Who: Simon and Jillian
What: Downtown Merriment
Where: Downtown
When: Saturday Afternoon

There was alcohol lining the streets. Quite literally. The local shops were celebrating the anniversary for discovering the finest romance beverage ever created- champagne. Some stores were making quite a hooplah about it, giving out small samples in cups (to of-age patrons only, unless the manager wasn't looking), selling candies, even giving out tiny platters of champagne Jello, the most bastardized version of the bubbly.

Simon had managed to snag a few samples, and was feeling the effects quite well in the heat. It was pleasant. He'd decided to go shopping for a ring, hopefully a cheap one. He was not a boy with much money. Either that, or he'd find himself a job down here. Whichever.

He finally came upon a nice jewelry store, one that didn't look too expensive but would still have nice stuff. He didn't want anything cheaply made. The door chimed as he walked in, and a sweet smell filled the air. he breathed it deeply.

"Champagne candle," the cashier explained. "Are you drunk?"
"No," he told her, making a face. But he kinda was. Just a little. Browsing though the array of shinies, he ignored the chime of the door as it opened again.

Wow. If Jillian had realized that there was some to do going on in town, she would have chosen to wait until Sunday to head out. Her plan had been to get to town, shop around for a couple of hours, and head back before nightfall. She needed desperately to replace her field kit and she wanted to get a couple of trinkets for friendship day. Sure, she was late, but it was the thought that counted, right?

She hadn't even realized that there was a friendship day, but now that she knew she wanted to get a couple of people presents. She needed to say thanks in a big way to Ita, especially.

Having successfully replaced her kit for less than she'd planned, getting a bag, flashlight, compass, knife, and canteen for less than fifty dollars, she decided to take the rest of the money and try to find those trinkets she'd hoped she could get. She'd taken a couple of samples herself, but nowhere near enough to be feeling the effects.

She opened the door of a nice little jewelry store, hoping to find something for Ita, when she nearly ran into someone standing near the door. Looking up, she gave a soft laugh. "Simon! Hello," she said, her voice friendly and surprised.

Simon spun around, confused. Upon seeing Jillian, though, his eyes widened. "Hey!" he said, a bit more loudly than intended. The pendant he'd been holding clattered onto the glass countertop. Smooth.

"Hi there," he said, sounding a lot less weird this time. "I was just, I was... y'know... what's up?" he babbled. He tugged on his t-shirt, smoothing it out some. "Did you know abut this champagne thing going on? I totally forgot about it, and when I got here there was just bubbles everywhere!" He smiled. "I tried some. It tasted kinda nasty, actually."

He realized he was babbling again, so he switched topics. "So what brings you here? Aside from jewelry. That much I could guess." God, he hoped he didn't sound as dumb as he felt. She'd really knocked him for a loop, though. He hadn't expected to see her, not now, especially not considering the circumstances. He was looking at a ring for Cissy, something to save up for, but then here was Jillian who... well, made him all twitchy. In a good way.

Jillian's eyes widened as she looked down to the necklace that had fallen onto the counter top. Glancing back up to Simon, she winced. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," she apologized, reaching up to push some of her loose hair back behind her ear.

"Hi," Jillian answered back, raising both eyebrows and giving a small smile as he babbled a little. She wasn't used to making anyone nervous, if that's what was going on. She tilted her head to the side, frowning a little. "No, actually, I forgot about it too...it's a bit annoying, frankly...I just needed to pick up a couple of things and there are people trying to give me alcohol everywhere. Any other night it would probably be okay," she chuckled.

"Oh, I'm just replacing my kit." She said, glancing down at the bag hanging from her side. "I l..lost my other one," she stuttered just a little, looking back up after a moment of staring at the bag. It wasn't a lie...she'd lost it off the side of a cliff. "And looking for something for Ita," the slight smile she'd had earlier was back as she turned and let her eyes skim the jewelry case for something good. "What are you doing here?" she asked, looking back at him.

"Oh, you didn't scare me, I was just... well... I was just." He smiled simply. "You startled me," he clarified. He picked up the necklace and replaced it on one of those little metal trees jewelry stores always hang necklaces from. At least now his hands were steadier. He took a calming breath. She's just a girl, he told himself. And a nice one, too. Stop acting like such a spaz.

He looked down at her bag, a little confused. What kind of kit did she mean? A medic's kit? Or a model airplane kit. Ooh! Or some kind of satanic ritual kit! At that one he giggled out loud. "Uh, what's in there?" he asked, trying to cover uop his seemingly random laughter. "What kind of kit?"

Simon tried to think whether or not he knew Ita. Well, maybe she was the blonde girl with big eyes he'd seen Jillian with sometimes around school. They'd seemed friendly enough. "Really?" he asked. "She must be a pretty good friend if you're coming in here for her present. I just gave people origami." He wanted to explain to Jillian that it was awesome, intricate origami that he'd worked pretty hard on. But in all actuality, it was just lame folded paper.

"I didn't?" she asked, doubt in her eyes until he did admit that she startled him. Her small smile returned and she nodded. "Well, I'm sorry that I startled you. I won't do it again, scout's honor," she promised, holding up two fingers. Tilting her head, she glanced at the necklace he had been looking at. "That was really pretty, by the way."

Wrinkling her nose, her smile growing at the giggle, she couldn't help but laugh a little herself. "Um, oh, it's a field kit. For hiking and climbing. Flashlight, compass, that sort of thing." She murmured. Despite Caibre's attack, she wasn't planning on abandoning the great outdoors. She just needed a few more days to get ready to head back out.

Jillian smiled, her eyes lighting up. "Yeah, she's a very good friend," she nodded, before glancing at the jewelry case. "I'm not really sure I can afford anything in here, but I was hoping to find something." She tilted her head for a moment and then smiled. "Wow, that's a neat idea...and really creative. The only thing I could do like that is write poetry, and well, that's a little embarrassing," she admitted. "People always like things that take a little effort, you know? Anyone with ten bucks can buy something for someone." Suddenly, she wondered if she should make Ita something instead.

"Oh, what, this?" he asked, fingering the necklace. "Yeah, it's pink and pretty. Appeals to the female masses." He shrugged, knowing nothing from jewelry. As far as he knew, all it had to do was shine and sparkle and the ladies would appreciate it.

"Oh, so you hike?" he asked. "Wait, I think I knew that. You were out hiking the last time I crashed into you." He grinned, remembering how, literally, she'd walked right into him while he was walking on his hands in the forest.

The bubbles from the champagne were popping in his brain. It felt fuzzy and nice. He looked at Jillian, taking in her smile, her dark hair, the clear brightness of her face. And since he seemed to be a little buzzed, he decided to make or break his day. Simon leaned in, hesitated for just a second, then gently pressed his lips to Jillian's.

"It'd be better in green, though," Jillian murmured before letting her eyes travel to the cases again. Not every girl liked shiny and sparkly. Jillian herself barely wore any jewelry, save a silver ring on her right pinkie. That was a present from her best friend back home, Andrew, and there was nothing special about it besides who had given it to her.

"Well, yeah," she answered, laughing softly. "I think I ran into you, though. It happens a lot, unfortunately, the whole me running into things thing," Jillian explained. She took a deep breath, looking down at the case again. The prices weren't too bad here...maybe she could find something for Ita.

Sensing movement, Jillian turned and looked back to Simon, watching him for a second. Despite the fact that she was psychic, she couldn't have predicted his next move. She was stuck for a second, startled, and after a moment she pulled back, her surprise showing on her face. She just...Simon just...

Blinking for a second, she gave the smallest of smiles as she realized something. "Are you...have you been drinking the champagne?" she asked. It wasn't meant to be a mean question, just one of confusion. She'd only met Simon once before, so him kissing her was a complete shock. He hadn't really struck her as the forward kind of guy. She wasn't entirely sure how she felt about it either. She didn't really even know Simon, and there was Vinnie...

Green, eh? Simon had always thought pink was a sure thing with girls. Like diamonds, or gold. He had noticed the silver ring on Jillian's pinky, and had thought it was kinda cute.

When Jillian reared back in surprise, Simon just stared at her dumbly. Had he just... Yes, he had. Why would he do something like that? Well, there was no going back on it now. Sydni and he had just talked about it the night before how he had to find out or he'd regret it forever. But then Jillian asked if he'd been drinking. Here was a golden opportunity to chalk it off to champagne, to act like he didn't know what he was doing and that it was a mistake.

"No," he told her. "Well, okay yes, I did have a few samples. But they're not why..." His words faltered. He'd never had to do this before, especially not in front of some cashier who was watching him with extreme interest. No doubt this was more interesting than her job. "Jillian," he began, a dark blush creeping up his neck, "I think you're beautiful. Every time I see you I feel all stupid and tongue-tied, and I just... I had to know. What it would be like, what you'd think.I didn't want to regret it forever."

He looked over her shoulder at the nosy cashier. "Are you getting paid for this?!?" he snapped. As the flustered busybody went back to her duties, Simon looked back at Jillian. "So... that's it, I guess."

Jillian was one of those rare girls who didn't like jewelry save for the sparest kind. Plain silver bands and bracelets, small necklaces, that sort of thing. Pink was almost right out. Pink looked good on some girls, but her? Not so much.

Surprise had caused her to jump back, more so than any actual dislike for Simon. That would be unfair, because frankly, she didn't know him! Her own face flushed as she reached up to brush her hair back and look down at the case, but not at anything in particular. She listened to Simon explain and she felt the flush deepen. She reached up to rub the back of her neck, frowning softly when Simon snapped at the cashier.

Looking back up at Simon, she inclined her head to the door and then she took a few steps towards it. "Do you want to go out and talk?" she asked. "We can grab a coffee or something," she suggested. She only thought it was fair to talk to Simon a little before she made any decisions. Truth be told, she admired his bravery. As much as she felt you should just outright tell someone when you liked them, it could be really difficult sometimes.

"Coffee? Yeah, okay." He didn't drink coffee, in fact found it very gross. But the beverage wasn't the point, now was it?

As they pushed through the door into the outside world, a wave of fresh air swept over Simon. He hadn't realized how stuffy it had become in the jewelry store. Walking beside Jillian was awkward and weird. And it was all his fault. But he had to say something because otherwise it'd be like a horrible romance movie and where the guy never tells the girl he likes and then he regrets it forever and becomes a big loser who never loves again. Simon gave a sidelong glance to Jillian and giggled. Of course, now it was like a bad teen movie where he has spilled his guts, and everything was ruined forever.

"Tension's fun, huh?" he asked, in explaination of his giggling. "Look, Jillian, I know this is really weird and I'm really sorry to just spring this on you. But there's somethin about you that just... from the minute I met you, like this... strong attraction." He averted his gaze to the ground before them. "And I know it's really embarassing, almost creepy to hear me say stuff like this about you. But I promise, you can't be half as mortified as I am right now."

He smiled kindly, managing to look at her for at least ten seconds before wussing out. "And that's my late Friendship Day present to you- no matter what happens today, I will always be 100% more mortified than you will ever be."

Coffee was one of those drinks that served as an excuse. Getting coffee, of course, was rarely about the coffee. Jillian didn't really like to drink coffee, either. She was a tea kind of girl. Maybe an Italian soda? She remembered that there was that nice little ice cream shop. They might have coffee and other stuff.

Jillian looked to the side to Simon and smiled, hoping she wasn't weirding him out by not talking yet. She wanted a minute to think, to consider what was going on. Where she was in this whole thing. Her smile widened as she looked over to Simon, and she raised an eyebrow, as if asking what he was giggling about.

"Sorry, yeah, it's pretty much how I endure social situations," she answered and then she shook her head, but she let him finish. Considering what he said, she smiled softly. "No, it's not weird. I admire you for having the guts to just come out and say it." She shrugged. "Given that I can hear what people think sometimes, it's really not that creepy, Simon," Jillian murmured. That was the truth.

She smiled back at Simon, a concerned look crossing her face. "Don't be mortified, please," she asked, feeling a little bad. Sure she felt put on the spot, but she really did admire Simon for his guts. Glancing up at the ice cream shop, she nodded to it. "Want to grab a drink in there?"

Simon looked up at the shop. "Ice cream? Good call. I have to admit, I kinda hate coffee. Even coffee ice cream. But I bet they'll have vanilla bourbon milkshakes, which are good." Holding open the door for Jillian to enter, he smiled shyly. "I don't think they use real bourbon, so no worries about more drunken kissing." He had meant it as a joke, but perhaps it was too soon to joke about that stuff. Because as soon as it had come out, he wished he hadn't said it at all.

Hoping to gloss over his faux pas, he went up to the counter and placed his order. "So, ah... to be honest I've only ever been on one date before, so I don't really know what to talk about." Oops. "Not that this is a date," he added hastily. "Unless you want it to be. But no pressure." Well now he was just confused. "Is this supposed to be a date?" he asked. "Because I wasn't prepared for one, and if it is I feel I am being unfairly represented."

Jillian smiled, feeling a little relieved that he didn't want coffee. She knew that there was a coffee shop around here somewhere, but she'd had a gut instinct that ice cream would be the better choice. Who didn't like ice cream? Plus, it was the place she and Ita had gone, and she knew it had some places to sit down. She stepped in and then grinned back at Simon. The comment was cute, even if it caused her to blush a little.

She walked into the shop and then looked back at Simon. "Yeah, me too. I don't really date so to speak." Pausing for a second, she shrugged. "I just want to get to know you. It's really unfair of me to not give you a chance, isn't it?" she asked, smiling. "Besides, even if we don't date, I'd like to be your friend...if you want to, that is?" She needed to let him know that she was...kind of seeing someone else? Or rather, wanted to see someone else and was currently seeing someone else...

Then again, it all sounded like a mess.

"Yeah, sure, I could use more friends," he said honestly as Jillian ordered. "I only really have one, so to speak." Now that wasn't true. It would be best to be honest about this whole ordeal, no? "Well," he continued sheepishly, "I kinda have two. Sydni is a friend who is just a friend. And, uh... well, Cissy is almost a girlfriend." He winced. "I know, it's kind of sleazy of me to be sort of dating her but here with you."

"I just didn't think it would be fair to be all... I dunno..." He couldn't seem to find the right words for it. "I just had to know. You know? Because what if we.. you and I... well, what if. And then it'd be an even bigger mess." Simon buried his hands in his pockets sheepishly. "Unlike the mess we've got now."

"Me too," she murmured, flashing him a small smile. She only had Ita, really. Kate had been nice and Selene was proving to be helpful, but she wouldn't consider them her bosom buddies. Since she was used to having guy friends, the idea of being good friends with Simon sounded nice to her. Even if he was interested in her for more than just friendship. She tilted her head and then smiled at him when he mentioned Cissy. "Oh? Is that who you were looking at the necklace for?"

She paused, listening to him talk, reaching into her pocket to pay the bill when she reached the cash register. "No, I mean, yeah, I know what you mean. I'm...well, I'm sort of seeing someone right now. I really like him, but we've only been on one date so far." She sighed and then looked back at Simon. "So yeah, this can be a not-date. Just...hanging out?" she asked, trying not to let Simon down in a way that would hurt his feelings. "It's not a mess," Jillian said, pursing her lips for a second as she thought. "It's just...a bad time?" she asked, her voice hesitant.

"Bad time is right," he agreed, taking a sip of his beverage. "This whole week has been a crazy mess and I don't know if I'll ever sleep again." He smiled at her. "Thanks, by the way, for paying. You didn't have to."

It was actually kind of a relief to not be on a date. It was also kind of heartbreaking that Jillian was seeing someone. It didn't actually give him a fair chance if right off the bat she was interested in someone else. But wasn't he in a kind of relationship, too? This was certainly not how he'd pictured spending time with Jillian, but it was better than nothing. "So tell me about this guy," he inquired. "I promise to only be mildly jealous."

Jillian smiled before she sipped her own drink. She made a small frown as he mentioned that his week had been awful. She didn't like to hear that from anyone, especially her friends. Her smile returned, though, as she spoke. "Don't mention it."

Looking up, Jillian grinned as she found them a seat. She slipped into the booth and then considered for a second. How could she describe Vinnie? "Well...he's really sweet, and he doesn't think that my clumsiness is anything to mock." She laughed. "He also has a really nice sense of humor...and, well, he's fun and cute." She shrugged, feeling a blush on her cheeks rise. "Tell me about your girl?" she asked, leaning her face on her hands.

Simon listened as she spoke about Vinnie, nodding in the appropriate places. It was obvious that Jillian was smitten, and it was actually very cute. Yeah, there was no chance for him with this girl. Pleasantly, though, when Jillian asked about Cissy he felt a familiar warmth spread to his heart, and realized he was probably smiling like a doofus... kind of the same smile Jillian had just had.

Cissy is, well... I think she's Vinnie's cousin, actually." He took a drink of his milkshake and tried to place Cissy into words. "She's a diasaster," he said honestly, but with no short amount of fondness in his voice. "She's needy and unsure and doesn't know anything about what she wants to be." He chuckled a little. "It's wonderful." Simon put his glass down, talking with his hands animated, not a usual trait of his. "She looks like she's one thing but she's really another and I might be the only person in the world who knows that." He shook his head. "That's pretty intense, actually. To have someone trust you that much?" It had never occurred to him before how much trust Cissy had been placing in him by being honest about herself. And here he was, out on a not-date with someone he had hoped to be on an actual date with. Was that betrayal?

"I dunno," he summarized. "Shes pretty... something."
