Week Twenty: Tuesday
Who: James and Ita
When: Afternoon
Where: The library
What: A chance encounter

Avoiding everyone was quickly becoming James thing. Ever since he had returned from his mother's funeral, had he been this way. Granted, he had spent some time with Cissy when he first got back and had gone out one with Natalia, but that was it. And neither of those things had made him feel better at all. Natalia had basically rejected him even though he had tried his best to do better, to show her that he could be better, and he had thought that... well that there was something there but apparently he had been mistaken.

And then there was Cissy. He had been hot for her for a long time and she always turned him down. Always. But she was now dating some kid? What was that about? There was nothing that could have made him feel much better than he felt already than that. For real though, what the fuck? The kid must have been damn good in bed or something. He gave the whole relationship two months tops before Cissy left him heart broken and went back to sleeping with that asshole demon fuck again. But what did he really care? It wasn't like he had real feelings for her. No, those were otherwise occupied.

Speaking of occupied, reading had become a fast hobby of his. He had always rather enjoyed a good book, but since he had become the resident house of fire recluse, he had found himself breezing through novel after novel with very little thought. It was a welcome escape to staring out his window at the darkness and pondering the million and one things that he had to ponder.

Of course this new hobby led him to spend much time in the school's library which was, for the most part, quite empty. He liked it that way and he had gotten used to it being that way which was why, as he moved from one section to another, he hadn't bothered to use any of his extra senses to keep him from plowing into the girl that was making a similar move from one row to the next. And the books in her hands, and his own, went flying from his and her grasp as an arm moved out to grab her around the waist in an attempt to keep her from crumpling to the floor.

"Sorry..." James mumbled, not sounding at all convincing though his body language spoke of him being genuine. And he immediately knelt down to start picking up books, his and hers both.

Ita was engrossed in a book. This was quite notable since she didn't often read. But this particular book was very interesting. It was on kitchen witches. Kitchen witches?! It was so cool. It didn't seem to work quite like the magic she knew, but it was intriguing nonetheless. She could totally be a kitchen witch! Never mind that it was really more of a religion.

Looking up just in time to see the collision, Ita wasn't fast enough to avoid it. Cringing for the impact, she was pleasantly surprised to find, instead, that the young man had caught her around the waist. Handsome young man in fact. "Nice catch!" she offered up as thanks.

The blond wasn't fazed by his tone. He obviously meant it since he stooped down to help her pick up all the books. "No, it's ok." Kneeling to help, as well, Ita shifted the books to one hand and offered her other with a smile. "I'm Ita."

"Thanks." Again the words were mumbled rather than actually being spoken. James was usually much more talkative, much more charming, when he met a striking young woman, but right now, he couldn't really bring himself to be either of those things. Right now, he was just too pissed off at the world, and too upset about his mother's death, to be anything other than a brick wall, or at least that was how it felt.

The name, when she mentioned it, sounded familiar. And he was delayed in saying anything at all to her as far as an introduction went because he was trying to place it. The conversation was at last recalled and he glanced up at her to have a better look, offering her a bit of a smile as he stood, arms laden with books. "James. I believe I was supposed to show you around once upon a time." He glanced about and then back at her. "I'm assuming you probably know your way around pretty well by now."

It seemed the young man had something occupying his mind. Or, at the least, he wasn't very talkative. Ita was wondering what might be on his mind when he finally explained the connection. "Oh! Yes, I remember. You had to... leave for an emergency... Is everything ok now?" She hoped it was, since he was back now, and the concern showed in her face. "I do, thank you," she smiled.

((Sorry, way short, but she doesn't have much else to say, lol.))

"She's dead." James said it before he could really think otherwise about it. And now that it was out, he should probably explain. "My mother. That was the emergency. Car accident. She didn't make it." He gave a small shrug of his shoulders as if dismissing the topic and really, he was. That was the last thing he wanted to talk about, least of all with a complete and total stranger.

"So.. kitchen witches then?" He asked, querying the book as he handed it back to her. "What exactly is a kitchen witch?" That was a phrase he was not familiar with, and one that he was not particularly interested in, but the moment had quickly turned awkward and he thought that feigning interest in something she seemed interested in might help to alleviate that.

Ita's face immediately softened, not with sympathy, but with understanding. She let him dismiss the topic, but added softly, laying her hand on his arm, "If you want to talk... My parents were killed in a fire. I do understand." She wanted to hug him, to envelope him in all the healing physical contact could bring. But she remembered how numb she'd been to that kind of thing right after her parents' deaths. She didn't want to invade.

"Oh! I don't really know, for sure. It seems like it's some sort of human religion. But they do magic with food! Well, not like magic here. But it's still cool! I think I'm going to be one!" Yes, it was that simple for her. She had no faith to change, really, and it was how she approached most things - if it interested her, try it out.

When Ita mentioned that her own parents were dead, James kinda looked up at her for a moment and then looked down. "It's kinda weird, ya know? Realizing that you're an orphan. It's sort of a funny feeling. Kinda like.. like even if though I wasn't close to my parents, to either of them, not like. ever.. there's still this sense of, I dunno... Alienation?"

He laughed a little and shook his head. "It's like being kicked out of a club or something." This was probably the most he had really talked about what he was feeling right now to anyone. But it was a little easier when it was someone who had been there too. Everybody else... The analogy would probably just make them think he was insane.

"You should try it." He shrugged his shoulders slightly. "If that's what you wanna do. I'm sure you can find plenty of volunteers around this place to test out your trial runs." The people in this place were absolutely carnivorous, for the most part. He himself had no appetite to speak of any more.

"Yeah... It was like, how can the world not simply end? How can it go on when things are so brutally different for you?" She sighed, remembering the pain of that time. And while she couldn't quite agree with the analogy, she didn't think it was inappropriate either.

Smiling, she said, "Well, I already cook rather well. It's the idea of using cooking as a means of creating magic that's kinda cool. Like, using the right herbs and such so that your turkey is really cooking up some loving, or something," she finished with a giggle. A romantic turkey? That was totally ridiculous. She had to cover her mouth to keep from giggling insanely; they were in a library.

"You must have been closer to yours than I was to mine." An observation and a correct one at that. He really didn't like his parents, either of them. But he had loved them both, in spite of himself. He hated himself for caring, especially about his father, and now they were both gone. The feeling that went with that was just... indescribable.

Cooking made him think of Cassandra for a moment and reminded him of how shitty he had been. She had done all she could to reach out to him, had been one of the first people that had been nice to him here, and he had pretty much blown her off completely as of late. But hopefully she would understand and forgive him that.

He smirked a little. "Romantic turkey." That really was an amusing concept, though he didn't have it in him to giggle quite the way that she did. He couldn't help but to notice that she had a nice smile, however, something he thought to compliment her on but then thought better about.

"So do you read a lot?" They were in a library. One would assume that. And he was open for recommendations.

Nodding, Ita's face was softened by the memory of her parents. In particular, she'd been close to her father. They were very similar. Her mother was softer, quieter than her father. Neither of her parents had been all that sociable since neither of them had been raised in the human world. It was almost odd how 'normal' Ita seemed by human standards. In any case, the blond had remembered her father as curious and adventurous, whereas her mother would silently watch from the sidelines.

When he said what she was thinking, her giggles renewed and she really had to clamp her hand down on her mouth. "Well, what's assigned..." she grinned sheepishly. She wasn't a brain by any stretch of the imagination. "I like movies and cooking. And stuff outside. What about you?"

If James had to say that he was like either of his parents, it would be his father, which was unfortunate for him and for everyone close to him. He didn't want to be anything like him, but nurture won out over nature every time. Children learned from example, and he couldn't really go back and change the example that was set for him.

James chuckled a little and nodded his head. "I am usually the same way." He had only recently started to read more. It had been a while, since college, but the library here had a really good selection, surprisingly enough, better than any other library he had gone to before. "I like movies, eating, and being in the sun." James teased her back, a hand reaching up to scratch his head. "Shopping. I like shopping, oddly enough." He was probably the one man in the world who enjoyed it more than his female companions for the most part.

He didn't have to be like his father. Ita was closest to her father because of her curiosity and adventurous nature. But even he had been quieter. She remembered him best as strong and quiet. She was neither.

"Ooo! Well I love to cook. And only sunbathing near water cuz I dry out. And it's not odd to like shopping. It's like giving a gift to yourself!" Thank goodness she'd never had the funds to become a spoiled brat. She very easily could have.

"You dry out?" That didn't make much sense, then again, there were plenty of things here that he didn't understand. He didn't know for sure what she was. Or had she mentioned it? He wasn't really sure. Apparently their elements were opposing, however.

"Oh but it's not just when it's for me. I like to shop for everyone. I like to go shopping with other people. I actually enjoy holding my girlfriend's bags while she's trying things on." He laughed a little and then shrugged his shoulders. "Not that I have one right now." But when he did, he had been the perfect shopping partner.

"Well, not literally. But it's uncomfortable. I'm a water elemental. What are you?" Ita loved meeting people of different races - they were all so interesting!

"Then it's like regular gift giving!" Now Ita was craving some good retail therapy. She had no need of therapy right now, but retail therapy was different - didn't need a reason! "We should totally go shopping together!" Tilting he head slightly, she gave him a rather obvious once over. "Well that's unusual. Can't imagine you'll stay single for long," she concluded. Her smile was flirtatious, and she started to walk away. He could join her or not.

"Might need to stay away from you then." James teased, a small smile gracing his lips. "Fire demon. One-quarter, anyways." Fire and water. She wasn't bad to look at. There was certainly the possibility that the two of them could create a little steam.

And it was apparent she was thinking the same thing, or at least somewhere along those lines, in the way that she looked at him. He smirked a little as she spoke, and then she turned and walked away. He laughed at the thought that illicited inside his head. Seems she was taking a chapter from the same book that Cissy Vallario always preached. Now the question became did he follow or did he let her leave?

After a few moments of debate, James decided to let her part, leaving the both of them curious about the other. It wasn't as if he wouldn't be in contact, or that she couldn't contact him if she so desired. So instead of following her, he moved up to the counter to check out his books.

When James explained his race, her smile faltered for a brief second and she paled visibly. Fire demon? She had kept away from the House of Fire for the most part. She had gone to see Xander that one time... But it wasn't like he was attacking her, or going to. The look quickly faded, however, and she moved on to the flirtatious glances.

She was definitely surprised when he didn't follow, but that was ok! She had to go make some friendship cupcakes. Time to try being a kitchen witch.
