In the common room (open)
There was no gloomier sight of a 16 year old on her birthday than Lily Evans, currently seated in the Gryffindor common room, staring at the fire thoughtfully, surrounded by stuffed animals and pie. At her feet was the package from her family (her mum had signed it from Petunia... did Petunia even remember? No time to think about that now) and Severus's package. Yes, there was no doubt as to who sent the "anonymous" package. She had prepared herself for him ignoring the date entirely, but this was a bit too much for her right now.

She was eying the pie now... She hated to accept gifts from James but it was technically from his mother, really, and it was chocolate. It looked amazing. She deserved chocolate. She disgruntedly picked up the pie, mumbled an "accio fork" and hoped the house elves weren't too frightened. Or that she didn't stab someone. Except maybe James. That might be okay. The fork came, and she started to eat the pie. It was really good. She didn't look any happier, though.

I won't join you (unless you'd like me to) because I know Lily has had plenty of both my characters, but I just wanted to let you know that this made me laugh. :P

Kingsley made his way down to the common room with a book. He was actually on top of his homework for once and so he was indulging in pleasure reading. This book was slim a play entitled A Man for All Seasons. Unlike most of his books it was not very worn. His mother had picked it up for him over the holidays when she went out to the shops with a friend.

He stopped when he saw Lily Evans. "Hello Lily, do you mind the company?" He mentioned to the couch where he was planning on stationing himself for a while.

Lily looked with disbelief at Kingsley. Did he seriously not notice that she was sitting eating an entire pie surrounded by stuffed animals? Well, he was probably just being nice about it, which was good of him. She looked around her at the gifts with a mouthful of pie and managed to warble out a, "Sure, Kingsley."

Peter looked up from his homework. He knew that sound -- the sound of talking with your mouthful. Was that Evans over there, stuffing her face with a whole bloody pie? He also smelt chocolate. Girls liked chocolate when they were sad, didn't they? What did she have to be sad about, with all those gifts and a pie all to herself? On the other hand, she did look pretty miserable, which -- rather than eliciting a pang of sympathy -- gave him an inexplicable feeling of satisfaction. He was pretty sure James had sent her all those toys, but he wasn't surprised she didn't appreciate them. Once a total cow, always a total cow. Snorting softly, Peter turned back to his essay with a smug grin.

He wasn't stupid, he looked at her and smiled kindly not quite sure what to say.

Finally he put the book to the side and asked, "Rough day?"

If anything maybe it would get a laugh for being an understatement.

"Hah," Lily said. "Yes. It's my birthday. And somehow, the world has decided that Lily Evans' 16th birthday is the day when everything is supposed to go wrong." She cast a sad eye towards Severus's package on the floor. Even if she couldn't tell Kingsley about the students from the future, there was still plenty wrong right now.

She cast a look at Peter, who seemed to be gaining some enjoyment from her misery. She could tell that Peter never really had liked her, but she did not need to deal with that right now. She sunk further into the chair she was in.

Kingsley glared at peter the same way he did when anyone else was being rude and annoying.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know it was your birthday."

He thought for a moment.

"What did you used to do fir your birthday, before Hogwarts?"

Peter fairly withered under Kingsley's glare and ducked his head, sliding down even further in his seat. He raised a hand automatically to his mouth to begin chewing on a fingernail as he fumed over his essay. Fine, he thought, scowling. Take her side. Everybody always does -- even James. Perfect, wonderful, everybody-loves-her Lily bloody Evans. Merlin, he hated that cow. More and more every day, it seemed.

Lily saw the exchange between Kingsley and Peter and was glad someone found it fit to defend her. Right this second it felt like the whole world was against her.

"Before Hogwarts... Oh, I don't know. Mostly quiet days with my family, running around with Petunia and maybe seeing Severus." Everyone who hates me now, she thought to herself. "And I didn't expect everyone to know my birthday, no need to apologize."

He understood that. "Home always does seem quieter than Hogwarts. Maybe it's because there is no magic," he mused.

"Well I can keep you company anyway, No need for you to be alone on your Birthday. You can even pick the topic of conversation if you'd like."

He wanted to cheer her up, but he didn't know her to well and he wasn't sure how to do it.

No magic. She pondered for a moment what would have happened if no one had ever found out about her. If the school didn't offer her a spot, if she stayed close with Petunia, and if Severus had never taken an interest in her that day. Some things she'd be better off without (although now she had to look into that poor Harry's face every time she thought she could never be with James and feel guilty for jeopardizing his existence).

"Oh, I don't know. How's Quidditch going?" It never interested her terribly, but as captain Kingsley must be interested and that was enough for her right now.

He shrugged, "Same as always, I'm writing up some new plays to try and some of the new students might join us at the next practice."

He looked at her curiously, "Are you a big Quidditch fan?"

He didn't think she was but maybe he was wrong.

Would a little Wormtail-esque Schadenfreude be entirely out of order, here?

Well, not exactly. Peter's hated Lily from day one. :-P He just wants to take the opportunity to crow a little.

Avenue Q is a musical parody of Sesame Street. The characters sing songs that include "The Internet is for Porn" and "It Sucks to Be Me". It's not for kids. :P

I haven't actually seen it, but my friend loves it. >.>"
