Week Five: Wednesday Night
Who: Chris and Serena
Where: UW Medical Center
When: night

Chris had been stocking the supply closet at the far end of the west hall on the third floor before he became distracted by the storm raging outside. Admittedly, it had never taken a great deal to distract him, and it was even worse now after his encounter with the woman called Hesper. He was more nervous than usual these days, and while at work he took even more pains to hide from the co-worker who took special delight in tormenting him. Vernon Johnson was his own personal Hell, but even he paled next to the specter of the determined blonde woman who'd bullied her way into his apartment that night a couple of weeks ago.

He still was not entirely sure how he felt about what had happened, beyond frightened and nervous and besieged by presentiments of doom.

While arranging medical supplies and fresh towels and gauze on the shelves in their appointed places, his cart next to him and his presence hidden by the open door, he'd heard the boom of thunder, and that had drawn him out to the window that was located next to the closet. It had been storming for hours now, and the rain was torrential, and its effect on Chris was almost hypnotic. He was a good worker, and he always did his job, but somehow the rain drowned out this imperative in his mind. He stood with his back to the hallway, staring out at the driving sheets of water blown past the muted glow of the halogen lights in the parking lot. Everything was darker, more mysterious, and the sound of the downpour made him feel insulated from the entire world.

He thought about drawing the pattern the rain made on the window, and it was mildly frustrating that he'd just gotten to work; he had hours and hours to be here yet. By the time he left and got back to his apartment, the moment would be gone, as would the darkness. It would not be the same. He needed something to clear his mind, something to sketch besides the swirl of dark images that had somehow invaded his mind since he'd met Hesper. He drew water dripping from rocks, fire, smoke swirling around a figure with black, shiny-looking wings and claws. The drawings filled his sketchpad like fever dreams. Chris hated them, but he could not seem to force himself to stop sketching them.

It was like he imagined being haunted might be.

Forked lightning split the sky, and he shivered a little, his fingers pressed to the cold glass. Yards away at the nurses' station, someone laughed, but he did not hear it. His reflection was a shadow with non-discernible features, seeming to him almost to be someone else entirely. Just another ghost, wishing to be lost in the storm. Wishing never to be found.

Serena felt like she hadn't stopped moving since she had stepped through the doors at six o'clock that morning. It was absolutely amazing just how many things she had to get done in a single day and heaven forbid if anything else come up. Fortunately it wasn't always going to be like this and after a few weeks of settling in, she was sure she'd at least have some time for say...lunch. Or dinner in this case.

With a few files in hand, she made her way to the nurses' station to drop them off and give a few last instructions for the overnight shift. There also might have been a bag of candy involved, but that was strictly between her and the nursing staff. In her experience, too many doctors walked all over their nurses because they didn't have the appropriate title even though without them, a hospital wouldn't be able to function. It was truly ridiculous.

As soon as she was done visiting, she headed down the hall to drop in on one last patient before heading home. That's when she saw him. The corner of her mouth quirked into a smile as she watched him watching the rain and her pace slowed as she neared him. "It's rather hypnotizing isn't it?" she asked as she paused next to him and slipped her hands into the pockets of her blue scrubs. "I've always loved the rain."

A smile was flashed when she turned toward him and she extended her hand. "Serena Grey. I just started yesterday."

Chris had been so lost in the sight and sound of the pounding rain that he hadn't heard her approach. Normally, he was moderately paranoid and tried to be alert to any activity around him, but that hadn't worked out for him this time. He froze for a few seconds, his shoulders stiffening and his eyes taking on that deer-in-headlights cast. He tried to blink it away as he glanced over to see who'd spoken to him.

"Y-yeah, it's--. Me, too." At least he'd managed to say something in response to what she'd said about the rain. Would he get into trouble for goofing off? he wondered. She was clearly a doctor, and she could probably cause problems for him if she told his supervisor. There was something mildly suspicious in his expression as he tried to calm down his rapid heartbeat.

He hesitated when she extended her hand; he was always getting into situations lately with people introducing themselves, wasn't he? He decided to shake it as quickly as possible, since he didn't see any rings on that hand. "Chris Morgan," he said quietly, thankful that nothing but her bare skin touched him, and he didn't experience any flashes.

Serena found it slightly peculiar at his reaction to meeting her but perhaps he just wasn't a people person. Not everyone who worked in a hospital had to be, especially not those that worked the night and third shifts. Heck, there was a fair amount of doctors who weren't exactly all that social and friendly so whatever.

"Nice to meet you Chris," she said with a smile. "I'm slowly trying to meet everyone but between here and The Children's Hospital it's a bit of a daunting task." There were hundreds, possibly thousands of people between the two hospitals but she was determined to try and get to know as many as possible. Working with strangers was all fine and dandy but she did prefer to at least know the names of the people she might get caught in an emergency with.

"Have you worked here long?" Based on his response, Serena would either continue to try and get him to open up or go on about her way. She wasn't about to push him if he wasn't interested in being friendly.

Chris was used to people finding him peculiar, so that wouldn't have been any surprise to him. There were times when he decided he was going to work on the impression that he left with people, but he generally lost the motivation before he could make any lasting changes. Still, he didn't get any sense of threat from her at all, and that was what gave him the incentive to relax a little.

"Nice to meet you, too," he said politely, those traces of the South clearly audible in his accent. She was the friendly sort, then, if she was actively trying to meet that many people. He supposed you'd have to know how to talk to people if you were going to be a doctor. Luckily for him, a lowly Supply Tech didn't have to worry about that sort of thing.

Chris managed a smile and to hold her gaze, something which wasn't all that easy for him. "Almost six months now," he said, sliding his hands into the front pockets of his pants. "I'm, uh... a Supply Tech." Which was probably obvious from what he'd been doing before the rain had distracted him. "Seems like an okay place to work." If he didn't count a co-worker who was trying to drive him nuts, that was.

Her lips eased into a smile when he seemed to make an effort in their meeting. Serena understood that some people just didn't want to talk or get to know a stranger but of course that wouldn't keep her from being disappointed in the end. Fortunately Chris seemed to relax a little and in turn, Serena did the same. She could also appreciate someone pushing through their comfort zone, which it seemed like he was doing. Good for him.

"Six months huh? That's a good amount of time." Usually people could decide on whether they liked a place in a few weeks so for Chris to have stayed that long definitely said something. "I kind of figured." A playful grin danced across her lips as a light chuckle filled the air. "Just okay? I was hoping for "great" but I suppose "okay" isn't all that bad."

"I'm a pediatrician," she said as she spoke again. "Which I'm sure you probably guessed with the whole Children's Hospital mention." See? They could both state the obvious! "Have you spent any time over there or do you primarily just stay over here?" The two hospitals were connected but she wasn't sure just how much of the staff moved around just yet. No time like the present to ask, right?

Talking to strangers generally got Chris into trouble, but in this case he had no sense of even the remotest danger. Serena seemed genuinely like a nice person, someone who cared about others, and that impression was only bolstered when she said she was a children's doctor. It would take someone with extra kindness and extra patience to perform that job, he thought.

Chris didn't feel as if he could say why he really liked the job. For the most part, he had limited interaction with people, spending hours filing charts and making his solitary rounds of supply closets in the wee hours of the morning. Much later, the hospital emptied out, with only the nurses and doctors on duty and the occasional relative of a patient wandering up a hallway. He smiled sheepishly and said, "Most things're okay." Not the brightest thing to say, was it? He could get as tongue-tied talking to an attractive woman as anyone else could.

"I'm just in this buildin'," he mumbled in answer to her question. The list of supply rounds he'd been given had not included Children's, and the file systems were completely separate. "I keep meaning to get over there... sometime."
