Week Two: Thursday
Who: Hesper and Hale (the double H!)
What: Having an unhappy Valentines?
Where: The only pub not decorated for love
When: Thursday Night
Rating: TBA

Valentine’s was one of those things about humans and supernaturals up here that she just never got. Everything was all done up in red and pink. It was if they needed an excuse to indulge in the things they already indulged in. All in all it seemed a very impractical holiday. Though there were always jobs after Valentine’s from those who had received the ultimate slight. So perhaps the day was not terribly useless. But still Hesper found it a sick sickening in the majority of its ‘sweetness’. Really, why would someone decorate with hearts anyway? They did not even look like real hearts. Plus there was not even any blood with the hearts.

She wandered out into the city and walked into the first pub that was not decorated. The only red in the room was some man’s shirt and she preferred it that way. In fact it looked like she was the only girl in the place that night. It was all too perfect really, cut off from the foolish romantics of the outside world. If she was real lucky there might even be a card game to jump in on in the back room. Though there was a pool table that was looking awfully tempting.

Of course pool was stricken from her mind as two officers past her on the way to the door. She knew they were officers because they had said hello to her, having seen her come to bother Nox at ‘the office’ every so often. Mostly on the days when he was pretty sure that she was up to something and she felt the urge to seem innocent. Giving a wave and a cute smile, she looked over her shoulder to catch a glimpse at one of their behinds. Oh she was so right; it was the one with the cute ass. Smirking contently she headed over to the bar.

But at the bar was an even better prize. If it wasn’t her brother’s adorable partner, maybe it was turning out to be her lucky day. Hale did not like her much, but then again he was as uptight as Nox was so it was understandable. Sliding into the seat next to him she flagged the tender down. “You got anything to make a girl question her better judgment?” she asked the tender with a coy smile.

Maybe today would be some fun after all.

Valentine's Day wasn't something Hale had even remembered until one of the secretaries had passed around candies at the office that afternoon. He'd been too busy trying to figure out the case of that little girl. It had been driving him crazy that they still only had 'persons of interest,' and it wasn't as if he didn't see murders every day, but something about a child made it more difficult. Needless to say, by five o'clock he'd been in desperate need of cutting loose, and had gone with a few of the guys, two from Vice and his former partner from the SVU, to play a game of basketball at the nearby YMCA.

He and his old partner and played together before, but so had the guys from Vice, and the game had gotten pretty intense. It had been good stress relief, that was certain. There had been some good-natured trash talking, some good play on both sides, and then after all was said and done Hale and Jason came out on top. Losers had to buy drinks, so the men put their Seattle PD sweats on over their basketball shorts and t-shirts and headed to a pub they frequented.

No love talk between these guys, all four were married to their jobs. Terminal bachelors, it seemed. They had a few beers, talked about anything but work, played a game of pool (which Hale lost, miserably) and then Jason had to go, got called out on a case. Back to reality. The other two made for the door not long after.

The heater was blasting in the place, so Hale had shed his sweatshirt a while before, hanging it on the back of his chair. Underneath was a gray t-shirt, navy blue lettering reading "SPD" across his chest. He was only on his second beer. With his job, getting too drunk to function wasn't exactly an option.

Not two minutes after the Vice officers made for the door, a familiar face appeared next to him. Wonderful. "Hello, Hesper," he said politely, because really, was there any excuse to be rude? No, not at all. She was Nox's sister, after all. And she hadn't ever been that bad.

Sitting back down on the stool, she smiled at Hale. "Hello to you too, gorgeous." she teased, but into so much of a better mood. Though it might have been an even better mood if at least one of the other cops had stayed. Her luck would have been so much better with one of them. Still, Hale was a fun game she was always willing to play.

He certainly looked good in that teeshirt. The smell of activity still hung on him and it was certainly a nice scent. Why did such a nice looking boy have to have so many hang ups? She would never understand it. Sure there was his job to consider, but Hesper would never be able to understand why death affected people like Hale and her brother so much. It just did not make sense. People always died, the only thing that varied was how.

Giving a happy wink to the bartender as he gave her a drink, she held it up in a cheers to Hale before downing the shot. It was a pleasant burn on the way down and she laughed slightly, shaking her head. "Well, that certainly was what I ordered." she mused, looking at the empty shot glass for a moment.

Hesper was such a pretty girl, had such a nice brother, too. Why did she have to be so... well, not so nice? Hell, he wished Landry or Maxwell would have stuck around as well, either of them would have been a perfect distraction for Hesper while he made a speedy exit. No such luck, though. More's the pity.

Hang ups? He didn't see them that way! What was so wrong about not wanting to be a skeez? Monogamy wasn't the worst thing one could aspire to, neither was trying to save the world from criminals. Impossible? Sure. Didn't mean he wasn't going to try.

"No date for you tonight?" he asked with a slight smile, taking another drink. Conversation was going to be awkward, but walking away would be completely against his code of cordiality, or whatever. At least until he finished his beer, and it wasn't even half empty. Chugging was something he hadn't done since spring break in Cabo, his senior year of college.

As opinions would have it, Hesper thought of herself as very nice. But then again she had a very different definition of the word nice. In fact she was fairly sure it was not in any dictionary, but who could trust a dictionary really. Though if the other men had stayed, it would certainly be a very different conversation right now. In fact it would be almost the exact opposite.

She liked where she stood with Hale actually. As fun as he would be in the sack, it was just as fun to watch him squirm to avoid that result. Polite people were just so much fun to play with. No matter that her brother had told her to play nice. This was playing nice as far as she was concerned. No cards were hidden up her sleeve as far as she knew.

Shaking her head, she laughed at that actually. "You think I'd actually be able to have one?" she said in amused amazement. "I'm pretty sure Nox would put a quick stop to that sort of nonsense pretty quickly." Dates were not something Hesper did, not for a rather long time actually. Hook ups, yes, dates required having to actually hear them talk. "Looks like you're not doing any better on that front. You and Nox should start a club, really."

Opinions, opinions. Amazing how between two people, each could see each other as the one with the real problem. What had been so important that the two others had been forced to run off? Oh right, going to pick up girls. Shoulda just stuck around, maybe one of them could have entertained Hesper for the night?

Hale didn't like his position with her quite so much. It was awkward and uncomfortable as far as he was concerned, a little bit too strained. Not fun in the least, actually! If only she listened to her twin brother more often. Playing nice wouldn't be that bad would it? And if she had cards hidden up her sleeve, he just hoped they stayed that way. He wans't planning on taking her shirt off, after all.

"Nox wouldn't mind you having a date," Hale said with a smile, leaning on the bar a little. "As long as the guy wasn't some sort of degenerate." Maybe let him do a background check? "And I just don't have a date tonight. Doesn't mean I never do, does it?"

Hesper did wonder why people like Nox and Hale did not pick up girls. It was not as if they had to sleep with them, but they seemed to put girls on a pedestal. And when a guy did that there really was no girl who could match up to it. Still, the pieces were funny to see afterwards. Except for Nox's pieces, they always left her with a distinct urge to rip someone apart. But that was neither here nor there.

Why he was always so nervous with her she would never understand either. There was no way Hale could know things about her that would actually support his seemingly natural suspicion of her. In fact he had never really even seen her truly play dirty. He probably would not be able to handle it.

Motioning for another drink, she rolled her eyes. "A fucking priest wouldn't be good enough for him, let alone anyone else." That was an idea though. Nothing more fun than corrupting the chaste. Though that would mean finding an attractive priest... "Are you saying you've actually had a date then? With a real woman and everything?"

Hale didn't really know why he didn't pick up girls very often, either. Partially because of time, and he tended to use work as an excuse a lot, but other guys at the precinct managed to get married and have kids, so it wasn't like it was impossible. Part of it was he didn't want to let someone down again, like he had his college sweetheart. They'd been engaged, then he'd started working and it had all fallen apart. He realized that sometimes things just weren't meant to be, but he still didn't want to go through the effort of making connections with people if he knew it wasn't going anywhere. And it seemed it rarely was.

Hale just had a feeling about her. She made him uncomfortable. It was the way she carried herself, the way she was so forward, the way her brother made certain remarks that made him wary. If he saw her play dirty, he probably would freak out, at least a little bit, even if it would just be validating his suspicions.

"Surely he's not that bad," Hale said, rolling his eyes a little. Nox seemed over protective, yeah, but that bad? Hardly seemed likely. Probably the girl just had bad judgment and brought home lowlives. Her comment brought forth a laugh though, and he shook his head. "Yes, Hesper, a date with a real woman. Is that so difficult to believe, really?"

Another thing that confused her was their fixation on the status of a relationship. Weren't boys the ones that were supposed to be always on the prowl? At least that was what she had gathered from nearly a decade on the surface. It just seemed altogether too strange that they never went out just for a bit of fun. Hesper could not imagine that kind of stress. They were almost all work work work, all the time. She could not stand having to work too often, would drive a person mad. Especially their job, what with trying to solve murders and all. Most of which never went anywhere.

Though it would seem unusual, Hesper did not like that she made Hale uneasy. It made him harder to work. He was Nox's partner after all, and he would technically be the first person she should be able to go to for information on that end. But instead she found herself walking very weak ground. It was rather vexing at times. Oh well, at least he was cute.

"That's what you say, but do you actually think he's done more than look at a boy I'd bring home. Half the time I'm not even sure he does that." And humans really were rather breakable when it came against a demon thinking he was defending his sister. She was surprised none of them had been broken yet.

And the date comment though her eyes grew wide and she scooted closer to him. "Yes, it is. I had money on that you and Nox would eventually just shack up in some weird cop love affair." she said quite seriously. Not that it was true, but it might as well have been. "How'd you manage a date with a real woman then? You shag her to put an end to at least your monkhood?"
