interact with people much. He spent his time either in the basement file room, where the only person he usually had to worry about was Vernon coming around to annoy him, or stocking closets with supplies. It was a perfect vocation for someone as reclusive as he could be, and while he couldn't actually say he enjoyed it, he found it acceptable. And considering the way he'd kept to himself when he could for most of his life, it was true that he didn't have experience with strong personalities. At all.

"I don't?" Chris said before he could think better of it. He cut his eyes away from her then, thinking of how heartily she'd probably laugh at him if she knew he was a virgin. Okay, yes, it was peculiar at his advanced age of twenty-five, considering he hadn't abstained for religious reasons or anything like that. The thought of being close enough to anyone to do that just made him skittish. That was all.

The word kiss had his cheeks flushing again, but luckily she'd turned to go into the diner. Chris followed her, a rueful smile on his face. What was wrong with him, and would he ever get over it? Did he want to? He slid into the opposite side of the booth she'd selected, instinctively grasping the cuffs of his sweater loosely in his hands to prevent his bare hands from touching the surface of the table. Anyone could have been sitting there, and there was no telling what kind of impressions he could pick up.

If Chris had had any other job, Hesper was not sure he'd survive. A hospital was sterile, much of the actual equipment was disposed of after one use. It was easily the safest place for him. Outside of working in a sauna, then all he would have is naked people. But she was not sure he would deal with nakedness very well. He probably would end up having a seizure or something. He definitely would not be able to take her job. Surprisingly you had to be a people person to be an assassin, it made things a lot easier.

Hesper looked at him sadly, pouting at him cutely. "I'm going to be nice and not comment on that." she said, patting his shoulder playfully. It would not surprise her at all if the kid was a virgin. He had a hard enough time dealing with people as it was. Sure she was a pretty strong personality, but considering his issues with touch in general, it sort of spelled things out for the boy. Would be fun to break him of that, at the very least.

Sitting down, she smiled over at him, looking over and smiling at the waitress that came over. "Hey there, how about you get us two coffees to start off with? Don't need him falling asleep on me now." she joked, opening the menu as the waitress wrote that down but looked over at Chris to see if he was going to say anything.

Chris' only other job had been as a dishwasher at a family restaurant in the backwater of Cajun territory, and it had required even less people contact than his present one did. Someone with a different type of personality- or someone without psychometry to contend with- might've sought out a job where they could have built up their people skills and worked on their shyness problem, but not Chris. He was fine with avoidance, considering that he was an introvert and had no desire to spend scads of time around other people.

Having a few friends might be nice, though, and maybe that was why he was making an effort to warm up to Hesper. She seemed to like him for some reason (it wouldn't have occurred to him that she might want to utilize his powers to her own ends), so why shouldn't he try? She was interesting. "Thank you," he said when she told him she was going to be nice and not comment, and he even managed to not flinch when she patted his shoulder. It wouldn't provoke images for him, so he could deal with it.

Chris darted a shy glance at the waitress, but he managed to smile, an uptilt of his lips that was more because it was expected rather than because he felt any genuine humor. "Yes, coffee, please," he said, nodding to her. Then he opened his own menu, thinking that pancakes sounded nice. He didn't like to eat anything overly greasy or spicy when he was going to be going home and getting his 'night's' sleep after this.

His shyness was completely explainable. But that did not mean that she could not poke giant holes through his barrier of shyness because she thought that it would be fun. There was no point in just letting a perfectly set up game go to waste. And Hesper was not wasteful, no matter how spoiled she got. Why waste what you could use? There was no point to that.

It was enjoying that he was going along with it too. The poor guy probably was not used to all this attention, let alone someone like her. She did like him, the fact that he was useful just made him even more interesting. There were other nice things about him too, and nice friends made Nox happy. Which kept him off her case. "Don't thank me, you'll just tempt me to be mean." she replied with a laugh, shaking her head. Strange boy, really, and not even just because of the visions from touch.

The waitress went off and Hesper looked over the options in the menu. "So, you eaten here before?" she asked, looking over the top of her menu before looking back down. She wanted bacon, and lots of it. Or maybe ham. Meat in general sounded nice. And cooked up baby chickens, that sounded good too. With lots of ketchup. And potatoes. Mmmm.

It was the absolute truth that Chris wasn't used to getting attention. He usually actively avoided it, and if he did garner any notice, he was quick to assume it was for negative reasons. He'd been the one to seek out Violette, although it had taken him ages to work up the nerve to actually speak to her, and she'd been so shy and sweet and almost otherworldly that he considered that an entirely different kind of situation.

"I'm polite," Chris argued mildly. "I thank people for stuff." Well, most of the time he was. The only time he could think of that he'd been rude to her was when she'd run into him up in the gardens at the Towers, and she'd actually kind of... seemed to like it that he'd dug his heels in. That was the glimmer of an impression that he'd gotten, anyway.

"Once in a while," he said when she asked him if he'd eaten at this diner previously. Just pancakes, he'd decided. The carbs would help him settle into a soporific stupor once he'd returned home and gone to bed.

It was too bad he usually avoided attention. Hesper had her sights set on him and she always got what she wanted, no matter who she had to hurt to get it. He was lucky what she wanted from him did not really let her hurt him. Very lucky actually, because really, she did not have any qualms about it. She was pushy enough to pursue him to get what she wanted at the very least.

"Right, so that's what they call it." she said with a wicked grin. Really, when he had stood up for himself, it had been a bit hot. He had power to him, if he really wanted to use it. There were people she knew that would kill for his power. He could gather knowledge on people that could make him extremely powerful. It did not seem he was all that interested in that path though.

Nodding, she smiled as the waitress brought their coffee. First thing to do now, pile as much sugar into that cup as physically possible. "I'll have the meat lovers omelet with hashbrowns and bacon." she said as she added packet after packet of sugar to her coffee.

Really, it took a pushy person to get anywhere with Chris. The average person gave up before they'd gotten very far, whether their intention was merely friendship or otherwise. He was too skittish, too reserved, too difficult. Most of the time, he'd never tried to be any different, and it intrigued him that she didn't seem put off by that.

"Yes, that's what they call it," he said, a tiny smile quirking his lips upward. He'd settled into a reasonable comfort level, as evidenced by the fact that he'd stopped stuttering. Unfortunately for him, he'd never seen his abilities as anything positive. They kept him shut off from most people, made him frightened and wary of accidentally touching things; he dreaded both the images and the sickening blood sugar drop that always followed. He'd never looked at it as an advantage, ever.

"Thank you," Chris said to the waitress when she put his cup down, looking askance at Hesper as she dumped a load of sugar into hers. Apparently, she enjoyed coffee with her sugar. "I'll, uh, have the pancakes," he said. "Please."

If it took a pushy person to get somewhere with him, then Hesper would definitely get somewhere, because there were few people pushier than her. It had been what had set her apart in her family, it had been what made her survive in hell. If him being different was supposed to be what put her off, then he had obviously never been around anyone interesting in his life.

She did notice that he was not stuttering anymore. Which was a relief, it really was a bit frustrating. And he was smiling, it meant she was getting somewhere, even better. She liked when she was getting somewhere, even if he was slower than most. "Funny, where I come from no one's ever heard of it." she replied with a smile, taking a sip of her sugared up coffee.

Watching the waitress leave, she looked back over at him. "So, that was a nice picture you slipped under my door. But honestly, if you really wanted me to model for you, all you had to do was ask." Giving a wink to him, she took another sip.

Chris had hidden from people all his life, really. His family had been accustomed to him and how peculiarly he could behave sometimes, and others he could avoid. He'd spent countless hours in the swamps, either just enjoying the lack of other people or sketching; he had at least three thick sketchbooks completely filled with his impressions of swamp life. It seemed so simple to him, much simpler than actual living in a busy world was.

Where had she come from, he wondered, where politeness was unheard of? He was on the verge of asking, but then he decided not to, because who knew what she might tell him. From where would somebody who had wings and claws in their natural form originate? He just smiled and sipped his own coffee, which he'd sugared lightly in comparison to hers.

Chris had been doing very well, but her saucy words and her wink undid him again. His cheeks colored when she told him all he had to do was ask if he wanted her to model. Because something about her tone was almost... suggestive. "I, um..." he began, tucking his sleeve-covered hands beneath the edge of the table. "I wasn't thinking of... I mean--."

Great. Way to go. How old're you, twelve? He took a breath and tried again. "I gave it to you 'cause you seemed angry that I drew it."

Really if one put everything together it was not all that hard to figure out where she came from. Or at least that was her opinion. Then again most people didn't really believe in hell, not really. It was a sort of vague notion in their heads, not a real place where there were actual demons. Well, guess they were just a tad bit wrong about that. Was pretty funny, actually.

"Well of course I was angry." she said, raising an eyebrow at him as she took a sip of her coffee. Setting it down, she looked at him almost seriously for a moment. Or at least as serious as she was really able to get right now. "I never show anyone those parts of me. Be like someone looking in the window when you shower. Though it's worse than that, cause really that could lead to an interesting conversation at least if you catch the idiot."

Leaning back against the booth, she gave him a wicked grin. "Wasn't lying about the modeling thing though. Would be fun! Not like I've got a lot going on anyway." It would be fun, and everyone knew what models did with their artists, really. The kid could use some shaking up anyway. He was wrapped much too tight for it to be good for him. Even Nox was more relaxed, and that was saying something.

Hell had always been an abstract concept to Chris, whose own version of it seemed to be living in a fast-paced world and being forced to see things that horrified him, all the time. There was some existentialist playwright who'd come up with the phrase Hell is other people, and Chris was totally down with that. It was probably fortunate that he hadn't asked and Hesper hadn't told him specifically where she was from.

There was really no point in going over again how Chris hadn't meant for her to see the drawing and how he hadn't really seen her like that except for in his mind's eye. They'd covered that already, and Hesper didn't seem the type who'd want to revisit something they'd already discussed. It didn't seem to him that she liked wasting time with anything. Which kind of made him wonder what she was doing here with him, but anyway.

Her grin reached into him and twisted his insides into knots when she said she wasn't lying about modeling. He glanced down and then back up at her again, trying not to blush. It was her tone and her expression that was getting to him. He'd had Amity model for him before, though there'd been nothing the least bit salacious about it, because she was his best friend. He'd always found her attractive in an unconventional way, and he'd wanted to try to capture that on paper. That was all it had been.

He'd heard about artists and their models though; he might've been sheltered, but he hadn't grown up under a rock. Pretend she didn't mean what you think she did. You're good at pretending, right? "I should draw you in a halo and angel wings," he mumbled, trying to make the tiniest joke. Oh, wait, on the other hand maybe that wasn't the best thought. How about those Victoria's Secret chicks who walked the catwalk dressed up like angels? Angels weren't supposed to be sexy, Chris didn't think, but those definitely were.

Hell wasn't other people. People were so much fun. Like 6 billion playthings in a giant playground. She loved people, didn't see how anyone couldn't. Then with his gift she guessed it was a little understandable. Still, she would be using it to find out all the dirt she could. And she would be, given enough time. Hesper always got what she wanted, always.

They had covered it, but that did not mean it was less upsetting. That was something very private and she had worked rather hard to keep it private. Still, now that he knew she could not change that short of killing him. So instead she'd go for something that was a lot more fun in her mind, his loyalty. Loyalty was a funny thing really, couldn't betray someone you wanted to protect after all. And she was going to use that to the fullest if she could manage. He was too pretty to kill.

Hesper's grin turned predatory when she saw that little display of color on his face. "Now what could possibly be going in that cute little head of yours?" she nearly purred out. Not that he would be able to defend himself well enough against her normally, but he was definitely tired. It would give her even more of an edge against him. Or for him really, she was doing the boy a favor in her head.

Chris had always found people to be difficult and undependable and unpredictable. Even his best friend had dropped off the radar; he had no idea how to get hold of her now, and apparently she hadn't tried to find him. His mother would have let him know if she'd heard from Amity. Chris himself tried to go through life making as few waves as possible, but he knew that he was an exception to the rule. He wouldn't have been surprised to know what Hesper's view of people happened to be; she struck him as supremely confident, all the time.

Chris would never use what he knew about Hesper against her, though of course she didn't know that. Most people would think he'd lost his mind, anyway, if he started going on about a woman who had wings and claws... but you couldn't see them because she cloaked them somehow. He could only imagine how that would go over. Who would he tell, and why? Making trouble for others wasn't something he could really conceptualize, possibly because he spent so much time trying not to draw attention to himself. He couldn't hide that well if he was pointing the finger at another person, could he?

Oh, she was evil, and it had nothing to do with any supernatural attributes she possessed, Chris thought as she tried to pry out what he was blushing about. She seemed to know that he was having inappropriate thoughts. "N-nothin' we can talk about at the table," he mumbled, trying to put her off. He was a guy, and he had all the ordinary urges and drives, though he usually didn't have enough contact with anyone to have inappropriate thoughts about them. Well, beyond the abstract sort of thoughts that any guy entertained on occasion.

He was thrilled to see the waitress approaching their table with plates of food, and he thanked her quietly when she set his plate in front of him. Maybe that would get Hesper off the subject and make her stop tormenting him.
