Dumbledore attempts to lay the rumours surrounding the Future Students to rest.
For the previous week, meals at Hogwarts had been accompanied by the constant buzzing of whispers in the Great Hall. Arrival of these new students on the school grounds was a complete secret, so naturally, the whole school knew. The news had spread like wildfire, and before the rampant rumours had the chance to solidify fully into misconceptions, Albus wished to put an end to the speculation. It wasn't a special event -- just another dinner in the Hall -- but a hush fell over the expectant pupils as their Headmaster got to his feet.

"By now, you have all undoubtedly heard of the recent arrivals at Hogwarts," Albus said, smiling around at those assembled. "These students dwelt in a remote village that was recently ravaged by a plague. They are the only survivors. In the days to come, when our guests feel up to venturing beyond the hospital wing, they will be moving into dormitories along with students their own age, will attend lessons with the rest of you, and come to meals here in the Great Hall, with all of us. I would ask each and every one of our students to do his best to make our guests feel welcome at Hogwarts.

"Madam Pomfrey does not believe the plague these students encountered poses any threat to anyone else here at Hogwarts. To be on the safe side, however, our visitors have been placed in a strict quarantine until our diligent school nurse can ascertain the risk. The western portion of the hospital wing is therefore out of bounds, with no one but myself and Madam Pomfrey allowed entrance, until further notice. Please be aware that disregarding this warning may cost you more than House points. It could literally mean the difference between life or death."

When he had resumed his seat, Albus was greeted with a sea of puzzled and even frightened looks, but he really couldn't say anything more. He didn't really know anything more himself, as Poppy had given them all strong sleeping draughts to ease them through the worst of their injuries. This cover story, however, ought to work as well as any other explanation, in the absence of the full story. After all, the students themselves couldn't tell him much. Even their thoughts had been jumbled and confused -- flashes of violent images, with few cohesive threads linking them together. Once they were awake and aware, Albus would attempt to get to the bottom of all this.

Sirius looked back down from the headmaster to the table and his friends. "Plague?" He raised an eyebrow. "Seems a bit odd to me..."

Peter nearly choked on an overlarge bite of potato when Professor Dumbledore said the word "plague," but he had to admit that Sirius' reaction put him at ease, somewhat. "What's so odd about a plague?"

"Well come on, think about it, Petey." Sirius said thoughtfully as he bit into a green bean, waving it around a bit as he talked. "How often do you do you hear in the news 'Today it is my unfortunate duty to announce The Plague has struck the streets of London.'?" He performed in his best announcer voice and then laughed. "It's just seems odd."

Peter emitted a bit of a girlish giggle before he could stop himself. "All right," he said, nodding, and managing to curb his laughter to a large grin. "But Professor Dumbledore didn't say the plague, did he? Just a plague?" His mum had told him about the Black Plague, and carts of dead people taken to mass graves, and burning the corpses, and all sorts of icky things, but he didn't think that was what Professor Dumbledore had meant. If so, he probably would have been evacuating the school instead of just telling them all to stay out of the hospital wing. Starting to get worried again, Peter looked nervously around at Remus and James, for support, and then back to Sirius. "You don't think there's any reason to be scared, do you?"

"Of course not, Peter. Dumbledore knows better than to expose us to some awful disease." Lily took a minute to examine the food on her fork. He wouldn't, would he? Dumbledore was a great wizard, but didn't always seem fully on top of things. But a plague, a plague was a bit too much to play around with. They were quarantined in the hospital wing and would remain so until it was safe, Lily concluded.

Sirius' eyes lit up a moment later with an idea. He turned to his best friend seated next to him. "You know, James, I wonder..." He gave him a meaningful look. If there these students did have some sort of disease, might be something to see...at least, you know, get a peak into the hospital wing. Dumbledore had been so general about what was going on, wouldn't hurt to have a look for themselves.

Peter nearly worked up the nerve to tell Evans off -- something along the lines of, "I didn't ask you. I was talking to Sirius." -- when she answered his question. But before he could draw breath to say anything, he noticed that Sirius moved his head nearer to James and dropped his voice. Peter leant closer, as well, ever worried that he might be left out of the conversation.

It scared Lily that she could practically see through Sirius's head to what he was thinking. It wasn't a stretch though, Dumbledore gave a direct order, so it was only a matter of time before these four did the exact opposite. "I hope you won't try and get in there. Actually, go ahead, have fun," she added sarcastically.

Peter couldn't help giggling again, and -- almost bravely -- added, "You tell her, Sirius." Even if James liked Evans, for some reason, it was nice to see Sirius stand up to her.

Frank was sitting a ways down from Sirius and Peter, and was taking the news a bit of a frown. A plague? He would have thought his mother would have owled him about it (or rather, howlered him about it, saying he should refrain from touching anything lest he get it. She was a careful woman.) but he took it as Dumbledore had said, and nodded a bit as he got all the details sorted in his head before looking back down the table at his house mates. Well, he certainly did look forward to meeting the new students, at least!

"Bad news for those students, what?" He offered to the person sitting beside him, shaking his head, "Imagine. We'll have to be awfully welcoming to make up for their losses!"

Kingsley nodded and swallowed, before replying to Frank. "I wonder how long they'll be in quarantine. And if they will be joining us. Let me know if you here anything at your prefects meetings yeah?"

Kingsley wasn't stupid he knew who would get the most urgent information. He had to say he didn't envy Frank the position of prefect at all.

The Ravenclaw Table

Nevin looked up from his plate. "Plague?" he muttered before slurping a spoonful of stew. "I do hope they're fully cured before they start joining us. Tutoring is tiresome enough without having to worry about catching a deadly illness." Who Nevin was saying this to was anyone's guess. He wasn't exactly chatty with anyone at Hogwarts, even those in his own House.

"Quarantine must be so very boring," Lexine muttered, leaning on the table. She wondered what it would take for her to get in and see what was going on. Under normal circumstances, she might be able to, but Madame Pomfrey was fairly sharp when it came to these things. Years of telling students to go back to class would do that to a woman, Lexine supposed.

Elizabeth sat at the end of the table, with no one around to talk to. A plague? she thought, Oh, that is so unfortunate. I do hope they're alright.

She looked around to see everyone else, and sighed, wishing she could find the courage to talk to them.
"I need a bottle of courage," she said aloud to herself, alluding to The Wizard of Oz.

"Bottle of courage? Is that a potion?" Nevin asked the sixth year girl. He hadn't heard of such a thing. Not yet, at least. It couldn't hurt to get a little prepping for NEWT level classes whenever possible, he figured. His eyes were wide interest.

It took Elizabeth a few moments to realize the boy was speaking to her.
"Nnngghh," was her first response. She cleared her throat and said,"It's...er, from a movie, actually. A muggle movie."

She smiled sheepishly and tried to ignore the red creeping onto her cheeks.

How often did a pretty girl talk to him about things other than their studies? Best to attempt turning on 'the charm,' as it were. Nevin wasn't quite sure how one did that. His dad had a way of acting around his mum that involved shoulder-swaying and light humour. It was worth a shot...

"Are there wizarding movies?" he asked after a moment, rocking side to side in his seat. Nevin then gave goofy, slightly forced laugh.

"Er, no, I don't think so." She could tell her faces was incredibly red, so she looked down at her food.

The girl looked to be embarrassed, which made him think she was put off. Of course, most girls thought his was a big-nosed geek. Rejection was to be expected. "Oh... Okay," Nevin said in shaking voice that cracked on the second syllable. He flinched at the sound of it. After clearing his throat, he scratched his head and grimaced. His palms were beginning to sweat, so he clandestinely blotted them on his robes.

Elizabeth felt horrible. It wasn't his fault that she was intensely socially inept. She looked at the boy.

"I'm Elizabeth," she told him, trying to smile. "Who are you?"

"I'm Nevin," he said. Thankfully, his voice didn't squeak this time. Nevin flashed an anxious smile and scooted a little closer to where Elizabeth sat. He considered offering his hand for her to shake, but thought better of it. Clammy palms would definitely put her off. "Nice to meet you, by the way."

Now it was starting to sound like Elizabeth was interested in procuring his 'tutoring' services. Granted, he rarely had customers in his own House, but it did happen once in a great while. "Other than the mandated ones, I take Arithmancy and Ancient Runes. Though I do tutor in most every subject," Nevin said. His voice remained calm. He needed to test the waters before he began talking business. "How about you?"

"A tutor? That's interesting," Elizabeth certainly didn't need help in any of her subjects, but it was nice to know someone offered help anyway. "I take Arithmancy, Charms, Defense, Potions, Transfiguration and Herbology. I dropped some classes after OWLS, though. I used to take a lot more."

The Slytherin Table
[info]sappho_or

Sappho only half-processed what Dumbledore had said. She was listening, but her mind and her eyes were focused somewhere else. He was seated on the other side of the Slytherin table, a few places down. And he was much more interesting to her than their headmaster, new students, or any mysterious disease.

It was her routine to stare at Severus during meals. And classes. And pretty much any time he was in sight. She'd been doing so since the first time she'd seen him, during their sorting. Just talk to him, you coward, she thought to herself. But the idea alone was enough to make her face go red.

Severus took in the Headmaster's words with his usual amount of scepticism, frowning. All right -- so Madam Pomfrey had said there was no danger. Obviously not, since both she and Professor Dumbledore would have been dead, if there had been. This plague had killed all the adults in that village, after all. Had it killed the younger children, too? It would seem so, if these students were the only survivors. That would lead one to believe that teenagers were somehow immune. But if that were the case, then why the quarantine? Wouldn't all the other students at Hogwarts be safe, by default? Surely Dumbledore was clever enough to come to the same conclusion. That made Severus think there was more to this cover story -- may as well call it what it was -- than met the eye.

Layla had strategically placed herself in the middle of the Slytherin table, as always. Her brow furrowed in concern. "A plague? It sounds awful! Those poor kids." She was curious to see what they would be like when they came out of quarantine.
