Christmas Dinner
The House tables had been cleared away, and only one table remained in the centre of the hall, shrunken to half its normal size. Less intimidating, Albus thought, for their visitors. He shook his head with a small grin. They were not really visitors, were they? They had been here before -- albeit twenty-two years from now.

The house-elves had outdone themselves: two roast turkeys, three geese, stuffing, sausage and bacon rolls, Christmas rice, cranberry sauce, roast potatoes and shallots, stuffed mushrooms, all manner of breads and brandy butter, tripe, tureens of gravy, mince pies, trifle, pumpkin and almond tarts, and crackers littered the table. And to top it all off, a plum pudding stood in between every pair of place settings.

Smiling around at all assembled, Albus raised his glass. "Compliments of the season to you all."

[Open to anyone remaining at the school for the holidays.]

The hall didn't really seem different to Hermione, yet she couldn't help but look around and marvel. Upon realizing that the dinner had already started, she awkwardly moved towards the table and sat down, excusing herself for the interruption.

The food seemed the same as well, and she couldn't help but wonder if it had ever or would ever change. She glanced around the table and, noticing that others were eating and talking, decided to introduce herself.

"I'm Hermione Puckle." She said with a smile to the person next to her. "One of the students from the...er...plague-filled village."

Sappho jumped in her seat when the new girl sitting next to her introduced herself. She couldn't remember the last time someone tried to get to know her. "My name is Sappho Duncannon," she said, nodding and smiling nervously. "I'm in Slytherin. How about you?" Her voice was very light and timid.

"Ah, Gryffindor." Hermione said with a smile. Even though the girl was in Slytherin, it couldn't hurt to give her a chance. She seemed nice enough. "Merry Christmas." She said warmly, wondering briefly if she knew this girl in the future. Thinking about the fact that Sappho was the same age as her parents made Hermione mentally wince.

"Happy Christmas," she said, forcing a smile. Gryffindors liked to bully her, so she couldn't let down her guard, even around new-comers. "What year are you in, Miss Puckle?" Sappho asked, having just come up with a wicked plan.

"Fifth." She said, noticing the formality in Sappho's words, and that her smile wasn't very sincere. She felt disappointed--maybe she had overestimated the Slytherins.

"May I ask the same of you?" If this girl wanted a battle of fake kindness, Hermione would gladly oblige. "I love your outfit. It's adorable."

Sappho grinned. "I'm a fifth year, too. And thank you. This dress is my Papa's Christmas gift to me. He's so thoughtful." After taking a sip of tea, she cleared her throat and took a deep breath. "Have you gotten to know your dorm-mates?"

"Well, I haven't really spent time up there yet." She said thoughtfully, trying to remember to substitute "village" for "future".

"Although...I know everyone from the village, and a few of them are in Gryffindor. It is a very small village, you see. We, er, went to the same school. So I think settling in will be pretty easy."

It wasn't really a lie.

"Well, one of your dorm-mates isn't a particularly nice person," Sappho said softly. She began to grit her teeth and clench the edge of the table. Don't start crying again, she thought to herself. "Most of the boys are horrid bullies, but they'll likely leave you alone. They only pick on people like me."

She blinked at Sappho, amazed at the rapid change of moods. "Well, I'm sorry to hear that they pick on you, but perhaps they consider it something friends do to one another?"

Wait. A group of boys? Horrid bullies to Slytherins?

"You wouldn't be, by any chance, referring to James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew, would you? And the...single dorm-mate who isn't nice wouldn't be Lily Po--LILY EVANS would it?"

She had nearly said Lily's future last name, but hopefully the emphasized, correct last name would overshadow her mistake.

She nodded, wondering if Miss Puckle knew them better than she had let on. "No, they're not my friends. I don't have any friends. So have they shown their true colours to you already?" Sappho asked.

"Erm..." Well, this was a fine fix she had gotten herself into.

"We only met briefly, a long time ago, and I don't think they would remember me. Nearly everything I've heard is a rumor." Hermione said, hoping she would believe that. "I'm sorry that they mistreat you."

Sappho shrugged as she contemplated how to explain it. Evans had hurt her more than anyone else, but never directly. That cow had yet to so much as acknowledge her existence. "It's not that bad. I can take care of myself. It's someone else they hurt. Someone precious to me," she said almost inaudibly. "I just thought I ought to warn you. Best to be alert, you know."

Hermione listened to the Slytherin, stirring her food. She seemed rather lonely. "I appreciate you warning me." Merlin, if Lily Evans ended up hating Hermione, she would be getting an earful from Harry and Ron.

But just because she would try to get along with Lily didn't mean that she couldn't also try to be friends with this girl.

"Sappho, I know I'm a Gryffindor and you're a Slytherin, but all the same, perhaps we could hang out some time? Be friends?" She offered with a kind smile.

"Hang out?" she asked, furrowing her brow in confusion. "I suppose I don't understand the terms. Never had any real friends, so this is all new to me. But all right. We can try." Sappho was pretty nervous. It could be a ruse to pull some sort of embarrassing prank on her. On the other hand, Miss Puckle might prove useful for keeping tabs on her enemies in Gryffindor or even getting in Severus' good graces.

She geniunely felt that this girl wasn't evil, just a bit lonely. "You know, spend time? Do things friends do? I'm sure we have something in common. Do you like reading or writing? What's your favorite book?" Hermione asked, hoping that Sappho shared some hobbies with her.

Now that was something Sappho understood. "Oh, I love books -- especially poetry -- and writing." She grinned whilst compiling a mental list to read off. "The Metamorphoses is my favourite poetry book and The Mabinogion is my favourite prose. As for non-fiction, I'd say The Twelve Caesars or Plutarch's Life of Antony. What about you?"

"I'd say my favorite book is Hogwarts: A History." Hermione said, smiling fondly at memories of it. "Oh, I also enjoy books about time travel. Would you happen to know if the library has any good ones?" Perhaps Sappho knew of a useful book.

She looked up in concentration. "None that I've read, but I could ask my papa. He's read every book in there. Papa went to school here back in the thirties and forties," she replied. Sappho took a few bites of her pudding before going on. "I could write to him for you, if you like."

Hermione's eyes lit up. "If you don't mind, I would really appreciate that." Playing the part of a time-travel enthusiast could be useful after all!

Then another idea came to her. "One day we should visit the library together. You could show me those books you like, and I could try to track down some books on time travel. I'm sure the school library has a bigger collection than the village." She smiled. "Would you be interested?"

Sappho washed her pudding down with some tea. "All right. Though those books I mentioned are probably in the Muggle Studies section, even though Welsh and the Romans were primarily Wizards." She lowered her voice before continuing. "I probably shouldn't be saying this on Christmas, but that's why the Jews and Romans didn't like each other. Even when that Muggle-born, Jesus, came along, it still took the Romans a few centuries to realise Muggles could produce wizards. Of course, Muggles ended up taking over and they hushed everything up. Papa told me all about it. He knows the real history. I'll have to get you in touch with him. Have you heard of him; Himerus Duncannon?"

"I'm sorry, I don't think I have." Hermione said quietly, taking a quick sip of her own drink. "Do you...dislike non-magical people?" She asked, wondering what would happen if she mentioned her bloodline. The pureblood/Muggle-born struggles had already begun, right? Was Sappho different?

Were any of the past-Slytherins?

"Muggles? Well, I think we shouldn't have to hide from them. The secrecy statutes are patently ridiculous. As long as they stay out of my way, I don't really care about them. Of course, Papa says they're boorish fools. With the way they look at us on the street, I'm tempted to agree. But then Papa makes a face at them and they go running. It's rather funny," she laughed.

Hermione smiled at her. Sappho really was unlike the other Slytherins she was used to. "You really admire your father, don't you." It was a statement, and she took a spoonful of pudding as she tried to phrase her next question.

"If this is too personal, feel free to decline answering, but I can't help but wonder...why are you at Hogwarts over the break?"

"Oh, yes. I love Papa. Guess I'm pretty lucky, having a brilliant, famous father and all. Not many people can say that." She puffed up her chest and smirked. Boasting about her father was one of her favourite past times. "I always stay for Christmas and Easter. We don't take these holidays too seriously. You see, Papa's always busy with things and he doesn't really like Scottish winters. He's in the south of France right now. I don't like going home, anyway. There's not much to do and no one to talk to." Sappho neglected to mention that she likely wouldn't talk much if there were people her age around.

Many things about this situation seemed odd to Neville. First, shouldn't he be with Gran? After all, he had never spent Christmas break at school. Gran didn't allow that. So, he had never experienced the Hogwarts Christmas feast before. And second? Half the time he couldn't remember basic stuff. How is he supposed to remember that he has a new name?

Thankfully, some of his friends - and a few people he really didn't like - were around him. He could pretend, right? But, what if he messed up? He really wished that he had Trevor here. He missed that toad. And his remberall would have been nice too.

Smiling a little, Neville tried to talk to some of the other people at the table. But he didn't know them! Some of them looked familiar in a way that he felt like he had seen them before, but he couldn't really know. He figured if someone wanted to talk to him, they would.
