Valentine's Day Dinner [backdated to earlier this evening]
Dinner was served at the usual time on Thursday night. The usual foods were served on the usual plates with the usual napkins, silverware, and cups beside them. But that was where the normalcy ended.

Instead of the usual house tables, there were several dozen smaller ones scattered around the room. At some tables, couples could be found, gazing lovingly into each other's eyes. At others, rowdy groups of friends enjoyed hanging out together and avoided mentioning what the meaning was behind the day they were celebrating.

No matter what size the table was, each one was covered with a red, pink, or white tablecloth and had a centerpiece with a similar color scheme. In addition to the dozen or so chocolates that were scattered around the centerpieces, there were also small boxes of sweets on each plate. When it was time to leave, every girl (and every boy who cared to take one) was given a red, pink, or white rose.

Luna stood a few feet from the door to the Great Hall. She was staring at the ceiling as she awaited Neville. Her formal dress from the donation supplies fit her nicely, unlike the baggier clothes she usually wore in her own time. However, being maroon, it didn't match the lime green heels she had on. Nor did it look quite right with the bottle cap necklace and earrings she was wearing. They weren't part of Luna's typical formal attire, but she'd just finished making them and wanted to show off her handiwork.

Neville was running late. Not that that in and of itself was a surprise. He tended to run late more often than not. And it wasn't on purpose. No - he just tended to forget what he was supposed to be doing. This evening after talking to Luna in his Legens he'd decided that if he was going to go to the Ball with her, he wanted her to have flowers. So, going to the greenhouses, he'd picked her a few flowers and went back to his dorm room to get dressed. Even though he'd gotten dressed in plenty of time, well he'd gotten distracted with a book he'd found in the library on modern (so in his case past) uses for certain herbs. Looking up, he saw that it was dark and indeed, he'd forgotten to leave on time - AGAIN! Grabbing the flowers, he ran out of his room and down to the Great Hall, scanning the crowd for Luna. Not that it was hard to find her. She stood out easily. Smiling a bit, he walked over to her. "Hello, Luna. I like your necklace."

"Hi, Neville. And thank you. I just made this one to replace my old necklace. The earrings, too, as I don't have my favourite orange ones now, either. People seem to leave a lot of these caps in the grass, so I helped myself to them." Luna's eyes blinked very slowly as she spoke, almost like a frog's. "Are those flowers you've been growing for Herbology? My class is still harvesting bubotubers right now."

Nodding, Neville listened to Luna talk about making her necklace. It was nice to him that she could find simple joy in something as off the wall as making a necklace out of bottle caps. "Well, if I see any lying around, I shall pick them up and save them for you so that you can make another necklace sometime." Forgetting about the flowers he had in his hand, he looked around for a second before remembering. Laughing softly, he held them out. "Actually, no. These are ones that I...took from the Greenhouse. They'll never notice they were gone. But I thought that you should have some pretty flowers tonight." Blushing a little, he looked down at his feet. Sometimes he wondered if he ever actually could get through the day without fully embarassing himself.

"Flowers for me? That's terribly sweet of you. I never thought I'd get flowers from anyone. Thank you," she said. Luna leaned forward to smell the bouquet. "What kind are they? They're quite pretty and smell lovely, too." She straightened up and grinned at him. "Did you put a freshness charm on them or do we need to put them in water? I suppose we should be going inside now anyway, so I could put them in a glass of water when we get to the table."

Neville was glad she liked the flowers. He had been a little worried that perhaps she had a weird flower allergy or something that he should have remembered but...didn't. So, it was a relief that they didn't make her sneeze and break out in a rash. It was then that her thought about her question. A freshness charm? Had he done one? He really couldn't remember so her comment about putting them in a glass of water made him nod. "I'm really not sure if I put a freshness charm on them." He blushed a little, his forgetfulness a widely known about thing back home. "They are daisies. They seemed so cheerful." Shrugging a bit, he nodded. "Inside, yes. Dinner then the Ball." He felt a little bad about the ball - he hadn't been planning on attending, but there was something about Luna that fascinated him - made him want to spend time with her. He wouldn't deny the little crush that he had on her - well not to himself anyway.

She tilted her head to the side, still smiling as she stared into Neville's eyes. "Daisies, I should've known. My dad says I have eyes as big and bright as daisies. Or maybe Mum said that and he just repeated it. I forgot. Well, let's go in!" Luna turned and walked into the Great Hall, leaving him to follow. "I think that's a good table," she said, pointing at a random one that didn't seem any different from the rest. Luna sat down unceremoniously, then poured a glass of water. She took a sip from it before giving it to Neville to hold the flowers.

Lily, while not planning on attending the ball (James would most certainly stalk her the entire night, leading everyone to believe they were there together), could not avoid eating for the night and thus was forced into the traditional Valentine's day dinner. She got down to the great hall early enough so that she could find an empty table and not have to deal with the awkward situation of butting in on one of her friends.

"You look exceedingly beautiful tonight," Severus whispered as he and Sappho crossed the entrance hall. He probably ought to have said earlier, but he imagined their entrance would be all the more impressive if Sappho was grinning from ear to ear with that adorable blush blossoming on her cheeks. Of course, he also knew ahead of time how incredible she would look, since he had practically hand-picked her outfit. Perhaps that was awfully controlling of him, but Sappho had specifically asked his opinion. Was he supposed to have said whatever she chose would look just fine? He honestly didn't know. Shaking his head, he tried to shrug his concerns off. No need to ruin their evening by second-guessing himself on every little thing.

"Thank you, my Prince!" she lilted, wearing one of the widest grins ever. "And you look even more handsome than usual." Her face was almost as red as her hair. She laid her head on his shoulder, clutching his arm, though she turned slightly so as not to smash her corsage. Sappho gave a happy sigh, knowing they made the best couple there.

"So, did you happen to choose a daffodil corsage for any particular reason?" Severus asked, pulling out a chair for Sappho, once he had selected a table. He thought she might have, considering that she had previously mentioned a love of all things Welsh, but he wanted to make certain. If so, he might have to -- eventually -- add a daffodil and a shamrock to whatever spoon he carved her in the not-too-distant future.

She tried to stifle her giggle, but it managed to escape. "Yes... In honour of my Welsh boyfriend. It is your country's national flower, after all." Sappho sat down, still grinning. "The yellow doesn't exactly go with either of our outfits, and I much prefer darker colours, but I wanted to show my fondness of your heritage."

Sappho's giggle was contagious, and Severus soon found himself sniggering as he pushed in her chair. "The colours of the actual national 'flower' of Wales would match our outfits much better, but I doubt you'd like to be seen in public with a leek pinned to your dress." Grinning, he pulled up his own chair and sat. "The leek was the emblem of Wales for centuries, but oddly enough, both 'daffodil' and 'leek' translate to the same word in Welsh: cenhinen."

Sappho's eyes went wide as she listened to him. "You're quite right, I don't care to have a pungent root affixed to me," she laughed. "No offense, though. And I must say, the word is very sexy. You'll have to speak Welsh to me more often." She licked her lips and winked at him.

"I thought everything I said was sexy," Severus said, raising an eyebrow. He'd thought about attempting to pout, but he wasn't certain how well that would work, and he didn't want Sappho to think he was actually upset. Instead he opted for putting on a stern expression, though he couldn't help smirking a second later.

"Oh, everything you say is sexy! It's just that the Welsh is especially sexy," she purred. Sappho had shivered at the sight of his narrowed eyes and giggled at his smirk. "Much like your facial expressions. They're all so dishy, but when you arch your eyebrow or you smirk, that's the best." She then started portioning out some food for herself, before he caused her to turn into a complete pile of mush.

Severus smiled, shaking his head, and began to serve himself, as well. "That's good to know. If I'm going to go to all the effort of moving my facial muscles, I'd best make each expression count." He paused again, looked at her pointedly, and arched his eyebrow once more, smirking. If she liked that expression the best, he might as well not hold back, since his aim was to show her an awfully good time. And besides, he didn't want to get soup on the poem he'd written her, so that would have to wait until later.

She laughed again at his retort. Yet when Severus gave her that look, she made a whimpering moan and trembled noticeably. Sappho was a little worried she might faint if he kept going out of his way to make her weak in the knees. "Well, you don't have to, though I do enjoy it," she suspired.

Leaning closer to speak directly in Sappho's ear, Severus purred, "I don't have to ... what, exactly? Make every expression count? Or simply go to the effort of moving my facial muscles?" He couldn't help it. Seeing her tremble made him want to press his advantage and see her tremble more. To -- he felt almost ashamed to think it -- watch her squirm.

Sappho was panting. Her skin was alive with goose-flesh. "You don't have to make every expression count. You can just relax right now," she murmured. "I don't want to put pressure on you to always be as attractive and exciting as possible. You're still very attractive wearing other expressions."

Severus chuckled, sitting back in his chair. Though Sappho looked delectable that way, if he teased her any more, they were liable to attract undue attention from the staff. "That hardly seems fair," he said, folding his arms over his chest and shrugging one shoulder. "You're always as attractive and exciting as possible. Shouldn't I strive to be the same?"

"If you want to, then all right. I just want you to be comfortable. You can be yourself around me, whether that means smirking or not. I think you're perfect exactly the way you are," she said. Sappho smiled warmly at him. "I want to be fair to you. That means not forcing you to do anything you don't feel like and not barring you from what you do want to do." She picked up her glass of punch, gazing intently at him as she drank from it.

He couldn't help smirking at that. In fact, it would have taken considerable effort not to. "I'm always comfortable when I'm with you," Severus whispered, never taking his eyes off hers, his gaze every bit as intense. "That was never an issue." Of course, the idea of forcing Sappho to do things she didn't feel like doing, or barring her from doing things she wanted to do, was rather exciting. He wondered, however, if he would ever be comfortable with telling her things like that. Would she think him a fiend if he did? He certainly wouldn't say anything along those lines if it would mean losing her.

Dimples formed on her cheeks, pitting them like sinkholes. Her heart radiated warmth inside her chest. "It fills me with great pride to know that. Making you comfortable has become my top priority," she said. Sappho reached out with her left hand to lightly rub the fabric of his sleeve. "You know, that silk noil truly becomes you. I think I still prefer you in black rather than green, but these dress robes of yours are absolutely stunning. You have impeccable taste."

"Thank you," Severus said quietly, and his cheeks started to feel a bit warm, despite the noticeable chill in the hall. He was glad to know Sappho approved of the robes, since she had funded the purchase in the first place, though it was still a touch embarrassing. "I've never liked that shiny weave of silk, but this is fabric is fairly nice." He stopped himself before adding how the clerk at Gladrag's had said silk noil was fairly resistant to wrinkles and one of the easiest forms of silk to care for. "Perhaps next time, I'll get some black dress robes instead? And hopefully, you'll feel up to helping me pick them out."

She let her eyes wander about his robes, admiring the way they clung to him. "I do like shiny silk, but satin is my favourite. Even more so now, because your skin feels like satin," she breathed. "So soft and smooth." Sappho let go of his sleeve to caress his hand. "I'll definitely go with you next time. I wish I could have gone yesterday. Rotten luck, us falling ill one after the other."

"At least we're both feeling better now," Severus said, shrugging and turning his hand to clasp hers. Smiling softly, he tried to resume eating. The food didn't particularly hold his interest, however, delicious though it undoubtedly was. He'd rather feast on the vision sitting across the table from him. Only Sappho could satisfy his hunger.
