Week Five : Monday March 3rd : Evening
Where: The Halls of Old Town Towers
When: Evening
Who: Alex and Nox

Serena was at work, setting up her office or filling out paperwork or something, and then afterwards she was going to go pick up some stuff for the house, so Alex was at home alone, had been all day long, and he was bored out of his mind. He'd slept until noon, unpacked everything that he had brought with him, gotten online for a bit and emailed his friends back home to let them know how he was doing, shaved, showered, gotten dressed in a white wife beater and a pair of worn out jeans, walked the dog a couple of times, gone outside to smoke a couple of times, made some Ramen for lunch, watched a whole lot of daytime television, then proceeded to sit on the sofa and stare out the window as the sun began to set. It was at that point in time when he could take no more.

Sure, the neighbors probably didn't care too much for people wandering about the hallways of the building aimlessly, but that was exactly what he was doing at this point in time. He had first had another cigarette, taken Tony for a short walk, then walked down to the corner market to get a fresh pack of smokes and a 20 ounce Mountain Dew, and now he was just drifting, taking the stairs up and up and up in levels, seeing what the rest of the building looked like.

He didn't know much about building, architecture, whatever, but he knew enough to know that this building was a tiny bit strange. There was something about the way the light filtered in through the windows, something about the smell of the place that made his hair stand up on the back of his neck and make him feel completely uneasy. But it was probably all just in his head. Probably all because he was in a new place for the first time in his life. Probably because whether he would admit it or not, he was a little bit scared about being here, about being on his own, or without his parents anyways, for the first time in his life.

He thought briefly about lighting up a smoke in the hallway but decided against it. This was his sister's home, after all, and he didn't want to get her in bad with the neighbors. Instead he took a healthy swig of his Mountain Dew to sate his nicotine fit for a least a little while longer.

Nox had gotten called in over night, and he'd been at the crime scene since three in the morning. So when he returned to the towers with it just as dark outside as it had been when he left, he realized just how tired he was. Still, there was a lot that needed to be accomplished this evening. He had a stack of old cases that he was determined to comb through this evening, and he refused to eat take out. Nope, cooking would help alleviate the stress of a hard day and get his mind off the grim realities of life.

Taking the stairs two at a time to get that little boost of energy he needed, he soon arrived on his floor. It wasn't unusual to see others in the hallways, but typically the people he saw actually lived on his floor. At the moment, an unfamiliar man was chugging from a green bottle.

Nox pulled his keys out of his pocket and readjusted his bag on his shoulder, hoping the noise would casually get the attention of the man ahead of him. He didn't want to startle the guy and make him choke on his beverage. "Evening," Nox said politely as he walked toward his door, giving the man a smile when he was closer.

At first glance, he wasn't sure what to make of the stranger. The man was dressed in old jeans and a plain tank top. He was scruffy... quite different from Nox's clean cut style, which was all the more defined since he was still dressed for work. The relaxed black suit and tie, somewhat wrinkled from a long day, paired with all the obvious signs of his career. The badge on his hip, the holstered gun just under his breast, and the shoes... criminals always talked about how they could spot a cop in an instant by looking at his shoes. Nox had never understood it.

The sound of keys rattling was enough to get his attention as he took the bottle from his lips and glanced up at the man coming into the hallway. "Sup?" He replied softly, thinking that he should make apologies for being up here on a floor that was not his own. But that could only come out sounding idiotic so it seemed pretty pointless to bother.

Alex was a naturally observant kind of guy. He paid attention to the things around him, the people around him, and it was that natural observance that caused him to notice the little signs that gave the man's profession away. Yeah, you could definitely tell the 5-0 by the shoes that they wore.

"You a cop?" Alex asked, though it came completely out of the blue and after the man was about to walk past and head into his apartment. "Nox?" He asked, knowing that him and his partner both lived in the building though he could definitely see this guy being the type to catch Serena's eye, though not the type to keep it.

Nox wasn't put off by the stranger. He didn't seem dangerous, so Nox was perfectly comfortable with continuing on to his door. But as his keys entered the lock, he paused at the two quick questions thrown his way. Nox turned to look at the man, more carefully this time. He was an observant sort himself, but he was tired right now and really looking forward to dinner and a shower. Having his name spoken by a stranger made Nox shake off the distraction of hunger and reevaluate the scruffy guy. "Yes on both accounts," he said with a degree of suspicion clear in his voice and on his face.

He examined the stranger more carefully this time around. Nox was good with faces, but he couldn't place this one. Still, there was something familiar about him, and clearly the guy knew who Nox was. "Have we met?" he asked cautiously, less certain of his original assessment that this man was of no threat. Maybe the lack of sleep had dulled his senses, turning off his ability to respond to small triggers. What was this random person doing in his hallway?

The guy looked a little freaked out which was enough to make Alex laugh a little as he held out a hand. "Alex. Serena's brother?" He said, and then he laughed again. "She told me you lived here. I saw the shoes and..." He shrugged a bit. "Two plus two equals four." He concluded, dropping his hand after he had shook it.

"Think I was someone here to assassinate you or something?" He asked as he shoved his hands down into his pockets. "Serena's been gone all day. Got bored. Thought I'd explore the place a little," he added with a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Pretty nice place. Glad you told her about it. I know she likes it here."

Nox visibly relaxed, a smile gracing his face once more as he learned the stranger's identity. "Alex. Of course," Nox said with a light chuckle of his own, reaching out to take Alex's hand and give it a firm shake. "Good to finally meet you." And Nox meant that wholeheartedly. He'd been meaning to have Alex and Serena over for dinner, but things kept coming up. This wasn't the most ideal situation to meet the man, but it was better than nothing.

Glancing down at his shoes, and then back to Alex, Nox shrugged a bit sheepishly, "Yeah... I get that a lot... though it's usually perps saying it. Hope I'm not gonna have to arrest you. I don't think Serena would appreciate that," he joked, trying to make up for his suspicion a moment before.

Actually, Nox's mind had gone to a darker place. He worried that maybe Alex was the shadow demon who had roughed up Hesper. "Stranger things have happened," he replied honestly, "And you wouldn't be the first if that was the case. Still, glad you're not a revenge thirsty killer. Just thirsty in general." Nox nodded toward Alex's hand and the beverage in it. "Care for something harder? I was about to have a beer and make dinner. You're welcome to join me. It'll help pass the time until Serena returns."

Alex was glad to see the man relax. So far he didn't seem like a bad fellow and he felt a little bit guilty for making him freak out just a bit, even if it hadn't lasted for long. Perhaps, in the future, he wouldn't just come right out with shit like that even if he was thinking about it. "Nice to meet you too." He replied, and that was the truth. He wanted to meet the man that had made such an impact on his sister, see what the guy was all about.

He laughed heartily as a hand moved up to rub is chin. "Well uhm.. can't say I haven't ever been arrested." He admitted, with a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Call me one of those disenchanted youths." He smirked. "I'd just have to get her to sweet talk ya out of it." A joke he had made to Serena once already.

"I don't envy your job, man." He remarked, having to give him props for that, for taking on a position that left you with so many enemies. He glanced down at his Mountain Dew and laughed. "Yeah, thirsty." He said, and then considered it for a moment. "You sure? I mean, I dunno how late she's gonna be out. Guess I could call and leave her a message, let her know where I am so she won't worry."

Nox raised an eyebrow, and his grin broadened with Alex's confession. He was even more amused by the idea that Serena would have to some how talk Nox out of arresting her brother. "Is that so? I hate to break it to ya, but I'm not corruptible. Not even where your sister is concerned." The only thing that could get Nox to break the rules was if it was necessary to protect those he loved. He liked Serena, but he wasn't about to step around the law to keep her happy.

Shrugging, Nox simply offered, "Someone's gotta do it. Anarchy isn't nearly as entertaining as rebels would like to think. And the world isn't ready to behave without rules." So it was Nox's job to enforce them and lock up the people who didn't. Too many bad people in the world for him to ever have an easy day at the office.

He nodded, "I'm sure," and returned to his door, finally unlocking it and holding it open for Alex. "Make yourself at home. And if there's a mess, I apologize," he quickly added, unsure if Hesper had been around today while he was gone at work. But as he walked inside, place seemed to be just as he left it. "Huh... guess Hesper is out and about," he mumbled, mostly to himself, as he walked into the kitchen and grabbed two beers, quickly handing one to Alex.

Alex laughed at that one. "Damn... sis is losing her touch." He jested and then laughed again. "Nah, I don't get into too much trouble anymore." He shrugged a bit. "Kinda grew out of it." He hadn't really done any sort of street racing for a couple of years now. There just wasn't much of a market for it these days. All the people he used to run with had grown up, gotten married, had a couple of kids, and liked to keep their nose clean. And the younger bunch, well they had other stuff to do besides drive fast cars.

"I guess the law has its place." Of course he wasn't going to say where he thought that place should be and what he thought of the law where he had grown up. They were always off harassing him and never off taking care of the shit that, in his opinion, they needed to take care of. But that was just the way things worked sometimes.

He nodded his head in acceptance and then followed the man into the apartment. It was nice. The taste was a lot like his sister's, a little more minimal however. Upon the invitation, he moved over to have a seat on the couch. He reached hand up to take the beer when it was offered. "Hesper. That's your sister, right? Serena mentioned her too." He said, though he didn't mention the capacity in which her name had come up. He wasn't trying to get off on a bad start or anything.

"The good kids do," Nox added with a nod. Every child went through some sort of rebellious phase, some were just a bit more extreme in the way they went about it. And usually you grew up and got over that compulsion, but not everyone did. For some, a taste was enough to have them hooked, and so began a life of crime. Pity really, because Nox didn't think anyone was born bad.

Nox was about to take a seat and join Alex, but at the question about Hesper, he walked over to a bookshelf and grabbed a photo of the two of them, bringing it back to show Alex. "My twin actually. Been driving me insane since the moment of conception. I was born first... Hesper claims she kicked me out of the womb because I was cramping her style." He chuckled and looked at his sister's picture fondly. "We're total opposites." Looking up at Alex again, he got the feeling that that might be the case with Alex and Serena as well. "From what I've gathered, you and Serena are close. She had nothing but good things to say about you, and I'm sure she's excited to have you here."

Alex laughed. "I dunno that my parents would put me in that good kids category or not." He admitted, cocking his head a bit. "Serena was the good kid. I was the bad seed." He made is sound so dramatic but it wasn't that big of a deal really. He was just.. a boy. And he lived like a boy and did the things that boys around his parts did. His parents got that, for the most part. "Serena did pretty good to keep me mellowed out though, before I had a chance to get too wild."

He was hoping to get to see a picture, see what she looked like since Serena hadn't ever met her before. "She's cute." He said, though she wasn't exactly his type. He never did really care too much for blonds. He was more into brunettes, truth be told. He laughed though, as Nox regaled the tale of their conception. "Sounds like she's a handful." He remarked.

He nodded his head to the question. "We are. I mean, I think we lost that a little when she went away, but we've always tried to stay close, even in spite of that." Alex smiled. "I'm happy to be here. Somebody's gotta look out for her, ya know?" He shrugged his shoulders. "She's had a rough couple of years lately."

"I think when there are multiple siblings in a family... there is always going to be at least one troublemaker. In my family, that's Hesper. She often complains about me being too by the book." He wasn't offended by her comments, far from it. Nox didn't see anything wrong with being a law-abiding citizen. Was he anal about it? Maybe a little. "Serena seems like a wonderful woman. You're lucky to have such a positive influence. She's older, correct?"

Nox had only shown Alex the picture to let him know what Hesper looked like. The mild reaction was just right. Alex didn't seem to want to molest Hesper, but he also didn't seem completely disinterested. It was a perfect response. "Don't let her innocent looks fool you. She's a spitfire. If you see me running around the building like a mad man from time to time, it's likely because she's vanished again. She doesn't like to feel tied down, so she's only an occasional roommate. More like a freeloader actually. She's going to worry me into an early grave." Nox put the photo of Hesper down on the coffee table and resumed drinking his beer, relaxing back into the sofa as he did. He even loosened his tie in an effort to further unwind.

"I understand the feeling... you know, of needing to look out for her. I feel that way too. I think it's common for brothers to feel that way." Though Nox had more reasons to worry probably than most brothers. Hesper was such a wild woman, she lived far too fast, and one day it was going to catch up with her. Nox could only hope that he'd be there to help her when that day came.

It was Alex's other words that troubled Nox. He didn't know Serena all that well, and it would be intrusive and rude to pry, but then why was Alex talking about the 'rough couple of years'? "She seems to be doing well here. Hopefully whatever trouble she experienced is over now. She's a real joy to be around, and it would be a shame if the light inside her faded."

"Yeah.. Serena said that about you too." Alex remarked with a bit of a laugh. "We were joking about my not so law abiding days after she told me you were a cop. That's where the whole her talking you out of it thing came from." He gave a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Said she doubted she could do that but she wouldn't put it past me to have her try." He laughed again, taking a quick swig of the beer. He nodded his head to the question. "Parents always said I was pay back for them having such a good kid the first time around."

Alex shook his head with a grin. "She don't look innocent. You can tell. It's in the eyes." Girls like her had this certain look, almost like a caged animal or something of the sort. Like the smile and the sweetness was just an act. He could see that in the picture. And she did look interesting, even if she wasn't typically his type of girl. "Nothing wrong with that. Don't think I will ever be ready to be tied down my own self." Maybe if Natalia had come back, but she hadn't. That ship had sailed. And now he had to find something else to base his life around.

"Nah." He shook his head. "I don't think you have to worry about that with Serena. I mean... she's.. not quite as bright now as she used to be, not bright like bright but, you know what I mean, but I don't see her ever getting all.. You know?" He asked. "I mean she's got her work and if anything, I think that'll always put a smile on her face."

"She said that too?" he blushed a little. Great. Serena thought he was too tightly wound as well. That was a great first impression to make. Though, maybe it wasn't so bad... having her think he was the kind of guy who played by the rules. Who knew? He was still getting to know Serena, so he wasn't sure what she was into. Maybe she was one of the few women who actually liked nice guys.

Nox glanced at the photo again, trying to see what it was that Alex saw. Maybe Nox was just blind because it was his sister, but he didn't see anything in particular in her eyes. "I suppose," he offered with a shrug. He probably knew Hesper better than anyone, at least who she really was on the inside... even if he didn't know all her secrets. But wasn't that the way families were? You didn't know everything they did, but you knew their souls. That was what really mattered.

"Not looking to settle down, eh? Well, you're young still. You've got time." Nox had time as well, lots of it. He was of the attitude that when the right woman came along, he'd just know it. If that happened tomorrow, great, if not, he could wait. He was content with his life the way it was, but if someone wonderful entered the equation, he'd do whatever necessary to make her the center of his world... hopefully she'd be ok with Hesper's insanity causing a constant disruption to their lives.

Nox chuckled and nodded, "Yeah, I get what you're saying about being bright. And she does seem a little more radiant when she's around children." He took a sip from his beer before setting it down, "I bumped into her at the aquarium... we were both people watching, a little girl specifically. Really adorable child. Serena really lights up in their presence. I'm sure she's an amazing doctor."

Alex smiled at the blush. "Don't worry. I don't think it bothers her none about you." Though he did think that the guy was stuck in the friend zone which was rather unfortunate. Maybe, just maybe, he could help him out with that, since he did seem like an okay fellow. He would have to get to know him a bit more before he made that determination. So far, however, so good.

"I bet she's a sweet girl underneath that. Most girls like that are. They just... something happens in life, makes them feel the constant need to push boundaries, to prove themselves, to do anything but settle down." He said with a small shrug of his shoulders. He definitely knew that type. "Hell, some guys are like that too. Guess we just need someone to stick around long enough, through all the crazy shit, so we know we can trust em." He took another swig of his beer.

"I was. She went away to college, married some... I dunno.. lawyer or something." He shrugged again and took another drink of his beer. "Meantime I don't guess there's any harm in having fun." Even though his sister seemed to think so, seemed anxious about him entering into the Seattle dating scene. Sure, it was different than Lake Tahoe, but it couldn't really be that much different than Lake Tahoe.

"So I take it you like kids then?" A rare trait in guy's these days almost. "Wanna settle down, have a couple?" He asked, knowing that that was something that Serena had always really hoped for. "I dunno that I would make a good parent. I guess.. I got different ideas about the way parenting should be. Don't think you should shelter your kids as much as our parents did. I mean... they're gonna learn things eventually, I think it might be best to go ahead and teach them so you don't have to worry about someone else showing them wrong." He shrugged.

"You know we should all get together sometime, one evening when you're not working and she's not working and Hesper's around." Yes, so far, so good. Now to work on seeing how well Serena and Nox meshed together. "Maybe go have some food, catch a movie, and then, I dunno, grab some ice cream somewhere or something afterwards."

Alex's smile was reassuring. It was always a plus to make a good impression on the family. Though, probably didn't make much of a difference. He'd thought his trip to the game with Serena was a 'date', but while the two had a great time, and ended the evening well when he dropped her off at the airport, there didn't seem to be much interest on her part. Yeah, he was definitely in the friend zone, and while Nox was attracted to Serena, he didn't have a problem with just being her friend.

"Hesper has been like this from the start. And I'm pretty sure she'll always be like this." It wasn't something Nox could explain to Alex, because such information was likely to blow the guy's mind. What was Nox supposed to say? Hesper was completely normal for a demon, and it was really Nox who was the odd man out? Yeah, that would go over really well.

Nox nodded in understanding, "It happens. I was with someone a while ago, thought there was a future, but there wasn't." He'd moved on since then, gotten over it, but Nox could clearly remember just how heartbroken he'd been at the time. He just tried not to think about it anymore. That part of his life was over now.

"Absolutely. I love the family I have, but there's lots of room for it to grow. I'm definitely planning to have kids one day." Question was, would he be having children with another demon or a human? It was scary to think about the idea of finding happiness with a human, because such a relationship would be fleeting, and Nox wasn't sure how he felt about falling in love with one of them only to see her grow old and die long before he did. "I think it's hard for any parent to let go, but there comes a time when it's necessary." Nox's parents hadn't been overly eager to let him run after Hesper, but it was the right thing to do. Though he was sure they hated that he didn't return with her as he'd promised.

Nox smiled at the idea, "I'd like that. I can't speak for Hesper, but I can probably come up with a way to convince her to come along." Just tell her that a good looking young man would be there, and Hesper would likely chomp at the bit, ready to see if Alex was worth corrupting. She was terrible. Truly.

If Nox had told him that he was a demon, he would have laughed at first and then questioned the man's sanity. That was just the way he was. Shit like that didn't exist. It was all figurative. Stories that parents told their kids to keep them in line. "Maybe she will, maybe she won't. You love her anyways though, right? So that's all that really matters." He concluded with a shrug of his shoulders.

Alex did not like to talk much about Natalia. He wasn't even sure why he had brought her up at all. Sometimes it was just nice to have someone to chat with about things that didn't get all teary eyed and sentimental. He had missed his guy friends since he had gotten here, even though he hadn't been here that long. However, in spite of Nox being a cop, he seemed like an okay sort of guy, and he was thinking that he might just have found somebody that he could have that comradeship with again.

He nodded his head to the remark about family and filed it away for later. "We should do it. Maybe later this week if Serena can manage. If not, next week?" He suggested, taking another swig of his beer. "Give me a chance to see a little bit more of the city."

Nox had only ever 'come out' to one human before, and the results were somewhat unfortunate. After that, he decided he wouldn't be telling anyone else of his demon status, not unless it was someone who needed to know, and Alex definitely did not. It was the sort of thing he would have likely told Hale, if the man had been human. Fortunately, Hale was another supernatural, which made their partnership work much better perhaps than some others in the station. When you shared a mutual secret like that, you really had to depend on that other person for more than just your life when shots were being fired. You needed to know that the other guy would keep your secret, and Nox and Hale could trust each other completely in that regard.

"I'll always love Hesper. Nothing could change that. I think even for families who have been through hell," he paused slightly, somewhat amused by the unintended, and likely unrecognized, pun, "That love remains. You may never want to see them again, despise them for what they've put you through, but it's nearly impossible to erase the love you feel toward blood. I don't think it's something that can be undone easily." It was much like a woman loving a man who beat her. Feelings like that were hard to overcome, even when it was for your own good.

Alex didn't seem to want to linger on the topic of lost love, and that was fine by Nox. He didn't really care to dwell on his past either. Some things were better left behind. It had taken a long time to recover, and he didn't want to relapse.

"I usually have an open schedule... I work mostly on a need basis, whenever there's a case. So, ask your sister when she's available, and we'll get together. I'll chain up Hesper... keep her from running away for the next week."

Nox finished off his beer and set it on the coffee table. He was enjoying this time spent with Alex. It seemed they'd get along just fine in the future, and Nox would definitely be inviting the man out with the other guys sometime. It could be difficult moving to a new city, and Nox figured Alex could use some friends. "I hate to kick you out, but I have some cases to review, and then I'm gonna crash. We'll get together soon though... and it was great meeting you, Alex." Nox rose from his seat and offered his hand as well as a smile.

Alex laughed at the pun even if he didn't know why it was so funny to Nox in particular. He nodded his head. "That's for sure. I know I put my parents through hell when I was younger and they still love me in spite of it." He chuckled. "Sometimes I can't help but wonder why but I guess.. family, ya know?" He shrugged. He was glad his sister was well put together though. He would hate to have her a mess. He was mess enough for the both of them truth be told.

He nodded his head, feeling that the conversation was about to wrap up on both ends. There was only so much two strangers could sit around and talk about, especially when they were men. "Sounds good, sounds good." He swigged down the rest of his beer and set the bottle down on the table, wiping the moisture from the bottle off on his jeans.

He held up a hand and shook his head. "No problem. I was about to say I needed to go anyways. Serena should be home soon and she might freak out if I'm not there." He said, moving to his feet. "I swear, she acts like I can't take care of myself in this city. You'd think it was infested with.. I dunno.. fucking serial killers and werewolves or something the way she acts.
