Gryffindor Common Room [OPEN]
Homework. That was the task Sirius had sat down to accomplish this fine evening. But like most days, Sirius was doing everything but his homework. Sprawled sideways in a chair of the Gryffindor common room, legs dangling off one end, head the other, the black haired boy was reading a magazine. Much more interesting than the charms textbook in his lap.

Turning a glossy page he wondered vaguely about the new kids...something still seemed curious about them. He'd have to do more investigating in the coming weeks.

"You look engrossed Black," Kingsley chuckled as he made his way into the common room.

He couldn't see how this one did so little work and in OWL year too!

"Nothing like an article on the latest motorbikes to get you going." Sirius said as he put down his magazine to give Kingsley a grin.

"How is it that you don't have any homework second term of your owl year," he asked curiously.

His own bag dropped to the ground with a thump and he sat on the floor by Sirius' chair preferring to use the space to spread out.

"Never said I didn't have homework, mate." Sirius winked and brought up his magazine to flip a page.

"Just not doing it at the moment."

Kingsley rolled his eyes. Then seeing the page that was open, he whistled at the machine. What are the specs for that one?"

His father had been a mechanic after all he knew beauty when he saw it.

"I don't know but it's bloody fantastic looking." Sirius said, staring at the picture. If only it wasn't a muggle magazine and the pictures had the ability to move...

"One day, I'll own one of these beauties." He said as he tapped the page with a finger.

Kingsley closed his eyes at the memory and then said cheekily, "They're much better if you build them from the ground up and customize them."

"Yeah?" Sirius asked, interested. "Sounds brilliant, except for the fact I know next to nothing about mechanical doings." He pointed out with a sad sigh.

"Tell you what, when you get one I'll show you what I remember. Add some magic and that will be one heck of a bike."

He dug out his Transfiguation book and flipped to the correct chapter to read.

"Thanks, mate!" Sirius was almost beaming now, thinking about what he could do to a bike once he got one.

"I want it to fly." He thought aloud as he stared at the picture in front of him. When he was forced to be at home, he would often spend hours dreaming of what he would do with a motorbike when he got one. And he was good enough at charms to manage it too.

It was with a tinge of bitterness that Remus walked into the common room that day to find one of his best mates neglecting his homework. Again. He supposed he wouldn't have been so bitter, had it not been for the fact that Sirius seemed to do just fine (more than fine, really) without ever having to lift a finger about it at all. Whereas he and the rest of the school buried their noses in textbooks and study guides.

"Honestly Pads," he murmured a little exasperatedly as he moved past him to dump his the texts he just checked out on the coffee table.

"Ah, Moony. Good evening to you too." Sirius looked up at his friend with a grin.

"Leave any books in the library for the rest of the school?" He teased as Remus' books landed with a thud on the table.

Peter looked up hopefully from his Transfiguration when he heard the familiar sound of books hitting a table. Remus must be back, which was good. He knew better than to ask Sirius for help with his homework. Sirius was brilliant and all, but he was also prone to biting Peter's head off -- especially this close to the holidays, with memories of spending time with his family still fresh in his mind.

"Remus?" Peter squeaked, momentarily removing his fingers from his mouth (where he'd been chewing the nail down to the quick). "Would you help me with this diagram on Switching Spells? I have something in the wrong place, but I can't tell what."

The look on his face might have been a scowl if Remus Lupin could actually give a scowl to Sirius Black. He rolled his eyes though, too, just for good measure, and moved to sit in front of the books on the table, his legs tucked in beneath him.

"Apparently I'm the only one who has any exams to study for around here," he replied over his shoulder.

I'm sorry if we all can't be as brilliant as you, was the biting remark Remus just barely managed to hold back.

"Best to be prepared you know," he replied with a casual tone. He reached over for his first book then.. on time travel..

"If you say so." He answered under his breath as he flipped a magazine page. But before he'd begun reading Sirius happened to notice the book Remus had gone for.

"Time travel?" Sirius sat up a bit to lean over and look at the book. "Thought you said you were studying for exams, Moony." Sirius joked accusingly.

Hugging the book to his chest, Remus sniffed defensively. "Taking a break," he murmured with what he hoped was an offhanded shrug. He nearly blanched as soon as the words left his lips, however. Even he wasn't bad enough to take a break from books.. with another book.

"Wow, Moony..." Sirius said with a slow, sad shake of his head. "There are better ways of taking breaks from homework you know. Other than textbooks."

Sirius was still intrigued though. "Why time travel?" He asked. He didn't remember Remus having a fondness for time travel before. Except that one muggle book he talked about once. The Time Mechanic or something. Whatever it was called.

Peter looked from Remus to Sirius and back again, trying not to pout. What was he, invisible? He felt as if he'd had a Silencing Charm cast on him, too. Remus was just sitting there, reading some book on Time Travel for fun, and completely ignored his request for help. Well, that's fine, he thought, packing his things away in a huff. He didn't need Remus. He'd go and find James, who was loads better at Transfiguration anyway and didn't seem to mind being asked for help.

Oddly enough it was Peter's tiny huff of annoyance that finally got Remus' attention, rather than his previously blatant request moments earlier.

Blinking, Remus turned to the other Marauder in faint surprise, and actual dread. He'd.. actually forgotten Peter was there. Guilt immediately welled up inside him, and he pursed his lips in an apologetic frown towards the other boy (after sending a glare towards Sirius, whom he readily blamed for distracting him so effectively, the lovable prat).

"I'm sorry, Peter, something about Switching Spells?"

Part of him wanted to storm out of the common room and slam the Fat Lady's portrait behind him -- although, her being a portrait and all, that wouldn't be too dramatic -- but instead he sighed, sinking back into his chair. "I -- er -- there's something wrong on my diagram." He began to rummage in his bag until he found the roll of parchment. "I've something out of place, but I can't tell what." Spreading the parchment out on the table again, Peter automatically raised a hand to his mouth to chew on a fingernail whilst he waited for Remus' opinion.

Remus made sure to give the other a kind smile before scooting closer so he could get a better look at the diagram. He hummed thoughtfully, nodding slightly before tapping a part of the diagram with his finger. "That should be down here instead," he replied gently. "Easy enough mistake to make-- the symbols are too similar for my liking too."

Blast it all, he was always mixing up those two symbols. Stupid Transfiguration! He hated that class. His expression cleared a second later, however, when he remembered he was still being watched, and he was afraid Remus would think he was angry. "Thanks awfully, Remus," he said with an apologetic smile. "You'd think I could tell them apart after four years."

"It's an easy enough mistake to make, don't worry about it," Remus returned, gently clapping a hand over the other boy's shoulder.

"Did you need help with anything else?" He made a vague gesture to the books. "I'm on break now, so I've got time."

Remus held his stare for as long as he could. Slowly a flush crept up from his neck all the way to his cheeks, and soon he was forced to finally glance away, lest he just blurt out all his secrets.

"Binns mentioned the Time Turner in class few months ago," he tried to shrug as offhandedly as he could. "Thought it was worth looking into.."

Satisfied that he'd at least won the staring contest, Sirius was keen enough to realize he wouldn't find out the answers he wanted tonight.

"Uh huh. You would pay attention to whatever it is Binns is saying..." Sirius shook his head sadly at Remus before turning back to his magazine.

"Black just likes to let you play martyr Lupin," Kingsley said without heat from his place on the floor. He shut his text and made a few notes on his scroll before rolling it up and placing it back in his bag as completed work.

"I would consider threatening his Quidditch position but I hate training new players partway through the season."

Remus glanced towards Kingsley and fashioned the older boy a wan smile. Having no real head for Quidditch, he simply gave a helpless sort of shrug. "I doubt even that would get him to shape up," he admitted with an over-exaggerated sigh, obviously meant for Sirius.

"It's true, probably wouldn't." Sirius nodded at Remus to agree with him. While he liked playing quidditch, he really wouldn't miss it enough to become a work-a-holic.

The thought of such a thing made him shudder. Spending all his time in the library, nose in a book...no, definitely wouldn't cut it.
