Entry tags:alex, serena

Week Seven: Tuesday
When: Evening
Where: Serena's apartment
Who: Serena and Alex

Serena really wasn't looking forward to having this chat but she really didn't have any other choice. Kaden was back in her life and that was something that she not only had to explain, but something that Alex was going to have to accept and get used to. Hopefully everything would go smoothly but when trying to convince someone of vampires she wasn't sure that smooth was an option. Oh well, here's to hoping! Though Serena wasn't going to base the outcome of this chat on hope alone.

After her shift she had headed to the store to get beer and the makings for Alex's favorite meal. Hey, nothing wrong with trying to soften the guy up a bit, right? Now whether or not it would actually work was a completely different story but she had faith in her abilities. Besides, it wasn't like he could stay mad at her forever. And eventually he was going to have to deal with reason and yeah.

When she heard the sound of keys jingling, she stopped what she was doing at the stove and headed to the fridge to grab a beer. Oh yeah, she was going to start this by liquoring him up or at least giving him a decent buzz. "Hey, how was work?" she asked nonchalantly as she handed the bottle over. Nothing like a bit of small talk to dance around the purple elephant in the corner of the room. "I hope you're hungry, I've made your favorite..." A hesitant yet bright smile was flashed as she did her best not to look nervous. Please oh please let this go well.

The day had been a long and difficult one. First off, there was the whole Kaden thing. And then, his shift had run long because another guy had called in. By the time he made it to the garage, he was utterly exhausted, but it was his plan to finish the shit today so he went at it hard and quick but still as detailed as ever. In the end, the hard work had paid off. Or actually, that was yet to be determined, but he would know soon enough.

Serena being so near to the door had actually startled him a little, and though he didn't jump, he gave her a strange look before he reached out and took the beer in hand. "Long. You?" Yeah, he wasn't looking forward to this conversation, wasn't even looking forward to eating as tired as he was right now, but he had made a promise and he was always the kind to keep it. "Smells good." And it did, even if the thought of having to ingest some made his stomach churn a little.

Keys tossed on the counter, he announced, "I'm going to go change." A hand ran back through already messy hair as he placed the beer down and headed to his room, changing into some pajama pants and a tee, heavy boots slipped off of feet which ached from a long night and day both. After splashing some water on his face, he re-emerged, looking no worse for the wear, but no better either.

Oo, he didn't look happy. Serena frowned when he wasn't looking. "The same." Great, now she got to talk to him after he had a long day at work and probably wanted to do anything but what they needed to do. Great timing Serena! She knew she should have just told him when he first came to stay but...it just wasn't something she knew how to explain. "Thanks." She didn't buy it. There was something off about the way he responded to the food and if she had to guess, he was probably as interested in eating as he was talking.

"Okay, I'll finish setting the table." Even if he didn't want to eat he could at least push his food around his plate while he avoided making eye contact or something. Or maybe that would be her excuse? Eh, whatever worked.

"Go ahead and take a seat while I dish up." Rather than piling his plate like she normally did, she gave him a modest helping and then joined him at the table with a wine glass in hand. "So..." Crap, how was she supposed to start this? "I know I should have told you and I'm sorry that you found out the way you did but..." Just spit out, Serena! "Kaden's a vampire and he went missing after trying to find a cure and somehow wound up in Seattle without any memory of the past." It was like one runon sentence and her eyes went wide as she finished. So there it was.

"Want something harder to drink?" She knew that she did.

Alex had a bad habit of doing just what he had done today, pushing himself to the point of exhaustion. He never stopped when he was tired, never. He just kept on going, kept on pushing, until he was dead on his feet. Today was worse though. He had so much anger in him, so much confusion and so much energy because of it that it was impossible for him to slow down. And now that he wanted to, here was this, and he really wasn't sure he had it in him to deal with this tonight.

He gave a nod of his head when she told him to have a seat, plopping down heavily and taking another swig of his beer. One foot moved over to scratch the other, feet bare now, wearing just some pajama pants and a wife beater. He still had marks from his night with Prissy that he was certain his sister didn't need to see.

The food smelled good but he didn't reach for his fork right away. His stomach was churning and he wanted to see what she had to say. Of all the things he had expected to hear, of all the lame, sorry ass excuses he had anticipated, what came out of her mouth was not one of them.

Silence, and then he laughed. He laughed in that way that was uncomfortable at first and then lightened up a little as he raised his beer to his lips to have another drink. "Either you're sense of humor is really off tonight, or you've been smoking some good shit, Serena." He didn't buy it. Not for a second.

Uh no, if Alex had any "marks," she definitely did not want to see them. Ever. Or even know about them. Not even a hint of anything like that. Jeez. Moving on!

Laughter wasn't exactly the reaction she was expecting but she couldn't say that she was surprised either. If their positions had been reversed, she probably would have done the same thing. Really, the whole thing sounded completely ridiculous and she would have laughed right along with him if it hadn't been for the fact that she was serious.

Her gaze fell down to her plate as she debated what her next move was going to be. "I'm serious, Alex." Those blue eyes shifted back up to meet her brother's and there was no sign of humor on her part. "Just think about it for a second. When you came to stay with me those few days a couple of years ago, didn't you find it just a little strange that you never saw Kaden until after the sun had set? Or that he never ate with us because he had "eaten" earlier?" Come on, put the pieces together!

"I know it sounds insane but it's the truth."

How could he be expected to do anything but laugh. The idea was ridiculous. It was.. it was simply insane. And the more she spoke about it, the more worried he became for her mental health. Granted, the guy never went anywhere during the day but he was a musician. He was used to staying up all night. And he never ate but Alex had just assumed that that was because, well, because he was on drugs or something. He hadn't acted like he was but if this was the crap he was feeding Serena now then yeah, maybe his initial thought had been right.

The laughter was gone and the smile was gone and all he could do was shake his head. "You really believe that?" She was nuts. The guy must have brainwashed her. Or maybe she was just under a lot of stress from her new job. Understandable. "He told you this?"

Ugh, how was she was supposed to get Alex to believe her when he was laughing at her? She was trying to be serious here! "Yes, I do." Come on Alex, would your Yale graduate sister believe in vampires if they weren't real? She was a freaking doctor! A top of her class doctor, she wasn't exactly the type to be fooled into believe something this crazy if it wasn't true.

"Yes, but technically I figured it out before he finally told me." Now that had to count for something because if she believed it before she was told then that had to mean something. "Come on, you're a good sized guy who has been in his fair share of fights and Kaden didn't even break a sweat when he pinned you against the wall."

It was becoming more and more apparent that she actually believed this bullshit, and more and more apparent that Alex did not. He looked at her, still with that look of disbelief, as if she had lost her fucking mind. And to him, she had. Little did he know that she knew much more about all of this than he did but he just couldn't accept it.

"That doesn't mean anything, Serena." Sure, it was strange that he had pinned him and hardly even felt it, but that didn't mean that he was undead. It just meant that Kaden had had his fair share of trouble as well.

"What? - How? - I just can't believe that you could possibly even begin to buy into this shit, Serena. You're a fucking doctor, for Christ's sake!"

Okay, Alex was just being a giant pain in the ass now. Serena thought that she was being logical about all of this and explaining it in a way that was easily understood, but nooo, he just wasn't getting it. Why couldn't he just believe his big sister like he used to? They both knew that she was the smart one, couldn't he just go with that?

"Exactly!" she yelled back. "I am a doctor! So you would think that I would be the most skeptical unless I knew it to be true!" So maybe she was getting a little irritated with the circular path this conversation was taking, but she couldn't help it. There was nothing she wanted more than to just beat the information into his brain until it finally took. Too bad she wasn't the violent type.

"First it was the cold skin. And I'm not talking chilly, I mean cold. Always cold, even when he would be bundled up. Then I noticed that he really didn't breathe like the rest of us. No matter what we were doing, he never got winded. Then of course there were the empty bags of blood I found when I knocked over the trash..." Was he getting it now? His sister wasn't crazy!

"What do I need to do to make you believe that I'm telling you the truth?"

"Well obviously that just means that.. that's he sick or, and fucking crazy!" There was no way he was going to believe it. And he honestly still could not wrap his mind around the fact that she did. This was completely unlike her. She was smarter than that. This was... it was bullshit is what it was.

"Serena? Do you hear yourself? Do you know how this sounds?" He asked, pleading with her to use her brain.

He shook his head, grabbing the bottle of beer off of the table to take a massive swig of it. "I don't think you need to see him anymore. I think that.. that we should move and we shouldn't tell him where he is because there is very obviously something wrong with him."
