Week 15, Saturday
Who: Jillian and Simon
When: Saturday Late Afternoon
Where: Outdoors at the School
What: Wandering around outside

Jillian might have been exhausted, but it would have taken a lot more than sheer exhaustion to make her stay in her room longer than a good sleep cycle. She'd managed to sleep for sixteen straight hours after she'd gotten back from the beach. Taking a break for a bit of food, she fell back into bed for another fourteen hours and she'd still felt drained when she awoke, but she couldn't just lie in bed. No, it was driving her nuts staring at the ceiling, even if she was bone tired. She thought about seeing what Ita was up to, but she remembered that Ita was surfing today with Xander, who probably wasn't feeling tired in the slightest.

Jillian had made a lot of claims before about needing to be dragged out of her room, but it wasn't really the case at all. She needed to be dragged from her solitude more than anything else. So she pulled herself out of bed, took a long shower, and dressed. Throwing on a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt, she slipped on her sandals and made her way out of Zephir House.

Walking slowly, she padded down the pathway away from the school. Pausing, she looked at the landscape around her, trying to decide on where she wanted to go. Gardens? Forest? Beach? Did it matter? She just felt like walking. Getting out of bed. Heading off in a random direction, she walked, clearing her head of all thoughts until she was just walking and nothing else. Thankfully, she was tired enough that she couldn't make out a single outside thought. What was normally a rather annoying rumble of voices in her head was a pleasant buzz instead. So, clearly, exhaustion was a way to quiet up the voices. Who knew?

Winding her way down a path and then picking her way across the ground, disappearing into the trees, Jillian was so focused on walking and enjoying the scenery that she didn't realize that she relied so heavily on her powers to tell when someone was near. That being said, when someone came close, she didn't see them, and just kept moving, humming a little as she walked.

As a matter of fact, someone was walking towards Jillian. Unfortuantely for the both of them, neither could tell when the other was coming. Simon had woken up that morning and decided that he was going to learn how to walk on his hands. It was part of this new lifestyle he was determined to acquire. Every day he would learn something new. Yesterday, he'd learned that a lot of sailors would see sea cows and think they were meremaids. Oh, the things you can learn in children's books.

His hands were sore from his many attempts at wakling on them. Well, that and the random nature debris that littered the forest floor. He'd been having a lot of strange encounters on the beach, most of which included his being tripped over. Today he decided to scope out the forest. It looked quiet and peaceful, and the odds of someone stumbling over him were pretty slim.

Oh boy, was he wrong. Apparently the beach is not the only place a person can simply walk without thinking. While Simon took a few tentative steps on his palms, wobbling a bit to keep balance, his faded grey t-shirt slid down over his face obstructing any view he hoped to have. But there was no time for him to fix it- he was on a roll! Five steps already without falling over. That is, until he heard the humming. It was tough to stay still while on his hands, but if there were some kind of horrible thing awaiting him in the woods, Simon didn't want to make noise so as to make his presence known. His eyes strained to see through his nearly threadbare shirt. A figure was approaching- and it was humming!

He toppled over most ungracefully, shouting out "Holey crahp!" in his most unrestrained Alabama accent. When he was face up again, he saw a strikingly beautiful girl looking both content and oblivious. "My gohd," he panted, catching his breath, his shirt covered in forest litter and still halfway up his chest, "yew scared thuh heyl outta me!"

Jillian might as well have had an iPod playing for all the attention she was paying. Unfortunately, unlike many kids, she wasn't able to afford such a luxury, so it was the music in her head that she was listening to instead of some trendy new toy. Not so bad, considering it only ran out of batteries when you did.

Looking up at the crash and the voice, Jillian jumped back, startled, and she reached up to put a hand on her chest as if to still her thundering heart. Her hazel eyes wide, she blinked down at the young man for a second before she walked over and reached down a hand, not thinking in the slightest that he might be dangerous or anything. She just wanted to help him up since it seemed she was the cause of his toppling over.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to...I didn't see anyone." She winced a little and then laughed, rubbing her palm over the back of her neck. "I didn't expect anyone to be out here."

Simon laughed- a musical, almost childish laugh. "That's okay," he chuckled, taking the outstretched hand. He came up an inch shorter than her, but it was obvious that he was still young (seventeen, to be precise) and in a matter of months he could shoot up to over six feet tall. He was a skinny one, though, so it seemed any food he consumed would first have to go toward keeping emaciation at bay.

"I swear I'm invisible," he marvled as he brushed dirt off himself. The twangy Alabama accent disappeared almost as swiftly as it had come, yet a subtle hint of southern drawl laced each word. "I've gone to the beach twice now and have had someone trip over me both times. I come out here thinking no one will be around, and someone almost walks into me again!" He smiled a sweet, country boy smile. "I'm thinking I'm not only a Fire Nymph but also a darn genie!"

As though suddenly remembering his manners, Simon held out a hand to Jillian. "Simon Curtis," he said pleasantly. "House of Fire." His blue-green eyes caught in Jillian's, and a light flush crept into his cheeks. Damn, she was pretty. But not just pretty. She was... well, quite attractive. Magnetic. He smiled again, this time from wiggly butterflies in his tummy. Cissy was beautiful, and Sydni was sweet, but no girl he'd seen at Halcyon Halls so far was quite as appealing.

Helping him up caused Jillian to be a little off balance herself and she nearly stumbled back with the effort. He was that kind of gangly that only could mean one thing - he hadn't quite hit that final teenage growth spurt yet. Jillian hadn't experienced that kind of thing herself, but she'd seen it happen to nearly every boy back home. Since she spent a lot of time hanging around boys, she knew it fairly well.

"Nah, I'm just clumsy, to be honest," she chuckled, reaching up to push her hair back behind her ear. The young man looked friendly, with a smile that disarmed her and set her at ease. She couldn't help but smile back as he lamented his situation. "I swear, I'd see someone and trip over them, so don't worry." Tilting her head as he said the words 'fire nymph', she blinked a second. Was he like Ita then? Only...Ita was a water elemental. She hadn't heard of nymphs, other than that in fiction they were all buxom naked girls who ran around forests giggling a lot.

"Oh," she took his hand, lightly shaking it. "Jillian Valance, Zephir House." Smiling back, she caught his flush and then looked down a little. Why did she have to be socially awkward? "Um, I'm human," she offered, shrugging a little just in case he decided he didn't want to talk to her. He didn't seem the type to dismiss her because of her 'inferiority' but one never knew which supernaturals hated humans and which didn't. She hoped he didn't hate her. He seemed nice.

The second the word 'human' popped out of Jillian's mouth, Simon laughed again. This time it sounded something like relieved. "You don't know much about supernaturals," he said, sounding quite sure of this fact. "Thank God. I thought I was, like, the only person here who knew nothing about anything!" Meeting Jillian was becoming the highlight of the month! "I've only been here a few weeks," he explained, "and before that I thought nymphs and vampires and werewolves were all just stories. And being here, I feel like an idiot because I'm still not even sure what a nymph is." He hoped this little monologue wasn't boring her, but he just couldn't stop. "Everyone else seems to have a grip on who they are and what they do, and I feel stupid not knowing anything."

"Actually," he explained, "I'm really only a quarter nymph. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not as to what I can do." A thought suddenly struck him. "Hey, if you're human, then why are you at Halcyon Halls? I thought only supernaturals went here."

Perhaps she was human, but she had some kind of X-Men like power that made her supernatural. Like, maybe she never had to sleep, or if you scared her a million quills would pop out all over her body. No, that was stupid. He'd already scared her and there had been no quills. He would've taken note of that. Still, his wacky little mind was already imagining what Jillian looked like with quills all over her body. It completely ruined her beauty.

Jillian couldn't help but smile again at the relieved laugh. It filled her with a little more hope about the general consensus on humans here at Halycon Halls. At his comment, she gave him a quizzical look. "No, I really don't," she murmured, but then chuckled again. "Oh, good...I thought I was the only one dumped here and not told a damn thing!" She reached down to brush a stray leaf off of her pants and she smirked. "Yeah, me too. I've only been here a week...I have yet to actually meet a wereanything or a vampire. Met a demon, but he was really nice." Unfortunately, it seemed she couldn't ask him what a nymph was because he didn't really know.

His comment about his own insecurity made her give a gentle frown. "No, don't feel that way. I can't control my own power but barely...I can't do hardly anything." For a moment, after he asked her the question, she flushed. "Oh! I uh...I can read people's minds. But don't worry, I'm not doing it to you, I'm too tired...it's the quietest my head has been since I got here." She waited with a half-wince. People usually either told her her power was awesome or acted like she was a leper.

Simon regarded her for a moment, mulling over her power. "That's kind of terrible," he said at last. "I mean, hearing peoples' thoughts? I imagine God put thoughts in our heads so no one else had to hear them. I know people can be cruel with their words, so their minds must be twice as much poison." He rubbed the back of his neck, still trying to put into words what he really meant. "It seems really unfair," he decided. "The mind should be a sanctuary, and yours has been involuntarily invaded."

"On the plus side," he added, "it must be nice having the inside scoop on things sometimes." He shrugged. "I dunno. I don't think I could handle being able to read peoples' minds." He picked a few leaves out of his hair, feeling a bit awkward about the conversation. Had he said the wrong thing? What if she loved her ability and he'd just rudely stomped all over it? Maybe he should change topics. But this was pretty interesting.

"Uh, so, would you be able to read my mind if you wanted to? Or does it not work like that?" It seemed like it would be pretty cool to have someone telling him what he was thinking. Like a magic trick. What an awful thing to say! he scolded himself. Thank God she's not reading your mind right now, she'd think you were a condescending idiot! Or worse, she'd tap in on the thoughts he kept having about her pretty eyes and perfect skin, and well, that's just be motifying. He blushed deeply- this was a train wreck!

Jillian blinked, obvious surprise on her face. For a second, she didn't know what to say or what to think. Her eyes moved downward and then she pursed her lips just a little before giving him a sincere and sober look. "Thank you...I mean, almost everyone else has thought it's a really neat thing and I hate it." Sighing, she curled a piece of hair around her finger and then gave a short and small smile. "I agree...I hate invading people's heads."

Suddenly, she let out a soft laugh. "Yeah, well, I usually rely on it to tell me if people are nearby. I guess I take it for granted though...I didn't notice when it wasn't working right." She thought for a second before shaking her head. "No...I don't think I could right now. I've had a long week...it's kinda exhausted me." She caught his blush, feeling a little bad that he was embarrassed. "So...what do you do? Can you do anything special?" she asked, trying to divert the topic to him instead of talking about her currently malfunctioning power.

It was strange... although people had asked Simon before about his abilities, when Jillian asked him he felt more proud of them. Maybe because she, too, felt so lost in this world that Simon felt entitled to a little bit bragging. "I can manipulate fire," he said, smiling. "I can't create it... at least I don't think I can... not yet anyways. But if you had a small flame I could move it and stuff."

He suddenly thought about Alabama and his mother and all the hell he went through because of his heritage. Something that wasn't his fault he'd been punished for. It seemed to be a common thing with the students here- a lot of them felt trapped, sad, even angry about their abilities because they were stuck with something and ostricized for it and it wasn't their fault.

"Have you ever seen the X-Men movies?" he asked out of the blue. "It kinda feels like that, being at Halcyon. In the last movie they said they'd made a cure for the mutants, a shot that took their power away." His sea blue-green eyes clouded for a moment. "Would you do it?" he asked. "Would you take the cure to make your abilities go away?"

Jillian tilted her head, shoving a stray piece of hair behind her ear, and she couldn't help but smile as he revealed his abilities. Manipulating fire, even in a small amount, was pretty bad ass. She'd remembered talking to someone else who could do it, but even he had needed help in creating it. "Really? That's neat...and I bet you'll get better at it, right?"

Blinking for a moment, she had to honestly think about it. Would she give up her powers? They were the only thing standing between her and assumed normalcy. But then, she'd never been normal and she didn't think she'd ever be normal. They had saved her life once too. So, if she didn't have them, she'd be dead. It didn't seem fair to want to give them up. "No, I wouldn't. There's too much good I can do with them to want to give them up, you know? I'd take a shot to be able to control them," she laughed. "Would you? I mean, yours don't sound nearly as annoying as mine are, but I don't have them, so I don't know."

Simon thought he'd had an answer prepared. After all, you don't ask a question like that and not expect to have to answer it yourself. But somethign Jillian had said made him think twice. "Yours don't sound nearly as annoying as mine..."His initial reaction was no, that they were pretty cool and once he could control them he'd be so badass Chuck Norris would pale in comparison. But then he thought about how having this ability had messed up his entire life. And while the power itself hadn't been annoying, everything surrounding it had been. He'd lost his mom, his home, his friends, everything.

But then again, he'd gained so much as well. New friends, a new home. No longer was there a need to hide his weirdness. And at the moment, if nothing else, he was standing in the woods with a beautiful girl talking about X-Men movies. And when you're seventeen, life didn't get much better than that. Well, they could have been making out, but he'd just met her so that might've been awkward.

"I would give up my abilities," he decided, "but maybe not what they've gotten me. Without them, I wouldn't be here at Halcyon Halls. And I wouldn't be starting a new life out from under my mother's thumb. And I wouldn't be in the woods," he added, blushing and staring at his feet, "walking on my hands and crashing into lovely girls. I think that might make almost burning my house down a few times worth it." Oh, God, it sounded so corny! But it was also sincere, which made it even more corny. Simon held a passing thought where Jillian turned into a scarecrow from listening to him, a cornfield popping up all around them. Now that would be a power he'd give up in a heartbeat.

Jillian herself hadn't really lost anything because of her powers except for a small measure of innocence. Being attacked, and then hearing the thoughts and seeing what that man had planned for her was something that had shaken her to her core. She still had nightmares about it, about the things she'd seen that he'd done. The things he'd wanted so badly to do to her. It wasn't something she wanted to experience again by far, but if she hadn't have known, she wouldn't have been able to save herself.

It was good that Jillian wasn't able to overhear Simon's thoughts, or else she might have had some blushing going on. Not because he was thinking about making out with her, but because she didn't have any right to be embarrassed about that sort of thing anymore. Certainly not after her escapades with Xander on the beach. No, she was coming to grips with the whole fun 'making out' thing herself, so in that aspect she was a perfectly normal teenage girl.

Jillian gave Simon a wide smile, ducking her gaze just a little before she looked back up. That was sweet, what he'd said, and she knew he meant it. However, he had just admitted to accidentally burning down his house, so she felt a bit bad for him. "Well, thanks?" she grinned. "Though, I don't think burning down a house is necessary," she teased gently. "So, why were you out in the woods, walking on your hands? I'd have picked the field...less twigs."

It was a relief how well Jillian took to the stammering. Some people found befuddled young boys quite pleasing. People like Cissy. But some people find them quite annoying and feel they should be the brunt of cruel jokes for the rest of eternity. Simon was quite glad Jillian didn't fall into that category.

"I had thought about the field," he admitted, "but then people could see me. I've decided to learn something new every day, and today I chose walking on my hands. I got pretty good at it, but for the first half hour or so all I did was fall over. I didn't want people staring at me, or wondering what the hell I was doing. So, I came out here because I figured it'd be less crowded. And I was right- you're the first person I've seen come by here."

Simon looked at his hands, the imprints of various roots and sticks still imprinted in them. "Problem is," he continued, wiping his hands on his denim shorts, "the sticks will stick you, you know?" He showed her his palms. "That and my shirt keeps coming untucked, so then I can't see anything." He smoothed his old shirt down, hoping it wasn't so threadbare that Jillian could see through it. He'd worn it here because he knew he'd be doing a lot of falling down, but he hadn't expected to run into anyone. He didn't think she'd appreciate standing there talking to him while all the while his nipples were showing through the thin fabric. He crossed his arms just in case.

"So, ah, what brings you out here? Not acrobatics, I see. Going someplace in particular?"

Given that Jillian had hung out with mostly guys back home, she was used to stammering befuddled young boys. Not all of her guy friends had been jocks, after all. It'd never quite sat right when her friends teased other guys and she'd called them on it. They had no reason to be jackasses, after all, and plenty of times they would just calm down. So Jillian didn't like teasing and wouldn't do it. She herself was just as bumbling, but in feet instead of words.

"Oh, there aren't that many people out in the field..." If she concentrated hard enough, she might have been able to tell just how many people there were out in the field, but she didn't really feel like getting a nosebleed or whatever it was she'd get if she strained herself. She didn't really know, she'd never tried. She shrugged and she made a face before laughing softly. "I don't think anyone would stare. I mean, think about where we are, right?"

She looked at his hands and winced, smiling softly. "Yeeeah, the sticks are the worst part. Not being able to see when you're walking on your hands is more than a little dangerous! You could walk into a tree!" She noticed him cross his arms and wondered if he was uncomfortable. That kind of body language usually said go-away, so she didn't know what to think.

"Nah, I'm just out for a walk. I like to hike," she murmured, curling a long strand of hair back behind her ear.

No, there probably weren't that many people out in the field, at least not at this time of day. And Jillian was right, no one would really stare at his antics. Honestly, this entire school was a giant weirdo fest of insanity. And that was neglecting the fact that it was full of supernaturals.

"Well," Simon said, "I could either walk into trees or I could walk into people. Lucky for me I hit the softer of the two." He rubbed the bark of a gnarled oak standing beside him. "You need to shave, buddy," he told it. "Either that or get some lotion. Jillian was nice and smooth, didn't scratch me up a wink. You, however, feel like a full-body five o'clock shadow." He gave the tree another pat, then turned attention back to Jillian. What, talking to a tree was perfectly normal, wasn't it?

"Going hiking, huh?" he asked, studying her a bit closer than before. "Do you usually go hiking without paying much attention? No offense, but you could fall off a mountain that way. Not that there are any around here," he added, "Just saying."

Jillian smiled, the wide grin on her face lighting it. She laughed softly before leaning against a tree of her own, laying her hand flat against the bar. "Hey, I prefer the trees sometimes. They're a bit quieter, thought wise." She smirked. Clearly she was on the same page, though she was thinking about listening to a tree's inner monologue. Really, who was weirder here?

"I think the tree's just fine the way he is," she teased. She rubbed the bark for a second before turning her own attention back to Simon. "Can't climb a smooth tree, after all. At least not very well!" She smirked and then turned so she was leaning with her back against it, her face tilted towards Simon.

"Yeah...unfortunately, I'm ridiculously clumsy. So when I pay attention, I still trip over things. It's something I wish would go away, but...my body thinks otherwise." She sighed, before she smirked again. "Hey, the higher I am, the more graceful I am." It was true. If she climbed a tree, she was practically a spidermonkey. Walking on the flattest ground, she was a disaster.

"That's probably true," Simon credited her. "Climbing a smooth tree would be pretty fruitless. It'd be like climbing a flag pole. Which," he informed her, "my grandmother used to do all the time. Or so says my mom."

Simon looked her over carefully. "You don't look like you'd be clumsy," he said honestly. "You look like you'd be exceptionally graceful, actually. Maybe a ballerina in your childhood. But then again, you can't judge a book by its cover."

He raised his eyebrows in regard to her last comment. "You're graceful when you're high?" he asked, utterly perplexed. "You mean, like, stoned or something?" She didn't look the type to be a dug user, but again, you can't judge based on appearances.

Jillian laughed. "Yeah...wait, your grandmother climbs flag poles?" she asked, smiling and narrowing her eyes a little as she tilted her head, pushing more hair back behind her ear. That was a strange thing to say, but an even stranger thing to hear about. "Or rather, she used to climb flag poles."

Pausing for a moment, she gave a startled laugh at his comment. "Ballerina? Oh no, no no. I'd break something...and yeah, you really really can't." she smiled.

Perplexed right back for a moment, Jillian paused and then laughed. "No! High up in a tree...not stoned." She shook her head and made a face. "Nah, I don't do drugs...no good reason to."

My grandmother used to climb flagpoles," he explained. "When she was a kid. She's dead now. Died before I ever met her. But she'd tell my mom stories about when she'd climb flagpoles because her brother dared her to." Smiling, he shook his head. "My grandma was a nut."

When Jillian explained that no, she was not a drug user, a look of obvious relief crossed Simon's face. "Oh, okay," he said thankfully. "Not that I'd get all preachy if you were, but... well, I think they're kind of stupid. There are plenty of other ways to kill your brain cells if you're really dedicated to the cause." He thought for a moment. "Like listening to Rush Limbaugh."

"Well," he smiled shyly, "I'm gonna head back to the school. I think I've rushed enough blood to my head for one day. And I'm getting hungry. It's been, like... fifteen minutes since I last ate, so I'm pretty famished." The truth was, his stomach was in too many knots to eat anything, but there was no way he was telling Jillian that. "It was great meeting you, though. Nice to find someone closer to my age?" He started walking back toward Halcyon Halls, carefully stepping over roots and stones so he wouldn't take a dive into the dirt and look like a complete fool. "I'll be seeing you around?" he turned and called hopefully.

"Ooh, okay," she nodded and then frowned slightly. Yeah, she'd put her foot into it. "I'm sorry to hear that. She sounds fun," she murmured before looking down and digging her toe into the dirt. "I wish my grandma was fun," she said, a wry smirk on her face. Her grandmother was anything but.

"No, I don't like drugs. I've had beer before, but alcohol's not really a drug, right?" she laughed lightly and then made a face at the mention of Rush Limbaugh. "Ugh! Yeah, he's right up there."

Jillian tilted her head, smiling and then giggling a little. Teenaged boys, right? "Riiight, so if I ever need to find you, you'll be in the kitchen?" she asked. He was a sweetheart and pretty cute. "Nice to meet you too, Simon. Yeah, there are some of us young'uns here." She thought about it for a minute as he walked away and then she called back. "Sure! See you in class!" She had class with him, she remembered. Supernatural history? She thought that was it.

Turning around herself, she meandered farther into the woods and continued her hike.
