Week Ten: Tuesday, April 8th
Who: Nox and Hesper
When: Tuesday night, sometime after 10:00
Where: their apartment

Nox was feeling somewhat drowsy. He'd had a busy day, and the previous night was a mentally taxing one. It had taken a lot of patience to explain things to Alex, but in the end it all paid off. Alex didn't fear that Nox would rip his head off and drink from a blood pool. At least he didn't seem as though he feared it. By the time they'd finished talking, they were joking once again and making plans to build a car together. All in all, it had been a successful revelation of a very big secret.

It had never been the plan to let Alex in on Nox's supernatural side, but Nox didn't see another viable option. He wanted to help in the situation involving Serena and Kayden, and Nox didn't know how else to make Alex see that his sister wasn't crazy. Besides, Alex was a good guy, and Nox had solid instincts. He felt he could trust his new friend with such information.

Hopefully Hesper would agree, since in revealing himself, Nox had outed her as well. Hale's secret was out there too, but Nox was confident Hale would trust his judgement, especially since Alex seemed to be ok with it all, at least where Nox was concerned. Alex wasn't fond of Kayden being a vampire, and it worried Nox as well, but hopefully after some investigating, Nox would find out that Kayden was a man worthy of Serena.

Hesper didn't give any indication of when she'd be home, just said 'tonight'. Usually that meant she'd arrive just in time for dinner, or just as Nox was headed to bed. Well, dinner came and went, with leftovers ending up in the fridge for her whenever she decided to munch on them, and Nox's eyelids were starting to feel heavy as he read, legs stretched out across the length of the couch. In fact, his eyes were just about close for the count when he heard keys in the door.

She had not really been expecting a text from her brother. At the very least she had not been expecting one on a subject like that. Normally they consisted of him yelling at her, asking where she was, telling her that he was making her worried sick, yada yada yada. But this time it had been completely different. And woah had there been a punchline. In fact she was still not sure if he had been lying or not, even if lying was not really the Nox thing to do.

Last she had checked revealing what they were was solidly in the no pile of things to do. While so normally had no regard for what her brother said, it was a rule that she found useful enough in every day life. And now he had gone off and told some guy that she did not even know? Honestly, she was allowed to be that inconsiderate, but she expected better from Nox. Much better in fact. Last she checked it was his job to be the responsible one.

She had been in the middle of a job, but luckily it was not something all that far away or all that dire. Given tat, she did not rush to get home. It was not like something would happen in the next few hours, Nox was not that stupid. So when she finally did get back to the towers it was late out and she half expected her brother to be in bed, if not getting ready for it. He did go to bed so early on his day off after all.

Unlocking the door and entering the apartment, Hesper looked around. "Nox, where are you?" she asked, frowning. "You've for once got some explaining to do." Heading into view of the couch she walked in front of it and stood over him, hands on her hips. "Wake up sleepy head, mommy's home." she drawled, raising an eyebrow at him.

Nox closed his book and let it rest in his lap, drawing his knees up to make space on the sofa for her to sit. "Join me, and I'll tell ya all about it."

He could tell by the look on her face that she wasn't happy with him. He half expected that, because this was the sort of decision they should have made together. Still, how many times had she been stupid and careless and nearly gotten him in trouble as a result? So he figured he deserved to screw up at least once.

"Don't give me that look. Everything is fine. He's not gonna run off and blab to, well, the authorities. I am the authorities!" he said, sorta trying to defend himself, but not doing a great job.

"I had to tell him. Serena was formerly engaged to a vampire, who everyone thought was dead... though only she knew he was a vampire, apparently." This was already getting confusing. "Anyway, the guy is back, living here in the Towers, so she told Alex about it. He texted me, asking to meet up and talk. He thought she had gone insane, and frankly, I think he was close to asking me to have her committed. So, I showed him my wings."

Sitting down with a huff, she folded her arms sulking and looked at him. It didn't matter how many times she screwed up, she was the one allowed to screw up. On the other hand Nox wasn't the kind of person to just go off and do these kinds of things. He had better have a good reason.

"You didn't have to tell him anything." she retorted lightly. "Doesn't matter to use if his sister's off with some vampire." Hesper had a low opinion of the race of vampires. It was not through any bad experience really, and she did not mind working with them to some extent, and hell she did live in a building run by them. But for some reason the race just rubbed her the wrong way.

"Wait, wait a second." she said, sitting up and frowning. "wasn't Serena the girl that you wanted to get with?" She seemed to recall that being the girl's name. She had never gotten around to meeting her, frankly she doubted it would get very serious, but still, there was a principle to the thing and all that.

Nox gave Hesper a look of annoyance and boredom, having heard her opinions of vampires before. "Hesper, they're supernaturals like us, don't be so biased. So what if they weren't born as they are, plenty of them are much older than you and I, and know a lot more as a result. As far as most the other supernaturals in this building are concerned, you and I are infants." It was true. Being only 42, they were quite young for their race.

Hesper's question caused Nox to shift uncomfortably, "I didn't want to get with her, I was interested in dating her. I know there's a difference in your mind, so I'm just clarifying. But she's likely still in love with him. I'd say having your fiance die would make it difficult for you to just simply move on. And it turns out he's alive after all, so I'm sure they'll be picking up where they left off."

He tried to shrug it all off. It had only been a few dates, if they even were dates, and while he enjoyed her company a great deal, there was no real emotional investment yet. "Anyway, it doesn't matter what sort of relationship I have with Serena. I was trying to help Alex. And I'm going to continue helping him. Planning on doing some background checks on this guy... Kayden. Both official and non-official research... ask around in the Underground and all that."

"Age has nothing to do with anything, and neither does being a supernatural. And I'm not biased." she grumbled. "They're just by and large a load of bastards." And they were. It was just something that had always bothered her. Like how some people always got a creeping feeling in the dark. Vampire's gave her a creeping feeling in the neck, and that had a way of putting someone on edge.

Rolling her eyes, she looked at him pointedly. "You did so want to get with her." And of course he went on about love and some shit like that. It always was love with him. No wonder he could never manage to get laid. "And if I was ever stupid enough to have a fiance in the first place, I'd be pretty ticked off that he had pretended he was dead. What kind of woman goes back to a guy who'd lie about something like that."

She was going to add that it did so, because otherwise he wouldn't be nearly as eager to give up their secret. But he would have never agreed to that logic, even if it was right. "You want me to look up on him too?" she asked, looking at her nails in an irritated manner. Being drawn into this at this pint was unavoidable, thanks to mister shows-his-wings. But she had mob connections that Nox could only have nightmares about

Nox simply rolled his eyes at Hesper. He'd never really understand her issue with vampires. Sure, there were a few bad ones out there, but that didn't make their whole race worthless. He treated them all the same until they proved themselves good or bad, Nox did that with everyone actually, even humans. All people were capable of evil. It had nothing to do with what you were, just who you were. "Whatever, Hes. Put a big iron collar around your neck or something and stop moaning about it."

Then it was Hesper's turn to roll her eyes at Nox. She gave him grief when he'd told her he was interested in Serena, and now he was taking more of it because Serena had been engaged to a vampire, leaving Nox out of luck. He couldn't win. "We don't know the circumstances. Stop judging. Maybe someone was going to rat him out, so he had to go into hiding to protect everyone involved. You don't know, neither do I. But I'm gonna find out."

Nox looked up at her suggestion, suspicious. "And just who are you planning on asking?" His sister was always so secretive about where she went when she left. She didn't talk about people she knew, only brought home a few guys that infuriated Nox. He'd been tempted to spy on her many times, but couldn't bring himself to do that, it was simply too much of an invasion, and regardless how much he wanted to protect her, he respected her.

Nox could go on all he liked on how they weren't all the same, and give everyone a chance. Last she checked, back home that kind of thinking was why they were a family that got pushed around. She did not care for that kind of mindset really, it was not practical too her. "I don't pull out the iron collar when you're home." she grumbled under her breath.

"I'll stop judging when I'm dead, Mr. Perfect." she said, frowning at him. He was the one that had gone off and revealed them and now she was the one getting lectured, again? Really she would never figure out just how his mind worked. "Circumstances don't matter. Any sane person would be incredibly distrustful and suspicious if someone just returned from the dead, vampire or not."

Hesper looked away from him and tilted her head back a bit haughtily. "There's no reason to bother you with names, but mine are just as reliable if not more so than yours." Plus, he was a cop, he really did not have the kind of connections that she had, given her line of business. And when you worked cleaning up other people's dirty secrets, they would be more likely to impart information.

"Yeah, yeah... no collar 'cause you plan on hiding behind me and letting me take the abuse should anyone attack. It's very courageous of you, Hes." She was so tough, genuinely, but Nox was fairly sure if anything ever came to blows when they were together, she wouldn't mind at all letting him throw the punches. Whether that was because she would rather avoid the conflict, or because she'd probably find amusement in seeing Nox get physical for once, he wasn't sure.

"And I am distrustful, just not to the degree of paranoia and rash actions. I'm not about to assume a vampire I've never met is a bad guy, but yeah, I think it's safe to have a little dose of suspicion. I'll check him out, see if he's clean, and if so, they can go on living a happy life together... if Alex allows it. Still not sure how I'll convince him to give Serena a break if this vampire turns out to be an ok guy. I think Alex worries... and I worry too... that there's that risk of him turning Serena. She may think she wants that, or he might think she does... but that's a hard life. I wouldn't wish it on anyone." He wasn't a huge fan of the sun when it was at its brightest, but at least Nox could go out in it. He could live a fairly normal life among humans. It was so different for vampires, and likely a difficult adjustment too, since they weren't born with such restrictions. He doubted Serena would ever choose that life if she really understood all that she was giving up. But, love had caused people to do dumber things in the past.

"I don't like that you have these people in your life. It's dangerous and stupid. You shouldn't have sources." Again, he avoiding asking her much about all of it outright. In all honesty, Nox felt he was better off not knowing some things about his sister. He wondered sometimes just what she did when she ran off, and felt he just might be inclined to arrest her if he did know. "Just don't go getting yourself into trouble checking up on him, ok?"

Nox sighed and sunk deeper into the pillows, setting his book on the coffee table as he did. "You know... I love living here, but it sure would be easier if all humans knew about us, and we could just do away with all the secrets. I hate freaking them out with the wings, but it's the only way to get through to them. They're so brainwashed by their upbringings, so ignorant to the other half of the world. It's sad really. Can you imagine growing up like that?"

"No I was thinking more sex games. Come on, do you like not have a single perverted bone in your body?" she asked, raising her eyebrow at him. Normally a comment like that would have had him yelling at her to not tell him things like that. Besides, she didn't own one made of iron, that would just be impractical and tacky. Not that she wouldn't let her brother take a hit for her though, but she worried more about his safety than he would really believe.

"Ooo, cause vampire and human relationships always end up so well." she drawled out. "Cause there isn't that whole immortality thing between them. or the whole problem of, oh, I'm fucking my food supply here." Humans and vampires were not meant to go together. It was like a wolf dating a rabbit. Did the wolf date the rabbit? No, it just ate the rabbit because the rabbit was tasty. "No reason a human should date a vampire unless they've got a death wish. I'm sorry Nox, but your pseudo girlfriend is a wee bit suicidal."

If he knew what her job was, he would not have thought it so stupid. But he did not know what she did to keep her bank account nicely padded, so it was a null argument. "You're lecturing but all i hear is blah blah blah. And I won't get in trouble. Unlike you, my sources like me cause I'm not about to arrest them." That certainly did help when it came to getting information, after all.

Hesper looked at him like he were an idiot. "No, you know what it'd be like? Like one of those fucking comic books where everyone's fighting everyone. Humans don't like differences. They already hate each other enough and there's barely any difference between them all." Nox was just so... naive about things like this.

Nox felt a sudden urge to vomit at her mention of 'sex games'. "Ok, ok, enough." He didn't want to hear another word. His mind had definitely not gone to that place. He really didn't have any sort of perversion in that sense, and he knew that irritated Hesper. Though, if he'd suddenly changed, became more like her, it just might shock her to death!

"She's not my girlfriend, Hesper! Would you drop that already?" He was really getting irritated about it. That was clearly over. He wasn't really hurt, because nothing had ever really started, so he didn't think it was necessary to linger on the topic. He also didn't like Hesper's judgmental attitude, but he knew there was nothing he could do to change her mind. Besides, even if he didn't say it, he had to agree. Humans and vampires made for a dreadful pairing. Even if the vampire never once caused harm to the human, there was something so unbalanced about it. With other supernaturals, there was at least a chance of a normal life with a human, but vampires had so much stacked against them. No children for starters, and he knew Serena wanted them.

Naive? Perhaps. But Nox preferred to think of himself as an idealist instead. "You talk about them as though they're all the same. It's not true. I've seen a great deal of differences between them over the years. Some are compassionate beyond reason, and there are the others who seem devoid of a soul." Nox rubbed his hand over his face and sighed, glancing up at her. "You really don't like them, do you?"

Hesper could not restrain the smirk when he reacted to that. She really did not want Nox to change, that would mean she would have to learn whole new ways to gross him out. And where would be the fun in that, honestly? It had taken her years to become such an expert in pissing of Nox. No one could do it better than her and she took pride in it.

"I said pseudo, didn't I?" He was so uptight about anything relating to his sad and sorry love life. Honestly, if he was not going to have one, then he should at least be good about her teasing about it. "Plus, if she's going to go for a vampire, can't say that I would have liked her." There was no such thing as a happy vampire and human. Temptation was something that just could not be pushed back forever. It was not like with someone like her and Nox and a human. They knew how it would end, there was no temptation to feed off of someone they cared about.

"You see the people that are killed every day, Nox. Sure they're not all the same, but there's enough of them that are like that." Frowning slightly she looked over at him. "Like who, specifically?"

He was a bit edgy when it came to his love life, though really only when he discussed it with Hesper. She had a way of pushing his buttons, making him so uncomfortable in his own skin. It was insanely irritating, and was a big part of the reason he avoided talking to her about such things. He'd been reluctant to tell her about Serena from the start, and now he somewhat regretted it.

"You will like her, I promise you. Meaning that you will meet her. She lives in our building, and both she and her brother are friends of mine. I expect you to meet them and make an attempt to be nice when you do." He gave her his stern glare, one she'd seen millions of times before.

"Humans in general." He knew Hesper liked being here around them, but he felt it was more because she found them amusing, not because she enjoyed their company the way he did. A lot of supernaturals had superiority complexes in the sense that they felt themselves above humans and other brands of supernaturals. He didn't think of himself as better or worse than others, simply different.

Nox needed to learn how to joke. He always played everything so close to his chest. Sure she made him feel awkward, because he had never gotten the idea in his head that maybe she did actually care what happened to him. The idea of someone playing her brother for a fool or breaking his heart made her furious. So far because of his own good guy behavior she had not really had to bother with it, but it was still something that was there.

"I'll meet the brother." she said petulantly. She was not going to agree to meet this girl. There was no reason why she should, really. If she got along with the brother, maybe she would eventually have a reason. But right now there was no motivation to meet her or play nice. "And which nice should I attempt when I meet him? I've got a few low cut shirts that might work."

Hesper actually looked at him in surprise. Tilting her head at him curiously, she shifted to watch him oddly. "I like humans. I find them more interesting than just about anything else, really. I wouldn't have stayed up here this long if I didn't like them."

Perhaps it was due to his last relationship that he wasn't able to take a joke. Not even close. In fact, having her joke about such things made his chest tighten at times as his mind took a trip back in time. He could still smell her, remember exactly the way her hair felt as it slipped through his fingers, the way her breath warmed his lips before she pressed her own to them. And he could still see her walking away. Because of this, Nox was more than willing to convince himself that Serena being in a relationship was a good thing. He wasn't ready. But he kept that to himself. He knew that Hesper loved him and wanted to protect him, so the less she knew about his feelings, the better. He didn't want her doing something stupid on his behalf. Maybe it was even for the best that she not get to know Serena.

Alex was a different story. Seemed he and Nox were getting along even better now that the truth was out there. Sure, it was probably still a little weird for Alex, but that would pass with time. They were still friends. Nox knew there was always a risk in introducing his friends to Hesper, but she was the most important person in his life, and anyone who cared for him had to put up with her. If he could do it, so could they.

"Not that nice. Just don't threaten him, ok? I know you're probably already spinning some twisted idea in your head... thinking it would be fun to scare him now that he knows and is a little on edge because of it. Don't try it, Hes. He's a nice guy, and I'd like to keep him as my friend. So, no stunts... scary or sexual. Got it?" If she slept with him, it would just make things awkward.

Nox wasn't sure he believed Hesper at first. "Then why do you talk about them the way you do? Why don't you want to get to know some of the good ones I've met... let them get to know you as well?"

Their relationship was really one built on stability and secrets. The siblings did not share all that much about themselves with each other. Then again, Hesper was not one to share much about herself in general. For the most part though it was to protect Nox. If he knew what she did, he would be in danger. But she did remember his last relationship, and she remembered her hatred of that girl. The girl did not even deserve a name in her book, let alone her brother's feelings.

"Now who said that I was going to threaten him?" she said with a pout. Well that idea was out. Why did he get all the fun of scaring humans when she did not? Right, probably cause he was doing it 'for their own good' instead of to see them scream, which would be her idea in that situation. "I'll be good, for now." she grumbled.

Hesper tilted her head back and looked down her nose at him. She shook her head for a moment. "You ever think that I have my own friends? I've got plenty of humans I like, I've plenty I get along with. I don't generally like the ones you do." He liked weak ones, and she did not have room for weak friends. She would accidentally crush them.

According to Hesper, Nox's girlfriend had been dubbed 'bitch' at birth. And no matter how many times he corrected her, 'it's Miriam,' Hesper continued to refer to the woman as 'the bitch'. Miriam and Hesper battled so much, Nox wondered sometimes if he was shortening his life in trying to promote peace. It was a battle he couldn't win, and ultimately, he'd been forced to choose. Family came first, always would, so Miriam left. But it wasn't just about Hesper, even if the fighting was a big part of it. The issue of Miriam's humanity came into question a lot too. Both worried a lot about the dynamics of their relationship in the future, and she ultimately decided it would be too difficult to stay together. She thought Nox was better off finding someone like him.

"You don't have to say it, I know the kind of stuff you'll pull. Honestly, Hesper, do you think I haven't been paying attention over the years? I'm wise to your tricks. Behave yourself around him, and I might continue to cook you meals and give you a nice place to call home. I don't want you screwing things up... especially not now that he's gonna help me build a car. You think it will make me cool?" he asked with a chuckle. Yeah, Nox was well aware that he was a bit of a dork.

"Then why won't you introduce me to these friends? They can't all be as vile as the guys you've smuggled into the house." He was sure she had to have at least one friend he'd be able to stand. "And I think you'll like Alex. Seriously."

The girl had been a bitch. It was pure and simple in Hesper's mind. The two had never gotten along, from the moment she met her to the moment the bitch had finally left. Hesper had been glad for her to go, she had caused her brother more grief than Hesper liked. Nox deserved better and he would eventually find better. Hesper was not sure where, but she knew that it would happen.

"You wouldn't kick me out and you know it." she said, nodding to herself. Sighing she shrugged and put her feet on the coffee table. "I'll be good, for now. And I'm not sure anything could make you look cool. You were kinda born a dork and I'm pretty sure that it's a life long condition."

"Because, my friends happen to have this habit of doing things that you insist are illegal." she said, looking at him pointedly. "And friendships don't last very long if your brother throws all your friends in jail." Looking down at her feet she shrugged. "We'll see if I like him."

Nox would have liked to have the sort of confidence Hesper possessed. He wasn't at all sure what the future held for him, and at the moment he was somewhat dragging his heels, unwilling to find out. But what did it matter? He had plenty of time. He wasn't ready yet. He definitely needed that extra time. Perhaps when he was ready to move on in ernest, Hesper would relax a bit and make an effort to get along with whoever he picked. Fat chance, he'd be waiting a long time for that.

"Yeah... I know. If I was gonna kick you out, I would have done so long ago. But come on, Hes, could you cut me some slack for once?" She said she'd behave, and he was going to take her word for it for the time being. Hope never hurt anyone, right?

"Ouch, that stings. It's gonna be a hot car. Surely people will look at it and think I must be equally awesome, right? Maybe you'll even agree to be seen with me in public if we're cruising in a cool car." He really didn't have any desire to be cool. Didn't matter to Nox how people viewed him, well, didn't bother him personally. But he was extremely concerned about his image where work was concerned. Anyway, he just thought it was fun to get a reaction out of Hesper, see what she thought of the idea of him driving some awesome classic car.

He shifted uncomfortably on the couch, not liking what he was hearing. "You need new friends. You should get to know Alex. He's not squeaky clean like me, but he's definitely not a hardened criminal." Nox might even be ok with the two dating, should Hesper ever figure out how to have a relationship, and if Alex behaved himself.

Nox could use a little confidence, really he could. Hesper was not sure how to help him though. The things she liked to do, what made her feel better, they just did not work for her brother. Really his best bet when it came to people would really look to Hale for sympathy and comfort there. Hesper could comfort, in a fashion, but not really in the kind of manner that Nox would need in situations like that. It all just baffled her.

"You can't kick me out anyway, you'd still be stuck back in hell if it weren't for me, mister. And I happen to know for a fact that you were quite distasteful of that idea." All she could give him was her word. She was not one to back off or cut slack, the idea just sounded preposterous to her.

"Or they'll think you're over compensating." she said, to get a dig in at him. Smiling slightly, she nudged him with her elbow. "Though you'll probably get all those little jail bait girls trying to get in your pants. Happens all the time to guys with cool cars. Could get yourself a nice fuck or blow job just for a ride around town." She knew things like that bothered him, but her voice was light and she truly was teasing.

"Ever think I like my friends?" she asked. "They get along with me, we do things I like to do. Plus, most of the people you introduce me to are boring. The only one I've really liked so far is Hale. And that might just be because of the dog."

Which was why Nox and Hale spent so much time together. They had a lot in common, coped with things in much the same way... basketball, drinking, and working. All three helped to rid the mind of everything you didn't want to think about. They could talk as well, which was good. Nox had confided more in Hale than anyone else in his life. He would have liked to have been able to tell Hesper such things, but they didn't have that sort of relationship. Besides, she might not know all the details, but she knew him just the same.

He made a face of slight disgust when she mentioned living in Hell. He was so glad to be free of that place. Giving her a nudge with his foot, he smiled at her. "I was supposed to drag you back down there, you know? Good thing you've proved impossible to catch. I can't return until I'm able to get you to come along." She gave him a good excuse to stay put. He never wanted to return to Hell, even if he did miss his parents terribly. Hopefully they'd leave too, but he wasn't counting on it.

Nox felt the familiar sense of revulsion that came from these little conversations with Hesper. "Would you stop with the jail bait comments? It's creepy." Made him sound like a pervert, and he definitely wasn't.

"It's not just Blue that you like," he teased, "I've heard you like his cooking as well. Anyway, you behave yourself around him as well. I'm not getting another partner. Hale's my friend, and you're not having sex with him. Period."

Hesper stretched her arms around above her head. "If I really was trying to hide from you, I would be impossible to catch. God thing you never got the stupid idea in your head to actually bring me back there, otherwise you would have never found me. And then you would have been all alone up here and, I dunno, probably sold into the sex trade or something." It was a joke, but she was not sure how much of one. Nox was soft for a demon. If another demon showed up, she would probably have a better chance than he would, what with his morality and all.

Hesper snickered and looked at him with a wicked grin. "Why should I? You always look so grossed out, like I was talking about, I dunno, eating scorpion brains or something like that. Do you some good to be a bit more perverted than you are right now. As long as they're not a vampire, you're not allowed to date a vampire no matter how hot she is."

Hesper looked at him with a mock pout, leaning over towards her brother. "Not even if I like him? More than just the I want to steal his gun kind of liking?" she whined playfully, tugging at his sleeve. No matter what he said, if she wanted it she would get it eventually. Normally she would have gotten unethical a long time ago too.

"Yeah, well, you gave me the excuse I was looking for to come up here. So, thanks." He meant it, even if his words were a little dismissive in tone. He would have made an effort to sound as sincere as possible if he didn't think it would make Hesper uncomfortable or abusive in return. She didn't react well when he was all 'touchy feely', as she described it. Hesper preferred to keep their conversations humorous or argumentative.

"There are a few beautiful women in this building who are vampires, nice too. I just might give them a call, see if they'd like to join me for a bite to eat later this week." He grinned ear to ear, enjoying giving her a taste of her own medicine. "Maybe I'll even let them nibble on my neck. I've always thought the whole immortality thing sounded pretty good. And maybe Serena would date the dead guy, if I was a vampire too. What ya think?"

He looked at her seriously as she talked about Hale. "Do you like him?" he asked directly. "I'm not dealing with this anymore Hes... where you sleep around with my co-workers just to get under my skin or steal weapons. And Hale's too nice of a guy for you to chew him up and spit him out. Besides, he's going through a rough patch right now. He sorta got dumped."

Rollign her eyes, she leaned over and gave her brother an obnoxious kiss on the cheek. "Awww, you luffs me for that." she added to the kiss in an equally as obnoxious voice. Snickering she leaned back into her seat, shaking her head. She knew that he liked it better up here, and that without her he never would have gotten up here. But that was years and years ago, no reason for him to still be thanking her now. Fuck, she had only come up topside on a whim anyway.

Hesper gave him an almost deadly smirk when he said that. She let him continue on with his joke, waiting till he finished. "You bring home a vampire, and I'll even make dinner. A nice stake. Might give her a little heartburn though." In her mind, girls that would go for vampires weren't worth her brother's time anyway.

Her eyes rolled so strongly to that tirade that she almost felt them slide backwards into her head. "For one, I sleep with them cause I want to. Pissing you off is just a secondary thing. And I've only stolen a few weapons, hardly any at all." But she was not commenting on that situation. Hale was finally away from that vampire, and she was very good with that. In fact, it made her just a bit joyous.

Nox's face squished up as she kissed his cheek, and he wrapped his arm around her for a second before shoving her away, his hand messing up her hair at the same time. "Brat. I don't know how I manage to put up with you. All this affection you shower me with, it's really too much. I need some space er something," he teased. The exact opposite was true. He wanted her around more often, was usually the one being pushed away when he gave her a hug or something.

He gave a hearty, "Har. Har. Har. So very funny, Hes. But seriously, I don't think you have to worry about it. I'm not looking to date anyone right now. Between work and everything else, I don't have the time for it," which was a lie. He just didn't think he was up to the challenge. Serena had come along purely at random, and while he'd been hesitant with her, he thought it was foolish to ignore a possible opportunity, so he asked her out a few times. That fell through, so now he was back to his previous holding pattern.

"You didn't answer my question," he said firmly, avoiding saying anything else, trying to force her into addressing the issue at hand. He was mortified by the idea of her hooking up with his best friend and partner, and it was hard pin down the bigger reason for his objection. Was it because he wanted to protect his sister, and because of that no man was good enough? Or was it because he was looking out for Hale, knowing the way Hesper treated men when she got bored with them? It was likely a good mix of both, making him positive it would be a bad thing if they ever dated.

"Oh you need some space?" she asked with a laugh, shaking her head at him. "Everytime I give you space it's all 'Oh Hesper, where have you gone, oh Hesper you make me worry soooo much.'" Poking him in the side playfully, she grinned at him. Yeah she was not around as much as he wanted her to be, but she had never been one to stay around one place for long. She was notable for it even before they came to the surface.

That was a lie. Not even a very good one either, she could see through it as if it were a window. He was never giong to go looking, and Hesper knew he was lonely. But there was no one that she knew of that she could bring around to fix that. The kind of person her brother would need was not the kind of person she ran into. Maybe he would meet some nice girl through work, somehow, that he bonded with. Other than that she figured he was going to stay lonely for quite a long time.

Hesper shifted uncomfortably and pulled out a cigarette. Lighting it she took a drag to ignore the question a bit longer. There were few things she hated more than being forced to answer something. "Maybe there isn't a good answer to it, you think about that?" she said, frowning as she blew the smoke out.

"I only say that stuff to make you feel needed. I'm actually quite annoyed by your presence." Nox gave her a poke in the side in return, before he outright tickled her. "You should just move out already. Give me that space I need." He continued to attack her sides. "Then I wouldn't have to clean up after ya, buy extra food all the time..." He wrapped an arm around her to keep her from wiggling away, "Oh yeah, and I could play all my video games alone, just the way I like." Nox went so far as to give her a merciless noogie.

All the playing made for a nice distraction. He was lonely. It was a problem he tried to ignore, and working nearly non-stop helped. It also helped when Hesper was home. Worrying over her gave him a lot less time to think about other stuff. Hopefully he wouldn't lose his job or Hesper... otherwise he might be forced to confront his 'demons'.

Nox snatched the cigarette from her hand. Licking his fingers, he extinguished it in a pinch. "No smoking in the apartment. You know that." He set the dead cigarette on a drink coaster, and turned back to her, giving her a nudge. "If you actually liked him, I might see things differently. He's a great guy."

Hesper squeaked and arched away from him when he poked her. When he went for the full on tickling she tried to keep from laughing, but it did not seem to work to well. "Hey, off you bastard!" she choked out through laughs, hitting at him in a weak attempt to get him off of her. "Oi, you stop that!" she cried out when he went as far as to give her a noogie. Squirming out of his grip, she tickled his sides in retaliation. "Don't make me be mean now!"

It was rare when Nox actually played around. More often than not he just got pissed off it seemed. It was nice to see him not so on edge. Because really, there was only so much of on edge that she could stand. Everyone had their limit when dealing with that kind of thing after all.

"Hey!" she said, frowning as he put out her cigarette. Grumbling under her breath about communist brothers who were against smoking and fun in general, she resist the urge to just light up another one. He really was anal when it came to it. Though given his job she had no clue why he had never picked them up. "And it wouldn't matter anyway, because you've got him fucking nearly terrified of me."

Oh it was ON now! Nox wasn't terribly ticklish, not unless you knew the right spots, and sadly, as a twin, Hesper knew them all. He really hated how much she knew about him sometimes, because it was definitely used as a weapon, especially in this situation. He wiggled away from her, laughing loudly and struggling to breathe as she got the upper hand in their little tickle war. "Stop... stop... seriously... HES!" He gasped for air and continued to laugh so hard it hurt. Evil woman!

Yeah, it was really nice to let go and be a goof ball for a while. Nox didn't do it very often. Wasn't that he didn't know how to have fun, he did, it was just wasn't the sort of fun others understood. Though, this was pretty obvious to just about anyone, if they'd been watching that is. He liked seeing Hesper be silly too. It was like when were kids and they'd be screaming at one another, fighting over something stupid, when suddenly she'd smack him and yell 'TAG' before running off. It instantly diffused the situation, and they forgot all about the fight and started playing instead.

"I don't care that they can't really harm you. They smell disgusting. Plus, they're a waste of money." Logical. He never stopped to consider that she might just enjoy them, that they helped calm the body and mind.

He took a few moments to consider what she said, sorta feeling bad. Nox didn't want to scare nice guys away from Hesper, just the jerks. But the idea of her and Hale getting together still made his skin crawl, and he knew it was doomed to go wrong in the end, and then he'd be stuck in a very awkward situation. Still, all he cared about was making his sister happy, and if she actually liked Hale, then he needed to try and help. "Do you want me to talk to him... make him unterrified? 'Cause I will," he offered in a sweet voice, attempting to show her that he cared and wanted to make a real effort to help. There was no reason for her and Hale to be lonely like him. If they actually got along, then who was he to keep them apart?
