Week 15: Saturday

Who:  Sydni and Aimee
What:  Bonding over forams
Where:  Science lab
When:  Saturday afternoon

Sydni had woken up later than she expected.  She wasn't sure if it was from her body trying to mend or from the pain meds, but in any case, she wanted to get over to see Aimee and make sure that the sample had made it to her, and that it was a good sample.  What with the rush from the reef back to the school, she wasn't sure that the sample had been handled the way it should have been.  Starbuck had been much more concerned with her well-being than the sample's integrity, for obvious reasons.

Being careful to keep her wounded arm from getting wet, she took a shower (more difficult than it sounded) and got dressed.  Her stomach felt queasy, but she forced herself to go to the Lunch Hall and make up some toast and butter.  It wasn't much, but she knew she needed something.  She also filled up a Nalgene bottle with apple juice.  If she couldn't eat her nutrients, she'd drink them.

Sydni took her time meandering down to the science labs.  She'd check each one, and then check Aimee's office.  If she wasn't in any of those places, she'd go back to her room and jot of an e-mail.  Of course, having actually learned to type properly, hunting and pecking was a pain in the ass, which was what she had to do now with her hurt arm.  Doing her homework was going to be a pain.  At least she'd heal a lot quicker.

Having checked a couple of the labs already, Sydni thought she heard some movement down the wall.  Heading in that direction, she checked the rooms on the way, and when she finally reached the door from which she thought the sound had emanated, she poked her head in.  "Aimee?" she called out.  She couldn't help herself - all the years of French made her pronounce it with a French accent, as it should be.  Of course, she also had the problem of pronouncing any foreign word with a French accent, which could be especially amusing to speakers of the respective language.

Week 9: Thursday

Who:  Sydni and Aimee
What:  Being a science geek
Where:  Aimee's office
When:  Afternoon

Sydni had decided she'd waited long enough.  Doing nothing was driving her nuts.  She needed to at least find out what sort of facilities were available at the school.  If anything, she could make up a 'shopping list' of what she'd need to continue her research.  It would be better, though, if she could just start chumming the waters.  Find out which species called the waters around here home.

She remembered the first welcome post she'd gotten.  It was from the science professor, Aimee.  She had been intrigued by her on several points.  One, she was a fellow scientist.  She knew she'd crave the feeling of collegiality she had with other scientists, and she was hopeful she could strike up a friendship with the professor.  It didn't hurt that she spoke French, something she was hoping to revisit now that she was back in school.  Second, she was curious about the professor's specialty in geology.  She had an interest in the magical properties of various stones, and she wondered what her take was on this area.  She was a scientist, so she would look at it objectively and imperically, and she was supernatural so maybe she had some sort of insight into the magical properties of stones.

After her usual morning walk on the beach, Sydni had returned to her room and written a few lines.  She wanted to kill some time before she went to find Aimee.  She wasn't sure if she would have classes or finals right now, and she didn't want to go to her office when she wouldn't be there.  She showered and dressed, choosing blacks slacks and a white blouse, instead of her usual jeans and a t-shirt.  She didn't feel there was a need to dress up, so much as she believed in first impressions.  Black sparkly flip-flops and a black leather thong necklace with a sharktooth finished the ensemble.

She contemplated putting on some make-up, but it wasn't her usual look, and she thought perhaps the woman would realize that and think her superficial.  Besides, she reserved make-up for when she wanted to feel either sexy, powerful, or pampered.

Finally ready to present herself, she made her way over to Aimee's office.  She paused part way down the hallway.  Damn she hated making introductions.  She never knew what to say.  Hi sounded so... typical.  And everything else sounded fake.  She fiddled a bit with her ring and the shark's tooth at her neck, before sighing and making her way to the door.  She paused again and took a couple calming breaths.  Then she raised her hand, hesitated for a second, and knocked lightly.

Week Three: Monday

Who: Aimee and Kim
Where: Aimee's office
When: Monday afternoon
What: Kim finally meets her guide teacher

Kim yawned loudly as she walked out of her Inner Beast Control class. After a week, she still found the class to be rather boring. She didn’t understand why she just couldn’t get into the topics. Maybe it had to do with the fact that she’d been forced to control her every action every breathing moment of her life. Yeah, that definitely had to be it. She didn’t feel like being lectured at about control again. She’d heard it all before and she felt that she already had a pretty good grip on it, so why bother? Unfortunately, this was one of the few classes she was allowed to take this quarter because she had arrived so late into it. Oh well, at least she learned now so she wouldn’t choose to take the class later on down the line.

She turned into a different hallway and grumbled softly as she adjusted her school bag and her bow and arrow carrying case across her shoulders. In the middle of Archery class, her stomach had decided that it needed something else to eat before Inner Beast Control, so she promptly listened and ran off toward the cafeteria. And because of that, she didn’t have enough time to drop off her equipment in her room. Wonderful. She was now regretting that decision and silently scolded herself for not having eaten enough before Archery class.

She walked a little further down this new hallway, stopping a few times to readjust all the stuff on her back, before she stopped in front of an office door. She looked at the name on the door.. Aimee Vassar. Yeah, this was the right office. Kim had already been at Halcyon for a week, but she still hadn’t talked to her guide teacher, which actually was the first thing the scout had told her to do. Whoops. Better late than never, right? Kim stifled a yawn as she raised her right hand and knocked on the office door.

Week One: Saturday

Who: Aimee and Miklos
When: Saturday night
Where: A tower rooftop

Aimee had crept to a rooftop of one of the higher towers of the school just after sundown to make sure things would be perfect for a quiet night together with Miklos. After so long apart, she found she couldn't seem to spend enough time with him. It had only been two days since their long overdue reunion, and tonight while many of the students were off entertaining themselves in the city, Aimee thought that a weekend night spent alone under the stars sounded like a wonderful idea, especially since the rain had tapered off that morning and the sky was clear.

She piled some pillows and blankets on the stone underfoot to pad it for the stargazing and set up a few large candles around the tower to light it enough that they could see each other after the stars lost their initial appeal. She was dressed nicely, a soft blue sweater over dark-wash denim and high heeled pumps. She loved modern clothes, they offered so much more choice, so much more freedom than she was used to. It was refreshing.

With the flickering candles lit, Aimee found that the light wasn't too much, that the stars were still as visible as they would have been without, so she left them burning, wax dripping onto the ground as she adjusted the telescope she'd brought out of storage earlier. Her long hair, usually tied back, was loose tonight and blowing slightly in the wind. She had asked Miklos to meet her there, and it was only a few minutes shy of when she'd asked him to arrive. If he was as punctual as she remembered, he'd most likely be early. She smiled thinking of it, leaning on the ledge and looking out over the dark forest below.

This reunion still seemed surreal, blissfully so. But right now she intended to not dwell on the time apart, instead to focus on making sure they treated this second chance like they deserved it. She wasn't one to waste opportunities, and this was no exception. Taking the moonstone she wore on a chain around her neck in her hands, she looked at it under the light created by its namesake and wondered if he still had the piece of sunstone she had given him upon their parting. Moonstone was said to be able to reunite lovers, and she knew it was silly to place any belief in something that was surely a myth, but she knew that the stones did hold magical power.
