The boys' dorms [Open to Harry and James]
It was hard to spend a lot of time in the dorm. First it had been because of the other people occupying the room, people that Harry knew and loved, and lost. It was hard watching his father go about every day teenage things without a care in the world, not knowing that he wouldn't survive another decade. It was hard watching Sirius joke and laugh and act like a teenager, act like a person who knew nothing about the horrors of Azkaban. But now, now it was hard because of Lupin. Remus knew everything. He knew who Harry was, where he had come from, what was going on in the future. Hermione had ruined everything and so Harry needed to take some time to himself.

The dormitory was deserted when he made his way up the stairs to drop off his books. The lack of people tempted him into staying for a bit where he could just think. There was far too much to think about and not enough time. Actually, he corrected himself, he had all the time in the world. An extra twenty or so years at least.

The door slammed open just a moment after Harry closed it, and James wandered into the dormitory. He did not even notice Harry at first, but instead trotted over to his bed, threw his books down, and sat down beside them.

He sighed heavily, and then realized Harry was present.

James fell off his bed, but stood up quickly. "Harry!" He said with a smirk. "Are you the only one here?"

If nothing else could be said about his father, Harry believed James to be amusing at the very least. At least he had the grace to fall off of the bed into a large lump. "Yeah, why?"

"Perfect." He said, muttering something and pointing his wand at the door. "Privacy charm." He clarified.

Then James sat casually on his bed. How to bring up the whole secret future thing? The fact that he knew that Harry was his...that he had talked to Draco...

"Lily's been talking to me lately." James began. "She's fighting with Snape, and apparently she trusts me enough to talk to me. Plus I know all the good conspiracy theories."

It couldn't possibly... He couldn't possibly... It was best to just play dumb, Harry decided. "I'm sorry, I don't think I quite follow."

"Yes you do." James said, rolling his eyes. "You're just making it difficult for me. Do you know how hard it is to just come out and say? It was a bit of a shock when I figured it out!"

He stared at the face very close to his own, and finally gave up. "Fine! You win. But only because you're glaring at me like Lily does when I've done something she disapproves of." He smirked fondly. "Which is pretty much always."

He couldn't say it because if he said it and it wasn't what James thought he knew then Harry would have ruined everything himself. He couldn't say it because it was so weird to be standing face to face with a teenage version of his father. "Figured what out?"

He glared at his future, unborn son. He was making this difficult.

"About the future and all its little twists." James said, ruffling his hair. "And about how you're my..." He glared at a wall. He still couldn't say it. "I...I figured it out."

Remus had told him everything. That or Remus told Lily as she was who James mentioned had supplied all the information. "The future?" he laughed it off.

"In case you're wondering, I figured this out on my own, being a genius." He said, annoyed that Harry wouldn't admit the truth. He had promised not to mention Draco.

"Genes I expect you inherited. No, you probably got the intelligence from Lily." James shook his head. "Am I just good for looks? You got your mother's eyes though--congrats on that one. Look, you don't have to admit the truth, but I know it's true, and you know it's true, so you might as well just come out with it."

There would be no point in denying it, he supposed. The damage had already been done, his life was already in shambles. "Apparently I got my disrespect for the rules from you too."

He wasn't sure whether he should laugh or cry. There it was...his confirmation.

"You disrespect the rules? I've been pretty good about it since the New Year...I haven't water-bombed Snape even once." James said with a silly smile. Draco had mentioned that he knew Snape, although that didn't necessarily mean that Harry did. Still, he wanted to see the boy's reaction to that.

"I didn't get much out of your friends...although Ron mentioned Quidditch and a girlfriend." Finally, he could get the information he wanted so badly.

It was like a weight was being lifted off of his shoulders completely. It was a relief to be completely honest. "I've had more detentions than I'd like to recall. I actually had to sort through the list of your own detentions before." It was weird to recall it, "You had quite a lot actually."

Just because the truth was out didn't mean that Harry felt any better about it, especially considering how much trouble he was causing by saying anything at all. It was James's mention of Ginny, however, that brought everything to a screeching halt. "Yeah, that pretty much sums up everything."

James smirked, putting his hands into his pockets. He hadn't heard Harry's last comment. "Yeah, well, we--Sirius and me--have done some pretty good ones. Mum, er, your grandmother, that is..." He paused as he thought about how strange it was--his mother had always wanted a grandson and now...she had one.

"She was also a bit of a prankster." James continued. "She really loves pies...she sends me them all the time. If you want to try one, I have a dozen flavors under my bed."

The mention of yet another family member Harry had never gotten to meet tugged at the corners of his lips. Even if he had created a world where he no longer existed, the fact that he was able to spend this time with his dad was enough. "That would be good," he said, nodding slightly.

He sighed a bit, "Is this really weird for you? I mean, it's weird for me..." There was too much explanation behind all of that though, which reminded Harry not to say too much. "How much do you know, exactly?"

"It's incredibly weird for me." He said with a chuckle, bending down to look under his bed for the pie tins. He picked them up and placed them on his bed.

"All right, we have apple, strawberry, chocolate...artichoke, too." James opened the last tin. "This one's banana and kiwi."

Then he cleared his throat and turned back to Harry. "I know about Lily, obviously, and that there is no village. I know that Remus knows, too, but nothing else. And before you go hunting Moony, he wouldn't tell me a thing."

It was impossible to keep himself from smiling at all. "Artichoke? That's a different one..." It was reaching a point where he wondered why he hadn't just told them to begin with, there didn't seem to be much repercussions, at least yet. "Banana and kiwi sounds good."

He considered everything that he had been told, "I see," he mused.

He handed him the tin. "Yes, well, Mum likes to experiment." His mother's pie really did have healing properties, he decided, considering how depressed Harry had been just a minute ago.

"It's not as bad as the acorn pie." James said, smiling. "I know I can't ask you about the future, but are you at least aware of Moony's furry little problem and our solution?"

Taking the tin that was being offered to him, Harry took a minute to process everything, fictionalized memories that he had often thought of. "Yeah, I know about that." He said.

He sighed. So at least he could speak freely about his life to Harry, although he knew that the boy couldn't say much in return. Of course, Harry had probably heard his stories a thousand times by now, but all the same...

Which reminded him! Time to see if he kept his promises...

"Is Sirius your godfather?" James asked casually. "See, I promised him..."

It was strangely hard hearing James pose the question. This was one answer, he decided, that wouldn't cause horrible things to happen. Sirius was James's best mate, he was going to end up being Harry's godfather regardless. As long as Harry was born. "Yeah, he's my godfather."

He smirked, a bit relieved. That meant that he was still friends with Sirius in the future--which was expected. Plus, it meant that Sirius wasn't feuding with Lily anymore.

"That's great." James finally said, still smiling. "I can't even remember a time when we weren't best friends."

He didn't realize how much that actually meant to his dad but he glad to see it. He just didn't know what to say any longer. "Your mum makes really good pie," he stated, finding it hard to think of her as his grandmum.

"Yeah...she does. She has this giant calendar--she sends pies to people she knows on their birthdays." It hadn't occurred to James until now, but his mother was probably not around while Harry was growing up. It make his throat dry just thinking about it, but his parents were old...

"I guess you'd like to meet her one day, wouldn't you?" He asked quietly, reminding himself that things could still change.

He had been so used to not feeling bad about things like this, loss of parents, loss of people he cared about that he forgot that it still effected others. "I really shouldn't," he said slowly.

"I understand." James said, messing up his already messy hair. "But if you change your mind, let me know. My mum is fun."

Then he laughed. "She used to play pranks, too! Dad was just telling us about it the other day..." James grinned. "I guess your mother still disapproves of pranks?"

He was cornered. There was absolutely nothing that he could say to answer that question and he feared that changing the subject would just be all that more awkward. "How long have you known the truth, exactly?" he questioned, figuring that there was still enough substance in his questioning to keep him occupied enough not to notice the switch.

James decided that probably meant yes, and moved on to Harry's question. "Hm...I don't know. About a week? I mean, I knew during Quidditch practice, if that's what you're asking."

James wasn't sure how to answer that, so he just sighed again. "Yeah." He finally said, just so there wouldn't be a silence.

"So...is there anything that you want to ask me?" He changed the subject, as Harry couldn't say much more.

There were dozens of things that Harry wanted to ask but he needed to be careful, he needed to keep himself from giving away more than was absolutely necessary. It wouldn't do to have him spout off everything that he had ever wanted to say. "Um... What are some of your favorites?" It was weird, he supposed but it was the best he could do.

All right, so much for the conversation. Harry looked out of it again. James ruffled his hair and kept smiling.

That didn't give away as much as he had hoped. "What classes do you like? I can't really stand mine--although I like McGonagall and Transfiguration."

School was a topic the two could meet on.

"Are your professors good? Nice?" James asked, slightly concerned--Harry was his kid, after all.

"Defense Against the Dark Arts is my favorite but I couldn't say much about my professor there, they've changed often." He rubbed at the back of his hand subconciously. "A couple of my professors haven't exactly been the nicest people, and a few of them have been nutters, but all in all they're not bad. McGonagall is good though, I like her alright."

Defense Against the Dark Arts had never been of much use to James (his mother had insisted on teaching him defensive spells on her own), but he could see its appeal. Apparently Harry didn't take after either of his parents in that regard...

"McGonagall's still there?" He smirked. She was his favorite teacher--although he rarely admitted it. "What about that git Slughorn?"

"Yeah, she's amusing, to say the least. Sometimes I can't decide if she likes me or if she can't wait for me to ... er, leave or something." He shrugged it off. "Slughorn is a recent addition to the staff. He's a character and has a gross liking for me."

"McGonagall loves all Gryffindors." James assured him. "She always gives us easy punishments."

He wrinkled his nose a bit at the thought of Slughorn. "So you're part of the elusive Slug Club, then? I think Lily's been in it for years. I was rejected because I blew up the entire lab second year." James smiled at the memory. "Detention for a month and a half. Worth it."

"That's true. My first year she caught me flying illegally on the grounds and instead of detention I got a place on the Quidditch team." Not to mention she also gave him his first broomstick.

Harry shook his head, "I wouldn't say I'm a part of it. I was invited to party after party and it wasn't until Hermione guilt tripped me into going that I went. It was pretty awful." Not to mention that Slughorn's love of collecting celebrities irked him.

"So I've heard. Apparently, he collects good students like butterflies. Luckily Moony has avoided being dragged into his club." James smirked.

"Moony's good at everything, of course. Slughorn probably just dislikes him for associating with Sirius and me. We've been called 'blood traitors'."
