Week 16- Sunday
Who: Simon and Sydni
What: Dinner
Where/When: Cafeteria, midevening

At the buffet of life there are eaters and there are starvers. Simon was an eater. One great thing about coming from a good Christian home was his mother believed that a good meal was necessary at least 3 times a day. Sion could eat more than any one person had the right to. It all went to his metabolism, but you'd swear there was a black hole in his gut somewhere hiding all the food. He smiled widely as he carried a overly full tray back to his empty table. A heaping of salad with raisins and french dressing on top, a thick balogna and swiss sandwich, a sloppy joe for good measure, a full-to-the-brim orange soda and some type of apple pastry for dessert. More than likely he would be going back for more, but this was a good start.

It was pretty humid out, the perfect kind of night where you sit inside in the AC and enjoy modern technology. It was also the perfect kind of night to take a stroll outside while the sun wasn't out to burn your face off. But nuts to that- there was artificial cold to be had! That and sloppy joes.

Simon parked himself at his lonely table, although today he didn't mind the solitude. He'd gotten himself a great deal of food, and planned on stuffing himself silly with it. Starting a new life made one quite hungry all the time, he realized. The only friends he'd really made were girls, and it would've been a bit embarassing for one of them to see him chowing down like this.

Sydni was in an excellent mood. After her successful 'expedition' with Serghei the previous day, she was riding on cloud 9. Even all day at work she'd been more effervescent than usual, and had spent her break cataloging the information she'd gathered. Rather than doing her homework. Oops. But even still, she couldn't feel guilty or even stressed. She was having too good a day.

It was in this mood that she made her way to the Dining Hall for dinner. She also had a wonderfully healthy appetite. Her tray, however, was a bit less, uh, meaty. Perhaps surprising for a werewolf, but she had discovered long ago that a diet with less meat kept her feeling healthier. So, her tray was loaded with a heaping salad, more veggies than lettuce, and a hommus wrap with more veggies. She did eat more now than ever before, as evidenced by the two complete meals on her plate; either could have made a complete meal on its own .

Scanning the caf quickly, Sydni recognized a familiar face. A boy... Simon! That was his name. He was sitting alone, and rather than do the same, Sydni decided to join him. Simon really had no reason to be embarrassed about his meal. Sydni could have met his meal bite for bite. She was a were after all - her healthy appetite doubled since her change.

"Hey, Simon. Do you mind if I join you?"

He felt a little stupid, what with sloppy joe sauce all over his lips while Sydni was smiling sweetly and asking politely to join. Under normal circumstances, Simon would've melted into the floor and been gone from sight forever. But Sydni was a cool cat, so he knew she wouldn't mind the chowfest. Besides, she had a hefty plate herself. It was full or healthier and lighter (girlie) foods, but it was still heaping.

"Yeah, come on," he drawled, wiping his face with a napkin. Gesturing to all the empty chairs, he said "I'll see if I can squeeze you in amongst my enrourage." He watched with a grin as Sydni took a seat.

"So, Sydni, how was your day today?" She was being kind enough to sit with him, so he felt that he, as a host, should make her feel welcomed and comfortable. Not that he would've had to work on that fact anyway. It was obvious as daylight that Simon was pleased to see Sydni again, and even more pleased that she'd remembered his name and sought him out.

Sydni would hardly have called her food girlie. Perhaps lighter, but not girlie. She just preferred vegetables. They made her feel healthier and more energized. Besides, she didn't consider herself a very feminine woman. She almost never wore typical girlie clothes like skirts or other very feminine clothing. A lot of her activities were not very feminine, either. The sleepover with Shaye (Davia) had been the single most girlie thing she'd ever done. And she'd never really done anything like that before.

Chuckling at his comment about his entourage, Sydni grabbed a seat from which she could see the entrance to the cafeteria. "Rather good, actually. I worked, at the surf shop. But I was compiling some data from my dive yesterday. I mean, just basics. Photos and species count. When I have a better crew and equipment, I get better data. So, hopefully, I'll be able to focus tonight and get some actual, you know, school work done." She knew she would. She was too responsible not to, but it didn't mean she wouldn't put it off until late at night.

"What about you? I saw your post. I hope she's a sweet girl." She smiled gently at him. He was a sweet guy. He deserved a sweet girl.

Simon turned a shade of red not known to man before. Seriously, Sydni should have taken a picture of his face and sent it to Revlon for a color patent. There was nothing wrong with his date, or the kiss, but he still felt very strange about the whole ordeal. Like it was taboo, and he was a celebrity whose personal life was being put out on display. Of course, he'd been the one to put it there in the first place. Moron, he scolded himself.

"Oh, yeah, well," he stammered. "I don't know if I would call her 'sweet'. Or, even a 'girl', really. She's too mature to be a girl... Okay, that sounded kind of lame. But she's not like a kid. She's twenty-one." Simon worried for a moment that Sydni would think this whole ordeal kind of creepy. Truth be told, Simon wasn't even sure what to make of it. He knew that his date had been nothing short of strange, and that he was too young to be involved with someone like that. Hell, he wasn't even sure they were considered 'involved'. He didn't know what they were.

"Maybe you know her?" Simon asked, hoping that maybe Sydni could shed some light on the girl. It was a long shot, but worth taking. "Do you know Cissy Vallario?"

Sydni felt bad as soon as Simon started turning red. She didn't think it was that personal since he had posted it, but apparently it was a bit of a touchy subject for him. If she'd known, she wouldn't have asked. She hated it when people prodded her for personal information, and she was pretty good about treating others as she preferred to be treated.

Well, that wasn't a girl. That was much too old for Simon. It only worried Sydni because she didn't want Simon to get hurt. Maybe the girl - woman - thought he was cute or entertaining, but in the end he'd get hurt if that were the case. There was more to Simon than cute or entertaining and he deserved someone who could see that. Her concern showed a bit on her face, but she tried to keep it mild, as she'd rather not make Simon feel any more uncertain than he sounded.

Pausing, Sydni tried to process that information. She didn't 'know' Cissy, but Frankie didn't like her, and they were cousins. Plus, she seemed like a bitch in the journals. She hesitated, but she decided that passing on nasty rumors would be a bad idea. "I don't know her, no. I've heard bad things about her, but well, same goes for me, so I don't know I'd trust that. She was nice to you though?" That was all that mattered. If she was nice to him... Well, other than that it was probably illegal... How old was Simon?

Simon's face fell a little. It wasn't all that surprising that people did not like Cissy- she seemed the type for sure. Some would badmouth her because they were jealous, some would think her amoral, and some could just clash with the diva type. Simon wasn't sure what he thought yet. Normally those girls weren't his type, but he hadn't had enough experience to restrict himself to a type.

"I don't know her very well either," he admitted, "but she took me out awhile ago. She was nice. Kind of high-maintenance, but nice." It was apparent Sydni was either uncomfortable discussing this topic or discussing the person, so Simon decided enough about his social life.

"So," he asked saucily, peeling the crust off his bologna sandwich, "how about you, Sydni? Any lucky fellows banging down your door?" He put on a smirk to let her know he was kidding, that she didn't have to answer seriously if she didn't want to. But she still could, if she felt like it. Simon wasn't much above idle gossip.

Seeing the disappointment on Simon's face, Sydni felt a little bad for letting her objections show or even saying anything bad. "She took you out?" Well, maybe it wasn't so bad. Sydni couldn't help but buy in to the stereotype that a girl like Cissy would expect the guy to take her out. "I'm glad she was nice. Think you'll have another date with her?" She wasn't trying to encourage Simon to see Cissy again, cuz she still had a bit of foreboding about it, but she wanted to show genuine interest to make up for making him feel uncomfortable.

Blushing, Sydni poked at her salad a bit, but couldn't hide her gentle smile. But it faltered a bit. He wasn't exactly knocking down her door. The smile turned a bit sad, wistful almost. "No, not really," she answered finally. She couldn't help it, really. Charlie was stealing her heart a little more each day. It was stupid, but she couldn't stop herself. It was really just a rather strong crush. But it still hurt a bit that she didn't have a chance. She couldn't imagine anyone stealing his heart. And even if there were someone, that someone would be more interesting, and beautiful, than herself.

"I might ask her out again," Simon replied, keeping his response vague. He didn't think Sydni approved of him and Cissy, and although it didn't matter he still didn't want to make her uncomfortable. Besides, he had something a little... devious planned, and didn't want to shatter Sydni's image of him.

Sydni blushed and it was really cute. Simon knew he shouldn't think of her like that, because they were just friends, but come on! Girls blushing was just too damn cute not to appreciate. She looked wistful, though. As if remembering a love lost at sea. Before the mental image of Sydni standing at the bow of a ship, sobbing overboard for her lost pirate love (bosom heaving, of course) could pop into his head, Simon put on his most devious smirk.

"Liar," he grinned. "There is no way a cool chick like you doesn't have to fend off the male species with a stick. You're just being modest so my enormous crush on you doesn't make me feel like just another lovesick pup at your feet." He batted his eyelashes, smiling sappily at Sydni. "Ah, l'amore," he crooned. Passersby would need to take heed, as instant vomiting might result from overhearing the conversation.

Smiling kindly, Sydni couldn't help but let her hopeless romanticism run away with her. Maybe nice guy Simon would be able to help Cissy find whatever it was that was missing in her life. Unlikely, but maybe.

Chuckling, Sydni merely replied, "Oh yes, men are fighting over me in the streets." She rolled her eyes. Men hardly noticed her, to be honest. It was the way she preferred it. She liked being able to blend in to a crowd unnoticed. If she received as much attention as she was joking about, she would have fainted from all the blood rushing to her face constantly. Or with a concussion. Her serious lack of grace around Serghei was proof of that.

Trying to shift the focus from herself, she countered his question. "And what about you? Toutes les femmes doivent t'adorer, n'est-ce pas?" ((All the women must adore you, yes?)) Grinning, she let him flounder for a minute with the translation before she offered, "Only Cissy? Must be others." Her smile grew and she drank some of her water as she waited for his answer. If he wanted to dish it out, he better be ready to take it. That's how Sydni always played when she was with friends.

"Well, those guys in the streets better back off," he smiled, trying to look faux-fierce. "I've staked a claim in you and I won't go down without a fight." To emphasize, he pretended to plant a small flag on Sydni's forehead. "Clamied in the name of mild infatuation," he declared.

Sydni started spouting French and Simon was at a loss. He'd taken German in high school. There were a few words he understood- "femme", girl; "adorer", something like love or adore. But he got the basic gist when Sydni asked if Cissy was his one and only. "Well, CIssy's the only date so far. Only kiss." He blushed again, looking not embarassed but giddy. "I was hoping Cissy'd be enough to satiate your feminine need to know. But since you asked, there is someone else I've kinda... well... noticed."

He thought back to when he'd first met Jillian. It felt like he'd been punched in the gut with beauty. He wouldn't call it love, not quite, but definitely more than mere noticing. Admiration, maybe. "Her name's Jillian," he explained to Sydni, trying not to sound too dreamy over the whole affair.

Sydni chuckled at the 'claim' planted on her forehead. "I see." Simon was a funny kid. She liked him. She hadn't been around young people in a long time before she came here, but guys like Simon and Jesse reminded her of how much fun being around young people was.

Smiling at his blush Sydni listened to his confession with that gentle smile on her lips. "Yeah? How do you know her?" Sydni didn't know the young woman, but she hoped the girl was sweet. Simon needed a sweet girl.

It was true, Simon was a funny kid. He was very young in the best way possible, the kind of way that made older people miss being young and being able to act so carefree. He must've inherited his youthful ways from his father, because Adrianne Curtis was a severe woman who rarely cracked a smile anymore.

"Well," he began," all too happy to talk about Jillian, "I met her in the woods last Saturday. I'm trying to learn something new every day. Today I read up online how to make an origami star." He pulled a squished one out of his pocket to emphasize. It wasn't very good, but unmistakeably a star. "Last Saturday I was teaching myself how to walk on my hands, and, well, she just sorta crashed into me." He smiled fondly. "She was really nice. We talked about X-Men and stuff."

It was all too obvious that Simon was crushing on this chick, and he was crushing hard. For a romantic like Syni seemed to be, the only response to the situation would be the sappy Awwww. Simon realized he was babbling like a moron with a crush (which he was) and straightened up. "So, ah, aside from Cissy that's the only other person I've really met. And my undying devotion to you goes without saying, of course." He winked at her, then pulled out his best Alabama accent. "Sum daye ah weyll mayrree yew, Sid-nee. Ah weyll."

Sydni was impressed with Simon's determination to improve himself. She wondered vaguely if Simon had gotten to meet Miklos. He might have liked the young man who made it a point to learn something new every day. "That's really quite impressive, Simon. Trying to learn something new every day." She smiled approvingly. Simon was more than just a sweet guy - he was interesting.

Chuckling, Sydni tried to clarify, "She crashed into you? Or the other way around?" Hey, the X-men were cool. And fitting for this school. Wolverine was her favorite, but she'd always liked Gambit, too, and was disappointed that he wasn't in the most recent films. Of course, the movies didn't seem to follow the comic books all that well, at all. But she could appreciate them as good movies in and of themselves.

She did awww internally. She didn't want to embarrass Simon. But now she needed to find out about Jillian. She hoped she was as cool as Simon thought, and hopefully closer to Simon's age than Cissy. Laughing again, Sydni shook her head and observed, "You are ridiculous, Simon. But that's awesome."

Finishing up the last of her meal, Sydni pondered dessert. Ice cream sounded awesome right now. She had just had some with Shaye on Friday, but ice cream was one of those things that she could have every day. "I'm thinking a brownie sundae sounds awesome since they have brownies today, and the ice cream bar is right there. What do you think?" See, she didn't only eat healthy food.

"No, she crashed into me," he assured her. "I was walking upside down," he began, using his left hand to show his path of motion, "and my shirt fell over my head so I couldn't see her coming, but I heard her." The right hand began idling toward the left in a loopy fashion, sort of wandering all over the tabletop. "I guess she was spaced out because before I knew it, wham! Collision." The two hands naturally collided, the right staying upright and dainty and the left falling flat on its face.

Ridiculous? he wondered to himself. It was so odd, because no one in Alabama would have ever called him ridiculous. Serious, maybe. But then again, he had never opened up much back home. All the random musings he'd shared with Sydni were usually kept in his head. So yes, he supposed, he was ridiculous.

As soon as Sydni mentioned ice cream, his face lit up. "See, this is exactly why I will spend the rest of my days pineing for you," he explained. "You're a woman of brilliance." He followed Sydni up to the dessert table, putting two brownies on his own plate. Then came three types of ice cream (vanilla, mint chocolate chip and butter pecan to be exact), a river of chocolate sauce and some more raisins from the salad bar.

Getting settled back at the table, Simon decided that maybe he would ask Sydni for advice. He hadn't wanted to before because it involved Cissy, but maybe if he were slick enough she wouldn't even realize. "Have you ever been to Heaven and Hell?" he asked making an attempt at casual. "What's it like?"

Chuckling, Sydni couldn't but to think that regardless of the explanation, it sounded more like Simon had crashed into Jillian, and not the other way around.

Seeing the young man's face light up, Sydni grinned and headed up to the dessert table. "Well, I don't know about that. But I do have occasional flashes of insight," she retorted. One brownie, a bit of Oreo ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and more Oreo crumbles over the top. She didn't normally like brownies herself, but in an ice cream sundae, they were heaven.

"Oh, no I've never been there. I've heard a lot about it though." She eyed Simon knowingly. "You know, the age requirement is 18. And if you go... Hell is a pretty nasty place I've heard. Lots of drugs and such. Stay up in Heaven, on the top floor. You know, if you make age minimum." Hey, she could totally support rebellion. Just, she would always add a word of caution. "You going with someone?" It would be safer if someone wen with him.

"Actually," he replied smoothly, bringing another spoonful of brownie sundae to his lips, "I was thinking of taking a date there. We'd probably just stay in Heaven anyway. I just wanted to check out the scene." He was trying to sound aloof, but in actuality his heart was thudding in his chest. Was he really so transparent that Sydni knew right away what he was getting at? Well if that was the case, he might as well go for broke.

"I'm seventeen," he told her honestly, though he was sure she already knew he was underage. "But I don't think getting inside would be too big a deal, with some connections." Was he actually sounding as cool out loud as was in his head? Doubtful. "I'm hoping to find a fake id to get in. I don't want to get drunk or high or anything, I just... I'd like to take her somewhere cool. Better than McDonalds or something because that's really the only place you can go when you're underage." He suddenly wasn't in the mood for ice cream anymore. He pushed the bowl away, pouting. Despite his new lifestyle and newfound freedom, he was still just a kid.

It wasn't that he was so transparent. Just, if he was asking, he probably wanted to go, and it would make sense for him to go with a friend. Or a date. "Sounds like a good date," Sydni said with a smile. "Just, stay smart, you know? If you do drink or whatever, make sure you take a cab home. Even if you drove down."

At the assurance that he didn't plan on getting drunk or high, Sydni smiled, pleased that he didn't want to mess around with that. "Well, just stay aware of your surroundings. I don't think Heaven is so bad, but still." His sudden change in attitude and expression concerned Sydni. Had she said something wrong? "I'm sorry," she quickly offered. "I just wanna make sure you're safe, that's all." Looking down at her own ice cream, she poked at it a bit, before asking tentatively, "What's wrong?"

"Being underage sucks," he said frankly. "I'm one of the youngest people here. In high school, being seventeen was awesome. I was at the top of the totem pole, you know?" He stirred his ice cream into a brown puddle. "But here... well, I just turned 17 in April. I have a long wait ahead of me." It had been like this a lot growing up. Having no siblings, he'd been the only child in a world full of grown-ups.

"Thanks for worrying, though," he said sincerely. "It's nice to know someone's got my back." After all, that's what friends were for, and he was super happy to have a friend. Even if she was a bit older and made him feel like a little kid in comparison.

A wonderful thought occurred to him. "Hey, I just had a thought!" he declared. "Would you come with me to Heaven?" This was an exciting prospect. "You could make sure I don't overdo it my first time there, and you'd get to go for a first time as well. That way I can be prepared for when I go there on a date and not look like a total goob who doesn't know what he's doing. And we'd have a ton of fun!" He grinned hopefully. "How about it, Sydni? Please?"

Sydni nodded. "It really sucked in college - some of my friends were underage and we'd go to bars and have to leave at like 9 since no one under 21 was allowed after 9." Sydni had also grown up as an only child, but she had always felt more comfortable with adults anyway.

She really didn't mean to make him feel like a kid. Simon was awesome to hang around. However, Sydni couldn't hide her surprise at the proposal. After a moment, er face brightened, and she said, "Sure. Why not? What day?" She had always thought her first adventure to the club would be with Charlie. But hey, now she'd get a chance to stop and see Shaye, as well. "Just... You know it's not a date right? Just a couple of friends having a good time." She didn't want to sound harsh, but going out with Simon would feel weird if she didn't make certain that point was clear.

Simon stared at her good and hard for at least 30 seconds. When he decided she was serious, he chuckled. "Sydni... it'd be pretty tacky of me to take you on a date to scope out a place where I plan on taking someone else on a date." He held up his right hand. "But I solemnly swear that this is not a date. Unless, of course, you get me drunk and take advantage of me. Then I demand commitment."

"Ok, so now that that is settled. First order of business- I can't even get into the club without a believeable ID. And I have no idea how to go about obtaining one anyway. Any thoughts?"

It was exhilirating, breaking the law. He could get caught. He could get arrested. He could be kicked out of school. Now he understood why people shoplifted- it defined who you were and what you were capable of.

Ok, so for being a scientist, sometimes simple logic escaped Sydni. Including how tacky that would be. Blushing a bit, Sydni chuckled, "Good point. And I promise not to get you drunk."

"Um, you'd have to ask around. I honestly don't know how to get one. I'm sure someone around here makes them, or knows where to find them. Charlie might know, or Frankie. Frankie's in our House, but both she and Charlie are old enough - they wouldn't need one."

Well, Sydni would hardly agree to this if she thought they'd get arrested or kicked out of school. The bouncer might take the ID and threaten them, but she doubted anything more would happen. It was unlikely that they'd go to jail, since there didn't seem to be a police force ehre, and getting kicked out of school was even less likely - she'd been in a fight and that was more serious than trying to get into a bar illegally.

Sure, ruin Simon's hopes and dreams of being a felon! Well, regardless of if their actions would yield actual dire consequences, Simon felt like a renegade all the same.

"Okay then, here's the plan: I'll ask around, see what I can find out. Once that's taken care of, we'll plan on a when." He got up and gathered his ice cream bowl. Before going to dump his dishes into the wash line, he smiled at Sydni. "You're a very cool girl," he told her honestly. "Helping me corrupt myself. Too bad you're not ten years younger, huh?"

He carried his things to their proper place and made way for the exit. "One true love, Sydni!" he yelled back to her as he reached the cafeteria doors. He grinned like a doofus. "You and me, love." He winked, blew her a kiss, then disappeared out into the hallway.
