Week Two - Saturday
When: Saturday night
Where: Alibi Room's main stage
What: ROARKE's show
Who: Anyone who wants to come!

They were scheduled to take the stage in ten minutes, the opening band still warming up the crowd that was quickly gathering inside the Alibi. Behind the scenes each member of ROARKE was tending to whatever pre-performance ritual they might have. Someone was bouncing repeatedly on the balls of their feet and judging from the soft clack of drumsticks to hardwood, yet another member was warming up in the 'dressing room.' Kaden tended to center himself rather quietly before a gig - standing off to the side, just where he could see the crowd, watching their reactions, getting a read for them. Not every audience was the same, you could read them and what they wanted if you paid enough attention. He did - it was one part of the many things that made him a good frontman. It was as if he had a sixth sense for the varying crowds, always knew exactly what to give them.

Eventually their warm up act stepped off stage and the small sound crew that worked on the bar's stage moved to arrange their equiptment. They'd soundchecked earlier in the day, would do so briefly again, but everything should be ready to go. A set list was taped to the amp facing his mic and from where he stood, Kaden's eyes traced over the numbers he'd picked again, just to be sure. There was a ballad or two they'd need to take out, tonight's group wasn't the type for anything too slow, too mellow. They were wired up and wanted something that was truly going to give them a reason to move. Keeping it fast paced and loud was clearly the way to go.

He was always the last to take the stage - if he had any tradition it was that. The lights would dim to near complete darkness as the others made their way out, tinkered around for a moment to make sure that everything was still in tune, still set to go. He came last, sliding up to the mic without the glare of those blasted spotlights on him, readying himself for the glare that was sometimes almost too much; a vampire's favorite place to be was definitely not under a complete set of high powered lights. When they rose tonight it was slowly enough that his eyes could adjust, that he could prepare himself for the brightness ahead. They revealed nothing particularly spectacular, the group all on stage ready to go, their frontman clad as usual in nothing more than a pair of jeans, a henley and one of many black jackets he tended to sport. That didn't stop the female portion of expressing their gratitude, not that it was all for him of course.

"Ladies and gentleman," the sound man's voice came over the system announcing the band as Kaden adjusted the mic stand, "please give it up for ROARKE!" They wasted no time with silly on-stage banter, it wasn't why people where there anyway. They wanted music, they wanted it to be good, and the band was going to waste no time in giving it to them. Hand wrapped around the mic, the count began - it wasn't long until Kaden's voice was filling the bar, floating out into the night.

This was it, the night she had been waiting for all week long. By the time the sun had set, her nerves were practically fried and she had half a mind not to go at all. But then all of the anger and hurt came flooding back and there was no question what she had to do. More than anything she needed the closure that had been eluding her since his "death." Even before she found out that he was still alive she never felt like he was truly gone. Without a body to prove it or a pile of ash, whatever, there was always that chance...she just had no idea how badly it would hurt when that chance finally became a reality.

The outfit she decided on for the evening was chosen very carefully. She had wanted it to be a little bit badass, a little more sexy and a lot "look at what you're missing." Confidence needed to be exuded in order for her to get through this and she thought she accomplished it quite well. A little black eye liner and a touch of lipstick and she was good to go. Now she just had to get herself out the door and down to the club. That took a little doing.

When she finally made her way back to the Alibi Room, his voice filled her ears immediately and for a time all she could do was stare at him up on the stage. God that man was beautiful. Her heart pounded in her chest and she could feel tears stinging at the back of her eyes. It hurt so much to see him up there like that but at the same time...she couldn't have loved him any more than she did in that moment. Dammit!

Eventually her eyes were forced to look away and she made her way to the bar. Liquid courage was definitely needed if she was going to make it through this in one piece. Serena figured he had at least three or four more songs to go before the end of that set and then she could corner him, say what she needed and leave.

That was the plan anyway.

Tonight was bound to be incredible. She had arranged it so she could work during the show and when the guys were done, Ally could be off, too. It was hard for her not to just turn away from people when they wanted to order and watch the band. All she could really offer was one ear to the stage and the other to the requests for beer, wine, and a variety of liquors or fruity combinations.

Ally was a walking billboard for ROARKE, and a good-looking one at that. Her blonde hair had been tied back in a sleek ponytail, and through it she had swept in little streaks of bright blue for a little funk. Across her chest she wore the band's name on a tight t-shirt and whatever the band had left could be purchased for a reasonable price. Someone passed over a nice tip and she slipped it into the back pocket of her form-fitting jeans. Throughout the evening, there was a sweet smile on her face that seemed to want to blossom into a grin, but she had to resist until later.

Before there was a break in their set, Ally caught sight of Serena as she weaved through the crowd to the bar. "Hey!" she shouted and gave a little wave. Maybe the woman had found something suitable for a niche of sorts in the city and she would stay.

Serena seemed to be moving through the crowd on auto-pilot and she felt numb to everything around her except his voice in her ears. It was difficult to keep her walls up while his music was seeping into soul. How in the hell was she supposed to give him a piece of her mind when she couldn't even keep her emotions in check while he was on stage? Part of her new tonight was going to be a disaster but another part didn't care. It had to be done.

Her mind tried to keep focus on her goal of reaching the bar and she almost strayed when a familiar face caught her attention and helped pull her forward. "Hey!" A smile was forced to her lips and she did her best to look excited. "Quite the crowd here tonight!" she called out over the music as she neared the bar. When her eyes caught sight of Ally's t-shirt, it took everything in her power not to glare. They were just friends, that's what the other blonde had said and until she saw otherwise, that's what she was going to believe.

"So that's them, huh?" she asked as she motioned toward the stage. "They're really good and you were right, definitely easy on the eyes." It was almost painful to pretend like she didn't know who they were but she didn't want to to do anything that would give Ally a reason to go tip Kaden off. "Can I get a vodka tonic when you get a chance?" Alcohol was needed now. Jeez.

Kaden had no idea just what waited for him in the abundant crowd that had all but packed the stage level of the Alibi Room to the rafters. He could see only brief glimpses of faces in the crowd, the lights too intense to gaze for long periods of time. In the distance, weaving through the crowd, he caught sight of Alphonsine in that ROARKE shirt she'd so loved when he'd brought it by earlier that week. Other than the group on stage with him, she was one of the only people in the world he trusted. She knew what he was, though he'd never been blunt about his glaring lack of memory. Somehow he knew she suspected something, but seeing as he couldn't remember how he'd managed to lose the last few decades of his life, there wasn't much to the story.

Things seemed to be going well for the band....the crowd loved them, the sound quality was better than Kaden had remembered....they just seemed 'on' tonight. Their first song ended, transitioned smoothly into a second without a moment of hesitation. He wasn't one for long stretches of banter - people didn't come for stand up, they came for music and that's what he wanted to give them. His job was to entertain them and he was going to do try his hardest to make sure that's what they got.

The first drink that was set before her was polished off slightly quicker than it should have been but oh well. "Long day," she offered with a halfhearted smile to anyone and no one in particular. No need to have anyone thinking she was a complete lush for no reason. "Could I get another one? Thanks." The second was sipped way more slowly than its predecessor and for a moment she tried to forget just where she was and who she was listening to. Yeah, it didn't work.

Just as the last song of the set was wrapping up, she noticed Ally disappear with a fresh beer and head for the stage. Sapphire eyes followed as the other blond made her way through the crowd and her blood boiled as she watched the beer be handed off just as a kiss was pressed to his cheek. Followed by a hug. Just friends my ass. So he had gone and replaced her with some other blond he met in a bar huh? Well fine. Maybe it was a good thing that she was here to return the ring so he could give it to her and live happily ever after! Asshole.

Two drinks was going to be her limit but after that little display of affection she waved the other bartender over and got herself another. Could they arrest her for killing someone who was technically already dead? Hmm.

Eventually a break in the set came, that time of night when the band is turned loose on the bar for awhile, allowed to rest and have a few drinks for themselves. The house lights raised, illuminated the gathered crowd a bit more as the band's members departed from the stage and disappeared into the audience. For Kaden it was the toughest to wind his way through the crowd - the curse of the lead singer, he supposed.

Tonight was his lucky night it seemed. Alphonsine was kind enough to push through the crowd and bring him the beer that he would have ordered had he ever reached the bar. It paid off to be friends with the bartender, it seemed. She greeted him over-zealously as usual, pressing a kiss to his cheek and wrapping him into a hug. That was Ally for you, though, Kaden was used to her bubbly nature. "Thanks," he raised the beer slightly before it made it's way to his lips.

"Place looks good tonight," he had to lean over, to raise his voice to be heard over the music piped in over the loud speakers during the band's break. Ally nodded, her eyes sweeping eagerly over the packed house, "Looks great! You guys sound amazing!" Her excitement was contagious and he could feel it bleeding over into the smile that crept onto his lips.

"I should get back to the bar," she added after a moment, glancing back to see the place swarming with thirsty patrons. Her gaze touched onto Serena for a moment and she lit up, "Oh! There's someone I want you to meet! Come with me!" He had little choice but to follow, especially once she grabbed his wrist and started tugging him through the crowd. It took a few moments longer than usual to get there, to weave their way through everyone waiting for the second half of the show to start or those that wanted to compliment him on the band's performance so far.

"Serena, this is Kaden, ROARKE's lead singer," she stopped once they reached a particularly striking blonde seated alone at the bar, "Kaden this is Serena. She's new in town and I told her she had to see you guys." It looked as though Alphonsine was about to add more when the guy tending bar alone hollered for her help. She glanced between the pair for a moment and scurried off to pitch in.

"Nice to meet you, Serena," Kaden offered up a charming smile and a hand to shake in greeting. And though she was probably too intoxicated or angry to even notice, there was no recognition, not even the faintest hint, shining in those warm eyes of his.

At the sound of the introduction, Serena almost physically cringed but somehow managed to refrain. The last thing she wanted to do was blow up in front of Ally because it wasn't like the poor woman had any idea what a bastard her new boyfriend was underneath that charming facade of his. Well, here went nothing. After replacing her glass on the bar, she turned to meet his eyes and there were no words to explain the anger that erupted inside of her when he decided to play dumb.

"Seriously?" she asked as she glanced down at his hand. "Fine, if you want to play it this way...whatever." It hurt that he wanted to pretend they were strangers, that he didn't want to own up to the fact that he had made up some elaborate story just to get away from her. This was all probably just a way to keep her from embarrassing both of them in the crowded bar. Fine, she could play but she wasn't going to keep her mouth shut. No, she needed to get a few things off of her chest and then she would go.

"Let's just get this over with." The ring that had been on her thumb was pulled off and placed on the bar just in front of him. "I just want you to know that I'm okay with this...that I will be okay with this." Any confusion that may have been on his face was ignored. She had already started to say what needed to be said and there was no stopping her. "I won't lie and say that it doesn't hurt to know that you went through such great lengths to get away with me. I would think that someone as old as you are could have been man enough to tell me that it wasn't working rather than coming up with some elaborate plan that involved your death. Or dust, or however that works."

For the most part she couldn't look him in the eyes because she wasn't sure if she would be able to finish, but the brief glimpses she gave clearly said that she was hurting inside. "You should also know that I'm not leaving the city just because you're here. I was offered a fabulous position at the hospital and I refuse to give up my dream just because you are a bastard." Slowly she slid off of her bar stool and grabbed her purse. "So good luck with all of your future endeavors and the next time you decide to play dead-dead, try to avoid cameras so that your picture doesn't end up on the internet again. Oh and one more thing," she said just as she was about to turn and walk away. "I'm keeping the dog."

The moment Ally walked away he could feel the change in the dynamic between he and Serena. There was no way he could have been aware of what had caused it but, memory or not, there was no missing the sudden tension that bloomed between them. One moment she seemed like any other woman you might meet in a bar and the next she was looking up at him with such anger, such pain in those blue eyes and he was helpless as to what he'd done to cause it.

His brain was fighting to keep up with all of the pieces....the ring, something about him being a bastard, him being old enough to know better, a dog... By the time it dawned on him that she had to have know him before, that she was hinting towards things that someone who hadn't would have never known, she was already halfway across the bar in mid-storm out.

Swiping the ring from the bar top and depositing it into his pocket, Kaden hurried after her, pushing his way through the crowd to try and catch up with her. He managed to do so only moments after she'd left the bar, both of them spilling out into the cool night air. He reached out to grab her arm, hoping not to scare the crap out of her, hurrying around to try and stop her. "Wait, wait, wait, just a second," he held up his hands, gaze blank but pleading with her to give him just a moment of her time. "You know me, right? I mean, obviously you do, from the practically wishing death on me back in there, I can pretty much assume you know me. But if you know me as well as you seem to, you have to know that I don't remember..." Right? Hopefully? Fucking memories, who knew they were so damn important!

He sighed, raking a hand through his hair. "I'm guessing from the...sound of things back there that you don't owe me anything, but I'd like to hear what you know about me if I could persuade you to just let me listen." He couldn't remember her for the life of him, but he couldn't let her get away. There was something screaming that she might be the key to...everything.

Even while Serena was ranting, she couldn't decide whether or not his silence was a good thing. In a way it was because it allowed her to get everything off of her chest but on the other hand she was still left without answers. Part of her wanted to know why he had left but the other part just wanted it to be over. The pain in her heart was practically overwhelming and all she could think about was getting away before she died of a broken heart.

The cool night air was like a slap in the face once she was outside and did wonders to help her sober up. Any warm and fuzzy feelings she might have had back at the bar were suddenly washed away and she left only with the stabbing sensations in her chest. She struggled to keep the tears at bay and succeeded for the most part. A stray or two slipped past but they were quickly wiped away. And then there was a hand on her arm and Kaden was suddenly in front of her pleading for...what?

Confusion clouded her blue eyes and for a second she thought this was a joke. Serena searched his gaze as he talked about not remembering and wanting answers and... "Oh God." Her stomach fell to the floor as realization hit her like a ton of bricks. "You wrote a letter before you went to see if the cure was real even after I begged you not to go and you gave it to Ryan to give to me if you didn't come back...we thought you were dead."

Everything seemed to be racing as she tried to keep up with what had happened but it was all too overwhelming. Before she could stop herself, she threw her arms around his neck and buried her face in his chest. Anger seemed to be replaced with guilt, guilt for not knowing that something bad had happened to him and trying to find him. "Kaders I'm sorry...I thought you were dead....I- I didn't know."

For the second time that night there was a rather dramatic change in the dynamic of things between them. Honestly, given how things had gone down inside the bar, he was fully expecting a slap....maybe even a punch, she was definitely no delicate flower when angered. Instead there were tears, warm against his chest as they soaked through his Henley, her arms wrapped tight around his neck. Unsure exactly how to handle this three-sixty of emotions, Kaden embraced her loosely in return - it seemed rude not to.

"I take it than you do know me then?" he asked once the two had separated, his gaze seeking hers out once more. "You thought I was dead?" a dark brow lofted at that. Ok, so maybe his old life was more interesting then even he had pretended it could have been. "Wait, I went in search of a cure?" He sighed heavily, running his hands over his face, letting them slide back to bury in his dark hair in a moment of frustration. "Fuck...I'm missing a lot here, aren't I?" All the signs were pointing to a big fat yes.

Then it dawned on him that he was due back on stage any moment, that the band was probably already looking for him. "Shit, I have to get back inside to finish the set. Would you...would you come and stay for the rest? Maybe let me pick your brain a bit afterwards? I'll owe you like crazy, I'll think of someway to pay you back, but there are a lot of holes in my brain that could do with some filling in."

When he didn't return the embrace, she felt a cold chill run down her spine. Of course he wasn't going to just magically remember her, that would be a foolish thing for her to hope for. Even without her medical training she should have known that. But all the knowledge and common sense in the world couldn't make it hurt any less, so she stepped back and wiped away her tears and fought desperately to regain her composure.

"I..." He had so many questions and while she had the answers, she didn't even know where to begin. Before she even had a chance to try, he was having to go and once again she was torn. "Um, I don't know that I could sit in there," she muttered as she glanced off across the street. "We- We met in a bar and I just...Maybe I could meet you afterwards instead? I'll uh go get some coffee or something and meet you when you're finished."

If the people who had claimed to have a "cure" stole his memory for him, then he deserved to have someone fill him in. Even if it did hurt like hell that he couldn't remember her. "So go be great and I'll see you later." The smile that held her lips hinted of sorrow but she did her best to put on a brave face. God, how was she going to do this?

After he had headed back inside, she took a long walk and eventually found herself inside of a coffee shop. The cup of black liquid sat relatively untouched in front of her and she couldn't help but feel numb. What was she going to do if he never remembered her? He had started a new life and lived that life for well over a year now, what if there wasn't any room for her to be in it? Just the possibility of it made her sick to her stomach and she almost didn't return to meet him.

Her nerves threatened to get the best of her when she eventually neared the bar again and she shoved her hands deep into the pockets of her coat to keep them from shaking. "Hey."

When Serena returned, the show had ended and much of the crowd had dispersed. The band was busy carrying equiptment out to the trailer parked out front of the Alibi Room, each member hefting down some random bit of the group's stuff. When Kaden emerged, he was carrying a pair of smaller amps, surprised evident on his face as he caught sight of her. "I wasn't sure you'd come back," he admitted, shoving the sound equiptment into the back of the vechile. Dusting off his hands on his jacket, he shut the trailer doors and slid a padlock into place.

"Good timing though, we just finished loading everything up," the band was emerging one by one from the bar behind him, most with some array of food or drink in hand. It was a perk of playing in bars, he supposed, being fed for free. He obviously didn't take much advantage of it, but the few members of ROARKE that did seemed to enjoy it. He took a moment to stay goodnight to the group, two piling into the van while the others wandered off to their respective cars.

"So," hands thrust deep in his pockets in what she'd surely recognize as a nervous gesture, he flashed a smile that matched. "I don't know where would be best to do this," he admitted, not sure what might be uncomfortable for her and what might not be. His place, obviously, was probably not the best location.

"You already had coffee....did you eat? I mean, you probably know that I don't, but I'd be happy to buy you dinner, breakfast, whatever meal comes about now in return for picking your brain." He couldn't imagine how strange this must be for her, but he was trying his best to make sure that it wasn't painfully odd.

It was a familiar sight to see, all of the band doing their part with the break down and what not. "To be honest I wasn't sure that I would either." There had been at least a half dozen times on her way back when she almost turned around and went back to her hotel room. But he deserved more than that and some part deep inside was holding on to the hope that he might remember or at least be able to feel something for her again.

"I figured. I got pretty good at guessing when your shows would be done." Hell, she had attended most of them but the ones that she had missed she had at least been able to meet him back at the apartment just as he was getting home. Memories of a time that felt like a lifetime ago made her stomach do another flip and her heart ache. It was ridiculous how much she had missed him and now that he was back...well it was like she was losing him all over again.

His place was definitely out of the question because she didn't know if she could handle seeing another piece of his new life. "Um, no but I could probably eat." It was so awkward to have him there but not really have him "be" there, if that made any sense. "I passed a diner on the way back, we could go there," she said as she motioned behind her.

The walk over was uncomfortable to say the least but they managed to get there and get seated at a table back in the corner. No need to have anyone eavesdropping on what was going to be the strangest conversation ever. Some hot chocolate, eggs, hash browns and toast were ordered after they were seated and she fidgeted for a moment until the waitress wandered away again. "I don't even know where to start," she admitted. "What would you like to know first?"

"Diner, sounds good," he nodded, motioning for her to lead the way. Had to be a gentleman always, didn't he? And so the two set off towards the restaurant she'd passed on her way back to meet him, the neon lights of the 'OPEN' sign illuminated against the wet Seattle cement. He held the door for her, let her step inside out of the cool night air first, following after a moment later.

Thankfully their table was set far back from the majority of the patrons - anyone who overheard their conversation would likely think both of them needed to be committed. Serena placed her order, Kaden went simply for coffee - it wasn't so much the taste he enjoyed, but the warmth was something his undead self rather enjoyed. The server scurried off to place their orders, leaving the two of them in peace for a few moments. It was a tense silence that stretched between them before Serena charged ahead with the questions he was sure she wasn't looking forward to.

"I don't really know where to ask you start," he admitted, hands resting atop the table. His coffee and her hot chocolate arrived soon after and he paused for a moment, wrapping his hands around the mug. "I guess...well, would you rather start with details or a more general story? I'm curious about everything, really. How we met, how long we've known one another, that type of thing....I guess? Whatever you're comfortable with telling me really, considering you're doing me a favor."

The hot chocolate was held between her hands and she focused on the warmth the porcelain cup was providing. Normally she could eat under any circumstance but at the moment her hunger was failing her. Maybe the smell would get her going once the food arrived? At least then she'd be able to focus on something that wasn't those gorgeous eyes of his. It just wasn't fair really.

Dammit. Serena had been hoping for specific questions because that was going to be easier than starting on her own but no, he was just as turn around as she was now. "Hmm. I guess I'll start from the beginning then." She placed her hands flat onto the table but thought better of it and gripped the cup again. It really sucked that she was so nervous/uncomfortable/anxious about all of this.

"Well like I mentioned earlier we met in bar, almost four years ago now actually. I was in New York City with some friends of mine and we were celebrating our graduation from med school. I know they say there's no such thing as love at first sight but...um, anyway, we hit it off and even though I was doing my residency in New Haven we still saw each other as much as possible. The train definitely saved our relationship, no question." Holy damn this was awkward. And painful, don't forget painful. If somehow she managed to live through this she was going back to her room and gorging herself on ice cream and chocolate doughnuts.

A deep breath was taken along with a slow sip of her cocoa. "So a little over a year into it you came clean and told me about your "lifestyle," but I pretty much already knew. Um, after that you proposed and we started to plan our wedding." Serena did her best to stay nonchalant about the whole thing but it was extremely difficult. Fortunately her food arrived and gave her a little time to breathe and focus on not having the hardest conversation of her life.

"Yeah and um, so about six months into the engagement you told me that you had heard there was a cure for ...vampirism and I begged you not to go but you did it anyway and well, the rest is history." Her voice dropped to a whisper and once she was finished, she sat back and got to work on her hash browns. "How was that?"

He listened with rapt attention, eyes focused solely on her, clearing clutching on to every single word that she dropped before him. It was strange to hear such intimate details about yourself from someone who claimed to know you so well and yet remember none of it. It was more than he'd expected - the engagement, the live together - he'd thought maybe they'd dated for awhile, been friends. Of course that meant...he reached into his pocket and produced the ring she'd left on the bar, sliding it across the table to her. "Thought you might want that back." To throw in a river or something, given what he was hearing.

For a few moments, after she finished, he just sat there looking as if she'd just shot him in the foot or done something equally as shocking. "That is....a lot to take in," he admitted, letting out a deep breath. He'd asked this woman to marry him, told her about what he truly was and now he remembered none of it? As hard as it was to be him in that moment, he could only imagine that it was harder to be her. She was the one living with all the memories. For her, nothing had changed. He was the one who had gone and ruined everything.

"So I am...was...am a complete ass then, is what your telling me?" he managed with a slight smile, tripping over exactly what words were appropriate for now. She'd begged him not to try something and he'd gone and done it anyway and now look where it left the both of them.

"Christ," he sighed, leaning back against his side of the booth, "guess I got what I deserved for being such a dumbass then." Surely he must've know that there was no cure - the vampire 'network' would have been all a buzz if there was. Plenty of vamps weren't thrilled with the idea of eternal life, he'd bet they'd be lining up for something like that. And yet, in spite of all of that, even now he knew he was stubborn enough to seek it out even if it had just been a passing rumor. Maybe that was his tragic flaw, his great downfall in all of this.

"I..." he glanced up at Serena for a moment, unsure of where this conversation went now, "I'm...sorry." He didn't remember any of it and, as much as he'd hoped it would, beginning to hear about the life he'd lost didn't seem to be bringing anything back.

Blue eyes fell to the ring that had been placed onto the table and she shook her head. "No, you keep it. Maybe it will help you remember some day." The wedding band wasn't technically hers anyway, she had only found it when she had packed up some of his things a few months ago. Besides, she wasn't sure she could handle having it as a reminder of what she had lost.

Pale lips went thin as she stared down at her plate. "Yeah, I guess." He might have been getting what he deserved, but Serena couldn't recall what she had done to deserve all of this. Losing him and then finding him only to lose him all over? She wanted to think that she was a good person but obviously she had done something at some point to bring all of this down on her. Just wished she could remember what.

"I am too." With her appetite suddenly gone again, she pushed her plate away and set down her fork. "Look, I want to help you, I really do but you have to understand that this is really hard for me because you're right there and we used to be so in love but there's nothing in your eyes now..." A deep breath was taken as she fought back another wave of tears. "So after tonight I don't know if I can just be your friend because I am still hopelessly in love with you and it would hurt too much."

The fresh tears were wiped away and she struggled to keep the rest at bay. "So if you have any more questions you should ask them. And I'll even be sure to have your old stuff sent here so that you can go through it." Serena hated herself for not being able to help him more than she was but there was only so much abuse her poor heart could take.

Kaden retrieved the ring, tucking it carefully back into his pocket. It might not have held the meaning for him that it once did, but if those memories, those emotions ever returned, he didn't want to be without such an important piece of his past. The tension between them was nearly tangible...the sadness, the pain, the awkward conversation that was clearly straining for the both of him. He couldn't imagine how difficult this was for her and surely she had no idea how much it tore him up to have his life told to him like a story and, worse yet, one that he'd never heard before.

"I understand," he nodded after a moment, "I guess I don't, really, but I can imagine this isn't exactly the way you'd choose to spend your evening. I'll take whatever help you can give me and when it's too much, when you're done, all you have to do is walk away. You don't owe me anything, clearly I'm the one that owes you something. The least I can do is make whatever comes next as easy as possible."

He was never one that was a fan of seeing women cry, it just wasn't something that he particularly enjoyed. The idea that she had once meant so much to him and now he was the cause of those tears, well memory or not that stung.

"I wish I could remember," he admitted after a moment, sighing heavily, "you have no idea how much I wish it would just all come back, all the memories that I don't have anymore. I don't even remember what I was like before, but I'm sure that I never meant to hurt you....in any of this. I may not remember me or....us, but I know that if I could I wouldn't want to hurt you now, either." And for that reason, no matter how badly he wanted to, he just couldn't ask her anymore questions, couldn't bring himself to make her go to such a painful place anymore. Kaden stood - it was probably best that he just go - leaning over to press a chaste kiss to her cheek. "I'm sorry," he added one last time, the look in his eyes completely genuine before he turned to make himself leave. He paused only to pay the bill, wanting to do anything to alleviate her pain.

When he got up to leave, the tears came again and she couldn't remember a time when she hated herself more than she did it that very moment. It wasn't fair, she wasn't being fair to him and she knew it. Small hands frantically wiped at her tear stained cheeks. Her mind was spinning and while she knew she couldn't just put on a brave face and pretend that she was okay with this. That wouldn't have been fair to either of them. But she also knew that she couldn't just let him walk out that door.

In one quick move, her purse was grabbed up and she raced after him. Her chest heaved as she rushed out the door and for a moment she thought he was gone. Blonde hair whipped to either side as she looked for him and just as she was about to give up, she caught sight of his back about a block down. "Kaden! Kaden wait!" Her heart pounded in her chest and she knew that she had to make things right before she really did lose him forever.

The heels of her boots clipped against the cool concrete of the sidewalk as she ran after him and she stopped only when she was a few feet away. "I don't want to lose you. I just...I just need some time." Blue eyes pleaded with him as she tucked her golden hair behind her ears. "Just give me a little while to adjust. Please."

He definitely hadn't expected her to follow him out, to try and catch up with him before he slipped away. As far as Kaden was concerned she'd probably never want to see him again - in fact, that was probably best....well at least for her. He really didn't have a clue what was best for him in all of this. Did that even matter anymore? And did he believe every bit of what she'd told him? It seemed to be so much more information that his brain could even take in. He wanted to believe that his mind would remember someone he'd loved enough to propose to, to share his true nature with. So why did he feel like Serena was a stranger?

He turned to face her as she hurried to catch up with him, his hands stuffed deep into the pockets of his coat. It felt odd to have her asking for a chance, for time. Shouldn't that have been him in all of this? Granted his head was still reeling from all that he'd learned about himself tonight - maybe he could blame that for a lack of common sense, gentlemanly nature, whatever it was that seemed to have suddenly failed him.

Kaden nodded, digging into the back pocket of his jeans to hand over one of ROARKE's business cards with his name and number printed on the front. "Take all the time you need, really," she was doing him the favor, after all, "you can reach me there....whenever."
