"He's downstairs!" Sirius announced - slightly out of breath from taking the stairs two at a time. The black-haired Marauder kicked the door shut behind him (Privacy was always an important factor when it was time for Marauder-ing) before walking into the room.

It was time for Operation: Information. Round One!

"Got everything ready?"

"Yeah." James said, staring at the beige potion in front of him. "It smells like old books...something else, too, but mostly books. Well...here goes." He drank the entire vial in a single gulp. It only took two minutes for him to completely transform into Hermione.

"Hm. I guess I need to change into something smaller. She's shorter than I am." He looked down at Hermione's body. "Although that Harry is very lucky, if I may say so myself. I rate...seven on the Lily scale."

"A seven? Wow, either you're feeling really generous or this girl just got one huge compliment." Sirius laughed and went to grab the smaller robes they had hidden away.

"Here you go. Glad we still had these lying around." He handed the robes to James/Hermione.

James shrugged. "I don't know, maybe I like the bookish ones?"

He took the robes from Sirius and moved his eyebrows up and down in a classic James expression. "Can I change in here, or will it scar you for life?"

"If you say so, mate..." Sirius half rolled his eyes.

"I think I'll turn away. Otherwise I might see...that," He motioned at James' 'new' body "every time I look at the girl."

The Marauder shrugged again. "Suit yourself, Padfoot." He said in Hermione's voice. As soon as Sirius turned around, he changed quickly into the smaller robes.

"All right, you're safe." James said, adjusting his shirt. "So I guess I'm going to check the common room first?"

"Harry was just down there five minutes ago, so I'd say it's a safe bet." Sirius shrugged as he turned back around and looked 'James' up and down in approval.

"I'll wait up here a bit, then come down and see how it's going."

James nodded. "I'll be back soon." He opened the door and walked down the stairs into the common room.

"Hermione" looked around for Harry nervously, hoping no one noticed that he was...well, not Hermione.

Lily had been studying in the common room, but she had been thinking about what Severus had asked her to do. She hadn't had an opportunity to talk to either of the girls yet, but once she saw Hermione walking into the common room, she thought it would be a good opportunity.

But how would she bring up their strange looks at Severus? She'd cross that bridge when she got to it.

"Hermione!" Lily said brightly. "How are you?"

James whipped around quickly at the sound of Lily's voice. Lily was talking to him...sounding happy. She wasn't yelling, or screaming, or telling him that he was a royal arse. This was totally worth it.

So apparently the new girl knew Lily. He tried his best to sound intelligent and girly. "Lily! Hello...I'm fine. How are you?"

Something seemed off about Hermione today, but Lily didn't think much of it. She was investigating them because they were a little off, wasn't she?

"Fairly good. I actually had a question for you." She paused to think for a moment. How would she bring Severus into the conversation? She figured she could bring up Severus casually, hope Hermione reacted (or pretend she did if she didn't), and then ask about it. The only thing she could think of was to ask about school. "Um, you know what we've been working on in Transfiguration? My friend Severus and I have been working on it, and are completely lost. Have you figured it out yet?"

She tried to think of whether she was having trouble in Transfiguration this week. She did have a little trouble getting that one thing, hopefully that would be enough that Hermione didn't notice. It's not like she was watching Lily's every move or anything.

James stared at her for a minute before realizing that she had said something. "Huh...oh. Well...Transfiguration?" Luckily, she had picked the one subject he liked.

"Yeah, I know how to do it. Would you like me to explain?" He offered. Although he really wanted to find out the truth about the villagers, this was a great opportunity to ask one of those burning questions...

"I heard you fighting James Potter the other day. Is he really that bad?" He asked innocently.

Damn. She changed the subject. Now Lily was going to have to find another opportunity to bring up Severus which would just end up being terribly awkward, and of course the eventual goal being to ask why she was so awkward around Severus, so basically everything was just awkwardland today.

She had hoped that Hermione wouldn't turn into one of those girls who fawned over James, so she might as well set the record straight with that while she was here. "Yes, he is. He thinks he's absolutely wonderful, but really he just goes around hurting people merely for their existence, people who don't deserve any of it, and then he goes around moping about why I won't get into bed with him when he spent the last five years making my best friend's life miserable. Arrogant berk, he is." Well, maybe that came out a tad cruder than Lily had intended but she assumed the point would get across. "But yes, I would like that help, if you wouldn't mind."

"I disagree with you," he said, trying to sound smarter, "I think that he really, genuinely likes you. He is arrogant, but I've seen him and heard him...his feelings for you aren't that shallow. I think you should give him a chance."

James cleared his throat. "I'd be happy to help you with the Transfiguration homework, but now is a bad time...I'm trying to find my friend Harry, you see."

He glanced up at her. Lily was acting a little off. "Is something bothering you? You seem distracted."

"Well, you haven't seen him at his worst. He delights in torture, and no matter what he thinks of me, it doesn't change what he thinks about everyone else." She was sure that Hermione would understand if she had heard the things that he'd done to Severus over the years, but Lily didn't want to drag out old wounds. He'd probably prefer it if at least some people didn't know what he'd experienced.

"Oh, I haven't seen Harry. But that's fine." She tried to figure out how to respond to the last question. Perhaps she could get the answer out of Hermione before she ran off to find Harry. "Erm, well, I know you mentioned that I looked like Harry's dea- his mother and all, but I was wondering - a lot of your friends look at some of the other students oddly - well, like Severus for instance." Awkward. So terribly awkward. But she figured that Hermione and her had already tread on 'You look like this dead woman!' territory, this couldn't be much worse.

"I still think you should give him a shot. People change..."

She did? James looked off to the side, starting to form an idea in his head. So Harry looked like James, and his mother looked like Lily? That was really weird. Maybe they were shape-shifters from the future...looked like Lily suspected it too.

He turned back to her, trying to think of some intelligent distraction or excuse. But unfortunately, James...was an idiot.

"I'll tell you the truth if you want to know that badly...but you can't tell the others that you know."

Yeah, real smart...considering he had no idea what the truth actually was.

Lily decided to drop the James subject. James would probably manage to do something horrible in due time that would make these students see what he really was.

She was a bit taken aback with how Hermione so quickly offered to tell her the truth, but this suggested that Newcastle's excuse was not the correct one. It wasn't nearly as exciting as Hermione made the truth sound. "Yes, I would like to know, actually. And I won't tell your friends."

He cleared his throat and placed a privacy charm around them, trying to waste time as he thought of a reasonable excuse. Something Lily would buy...one of the theories Harry had denied?

"We're from another dimension." He explained, trying to appear stressed out (not too difficult, considering the situation.) "In my dimension, James and Harry are twins, you're dating James, and Snape is the biggest jerk in the school. We were suddenly thrown into this one--where some of us don't even attend Hogwarts."

Merlin, he was a genius. "We've been trying to keep it a secret, but it's difficult to communicate."

Lily laughed. She was rather surprised by the joke, Hermione seemed like a rather serious sort of girl. Of course she wasn't going to spit out the big great secret, whatever it was. Lily was getting all caught up in this paranoia that she didn't even think straight. "Well played, Miss Puckle. I shouldn't have asked, it's a bizarre question. Next time I visit the dimension where Severus is a jerk and has three heads, I'll think about giving James a chance."

Okay, so he wasn't a genius. Or at least, if he was, Lily was smarter.

"It's not a joke, honestly. I'm being serious." He was...mostly. "How could I possibly make this up? You can't deny how Harry looks like James, or that we're clearly not normal villagers." James rolled his eyes. "Can you explain how I already know Slughorn and McGonagall? The easy adjustment?"

His theory was so believable that he almost fell for it himself!

Lily kept it light around Hermione, but it did cross her mind that she should be careful if the villagers were catching on that some of the Hogwarts students were suspicious. She should warn Severus before he went to talk to the Slytherins.

"Did you do theatre at your village? We've never had it but you'd be quite good."

James almost said that she was right, but knew that would give him away.

"I didn't do theatre. Actually, my lies are usually better than that..." He admitted, before he realized something. "Hey, can I ask you something...personal?"

"There's someone I like, but I've been a jerk to him in the past. How do I get...him...to give me a chance? He doesn't trust me--kind of like how you don't trust James Potter. My best friend is not giving me any helpful advice, as usual."

This must be why Hermione kept standing up for James. Oh, well, that made a little sense.

"You just have to stop being a jerk to him. If James had ever made the effort to stop being such an arrogant prick I would look at the situation differently. And not just, like, stop being a jerk when he's around, you have to actually stop. But I've never really seen you being a jerk, Hermione, so maybe the boy is wrong."

"Well, I've never gotten along with this friend of his...but his friend hates me, too, so it's not entirely my fault."

"He automatically assumes I'm a jerk to everyone just because I dislike that one person." He was a little bitter about the whole thing. "My friends say that I should just give up, but I love him." James sighed. "No matter what I do or say, he won't believe me."

If Lily had known Hermione better, she probably would have figured this out, but as it was she was still thinking that Hermione might have a mirror situation, or at least just be spying for James.

"Well, you probably wouldn't like him as much if he wasn't willing to stand up for his friends, right? That's what people should do for their friends. That's what I mean about not just not being a jerk when he's there, you have to do things like leave her friends alone."

Even if this wasn't for James's sake, Lily felt like she was giving advice to James. It was strange, she'd said this stuff millions of times but it never seemed to register before.

Kingsley was sitting in the common room reading and had seen Sirius fly up the stairs. That wasn't unusual in and of itself, but what followed was always worth watching. He turned the page in his book, alert.
