Week Ten: Monday, April 7th
Who: Nox and Alex
When: Monday night, 10ish
Where: The Barking Spider Tavern, then Nox's apartment

Nox finished with work later than expected, but it had taken time to tie up all the loose ends at the crime scene. He had to make sure everything was catalogued, photographed, and taken to the lab if necessary. Then there was the matter of sealing up the residence to ensure any evidence that might still be lingering would stay undisturbed. Elderly woman, killed in her own home. Her husband was missing. Nox didn't like to think about it, but the pieces were starting to add up. It appeared as though he'd likely stabbed the woman to death and ran. How could someone in their 80's, after more than 60 years together, snap like that all of a sudden? It didn't make sense to Nox, then again, few things he saw had any rhyme or reason to them. People were insane.

When he realized he'd soon be leaving, he texted Alex, telling the guy he was on his way. Heading for his car, Nox gave his partner a pat on the back, "I'm off to meet up with Serena's brother. I'll call ya tomorrow." With that, Nox left, trying to clear his mind as he drove. It was difficult not to carry around the gruesomeness of his job, though he'd gotten better at compartmentalizing his life over the years. It was the only way to function. You had to turn off your soul sometimes while working, and you had to put the disturbing scenes in a box when you weren't specifically dealing with them. He couldn't think about that stuff right now, he needed to focus on whatever might be bothering Alex.

The voicemail message had been brief, but Alex sounded sufficiently frustrated, and maybe even a little scared. Nox wasn't sure what to make of it. At least it didn't seem critical in the way that something bad might have happened to Serena, just sounded as though the two might be at odds with one another. 'My sister has lost her fucking mind' could simply mean that she'd made a decision that Alex disapproved of. Nox assumed as much, and that was the attitude he'd keep until Alex gave him cause to actually worry.

Soon enough, Nox pulled up to the Barking Spider. He pulled up the collar of his jacket as he walked from his car to the tavern, a gust biting at the back of his neck. Once inside, he was able to pull off the jacket, loosen his tie, and have a seat.

When he got the message that Nox was on his way, Alex was nearly on the other side of Seattle. Of course because of this, he was a bit delayed in arriving and didn't get there until shortly after ten, parking MIA nearly a block away from the bar so as to avoid any drunken assholes putting their hands on her.

With hands shoved down into the pockets of his jeans, looking like he hadn't slept or shaved in a day or two, he made his way down the sidewalk to the bar and in through the front doors. He had been here more than once and some of the people here knew him by name. It was a nice little place. And in his opinion, it was the perfect place to have this conversation which he knew would floor Nox just as much as it had him. It was completely unlike Serena to be so damn irrational. But no amounts of glares or no length of time spent giving her the cold shoulder seemed to have any impact on anything at all.

"Hey, man." He said in greeting as he slid into a chair on the other side of the table. "What's up?" Funny how Nox had a job that was probably twice as bad as his and yet Alex looked much more worse for wear. It was hard for him to really function right now though. Fighting with his sister always put him in all sorts of a bad mood.

Nox had already ordered a whiskey on ice and was casually sipping at it, trying to ease his mind and body, when Alex walked in. Raising his glass slightly with a nod and warm smile, Nox answered in a slow drawl, "Not too bad. Good to see you, Alex. Sit down and order something on the tab I started." Nox had taken Alex's message seriously, and he was alright with buying the man some drinks.

"Nothing's up with me. Same old. Work... worrying over Hesper... more work. Why don't you tell me what's going on with you and your sister. You sounded upset in your message." Nox didn't see any reason in tip toeing around the issue. Alex had asked to meet up for drinks and a talk, and here Nox was with the drinks and an open ear.

The observant man that he was, he took in everything about Alex's appearance. The guy looked rough. Maybe this issue between brother and sister was bigger than Nox had assumed. Either that, or Alex's appearance was the result of some other stress, and if that were the case, Nox was willing to listen to other such issues.

Alex already had a tab here. Not that he didn't settle it up every time that he left, but they knew him well enough by now that no one had an issue with just giving him what he wanted. But on the other hand, he was never one to turn down some free booze. "Give me a shot of whiskey, straight, and a beer chaser. Budweiser." He said when the barmaid came over to the table. "Thanks." A nod was given towards Nox as he settled into the seat.

"Ya sure ain't one to beat around the bush, are ya?" Alex asked, not expecting to get into the topic so very soon. "Wait till my drink gets here. I think I need a shot before I even know where to start." It was just so crazy. It would be difficult to even think of a way to approach the subject much less to approach it in a serious manner. But it was serious. This was his sister and she was in some kind of trouble and that fucker had her brainwashed or something. This was all just incredibly fucked!

The drink came quickly, just as he knew it would, and the shot was downed before it even hit the table, the beer following it up nicely. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and then sighed. "Did Serena ever mention anything to you about her fiance, ex fiance, Kayden?" He should start from there if any of it was going to make sense, not that it would regardless.

Nox tapped the side of his glass, "I'm a whiskey man as well. I enjoy beers and all, have to say Becks is my preference, but never can go wrong with whiskey." He didn't have a problem with drinking just a few. Nox had high tolerance from being a demon and all, plus, he was always keenly aware of his limits, and should he have too much, he didn't hesitate to call himself a cab. If this meeting with Alex was more involved than expected, and lots more drinks were consumed, they could split the fair for the ride home.

Shrugging and swallowing a sip he'd just taken, Nox put his drink back on the table. "I'm a detective. It's a bit of a habit to get straight to the point. Besides, that's why we're here, right? You wanted to talk. I came to listen and try to help if it's possible." The idea that Alex needed a shot before he could talk, well, that was worrisome.

Nox felt somewhat uncomfortable when Alex mentioned that Serena had been engaged. "No. She never told me. In all honesty, we haven't spoken much in recent weeks. Work and other things have simply gotten in the way... at least they have on my end. I assume the same is probably true with her." Serena had a very involved job, one that demanded a lot of her time and energy. He didn't take it as an insult at all that she'd not contacted him, and considering he'd not reached out to her either, well, it didn't speak to highly of him. Perhaps he should have called more often, he did consider her a friend, after all.

"Regardless... I'm assuming there's some issuing involving her former fiance?" Nox had a million and one follow up questions, mostly just because he was interested in Serena, but might have to reconsider his feelings if this man from the past hadn't stayed in the past. Was he back in her life? Why had things ended? How long ago had it been?

"Whiskey is the only liquor there is." The shit that some men drank wasn't enough to even grow hair on ones balls. What was the fuss about vodka about? And tequila? A real man drank some dark liquor and he drank it straight without any of that mixer shit. That was just his opinion. "I prefer to keep it domestic, but Becks is good for import." A man of refined taste Alex was not.

He nodded his head. The man had a point. He didn't mind that he was so blunt. It kept things on the up and up, kept things straight, he just thought he would have a little more time to work up the.. whatever it would require to tell him about this.

"He died. Or so he said." He shrugged his shoulders a bit. "Or his friend said. I mean, obviously he couldn't say that he died, right?" He laughed a little uncomfortably. "Well anyways, long story short, I ran into him in the hallway. Turns out he's not dead, lives in our building, and Serena knew about it. But that's not the fucked up part."

It required another chug of beer and another nod to the barmaid to order some more whiskey before he could choke the rest of it out. "He's got her convinced that he's..." He couldn't say this shit out loud. "He's a vampire." The last word was whispered as he leaned in a bit, too ashamed to let anyone else know how seriously fucked up his sister was in the head right now.

"I've never had much of a preference on country of origin. Good liquor is good liquor. I don't care about where it's made." Considering Nox wasn't American, not even human, who was he to judge the merits of various countries and their exports? He drove a Toyota sedan. Made in the U.S., profits sent to Japan.

Technically, there was a way Kayden could have 'died' and said so, but Nox wasn't about to point that out to the oblivious human sitting beside him. Still, regardless how the man reportedly 'died', it had to have been hard on Serena, and that made Nox frown with concern.

Nox's concern grew as Alex went on. Kayden lived in the Towers? That was definitely something to worry about. Had the man faked his death? And if so, why? Plus, why was he back now, and did he have ill intentions where Serena was concerned? And why hadn't she told her brother? A million questions ran through Nox's head, the investigator in him immediately going to work.

The questions came to a grinding halt though when the word vampire escaped Alex's lips. Nox froze, his eyes immediately leaving Alex to stare down into the glass of ice that only contained a few remaining drops of whiskey. "Vampire," he whispered slowly, as though letting the word sink in.

This was going to be a much more difficult conversation than Nox had originally assumed, and he wasn't sure what direction their chat should head next. Raising his hand to give him a moment to think about all this, Nox ordered another round of drinks. He stayed quiet while waiting for them to arrive, even took a few sips before finally speaking again.

"Serena told you that she's spoken to Kayden, and he informed her that he's a vampire? And what about his supposed death, how did that come about?" he asked, hoping to gain clarity. Nox had seen Serena in passing in just the last week, and it had been light out, so she hadn't been turned by her former fiance. That was a good sign at least. Perhaps the man had control over his lust.

And now he understood Alex's concern. He could see the wheels turning in Nox's mind as they sat there and he knew he had come to the right person. If anyone could help, and would want to, then it would be Nox. He had to look out for Serena, whether she got pissed about it or not. And this wasn't normal. It wasn't normal at all.

He downed the second double shot of whiskey as Nox took a moment to think about what he had said, thinking that the man was probably trying to come up with something better to say than "You're right. Your sister has lost her mind.", but how could he not say just that.

The reaction was a little different than he had expected and he just sort of frowned a little, taking a moment to digest that before responding to the questions. "She always knew, apparently, when they were engaged or.. I dunno. She said something about some tests, some cure, and he doesn't know who he is, or was, or whatever. Supposedly." Clearly he was skeptical when it came to that part, to all of it honestly.

So Serena knew of the supernatural world all along? That made Nox wonder if she suspected him as anything more than an average human, though surely she would have given some indication if that were the case. Besides, Nox was very careful, and what with him secretly wanting to be human, he acted more like one than most other demons.

"How did your conversation with Serena come about? Did she initiate it, or did you?" If Alex had cornered her, she may have been forced into confessing something she had been trying to keep a secret. Not that it mattered all that much in the end, the truth was still out there. Serena had been engaged to a vampire, and she'd known it. It seemed odd that a human woman would choose such a life. Nox often worried about that on the rare occasions when he went on dates. He was going to live for a very long time, and any woman he married, if not a supernatural race, wasn't going to be around to share that life with him. Perhaps Serena was considering changing so that she could stay with Kayden. Was that the reason they'd ended things? Was it because she'd wanted to, or maybe she'd refused to.

But Alex said something about a cure. That made more sense. "Serena, in her belief that he's a vampire, also believes that she can undo what has been done to him. She wishes to make him human again. It's understandable, especially if her feelings for him remain," he said matter of factly, as though simply analyzing this from the point of view that he had to take Serena's beliefs into consideration, not treat her like a crazy person, but be rational with her and Alex. After all, how did Nox simply tell Alex that his sister wasn't crazy?

"She did." Alex said, getting a little bit frustrated that this wasn't going exactly like it had gone in his head. Granted, he didn't want anyone saying that his sister was a nutjob, but she was, and clearly Nox was trying to rationalize that way. "I ran into him in the hall and we got into a fight. She wanted to talk to me about it. She just.. she blurted that out and I told her she was fucking crazy!" He sighed, shaking his head. "I told her not to see that fucker anymore but she won't listen. She actually believes this shit!" And that was the most fucked up part, that she used her smarts, her education, in Kayden's defense.

"Wait. No. You misunderstood. He apparently left to try to get cured. She wasn't trying to do it. He left and it fucked up or something and I dunno. I have no idea." He sighed and downed the rest of the first beer, pulling the second one up closer to him. "What the fuck am I supposed to do about this? I mean, obviously, I need to keep her away from his crazy ass."

This was all very difficult to handle. Nox couldn't just outright say that Serena wasn't crazy, that vampires were real. But he also couldn't think of a good way to, well, lie. Not in a way that would calm Alex and help fix the tension this situation had created between brother and sister. Regardless how the issue was handled, it probably shouldn't be done here, because if Nox did end up with no other option than to let Alex in on the world's secrets, it was a confession that would likely be met with some degree of hysteria.

Raising his hand again, Nox summoned their waitress and settled up his tab on the spot. "Come on, Alex. Let's go back to the Towers to talk about this further. I've got beers and whiskey at my place."

He stood up and waited to see if Alex would take him up on the offer. "This is a complex situation, much more difficult than I presumed. I don't think a bar is the place to discuss such things. We wouldn't want anyone to overhear and make assumptions about your sister that simply aren't true." She was a doctor in this community, and Nox was a detective... two positions of respect, and it wouldn't do for anyone to think the pair of them were insane.

Perhaps too soon to joke about the wings. Oh well, worth a chance. Nox was trying to set Alex at ease, and he thought maybe being light-hearted would help. Apparently not. Still, Alex wasn't running for the doors at the mention of wings, so maybe that was progress? Or maybe Alex's brain had sorta broken for the stress of this whole evening, and he couldn't manage to get out of his seat as a result.

Nox nodded, "No problem." Never having been one to get 'pissed' unless something major happened (or something minor where Hesper was concerned), a little spilt beer was hardly anything to fret over. He simply cleaned it up.

After returning the wet towel to the kitchen, Nox came back to take a seat on the couch with a new beer for himself. "Sorry for being so blunt with you about everything. But if I'd simply told you, you would have thought I was crazy... like you did with your sister. Anyway, yeah. I really am the same guy you've gotten to know. You just know a lot more about me and my family now."

It was probably a little of this and a little of that. It was still difficult to think about the whole wing thing. And the claws? What the fuck was up with the claws? Damn. He needed to remind himself to always stay on Nox's good side, that was for sure. Cause that shit right there? That would fuck him up but good.

Some people freaked out about things like beer spilled on their carpet. The place was so nice that he probably would have freaked out himself but then again, he would never have a place like this one. Any place he would ever get on his own would be completely spillable. That was the one rule he set for himself.

Another small laugh was heard as Alex took yet another drink from the bottle. "You're probably right. I probably woulda thought there wasn't a sane person in Seattle and went runnin back to Tahoe asap." He shook his head softly. "Still fucked though. I mean, no offense to you but.. you're a little bit fuckin scary now."

Alex really had nothing to worry about where Nox was concerned. So long as Alex didn't hurt Hesper, he and Nox would continue to get along perfectly. If anything, Nox was a great person to have as a friend. He was slow to anger, but if necessary, he'd pull out all the stops to protect the people in his life. That included Alex and Serena, even though they weren't close friends just yet.

Nox's home was definitely tidy. Beyond tidy, really. No messes were ever left to sit while he was at work or sleeping. He cleaned up after himself and Hesper (when she was home), and the whole apartment got a good scrubbing at least once a week... sometimes more when he was stressed. Yeah, he was a neat freak. It was too much for some people to handle, including Hesper. When she came home, she seemed to make a point to mess things up, if only to irritate Nox.

"No offense taken. I understand that what I am is scary to most humans. You've not been educated about demons and other beings from hell. You don't know about the supernatural world outside of what is written as fiction. Movies and books get a lot of it wrong too. Demons aren't inherently evil. We're as diverse in personality and abilities as humans are. There are many types. I'm a shadow demon, which means I have control over shadows. I can manipulate them, cloak myself in them, and one day I'll be able to turn myself into a shadow. Hesper's the same. I don't think he'll mind me outing him... so I may as well let you know that my partner, Hale... he's a shapeshifter. He can transform himself into animals that are similar in size to him. And, as I said... the managers here, they're vampires. You've been surrounded by us since moving here, and it's likely you have always been near some sort of supernatural since birth. We live all over the world, come from every possible social and economic situation. Your best bet is to just not think of us as being all that different. Because we really aren't. We have more in common with humans than you probably realize."

The whiskey was doing its job in relaxing him. Sometimes drinking just put him more on edge but fortunately, tonight it was doing quite the opposite. The more he sipped from the bottle, the more calm he was, the less tense his body became, and the more open to conversation about this he actually seemed to be. The mention of hell did perk his attention again, and he leaned forward a bit in his chair as Nox finished all that he had to say before revisiting that subject.

"So.. okay. Hell exists then?" He asked, a brow arching slightly as he allowed the question to linger. "I mean is it.. is it just another place, another dimension, or does it exist like in the biblical sense? With the different realms and levels of hell and the tormented and tortured spirits of sinners all around?" That was a very freaking fucking concept and it would be good to know that that wasn't something you had to worry about when you died. Then again, if there were no hell like that, there was no Heaven either, not that he was really religious but he did hope for something good after death.

Nox chuckled lightly, not out of amusement so much, just glad to see that Alex was calming enough to actually be curious. The questions were more than welcome, though Nox didn't know that he was enough of an expert to answer them with any real authority.

"Hell is real. And it's not a place of enjoyment, though it's not the fire and brimstone of the bible. I don't even know if it's connected in any way, shape, or form to an afterlife... sorry I can't give you any insight into that grand mystery." He felt that might be the direction the conversation was headed, and he wanted to clarify right off the top that the Hell Nox knew was not the same one from scripture.

"Demons also aren't the spawn of the Devil... as you might have heard in Sunday school. We're a race of people. Flesh and blood. We live longer than humans and are resistant to your diseases, but we do grow old and die eventually. Though, the aging process is slower. I'm 42 years old. But when I'm 70, there's a good chance I won't look much older than I do now. It creates a problem where identity is concerned. I probably won't be able to live here more than another decade. People will wonder why I'm not aging. Lots of supernaturals avoid integrating with human societies for this reason. It's difficult for us to blend in sometimes... and purchasing paper work... like social security cards, passports, that sort of thing... it's not cheap. It was very difficult for me to get accepted onto the police force. I had a lot of practice with lying in order pass the polygraph. My guess is there aren't a lot of supernaturals who go after government positions. Background checks are a real pain... especially if you weren't born in human society. All my records are falsified. The work is well done, but if someone every really started digging, they might be able to out me as a fraud."

It was kinda disappointing that he couldn't give him any answers as far as that was concerned but that didn't make him any less curious about it, even if a part of him was trying to say that he should just shut up and not ask too many questions. It might not benefit him to know the answers to some of the questions that were inside of his head.

The mention of him being forty-two was enough to illicit a small laugh though clearly Nox was being serious about it. "Well, all I gotta say about that, man, is that I hope I still look that good at your age." A smirk graced his lips as he brought the bottle up to his lips once more and took another heavy swallow of the amber liquor. "That part's gotta suck though. But hey! At least if I ever have the need to change my identity, I'll know who to call." He smirked a little and had another drink, leaning back into the chair once more.

"It'd be neat to be a shapeshifter." He finally said, thinking about that one for a moment. "I don't think I'd mind that too much. Probably go through a lot of clothes though."

Nox laughed as well, and it was nice to hear that chuckle from Alex. "It's all in the genes, man." And that was the truth! "But in all seriousness, it can be hard. And from what I've heard from older supernaturals, it gets even harder, especially if you make close friendships with humans... or, well, marry them," he mumbled. Nox was hesitant to bring that up, but it was true. "I dated a woman for a while... human... and that was always on my mind. It's a difficult decision to make, because you both know one of you is gonna be around a lot longer than the other. And the idea of loving someone, but only being able to share a small fraction of your life with them, it's enough to make a lot of supernaturals decide against it." Nox had thought about that many times over. If he married a human, she'd likely die hundreds of years before him, and he didn't know if he could continue to go on living alone like that. No one wanted such a life.

He tried to keep their conversation light though, and rolled his eyes a little at the thought of getting Alex a fake identity. "Just don't go committing any major federal crimes, alright? If you need a new identity to escape a stalker or something, that's one thing, but I'm not helping you escape from jail and putting you in my own personal witness protection program. Won't happen, man. I'm not a human, but I still try to live by all their laws."

"Well, I'll invite Hale to join us for drinks some night, and you can ask him all about it. We don't really talk about such stuff. We play hoops, discuss women, toss back shots, and brainstorm together when we're on the job. It's nice though... having a partner who at least understands the other side of things."

Nox finished off his beer and eyed the bottle of whiskey still in Alex's hand. The man was doing some serious damage to the liquor, and Nox was starting to wonder if Alex would be sober enough to even walk to his apartment. "You're welcome to crash if you want. Just a warning though, if Hesper comes home, she might try to molest you."

That was probably the one thing he had yet to consider when it came to Serena and Kayden. Would he want to turn her? Would she stay human, grow old, die, and Kayden would still be around? He didn't really want to think about all of that. He didn't want to think about what either of those options would mean for her nor about what they would mean for Alex. He didn't want to think about her possibly spending her life with a man that wasn't even human. The thought of it made his head hurt.

"Any trouble I get into won't be that bad I don't reckon." He replied, a small laugh given though now his thoughts were clearly preoccupied with thoughts of his sister's life with this man if that were what it came down to.

"Yeah. Yeah. That would be fun." Alex said, pushing those thoughts aside in his mind as he took another drink from the bottle. Half gone and he had just started on it. Needless to say he was starting to feel a little bit slammed. Though thinking about walking home right now didn't really sit too well with him. He didn't want to go there and her be there right now. He needed to get his head on straight before he talked to her again.

That last part was enough to make him laugh, a smirk gracing his lips as he raised the bottle to them once more. "I might not mind it." Clearly he wasn't thinking about the fact that if Nox were a demon, his sister was as well. He was too drunk to make the connection, too tired to bother trying to, and not concerned enough to even really care.

Alex was fading fast, and Nox knew it was only a matter of time before the guy was passed out cold. The plus side of the situation was that Alex seemed to not care all too much about Nox being a demon. He didn't seem worried at all about sleeping where he sat. Surely if Alex had been sober, he'd be less inclined to do so. Seemed the alcohol had helped a great deal in diffusing the situation.

"I'm not set to work tomorrow, but there's always the risk that I'll get called in for a case. So, if I'm not here when you wake up, just let yourself out." With that, Nox stood up. He walked over to his bedroom and found a spare pillow and blanket, bringing them back for Alex. "Here ya go. Make yourself at home on the sofa if you'd like... and get some sleep."

Alex was clinging to consciousness as Nox left the room again, this time to retire for the night. He kept his cell phone on the night stand out of necessity, and as he climbed into bed, he grabbed it, sending a quick text to Serena to let her know that he and Alex had been drinking, and that her brother would be sleeping it off on the couch. Nox didn't want her to worry, especially considering their 'argument' regarding Kayden.

He had a lot of thoughts spinning through his head as he fell asleep. And as he dreamed, he was thinking like the detective he was, trying to work out this whole situation with Serena being in love with a vampire. There would be a lot of work to do when he woke up.

Nox felt for Alex, he really did. What the man was going through had to be difficult. It was enough mental stress to make your brain hurt, that was for sure. But hopefully now that Alex was wise to the truth, he and Serena could have a real conversation about everything. They still had a lot to work through, but at least now he would believe her.

"He's a good guy. Really. Best partner a guy could ask for, and an even better friend. We'll get together for drinks soon, if you're interested. I think he might still be wallowing. Women troubles have him down at the moment. I didn't think it was that serious, but now that it appears to be over, he's really broken up about it. I might need to take him out and get him good and drunk in the next couple of days." Poor Hale. Nox hated seeing him down like that.

"I know what you mean. I've had friends who look at us a bit strangely, since Hesper lives with me part time, but she's the only family I have here. Our parents are still in Hell, and it's my job to look after her. The best way to do that is to keep her close by whenever possible. So, I cook and give her a free place to stay... it's the best way to bribe her into checking in from time to time so I know she's ok." He shook his head, worried now as he always was. "I just don't get it... this urge of hers to be as impossible as possible. I think sometimes that she does this stuff simply to get on my nerves. Then again, she's been wild since day one."

A real conversation was certainly in order though he too doubted that it would just magically fix everything. The truth of the matter was that, as much as he liked Nox as a person, he wasn't really all that cool with the whole supernatural thing. He wasn't sure how he felt about his sister dating someone that wasn't human. Granted, he felt that Nox would be a great guy for her, but he wasn't a vampire. He wasn't going to try to turn her into one of them in order to keep her around longer like this guy might eventually decide to do. It wasn't going to be pleasant even now that he believed her.

"See? That is why you gotta keep it casual. Girls.. I mean they will go out of their way to break your heart sometimes. And they say they didn't mean to, they weren't doing it on purpose, it just happened that way, but I think that deep down inside, they do mean it, and it is on purpose. I think they just wanna take out whatever hurt has been put on them on every single guy that comes along." He nodded his head. "That's my opinion anyway."

Hell. That got him every time. It was just so weird to have someone say something like "oh my parents are still in hell". Honestly. Insane. True but insane. "I.. yeah, I thought about getting my own place, been thinking about it, working towards it but.. I dunno. I'm thinkin' that I might just wanna stick around right now, get shit settled before I find my own place." He shrugged his shoulders a bit. "I dunno how you do it. I mean, if my sister was like that, I would probably have her ass locked up somewhere. I wouldn't be able to take it." And that was the truth.

Nox eyed Alex with doubt and what could have been seen as pity even. "You have a very strange, and in my opinion, misguided view of women. I wouldn't put that label on all of them based on a few bad ones along the way. You aren't the only man to have been burned, Alex." Nox still felt a slight twinge of pain in his own heart over his last relationship, one he'd thought might last as long as life itself. But it wasn't to be. He wasn't angry with her though, not directly. "I'm not going to tell you how to go about your dating life, but at least try to view women as you view yourself."

Shrugging, Nox made his way back over to the sofa, taking a seat with his paper, which he still had to finish reading. Then he'd be heading off on his run. "She's my sister, I could never have her locked up, even if I thought it was for her own good. I don't know, I just do my best to keep her safe, and hope she uses her brain. Hesper's smart, really smart, and she's strong too. I know she can take care of herself... for the most part. I just don't trust the rest of the world."

"Oh don't get me wrong. I ain't sayin that there are no good women out there because I know there are. The thing is though, most of the good women are the women that haven't been around the block a few times. And they're the ones that end up hurtin somebody cause they don't know what they want yet." He said, giving a small shrug of his shoulders. "Then by the time they figure it out, they're just as jaded as the rest of em." He shook his head though. "Couldn't never view one like me though. I mean, similar, cause we're both up to no good, but it's different. Definitely."

Alex headed into the living room area as well, moving to grab his shoes before taking a seat in the chair so that he could tug them on. "I think I probably could." Lock Serena up, that is. Maybe he could, maybe he couldn't. He hoped she would never give him reason enough to know for sure. "I reckon with what the two of you got goin for ya, you don't have to worry too much about the rest of the world when it comes to her. I'm sure she can handle her own." At least she wasn't human and vulnerable like Serena was, though Serena would smack him just for that thought alone.

Nox just shrugged and started putting on his tennis shoes. He wasn't going to argue with Alex where women were concerned. Nox was far from an expert, and he knew his opinions were rarely popular, which was why he typically kept them to himself. So long as Alex wasn't hurting anyone, he could do whatever he wanted. Nox wasn't going to judge the guy.

Looking up at Alex, Nox frowned slightly. "She and I are strong in comparison to humans, that's true. But not compared to others of our kind. There's a lot you don't understand about our world, Alex." He sighed and slumped back in his seat. "Another shadow demon attacked her a few weeks back. I think now that it was probably a case of mistaken identity, because I doubt he would have let her live otherwise, but it's still something serious to worry about. There are feuds going on in Hell that could rival your nation's own Civil War. I never thought Hesper and I would have to worry about any of it, because our family isn't involved, but mistakes are made when someone ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time."

He stood up and started stretching. "Anyway, it's all a little too involved to discuss right now. I'm heading off for a run, then I've got a lot of errands to take care of. You should get home, clean up, and figure out what you're gonna say to Serena."

"But at least she has that much going for her." Alex protested, thinking that that was at least something. Serena had nothing. And now that he knew the truth, he had even more reason to worry about her than he had had before. "But yeah, I mean.. I'm sure that it's dangerous for her out there too." He didn't want to make him feel like he was belittling his problems either. Most supernaturals probably didn't care too much about humans and therefore probably left them alone, right? He could be wrong on that one. But with Serena putting herself into the mix... He had just as much right to be worried as anyone else. "And it still catches me off guard when you bring up something about hell," he added with a small chuckle.

"Yeah. Yeah, I should do that." He said, moving to his feet and giving his body a stretch. "I'll let ya know how it goes. And as soon as he hears something, I'll give you a ring, let you know what we're looking at and when. Cool?" He waited for an acknowledgment before seeing himself out. "Thanks.." He added as he was heading out the door. "For everything."
