Dinnertime Conversation
"So..." Severus began in a nonchalant tone, once he and Sappho were seated at the Slytherin table and had each served themselves ample portions of Bubble and Squeak. "Who is this Puckle girl, and why should I hate her?" He smirked slightly, raising and eyebrow in addition to his fork, and took a bite as he awaited her answer.

"I sat next to her at the Christmas feast. She started talking to me and suggested we be friends. Of course, it was too good to have been true," Sappho said before having another bite. "She's one of those new students, but she was already a Gryffindor bigot. Kept downplaying what Potter's gang does to bully people. And then she fed me all these lies about how her friends are stars of some regional, amateur Quidditch team. I hardly pay attention to Quidditch, but even I know there's no such thing."

"Regional amateur Quidditch team?" Severus asked, trying hard not to snort. "That is the most absurd rubbish I have ever heard." He dropped his voice a little and slipped his arm about Sappho's waist so that he could whisper in her ear whilst scanning the Gryffindor table. "Which one is she?"

Sappho pointed at a girl with brown, bushy hair who was seated at the Gryffindor table. "That's her," she whispered. "With that hideous hair. What is it with Gryffindors and their ugly hair? Do none of them have combs? Or are they actually trying to look like lions with their ratted manes?"

That caught him quite off guard, and Severus fairly choked on his pumpkin juice from laughing. He managed to calm down after a bit, following a little coughing, but he was still smiling afterward, despite the discomfort. "It does seem to be something of an epidemic, doesn't it?" After pecking her temple, he turned back to his plate. "So, what happened, exactly?"

She smirked when Severus laughed so hard. It made her proud to know he liked her sense of humour. "Well, she kept going on about how she couldn't wait to meet Potter and Black, even after I told her about all their disgusting behaviour. In fact, it seemed to make her want to know them more." Sappho had some tea as she tried to maintain her composure.

"Surely you're kidding?" Severus asked, frowning across the hall at the bushy-haired girl. "Is she some sort of incurable masochist?" He couldn't imagine how somebody who didn't know that Potter and Black were big Quidditch heroes, and heard what they were like first, would still want to meet them. "Well, Gryffindor is the House that caters to the brain damaged," he continued, shrugging, "apparently even if the actual brain damage is delayed until after the person is sorted."

Sappho gave a wicked snigger. "I do believe you're right! Puckle certainly couldn't get it through her thick skull that endangering someone's life is not a prank and insulting someone in public is not misspeaking. Daft, little bint," she scoffed.

"Well, it depends," Severus added bitterly. "If it's only a Slytherin life, or a Slytherin's dignity, who cares?" His sneer transformed into a scowl a second later, however, and he wondered if he'd said too much. But no -- he hadn't. Sappho has already said that the Puckle girl was a Gryffindor bigot, so he was probably safe. Or so he hoped.

"Exactly! It's as if we're less than human. You know, I have to wonder if they don't make blood status out to be a bigger controversy than it is, just to rationalise their prejudice against us," she said. "Puckle made a point of asking me if I disliked Muggle-borns." After another bite, Sappho began again. "And she also tried to to convince me that their 'regional' Quidditch club was a special, secret team made up of students from various schools."

"None of the other magical schools are big enough to contribute more than one or two players," Severus said, still frowning, but now shaking his head, as well. "That would make a truly pitiful league." What really set him to thinking, however, was what Sappho said earlier. She had a very good point, actually. "The poor repressed majority," he sneered. "Demonising a full quarter of the school just in case blood status might matter to some of us."

She nodded whilst still chewing, having just cleaned her plate. "Slytherins get it much worse than everyone else, but we're the ones who are supposed to be vicious and evil. It's ridiculous! I'm so fed up with this school and its double standards," Sappho murmured as she poured herself some more tea.

"Even more ridiculous considering that people in the other Houses are just as likely to start going on about their lineage and how pure their blood is when pressed." Severus took a deep breath and exhaled with a sigh before his temper managed to put him off his food. "There are just as many blood status bigots outside Slytherin House as in, but blood purity is only 'evil' when we espouse it." With another sigh, he realised his attempts to curb his anger weren't really helping his appetite. "Let's talk about something else," he added in a feeble whisper.

Sappho patted his knee. "All right, then. Hmm, did I mention she said she was hurt that I accused her of plotting with Potter against me? As if watching her trip over her lies wasn't ample reason to be suspicious. What a twit!" she said. She laughed again, though it came out as more of a quiet snort.

Severus sniggered quietly, leaning his head against Sappho's. "Perhaps I ought to append that to my previous statement?" he asked, grinning. "Gryffindor: the House that caters to the brain damaged, or those brave enough to tell ridiculous bald-faced lies, and stupid enough to be put out when somebody has the temerity to notice." He rolled his eyes then, smirking. "Do you think they assume that just because they are morons, no one else has two wits to rub together, either?"

"Yes, it's so apt!" she laughed. "Does nothing penetrate their thick skulls? But the worst part is, that girl seems to think she's quite intelligent. Well, I'm glad I saw the light before I contacted Papa on her behalf. I'd have died of shame if I told him I'd finally made a friend only to have her turn out to be completely daft. At least I'll never have to worry about that with you. Papa will see you're the bee's knees!" Sappho gave Severus a kiss on the cheek and squeezed him 'round the middle. "I love that you're so much more clever than I am. I don't have to simplify things for you. And if I can't figure something out, I know you will."

He couldn't help grinning in between bites. Something about the constant stream of compliments Sappho paid him was like a drug. Severus thought that he simply couldn't get enough. Or perhaps he just couldn't get enough of her. That seemed a bit more likely. "So, have you told your father about me yet?" he asked, smirking and raising an eyebrow. To be fair, he hadn't told Mam about Sappho yet, either, though he had sent a letter to her that morning, asking a fairly important favour. He had to admit that he'd like to know whether her father thought he was, in fact, the bee's knees, whatever that might mean.

She picked up her teacup to have a sip before answering. "Oh, I told him about you ages ago, after first year. And I owled him after our first date. It was a brief note, though. I should probably pen him a more in-depth one some time. Just I've been preoccupied as of late." Sappho chewed her bottom and lowered her voice. "You don't mind, do you? He's always been on me to chat you up, so I thought I should let him know that I finally did."

"No, I don't mind," Severus answered, shaking his head. Sappho actually looked a little worried that she hadn't asked him first. "I was only curious. You didn't think you needed my permission, did you? Because I wrote to my mother about you this morning, in a manner of speaking, and I make no apologies for that fact, either." Smirking, he leant closer and pecked her cheek. "Though I can't tell you what I said. I'm planning something, and I want it to be a surprise."

Sappho held her hand over her heart, gasping with delight. "A surprise? For me? That's so sweet!" She pecked Severus back and stayed close to his ear. "Actually, I was worried you might mind the fact that Papa's known about me fancying you for so long, as well as some of his people. Well, I only discussed it in any real depth with him and my auntie," she said.

"Yes, for you," Severus answered, still smirking. He could only hope, however, that she still thought his surprise was sweet when actually presented with a badly carved wooden spoon. Though his eyebrow sprang up at the notion of Mr Duncannon's 'people,' Severus shook his head again, still smirking. "No, I don't mind. I only wish I'd known for half as long."

"If I had any inkling you would react as positively as you did, I would have," she trilled in his ear. "And if I had a Time Turner, I'd go back and tell my younger self to chat you up without delay." Sappho gave his earlobe a little kiss before giving the rest of him a tender hug.

Severus shivered a little, involuntarily, at having his earlobe kissed, though he squeezed Sappho back when she cuddled him. He would have to make a point to ask her not to do things to his ears in public, however, for they were quite sensitive, and it was a touch embarrassing.

"What made you think I'd react negatively?" he asked, trying not to sound sullen. But really, everyone seemed to think he was surly with a terrible temper, if not downright evil. And ... well, he could never recall having told Sappho off. It rather hurt to be so isolated because of his reputation, whether it was intentional hyperbole or not.

She raised her hand to softly stroke his chin. "I thought you'd tell me that you were sorry, but you fancied someone else already... That, or you'd never touch someone as ugly as me," she murmured, shrugging a bit. Sappho's eyes moved up and down the length of his face. "I still have trouble believing a man as enchanting as you thinks I'm pretty. I'm used to hearing how hideous I am. Or how my hair, my make-up, my clothes, or the way I carry myself keep me from being as pretty as I could be."

"Well, what do you think I'm used to hearing?" Severus asked quietly, frowning. "Apart from the bit about make-up, it's practically the same thing. Except at least they say you aren't as pretty as you could be. In my case, they conclude I'm must be evil because I'm ugly." Now he could no longer help sounding sullen. It was nice to hear her call him enchanting, of course, but somehow the niceness got buried under an ever-mounting hill of resentment.

Sappho lowered both her hands to her lap. Looking off to the side, she gave a dejected sigh. "I know what it's like to have people assume I'm evil, too. Or at least that my father is. However, my point is that I was afraid of being rejected. I didn't think I was good enough for you. I still don't. How can I be good enough for someone so incredible? Even if no one else thinks you're handsome, I do. And my attraction to you makes me feel timid and weak. It's somewhat paralysing." She suddenly shivered.

"I'm sorry," he said then, scowling at having missed the point of what she was saying, due to his own silly insecurities. But her insecurities were much the same: he'd never told Lily how he felt for fear that she'd laugh in his face. In fact, he hadn't even the nerve to ask Sappho out until after he knew for certain that she would say yes. (Well, ultimately, at any rate. She denied being his secret admirer for a bit after he'd asked her out, but he couldn't fault her for that. He probably would have done the same thing.) "If it's any consolation," he continued, now in a whisper, "I understand. I don't think I'm good enough for you, either. Though knowing you find me so attractive makes me feel confident and strong." He shrugged then and sighed. Was he simply doomed to say everything wrong?

"I'm glad. You are strong. And you have every reason to be confident. I want to make feel that way," she whispered softly. Sappho was looking at him again and this time she appeared more dreamy than sad. She moved in to kiss him. They might get in trouble for snogging at the dinner table, but she felt that Severus needed to be kissed right now.

Though he would have liked nothing better than to kiss her just then, Severus could see Professor McGonagall watching them out of the corner of his eye. He didn't want Sappho to get a detention on his account, so he leant back a little when she moved forward. "Not just now," he whispered, shaking his head. "McGonagall's watching." Frowning, he looked down at her plate and added, more gently, "Are you done? Because I'm not really hungry any longer. I -- ah -- think I'd rather have you all to myself for a few hours, if you're agreeable to the idea." After another quick glance in McGonagall's direction, he risked moving closer. "I want to show you how attractive I find you," he whispered with his lips directly on her ear.

She nodded, blushing. Sappho felt a bit rejected by his moving away from her lips, but his proposal of going off to be alone together put her mind at ease. "Yes, I think I'm full now as well. I'd like get away from all the prying eyes and just be with you. Let's go now. To our special place, perhaps?"

"You read my mind," Severus whispered, smirking. McGonagall wasn't looking just then, so he pecked Sappho's cheek and stood, holding out his hand to help her up.
