Week Four: Thursday
Who: Hesper and Nox
Where: Room E4 Old Town Towers
When: Thursday Evening

It had been a few days since she had been home. Really it was so hard to just stay at home, and her most recent job had been on the other side of the state. Really it was unavoidable. Though this did normally mean that once Nox saw her that he would go all mother hen and she would get smothered to death. Though as aggravating as it was she still allowed her brother to do it because it made him feel better about things, especially with her fondness for running off without him. She half wondered if he thought she was going to bolt completely like she had from hell with barely a word to him.

Considering the past few weeks she was almost wanting to. Seattle was a lovely place but she had gotten used to not having to deal with demons really. She had definitely not had to deal with someone being faster than her. Even most older vampires she could handle herself around, she did keep her own senses wary enough that for the most part it was pretty easy. But demons... they were an entire different thing. And if one was being hunted and jumpy enough at one as young as herself, there were things to worry about.

Walking through the quiet apartment, she walked into the kitchen and took a beer out of the fridge. Opening it she took a pull and leaned against the counter, shaking her head. This did not bode well for her and certainly not for Nox. Demons that hunted other demons were things to stay away from. She knew all about them from her days down under. Having a taste for the powerful lead a girl to hanging around with those types. And she saw what those kinds of hunters did. While titillating when it was not happening to you, it was horrifying when it was.

She doubted Nox would have heard anything but he damn well needed to know something like this. Really she should have been telling him about it sooner but that was not something to ponder on now. All she had to do now was wait until her brother got home. There was plenty in the apartment to keep her occupied till then, even if it was sadly lacking of someone pretty to play with.

When Nox arrived back at the Towers, he went about his normal routine. He exchanged a bit of small talk with those in the lobby area, he checked the mail, and he took the stairs up to his apartment. He was exhausted, not just from work, but from worry.. as was the usual case when Hesper went missing for a few days. Why she did this to him, he didn't know. In actuality it probably had nothing to do with him. Hesper was a free spirit. She needed to feel like she had nothing tying her down. Nox was the exact opposite. He liked feeling connected to a place, being able to call Seattle his 'home'. And he loved feeling connected to his family and friends. Nox had a strong desire to remain grounded. The comfort he got from it was disrupted each and every time Hesper ran off, and it was only restored when she returned.

That was why he grew nervous as he approached the door to his apartment, but his nerves were instantly settled as he noticed that the door was unlocked... by a key. He smiled and quickly opened it, dropping his belongings on the floor as the door shut on its own behind him. He rushed into the apartment and found Hesper sitting on the couch. "Text me... call me... email me... SOMETHING, HES!" he said in an exasperated voice, dropping down onto the couch beside her and wrapping his arms around her, "I missed you."

By the time he had gotten in she had finished her drink and moved into the living room. She was antsy more than anything for him to get home as she mulled things over in her head. Though she would never admit it she liked having Nox to lean back on. There really was no one else that she felt that she could trust with anything. Not that she did trust him with everything in practice, but if she had to she knew he was the only person that she really could rely on without any doubt or suspicion.

"Where's the fun in that?" she asked mildly as she was soon smothered by a hug. Really she had no idea how her family had been so 'lovie dovey' compared with the rest of hell. Nox was about as much like a demon as a T-rex was like a chicken. The connection was possibly there but it was so convoluted no one would have seen it. "And of course you missed me, I'm the shining high point of your life."

Nox rested back into the couch, keeping an arm draped over Hesper's shoulders, as if to make sure she didn't run off again (though, he knew she would eventually). All was right with the world again having her home safe. As usual, she'd returned without any warning, without any explanation for where she'd been, and without any injuries... which was a huge relief. "You really do enjoy making me worry to the point I'm almost ill, don't you?" One might think over time Nox would have gotten used to her disappearing acts, that he would have learned to be calm while she was away, but it was just as hard each and every time. He really was convinced he'd be called to identify her in the morgue one day, and if that happened, he had no idea how he'd move on with his own life.

"So... darling sister of mine who has absolutely no regard for my feelings... how long do I get to keep you this time? Wait, don't answer that, because if you give me a timeline, I'm likely to attach you to one of those heavy duty chains with a stake in the ground... you know, like they do with dangerous dogs." He gave her a side ways glance that showed off a toothy grin.

Looking to the table, he looked for any signs that she'd eaten, "Did you have dinner yet? I'll make you something." He squeezed her shoulders and kissed the side of her head before hopping up and heading to the kitchen.

Hesper did often wonder why he took these disappearances of hers so seriously. Ever since she was old enough to wander off she had and Seattle was a great deal safer than Hell had been by a long shot. True he did spend most of his time dealing with the 'bad' parts of it, what with murder and all that being bad. Still he knew well enough that she could take care of herself and that there never was any need to worry. "You mean you didn't get ill this time? Really, I'll have to try harder next time. My not being here should severely affect your health." she teased, even though she still did not understand it.

Smirking she jabbed him in the side playfully. "I've plenty regard for your feelings. I'm just trying to toughen you up so you're not such a bleeding heart. And if you're going to go for the chain then you might as well just grab one of the ones I have in my room. They'd enjoy getting the use, I'm sure." Did she have chains in her room, she really could not remember. There were a lot of things in there that most people would probably question. Though if Nox had ever stumbled upon any he certainly never told her.

"Bleck!" she cried playfully, batting at his head as she tried not to laugh. "You're going to kill me with all this affection shit!" She watched him head into the kitchen and really could no think of a way to bring up what she needed to talk to him about. Getting up she followed him and leaned in the doorway of the kitchen. Might as well be blunt about it, it was what she was good at. "Nox, how many other Shadow demons are you aware of in Seattle?"

He looked at her seriously for a moment, trying to make her understand, "Truthfully, I did vomit the other night when I got a call from the morgue with a vague description of a victim that was much too close to matching your description." He looked her in the eyes, hoping she'd get it for once. "I've seen too many pretty young women dead on the slab, Hes. I know you're tough, but no one is invincible. So... yeah... I worry." His voice was a bit sullen, fearful. But he had plenty of reason to be afraid.

He was shaken from his state with a cringe at her mention of chains in her room. "I don't ever look in your drawers, and I don't plan to! Seriously, Hesper!" he complained, shivering a bit again. Creeped him out beyond belief. "And I'm not a bleeding heart... so stuff it." Total lie, he knew it, but he wouldn't admit to it, not to Hesper, not to anyone.

Nox was searching the fridge for something he could put together quickly when Hesper asked a question that seized hold of his attention. He shut the door and spun around. He stared at her suspiciously and answered slowly, cautiously, "I don't know... why?"

"Oh come on." she drawled, rolling her eyes at him. Really he was so unreasonable sometimes. Just because she ran off did not mean that she would automatically end up dead. "You know full and well that if I did end up on a slab you'd be more explaining away, oh, why does your sister have bloody wings sprouting out of her back. Unless that's on the description I really doubt you'd need to worry at all." She did not get his constant fear that she was going to be dead at any given moment. Given that logic she would be dead a thousand times over.

Grinning wickedly she leaned closer to him. "Maybe you should, give you a nice shock to the system and you won't be such an uptight ass anymore!" Laughing she shook her head. "And don't go lying saying you're not one, an uptight ass or a bleeding heart. Might as well tattoo it. Would make girls think you're edgy."

But with that one question all playful air left the room and she tilted her head back slightly, almost thoughtfully. There were a few ways she could go about this really, and she would rather it not end up messy. "Because last I checked we were the only ones. That was until one seemed to think I was sent after him and tried to jump me the other day." She was still sore about that. Bastard did not even pull the slip over her and still thought he was so much better because she was young.

Nox sighed heavily and scooted away from her slightly, "Nevermind." She just didn't get it, and he didn't think she ever would. It was apparently an anxiety he alone felt. Hesper didn't seem to worry about Nox in the slightest, if anything she seemed to take him for granted. He would always be here waiting for her to return. He would always look after her when she needed it. And he'd always be prepared to do whatever it took to keep her safe. Nox wasn't one to break or even bend the rules, but he'd do anything necessary to protect his twin.

His nose crinkled a bit, "I'm not getting a tattoo. I don't see the point to them at all. Why would I intentionally mutilate my body for decorative purposes?" His skin looked just fine as it was. Tattoos were the sort of thing people got when they wanted to be noticed, and Nox liked blending in with the crowd. It was why he worked so hard to keep his claws and wings hidden. "Besides... I'm not interested in finding a girl who is looking to an edgy man." He was interested in Serena.

Nox got very upset suddenly. "Jumped you? You were attacked by another demon? The other day?! Why didn't you tell me about it!" he ranted, losing his cool exterior, which really only ever happened around Hesper. "You have to tell me everything... where, when... I should call our sketch artist, you can describe your attacker and then we'll know who we're looking for. Hale could help me plant evidence on the guy or something, give us a reason to arrest him." You knew Nox was being overprotective when he talked about doing something illegal.

Hesper did take Nox for granted, but she could not help it really. Nox never did anything that was dangerous and he never ran off. If he did somehow disappear her reaction would probably end up with several people dead as she tried to find him. Nox never made her worry because she knew him, better than anyone ever could. For her to be worried would mean something was very wrong. Unless that happened she was perfectly content with the way things were.

"For sex, duh." she said as if it was the simplest thing in the world, which it pretty much was. Sex was as base as you could get outside of hunger and say breathing when it came to humans. Not that tattoos for them were practical anyway. "And of course you don't, you want some boring old girl who doesn't do anything surprising at all. And probably is ugly as a hellhound's ass but has a really great personality."

And this was why she waited to tell him. She needed to be calm enough about it to be able to be calm with him. He was already going on about planting evidence, which she really loved and would do on numerous occasions if she could, but really he was being an idiot. "Right, put a search out for a shadow demon, makes a lot of sense. So does trying to arrest one." her sarcasm was too thick to be mistaken for anything else. "The bastard didn't hurt me, but he was being hunted. Which means we might have demon hunters in Seattle before very long, and I don't like the sound of that all too much, and neither would your department."

Nox got slightly snippy then, "She's not ugly!" It was out there before he could stop it. He'd not told Hesper about Serena, though he blamed that entirely on Hesper, because she hadn't been around. How was she supposed to tell his sister he was interested in someone if she was off doing... well, he didn't want to think about what she was doing. In fact, Nox did his very best to avoid thinking about what his sister did whenever she wasn't with him, because it likely involved sex and all sorts of illegal stuff. "I mean, you know what I mean..." He'd dug a hole for himself, and he wasn't sure how to get out of it. Because if he said anything about Serena, Hesper would be all over it, and he didn't know if he was ready to handle all that just yet. He wasn't even sure he was ready to date again.

Nox really wasn't thinking clearly, because he was already thinking about packing up and moving. "Demon hunters..." he mumbled, starting to pace. His fingers scratched back through his hair then rubbed at his neck and shoulders. He was deep in thought, trying to decide what they should do about this. When demons came up from hell looking to kill one of their own, it was usually due to some sort of blood feud, and that wasn't anything Nox wanted to get involved with. "You can't go back to where you met him. Period." He looked up at his sister, "It was in the underground, wasn't it? Hesper, you can't go down there, it's not safe. And this just proves it."

She? Well that was interesting. She meant that she was a person, as in a real person. Not that Nox was ever the kind to make up a girlfriend or the such but Hesper was very usde to her brother telling her everything. However she had not been around lately. This would have to be something that she pried into later, but there was something that they needed to talk about now. Taunting and congratulations (if they were in order) could wait until other more important things were discussed. While it was an interesting slip up, it was certainly not as important as possible demon hunters coming to Seattle or already being there.

Hesper was fine with him pacing, with him trying to figure out what he thought of all this. However when it turned to him telling her where she could not go her temper boiled and and walked over to him. "Oh you're not going to tell me where I can and cannot go. Chances are the idiot won't even got back into the underground, the idiot should not have even been there to begin with." she said loudly, jabbing Nox in the chest in annoyance. "I happen to like being somewhere where I won't frighten all the little humans, so hell no am I staying away."

Ok, so maybe there was a perk to this whole demon hunters thing. It meant Nox didn't have to be all awkward and discuss his interest in Serena. Not that he was totally off the hook, not even close, because Hesper would be all over it once they had settled the much more important issue at hand. How to settle it was the question.

They'd never get anything accomplished if they started fighting, so he decided not to pursue the whole banning her from going to the underground issue. "Fine," he said with a sigh. There was no way to get her to change, he knew that, but he continued to try just the same.

He took a few deep breaths and reached into the fridge again, grabbing two beers and handing her one. "Come on..." he offered, walking over to the couch to sit down. He needed to calm down so he could think rationally, think like a detective not a brother. "Tell me exactly what happened."

Settling it certainly was the question. Hesper's normal response to anything that threatened her or her brother was to simply kill it. However demons were a very different story. They were old, much older than her and Nox if they were sent out to kill other demons. While there was no reason to believe that they might get in the way of this, there was always that chance. Especially since the runaway had been in contact with her.

He left the underground issue alone, which was a good thing. She was their eyes and ears to the going ons down there since he avoided the place completely it seemed like. However it was part of the city and a part that had to be reckoned with, not just ignored. Especially in something like this, people down there would be the first ones to hear really about anything strange in the supernatural world.

Taking the beer she followed him over to the couch and sat down next to him. Everyone always felt Nox was the calm one but when it came to her he always seemed to go off the deep end at a tip of a hat. It made her wonder sometimes what would actually happen if he ever did have to get her out of a very deep situation. "I was walking in the underground and I felt something following me." she said simply, opening her bottle. "I knew it was following me and he came out of the shadows and grabbed me, but had he tried anything I'd have had a knife into his stomach. Started going on about someone now being so low as to send babies after him. Bastard really thinks damn high of his age."

Nox was the calm one, almost always. It took a lot to rattle him... well, it did when things didn't involve Hesper. She changed the equation drastically. If she was in danger, it was much harder for him to keep his cool. He didn't know what he would do if anything ever happened to her, and he really didn't like thinking about it, even though he often did.

He sipped from his beer and stared at nothing at all. His eyes were unfocused, but his ears were keen. Nox was taking in everything Hesper was saying about this shadow demon. Taking another sip, he let her words absorb along with the alcohol. "Alright, so it sounds like this guy is completely paranoid. Probably sensed you were another shadow demon and felt it was better to be safe than sorry, so he jumped you. And I'm getting you a stun gun first thing in the morning... maybe a real gun too," he added before continuing right on like he'd not said anything out of the ordinary. "How did things end... how did you convince him you weren't a threat?" Hopefully the guy would leave them alone and go about his business, but that wouldn't be the end of this issue. They'd need to find out who was after this shadow demon and make sure it didn't cause trouble for other people. If it stayed contained, then fine, but such issues rarely did.

Hesper could not even fathom something happening to Nox. It was simply beyond her capability to imagine him being seriously hurt or worse. While she did go out of her way to protect him if she needed to, it was more from the need to protect him than from any feeling that something could really happen to him. She was still very childlike in that, it was just unfathomable.

"I already have a real gun." she said petulantly. Actually she had more like five different guns. They were such a useful invention. So much havoc in such a small space. "And yeah, he was paranoid as all fuck. Like some crazy hippie who got LSD laced in his joint. But eventually the crazy realized that no, I hadn't a fucking clue who he was and couldn't really give a shit either. He just left, after going on about how I was sooo cocky for my age. Should have stabbed the bastard."

It was unfathomable because Nox had done a good job over the years keeping himself out of trouble. He really didn't give Hesper any reason to worry about him. Maybe that was why she left all the time... out of boredom. And when she returned, she simply nagged him about is lack of a sex life. She didn't have anything else to complain about.

Nox's attention was momentarily caught, "When did you get a gun? And where'd you get it?" He should have been the one to hook her up, not some shady dealer on the streets. He doubted the weapon she carried was legal. "I wanna see it. I'll run a check on the serial number and then find a way to make sure it's legally registered to you. Last thing you need is to get caught with it, have it confiscated, and then let some lackey in the evidence locker discover it's a murder weapon from another case."

Frowning, Nox rubbed his hand over his face then took a long drink from his beer. He sighed after a few moments of quiet reflection. "I thought we could stay here at least another ten years before needing to move and get new identities." His voice was calm and somewhat soft. "I'm going to look into this guy, figure out who he is. If things look like they might get messy... might lead to us being exposed... we'll have to leave," he said with resolution, turning in his seat and setting his drink down. His eyes fixed on Hesper. "We can't stay if it means people finding out what we are." He'd felt that he could maybe get by another ten years before people started to wonder why he looked so good for his age, but perhaps that was pushing it. The age thing wasn't even a huge issue. Every single day there were at risk of being discovered. "I'm going to talk to Hale about all this. He'll help us."

Hesper had plenty to complain about when it came to her brother, but they were normal sibling complaints. They were the same complaints that any sibling could have of another, especially if the other had a tendency to be an uptight prick who was way too attached to the rules. Though she lived almost for giving him reasons to complain, and he really did not even know the half of it.

Looking up at the ceiling innocently, she shrugged. "Now I can't have you go running the serial number on it, if you do you'll get all mad at me. I'm pretty sure it's a federal crime to take a gun as a sex trophy. But I mean if yours went missing you'd totally blame me first, and they're just so nice, a lot nicer than other ones." Hesper really did have a problem with stealing, but come on, if a police style gun was used and one of her targets happened to actually be found, would throw the target completely off anyone like her.

"Yeah I know all that, Nox." she replied, rolling her eyes in annoyance. "Not something I'd really look forward to. But hell even I don't want to get caught up in a demon hunt. That's just fucking stupid." Sighing she looked at him. "Your pretty partner isn't going to be able to do much to help you know. My people would know more if he's been hanging around the underground than yours would."

Nox's eyes went wide as he started to put together the pieces of what she was saying. Federal crime. Yours went missing. They're so nice. It all fit together, especially the 'sex trophy' part. "You took William's weapon?! Hesper!" He wasn't the sort of man to use profanities, but he was on the verge of it at the moment. She was completely insane for lifting a piece off an officer. And Nox was personally insulted that she'd do something like that to his former partner, the man who had trained Nox when he first became a detective. "Do you know how much heat he took for losing his weapon? They put him on probation. He probably even knows it was you and didn't tell anyone out of embarrassment or wanting to protect you and I. How could you do that to him?" Nox had been furious when he found out the two were sleeping together, and it caused serious strain on his partnership. It was probably for the best that Nox had been assigned a new partner.

"Don't underestimate Hale or me. Just because we don't hang out in the Underground doesn't mean we're not often there for work, or have contacts." It was one of the necessary evils when you were a detective, to have contacts that were perhaps guilty of their own crimes. But, you had to weigh the severity of their lawbreaking and decide if the information they had was valuable enough to overlook the other stuff they did. Nox had a handful of petty thieves he went to from time to time for information. He never paid them, and he'd made it clear if he had solid evidence against them, he'd arrest them, but there was an unstable truce that stayed in place in the meantime. "Hale is one of the few people we can trust."

Leaning back on the couch she looked up at him innocently. "Is this the part where I'm supposed to start feeling guilty? I can't remember." Really, it was not like it mattered to her if the guy was put on probation. Bill had been at least smart enough that if he had thought it was her that he was never going to get it back anyway. She honestly just did not care. The gun was what she had wanted at the time and so she took it. "Not like it even matters now. I'm very careful with it." Just like any of her other guns. Though most of the people that had owned those pretties weren't going to be using a gun again, ever.

"But if I can't underestimate the cops, who can I underestimate? Maybe the clergy, but with all the little boy jokes that gets just a bit old." Sighing she looked at him. She really was freaking out as much as him, but whenever Nox panicked she found it easier to just bitch at him. If she was not so self absorbed she would have wondered just why he put up with her. "And I know he is your little trust buddy. But neither of you seem all too fond of dealing with the supernaturals down there. You start asking questions and you might end up tipping off someone you don't want to."

"Yes, it's the part where you're supposed to feel guilty. But that would require you to have a conscience, and I've never seen any indication that you possess one, so I won't be holding my breath." Yep, there was some bitter sarcasm in his voice, something that really only happened when he was with Hesper. It was strange, all the non-golden boy things she'd wished he'd embody, did tend to rear their ugly heads when she was around. Hesper brought out both the best and worst in Nox, but he figured that was typical among siblings.

He dropped the discussion of the gun, because he had no idea where she was hiding it, and there was no way she'd tell him or hand it over. With Hes, it was finders keepers, and that gun was as good as gone now. He just hoped she meant it when she said she'd be careful with it. If she was ever caught with the weapon, Nox would likely be the one to take the heat.

"You make it sound like this is my first day on the job, Hes. I'm not an idiot, I know how to carry out an undercover investigation. Just let me do what I do, alright? And you try to stay out of trouble... stay out of the Underground too. Going down there again right now might make the guy think it was a bad idea to have let you go before."

He got up off the couch and put his beer bottle down, walking to his room. Since he'd started this whole conversation with Hesper, he'd not had a chance to change out of his work clothes. That was quickly remedied as he shrugged them off and threw them in the hamper, trading them in for some navy mesh pants he'd be sleeping in... eventually. There was a lot left to do before he could catch a few hours in bed.

Emerging from his room again, he walked into the kitchen. Earlier, he'd been willing to cook something up for Hesper, now the mood had passed. Cereal was about the extent of his energy right now, so he poured himself a bowl and ate it while standing. "You gonna be around for a few days this time?" he asked between bites.

"Right, of course I'll stay out of the underground, brother dear." she drawled as he walked off. Whoever his contacts were it was doubtful they were as deep in as her own did. Part of the problem with being law enforcement is that all the really good contacts were wanted by them. There was no way she could stay out of the underground anyway, there was work to be done after all. She could not just let finances get away from her. Plus she got bored when she had no work to do.

Watching him walk out of his room she got up and followed after him into the kitchen. Apparently hopes that he was going to actually make something for her were a bit shot. Really she should have waited to bring up that news until after he had made her something to eat. She was pretty damn hungry after all, what with him interrogating her and all.

There was a large temptation to make a remark on his comment about his experience with the underground. She knew he did work down there. With his job it was a bit unavoidable if a death was even reported down there, which most of them were not. Going over to him she wrapped her arms around him loosely and hung on him like an annoying child. "Oh I don't know, daddy. If you're that lonely I could stay around the old folks home to visit you a few more days."

Nox nudged the cereal box toward her, "Help yourself," he mumbled while chewing, a note of humor in his voice. Served her right for giving him such grief. Yes, he was a good cook, and yes, he was generally more than happy to make her something to eat, but she was being a pain right now, and that meant she could forage for her own food.

He rolled his eyes as she clung to him, then cringed a bit when she called him 'daddy', "Ok, that's just creepy, Hes. Never call me that again." He wiggled out of her grasp, just as she often did when he gave her hugs upon returning home from one of her long absences. "And I'm not lonely. I just worry about you when you aren't here. It's not like you're the only person I spend time with."

"Oh I'll help myself allright." she drawled, looking at the hateful box of cereal. Even she could make something better than cereal if she was not so damn lazy when it came to anything domestic. "I'll help myself to your damn lucky charms." Why did she keep him around when he did not service her whim for actual food? That was something she was going to have to think on.

"That's not creepy at all." she said cheerfully, pushing herself up onto the counter. "Creepy would be making the incest joke that I almost made but decided against, even though it's alway fun to see your reaction to those." Kicking out at him, since he deserved it after not making her something to eat, she smirked evilly. "Oh that's right, you've got a girlie that you're stalking around. The one who's 'not ugly'. Fucked her yet?"

Nox rolled his eyes again, "Jeez... if you really object to cereal, I'll make you something." He caved so easily when it came to Hesper. After taking a few more bites of his cereal, he set the bowl down and started to search the fridge for something he could make for her. "How do you feel about grilled chicken and maybe a salad? I think I've got enough lettuce." He pulled out the supplies and set them on the counter, then turned on the stovetop to get it good and warm while he set about preparing the chicken.

He watched her sitting on the counter, kicking her legs around, as he continued to work on preparing her meal. Nox glanced up at her in a slightly annoyed fashion when she realized she'd forgotten all about questioning him on the woman of interest. "I'm not stalking her. And don't speak so crudely! It's not like like. We met the other day when I took a break from work at the aquarium. She's a doctor, just accepted a job at the children's hospital. She's very nice, and she's living here in the Towers, so if you see her, you better be polite!" Nox scowled a little in warning. "Her name is Serena."

"I object to cereal, you bet I do." she grumbled, sulking playfully before reaching out and pushing his shoulder with a smirk. "Get on with making my dinner then. It's why I keep you around, you know. Haven't found a pretty boy that cooks better than you yet or I'd have you out on the street!" Well, probably not, she was rather used to having her brother around on the occasions that she decided to be around really. Though he was a pretty damn good cook.

"Can speak anyway I fucking like, thank you." she said haughtily, crossing her arms and looking over at him with a playful raised eyebrow. "And oh, an aquarium you say? Damnit Nox, can't you meet girls in a normal place? Like a bar or an escort service? Might as well have met her in church, though I'd like to hear how you managed to get into one if you did." laughing she tilted her head back. "Oh I'll be polite. Lift my pinkie up and everything."

"Have me out on the street?! Hes, I'm the one who pays the rent here. Remember? And you really don't have to try so hard to make it seem like you don't care. I know you do. I've known you since forever, and this whole facade you've constructed for yourself, well, I see through it. There is a good person inside there somewhere, as much as you try to hide it." He looked at her sternly. She could deny it all she wanted, but it wouldn't work on Nox. She loved him just as much as he loved her, their ability to drive each other insane would never change their feelings.

He glared at her slightly, "What's wrong with the aquarium? I like it there, and so does she! It's peaceful. Besides, I think it would be nearly impossible to meet someone worth my time at a bar, and escorts don't count as dates." Not that he and Serena were 'dating'. He wasn't sure what was going on. They'd had a good time at the game, but he wasn't sure if she thought of it as a date, even if he had. "She's got a younger brother and a dog. Surely you could find a way to get along with all of them."

Pushing the meat around in the frying pan, then flipping it, he was quiet for a moment. "Not sure if she's actually interested in me. Maybe I just fail at dating in general."

"You only pay the rent because I'm too lazy to." she said, waving him off flippantly. "I'd find a rich boy who could cook!" Looking over at him she laughed brightly and waggled her eyebrows playfully. "Oh yeah, I'm a wonderful person. I save puppies and little orphans all the time. And I go to church on Sunday and not just to hit on the young priest at St. Augustine's."

"The only place fish belong is on a plate. Why just look at them, they're fucking fish for crying out loud! And escorts totally count as dates where you're concerned, you probably wouldn't even have sex with them if you did hire one." she scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Whoopdeedoo, a dog AND a younger brother. I'm so excited, really. Just struggling to contain my delight."

Watching him, she did feel bad. Nox was a wonderful guy, the kind most of these human girls adored really. But he had such fucking trouble just letting it all go. It was not like he had to worry about one hurting him. If one did they would have to deal with Hesper, and the fact that she would rip their heart out... literally. "Course you fail. Have you even ever been on a day? And going out with puppyboy doesn't count, no matter how cute he looks in uniform."

"I've given you a place to call home. That's worth a lot more than the cost of rent." Nox looked at her seriously and slid the sizzling piece of chicken off the pan and onto the plate, garnishing it, and then handing it to her. "Not like you appreciate it, you probably never will, because it'll always be there for you to fall back on. Reliable Nox. Miss Hesper Alekos' preferred doormat." A second later, he scooted the salad he'd made over to her, dressing on the side as always, just as she liked it. "Eat. You look too thin."

"Could you try to curb the sarcasm? Just for a few minutes. I'm begging you." Not likely. It was part of the Hesper package. Nox accepted it with the rest of her flaws. But still, he was tired and had had a stressful week, and now it was only going to get worse with all this new shadow demon information.

"I took her to the Sonics game last Tuesday... not really sure if it was a date or not. I thought it was at first, but now I'm not so sure." Nox rinsed out his cereal bowl and the frying pan, putting both in the dishwasher. After cleaning up the kitchen, he leaned back against the cabinetry to chat while she ate. "She's beautiful, intelligent, and kind... someone I'd like to get to know, but I don't know if she feels the same way."

Taking the plate with a roll of her eyes, she reached down and opened the draw next to her to get a fork out. This place was the flat. It was not really home. Sure Nox was there but Nox could be anywhere and she would end up showing up. He was the one attached to actual places it seemed, more than she was. "I like Nox the doormat, he comes in colors that match my drapes perfectly." she said cheerfully as she cut off a bit of the chicken to pop in her mouth. "And I'm not too thin. Compared to a lot of the girls out there I'm perfectly sized."

Pouting playfully she looked over at him. "But everyone says that my sarcasm is one of my most attractive features. You can't tell me that you don't agree." she replied in a whiny voice before laughing and poking at the garnish with her fork. Honestly, who garnished chicken outside ofa restaurant?

Snorting slightly, she shook her head and cut up her meat. "My, my, she sounds like the perfect Mrs. Nox." she teased, watching her brother in amusement. "If she's not interested then she's not fucking worth it in my opinion. You're quite the catch. You know, if a girl's into neurotic OCD, but hey, there are weirder kinks, I'm sure of it."

"Yeah, I know you like him. But it's getting difficult to explain the tread marks on my face when I go into work. The captain is likely to think you're abusing me." Some people already were odd around the twins, thinking their relationship was strange. Not creepy, just strange. And, well, it probably was.

He rolled his eyes a bit, "Just eat, alright? At least here I know you're eating right. Who knows what sort of rubbish you call food when you're away." Nox kept a lot of nutritious options in the apartment. He liked healthy food, and he tried to make sure Hesper ate enough of it. Not that he didn't buy a bit of junk, because she'd probably accuse him of trying to starve her if he didn't provide some sweet snacks. Seemed women required that stuff.

The way she poked at the garnish didn't go unnoticed, "Parsley is good for you... helps with digestion and makes your breath smell better. Eat it."

He blushed a bit at her assessment of him. Nox wasn't sure how to respond. There was a compliment in there somewhere, but it was surrounded by a couple of insults. So he couldn't say 'thanks'. "Who knows what she's into. She had to leave town for a few days to collect her belongings for the move here. Maybe when she gets back, I'll have a chance to figure things out."

"I like abusing you though. You wouldn't take that fun away from me, would you?" Hesper did so enjoy going to the station though and bothering the people that Nox worked with. Really she was sure the rumors that she heard about herself were almost as creative as the real thing. Plus who could resist some of the more attractive members of Seattle's police and detective force?

Poking at the garnish again before eating another bit of chicken she looked amused. "I eat amazingly when I'm gone, have you know. Might even just be whoring myself for good food, you don't know, ooooo." she laughed. Healthy food was all well and good but Nox was a bit obsessed with it at times. Hesper would rather smother brownies with chocolate, caramel, and pixie sticks and see how long the sugar high lasted. In fact she was almost sure that meat and sugar were what demons were supposed to live on anyway, not broccoli and celery.

"My breath smells fine and I don't need you worrying about how I poop." she grumbled, ignoring the green bit on her plate. If he was so in love with it he could eat it.

There was a compliment in there, but Hesper could never just compliment someone. Not unless they were giving her lots and lots of money and even then it was a bit iffy. "Bet she's into motorcycles." she said, nodding sagely as she kicked out at his shin. "Girls love motorcycles. We should get you one. Might make you look less like a sissy."

Nox glared at her and huffed lightly, "Don't say whoring." Nox's tone was flat and un-amused. He hated the way she talked about sex... like it was something cheap... a toy that one played with until it got boring, and then you just bought a new one.

Looking at her seriously for a moment, putting the jokes aside (or at least trying to), Nox was quite for a moment. Then, he spoke up. "Am I really that boring? Tell me honestly. I mean... what's so bad about following the rules? And believing in romance? And worrying about the people I love? Does that really make me this unbearable person to be around? If I got a motorcycle, would you stop running off? Forget about me dating and all that nonsense. I've been alone for a while now, and I've got a lot of years left in me. I'll find a woman when the time is right. Right now, all I care about is keeping you safe, keeping the people in this city safe, and maybe one day getting Mom and Dad to come up and join us. So, if I buy a bike, think you might meet me half-way and make an effort?"

"Why, prostituting suit you better?" she asked, full on aware that it was ticking him off. Not that she would ever understand why in hell he would care about such things. Then again that was what Dad had beaten into their heads back in hell, and look where it got them? His views on all this were never going to help him. People that lived as long as they did were in a much shorter supply here on earth.

Hesper put her plate down and watched him for a long moment when he went off into his little speech. What did he want from her? She could not fix anything in his little world, she could not make it perfect for him. Fuck, she was not about to change her entire life because he had decided to come up after her. "No, I won't." she said simply, slipping off the counter. "You wouldn't want me to anyway. You say you would, but life just doesn't work that way. And you go bringing Mom and Dad up here, and you can be sure as the sun rises that I definitely won't be sticking around."

Nox was tired and stressed, and this whole conversation was only making him cranky. He didn't want to snap at Hesper and start a fight, so he just shrugged off everything. "I have some files to look over, and then I should probably try to get some sleep. Wouldn't hurt for you to do the same." He put his palm to her cheek and gave her a weak smile, "The bedding is clean, and I used that detergent you like so much. Why don't you crash. I'll make ya breakfast in the morning."

Taking her plate, he put it in the dishwasher. A few seconds later, and he had the whole space cleaned up. "Night, Hes," he whispered, putting a light kiss on her cheek as he walked out of the kitchen and into his bedroom. He probably wouldn't be able to focus on his cases, not when he was still thinking about the shadow demon who had attacked Hesper. But, he could try. If nothing else, the reading might help him fall asleep.
