Need has a face...
I have a hero complex. You probably already know this.
Recently I found out that a friend in fandom is going through a particularly hard time: her husband is having some really difficult health problems, leaving her to take care of two teenage kids and the entire household on just one income. Their medical bills are mounting – the doctors still haven’t given them any clear information. On top of this, insurance is not helping them out as much as it needs to (no surprise there, really), and her quest for any other assistance is running into a bureaucratic wall.
I was very moved by the way livelongnmarry (LJ) pulled the fandoms together to raise funds for gay rights this past summer, and I got to thinking – why can’t smaller groups of fans pull together to help one of their own in trouble?
I’m setting up a fundraiser to help her family through this crisis. Hopefully this idea will catch on, and fans will reach out to help each other a bit more. But right now, the focus is on one woman, her husband, their kids, and their home. She’s been a reader and friend of mine for as long as I’ve been journaling, and while I’m in no position to help financially anymore, the least I can do is sell my craft.
So, in the spirit of fandom generosity, I bring you the goods.
Fanfic, $1 per 100 words. That’s right, a dollar a drabble, and anything up from there! Fics 500 words and under will be sent to the winners within two weeks of receipt of donation; any longer fics will need a little extra time to cook – I’ll give you a time estimate when the donation is in, not to exceed 2 months. (This is, of course, presuming no one donates a ridiculous amount of money to get me to finish “Coming Home”…)
And yes, that includes chapters of existing stories: if you want a new chapter of “Coming Home” or any of the others, they tend to run 1000-2500 words, so I’ll price a new chapter at the bargain rate of $10.
Now, the fundraising site requires a minimum donation of $10, but if you'd like to go for a smaller fic, by all means you can send concealed cash to my P.O. Box (listed below) or drop a donation into my PayPal account (schwarzfiles@aol.com) and I'll transfer it over for you and cover any PayPal fees so your donation goes in intact.
For stand-alone stories, please format your request as follows:
Fandom, character or pairing: situation – a quote or other bit of inspiration
Example:
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Sephiroth/Angeal/Genesis: 1st class in drag – It’s good for the charity.
I’ll write yaoi, yuri, het, gen, tako, squick, whatever your fannish heart desires – though I think I’m best at yaoi, darkfic, and crack.
Fandoms:
Final Fantasy VII (including Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, and Crisis Core)
Weiß Kreuz (anything but the drama cds)
Saiyuki (including Gaiden)
Gundam Wing
Harry Potter
and, if the price is right, I’ll try writing some Middleman crack just for you. ~_^
Check out my existing fics for examples of my writing.
I’m a professional copy editor and proof reader. If you need a beta and/or native English grammar correction, I’ll make that available at the same rates as my fiction: $1 per 100 words.
Same fandoms as Offer A, but check with me if you just need a native English read-over – if it’s not fandom specific, I can do that too.
This includes spelling and grammar, and correcting for style – if there are any major problems, I’ll give you a brief write-up with suggestions for fixing them. For any more intensive issues, check out Offer C.
I have experience in editing and critique of 30K-word novellas. I would be happy to help you with any length of story, fanfic or original. Due to the size of this task, I’m limiting this offer to the first three donations. I’m asking for a donation of $50 minimum for 30K words, more on larger stories. Anyone choosing this option will be asked to comment here to reserve their pick, then email me directly with the particulars at wersofthegrieve@aol.com.
We’re setting up a fundraiser through Fundable – their FAQ is here.
The way it works is we set a goal and a time frame, you good people go and pledge a donation, and if and when we actually reach that goal, you make good on your pledges and I make good on the ficcage. If we fail to reach our goal, nothing happens: you pay nothing, I write nothing. The key is, we all have to pull together to reach that goal.
I’m setting it at $300 in 25 days. The reason I’ve set it so low is that, again, if we don’t reach our goal, all the pledges go bye-bye, and I’d rather send her a small gift than nothing at all. I’m hoping we can raise a lot more than that, but at this point, even that amount will help.
For those who wish to donate but do not have PayPal or a credit card:
Send check or concealed cash to me at GuiltyRed / P.O. Box 264 / Davison, MI 48423. I’ll make a photocopy of the envelope and the donation for our records, then put that money into the Fundable pot from here. Remember, every dollar can help – mac n’ cheese and ramen aren’t sexy, but they’re food.
And just to clarify: I will not be making any money off of this drive. All proceeds will go to a fellow fan who really needs a little help right now. (Fundable will take 10% of the final amount, but that’s pretty standard.) USD only, please.
So…are you in?
