The life of the wife is ended by the knife. Aug. 30th, 2007 @ 09:15 am
[info]elfwreck
Name: This is either pointless, or a bit invasive for an online discussion forum. I answer readily to Elfwreck, Elf, or Erica. (Or several other things, too, but I don't get called them much by strangers.)
Age: Over 30. Not over 40.
Sex: Yes, absolutely. (Erm... I'm female. Not sure why this matters.)
Likes: (Is this supposed to be a condensed version of the interests list on my profile?) Sex, fanfic, conlangs, science fiction, religion, paganism, debate, flamewars, linguistics, feminism, attachment parenting. I could go on.
Dislikes: Ravenwolf Wiccans, right-wing politics, pointless bureaucracy, most reality TV shows.
List of good debate topics: Anything involving religion, especially anything touching on modern paganism. Anything involving women's or children's rights. Civil rights. Online social dynamics. Copyright issues. Obscenity issues. Marriage. Sex. Software legalities. Advertising. Laws.

That's probably enough to start with.

Foreign Languages in School? Jun. 5th, 2007 @ 09:03 pm
[info]bri
Here in the United States, it is not required for us to have a fully functional second language. For example, Japan obviously learns their native language, but also learn English at an early age. Many other countries are the same way. Now, I know it is required for many high school students to take 2 foreign language classes or something of that sort, but I'm talking about actually being able to speak the language and be multilingual(sp?). So what I was getting at is...

Should Americans be required to learn a second language at a young age?

What do you think of Canada's relationship with The United States? (and vice-versa) Do you think Canada needs the US more than the US needs Canada? Could the US just roll over and make Canada part of the States? Explain here.

Gender roles Oct. 25th, 2005 @ 12:16 am
[info]tempest
What is your opinion on gender roles? If you don't know what I mean, it's the idea of the wife being the homemaker, mother, and moral authority of the family, and the husband being the provider.

DO NOT just leave a comment saying something ignorant like men are sexist pigs, et cetera. I will delete it. Just so you know, I've spoken with women who agree with this idea as well; it isn't just men trying to rule over their slave housewives, so spare me.

1) Should we be over there? Why or why not? If you agree or disagree, voice you're opinions with some citation, so it's not a regurgitation of what everyone else is saying.

2) How do we end the war?

Creation days Oct. 5th, 2005 @ 01:00 am
[info]tempest
First off, this is a biblical discussion, so if you don't believe in the Bible at all please don't come and say, "well, it's all wrong anyhow." Just stay out of it if you can't think of anything real to contribute.

The six days it took God to create this planet--were they 24 hour days, or were they thousands of years? I'd like to know what people think.

Space exploration... why arent we doing it? As a country, being the United States, we should invest time and money into it. The world is either going to explode due to Nuclear Purifying Fire, De-Evolve in terms of technology, or Explode into Space.

Why you should think this way )

Refute that!

e Idiocy Jun. 2nd, 2005 @ 01:55 pm
[info]ex_thetruth545
This was posted last night on the e Piracy debate and was deleted by the person hosting the debate.

"Yes, I'm going to disagree.

HWSNBN thinks that everyone "e-pirates" his stuff. This is not true. He posts EVERYTHING all over the Internet. People have even made a compilation of all the links, which are all put out in the open on Writer's Den, Author's Den, his various websites, blogs, journals, message boards, etc. Nothing has been stolen, nothing has been done to warrant "the death threats", i.e. ripping people's spines out, telling people he hopes they get AIDS and nut cancer, and threatening children.

A Truce was even made in an attempt to get HWSNBN to simmer down, but he brought back an old fight between him and a VERY well-known author. This stirred things up again because he is one who likes attention of the negative sort.

Do your research and you will find that all the things he has spouted from his hairy muffin hole is utter and complete nonsense."

If any of you care to talk about this along with the aforementioned debate, please do so. This is not a "Bashing" of any kind.

e-piracy Jun. 1st, 2005 @ 11:59 am
[info]nickolaus
I know musicians would have this issue too but now you're hearing about it with writers, I will say this -- one of my anthologies got pirated and I was wondering if there is someone here who had that problem especially if they got a novel coming out and you didn't want anyone else to have it until it was finished and already someone was leaking it out. I want to know if you support epiracy or you think it is wrong. I am starting to understand why Metallica went to the courts against Napster. There is something in me that wants to rip these e-pirates spines out, but there are always going to be a few out there who will e-pirate a book before it gets a chance to make a few sales -- as in what happened to Tabloid Purposes II.

Childfree Pet Owners?

WTF?

I thought people were childfree because they didn't want the responsibility of raising a kid, and they were too worried the kid would turn out screwed-up. So, uh, why raise pets? You could very easily be an irresponsible pet-owner who raises a nasty dog that pisses everywhere.

Plz advise.
