Hide and Seek by Arabian Princess
Dorothy rubbed her eyebrows in irritation. Her mother had had them plucked to make her prettier for her first trip to Romefeller, but the eight year old did not think it mattered much. She was outside anyway. All the adults did inside was talk, and that was very boring. It was a nice sunny day, meaning one should be outside. Unfortunately, it seemed that no one else was out— "HI!" Dorothy nearly jumped out her skin as a high-pitched voice sounded. Once her heart returned to her rib cage, she realized there was another blonde girl with her. "Hi...." "I'm Relena Darlian! I'm seven! Who are you?" "My mother told me not to talk to strangers." Dorothy turned her back to the girl who just hopped until she was face-to-face with Dorothy again. "But I'm a kid!" "You're still a stranger." "Tell me your name? Please?" She looked at the Relena girl for a moment. "Nob'dy." "Nob'dy?" Relena frowned, thinking about it. "You have a weird name Nob'dy." Dorothy shrugged. "Is your father here, too? Mine is." "Yes. My mother came, too. This is my first time here. Usually they leave me home." "My father lets me come with him on trips sometimes. My mother doesn't like it. This is my first time here, too. I've never met another kid on Father's trips, though." "What do you do then?" "I go for rides." "Where do you go?" "I just look at places." "You're boring." Wanting to waste no more of her time, Dorothy swiftly turned on her heel and started to walk away. The girl followed her immediately. "Nob'dy! Nob'dy! Wait up!" Dorothy stopped in her tracks and looked over her shoulder. "Yes?" "Will you play with me?" "Play what?" "I don't know...hide and seek?" A devilish smile crossed Dorothy's face. "Sure! You count to a hundred, and I'll hide!" "A hundred?" Relena whined. "Fine. Count to ten, ten times." "Okay!" Being a year older had its advantages. When Relena started to count, Dorothy took off and hid behind a statue in one of the open halls that lead outside. It took awhile for Relena to finish counting, and Dorothy was able to count all the cracks in the statue and wall before she heard footsteps. "Are you here, Nob'dy? No. Nob'dy! Nob'dy?" Relena looked high and low for her new friend, but she was unable to find the other girl. Before she could finish searching the hall, a man came up. Relena seemed to know him and was unalarmed by his presence and questions. "What are you doing?" "I'm playing with my new friend, Nob'dy. We're playing hide and seek." "Nob'dy? Come on, Relena. You can play with your imaginary friends later. Your father wants to see you." "But!" "No buts. Come along." "She's real!" "Yes, I'm sure she is." The man took her hand and dragged her back to her father. Dorothy giggled, slipping out of her hiding place. Too bad I can't play with her again.
