UNSANCTIONED CAMPING

UNSANCTIONED CAMPING

This is almost certainly a bad idea, but when faced with the arrival of family members the next day, who doesn't need to relieve a little stress? After curfew, some students slip out to the wooded area between Azurcrest and the sorting cave. There's a scattering of tents, and in the middle a campfire blazes.

The mood isn't as wild as a Grotto party, and most of the entertainment is found in sitting, talking, and drinking. Alcohol is available in reasonable amounts, enough for everyone to have a drink or two (or three if you really need it).

» Around the fire: The forest doesn't have the same warming effect as the Grotto, but it feels very... normal? Just woods and trees and the hoot of an owl. Are you relieved, or do you feel lonely?

» BERTIE BOTT'S EVERY FLAVOUR BEANS: Someone got their hands on a family sized bag of these imported sweets. At first, it's just taken to be candy, but as the truth about these jelly beans is fully understood, it becomes a spectacle.
  • There's a group of students sitting in a circle, passing the bag around. The idea is that you take one, and then everyone waits in anticipation for your reaction. (Let's be real, they're all hoping you get earwax or cigarette ash.) You must then guess what it is before passing the bag to the left.

  • In game terms, this means reply to the root comment, and we will use RNG to pick out a flavor for you. You can then write your character's reaction and attempt to identify what they just put in their mouth.

  • Official results for your random flavor could come from Diego ([info]morale), Sy ([info]stokers), or the mod journal ([info]goosemods).
» The Tents: The magically warmed tents make another appearance. They're filled with pillows and blankets and should be pleasant to sleep in.

» The Morning: In the early hours of the morning, students (hopefully) begin to sneak back to their campgrounds, and (maybe) avoid the eyes of vigilant prefects.

» Did you get in trouble?: If you did, reply here. The punishment will be two nights of detention starting Monday, and a loss of 10 house points per student. Visiting parents will also find out about the indiscretion.

» OOC: Questions, comments & concerns.

Isaiah and Jacob

Isaiah wasn't planning on coming. He truly wasn't. He's been to a number of parties already this year, and at this rate he's going to ruin his reputation as a loner.

And then Jay had asked him if he was going, and said that he was.

And the thing is, Jacob is very, very cute. Among other things.

So despite his best intentions, Isaiah finds himself heading to the camp out and kind of...hanging around, not quite within the light of the campfire but not quite far enough away from it to be skulking (thank you very much,) just trying to see who's around.

He's very subtle, is Isaiah.

Jacob's here because Casey is here. That's not hard to figure out. But he's not entirely sure what possessed him to ask Isaiah if he was coming tonight.

It certainly wasn't because he foresaw Casey almost immediately ditching him to play footsie with Weepy Guitar-Playing Glasses Guy. Though that was not surprising when it happened. And meant that the most familiar faces around were... Stoker and Wainwright. Ugh. He had very possibly not thought this one through well.

But that's why there was alcohol, right? As he retrieves a drink, Jacob glances in the direction that Isaiah is Not-Skulking. A look of recognition passes over his face followed by a confused smile. He hadn't actually expected Isaiah to show up.

...Had he seriously asked an objectively very attractive boy to an event and actually had him show up?

Right. Well. Now's not the time to overthink things. Jacob grabs a second drink and beelines for Isaiah. "Hey. You're here." Poweful observation skills as always with this one. "Which was harder to resist, all the opportunities for skulking or the possibility of being eaten by a bear?"

Oh. There's Jacob, right there. Coming toward him, in fact. Isaiah has a moment to realize that he never actually thought about what to do if the younger boy saw him and came over, and then he's being offered a drink and teased.

It's weirdly nice.

"Definitely the bear," he admits with a little smile as he takes the drink and sips. He wasn't planning on drinking, either, but his plans are all in ruin anyway since they distinctly involved staying in. "Although the prospect of freezing to death before daybreak has some allure as well. Thank you," he adds, lifting the drink a little to dhow what he means.

Jacob lifts his own drink in acknowledgement and returns the smile.

"Freezing to death," He makes a show of considering this, smile growing crooked and nodding his head a little as he continues. "Also a very tempting option to get out of this mess. And probably more likely than the bear." Which is absolutely the only reason he takes a longer sip of his drink and not at all because he needs a boost of confidence now that he's gotten himself into another impulsive entanglement with Isaiah. Who he could easily solve the freezing to death problem with- Nope, not following that train of thought. Another sip of his drink.

"You'd think an entire ocean could keep parents away. But.. wizards." He gestures vaguely with a hint of irritation. "Actually worried about tomorrow or...?" Did you just come to see me? Nope, definitely not drunk enough to ask that.

Isaiah watches Jacob's throat work as he swallows that too - big sip of his drink. Then he catches himself doing it, and looks away quickly, feeling his cheeks warm a little. Oops.

"As I mentioned, I'm more used to having family around than the rest of you," he replies with a shrug and angering sip of his own beverage. "I'm not thrilled about it, but it won't be that bad. Plus having a brother means half the focus is off of me." He looks back at the other boy and smiles dlightly, eyebrows raising in question. "Not a big fan of the idea, then?"

The reminder that Isaiah has a brother throws Jacob off for a moment. Right. Zeke, of course. Someone Jacob actually shares classes with.. and can fairly confidently claim to have known the name of the entire school year. It's just kind of easy to forget the brothers are related when they seem to be nothing alike. But with Isaiah smiling at him, there's really not much room for wandering thoughts about other Covingtons.

The question is a straight forward one, but it's clear from Jacob's face that he considers the answer complicated. "Naw, my dad's, uh, really into Quidditch. And..." He trails off, rubbing the back of his neck before continuing at a nervous pace, "I may have told him there wasn't any Quidditch in America to get out of playing this year? Which sounds really absurd when I admit it outloud." Something he's very much avoided doing up to this point, but Isaiah doesn't exactly ooze 'jock' the way Jacob's roommates do. "But if you'd ever seen me play, you'd know it was for the best." He adds this last bit with a self-deprecating smile.

Isaiah ' s expression, in turn, makes it clear that he considers 'being into Quidditch' a source of bafflement and mystery at best. Still, he's not going to insult anyone's father. He doesn't know Jacob well enough for that, and likely wouldn't if he did, despite the interesting information that the other boy lied to him to get out of sports. "Not so absurd," he says instead, a little gentle, a little encouraging. "My father has encouraged me to do a number of things I'm entirely encapable of. If the opportunity to lie to get out of them came up, I'd have taken it, no question."

Someone else who doesn't live and breathe Quidditch? It feels like a rarity at this school and a short, quiet laugh escapes Jacob's lips. "Yeah?" He's uncertain whether to believe Isaiah or not, but the sentiment is nice. It causes him to smile and lean in conspiratorally close, bumping his shoulder against Isaiah's lightly. "You got a solution that's maybe not as dramatic as lying and moving overseas? I'm pretty sure he's not gonna miss that there's a Quidditch pitch right by our campsite."

"Traditionally, mine has been hiding til he gets tired of looking for me," Isaiah offers, his smile going wry and self-deprecating. It's not an answer calculated to impress an attractive young man, but what can you do? It's the truth. "I don't know how well that will work for you, but you're welcome to hide out in the Ribbonfin senior cabin. He probably won't think of looking there."

It may not be the most impressive admission, but Jacob reacts to it warmly. Which probably isn't surprising considering how much these two bond over being socially awkward. "I'm definitely not too proud to consider hiding an option," he replies, looking more amused than embarassed by this. "I usually stick to the library but surprisingly Stoker actually does know where that is."

A pause then, as Jacob becomes a little more serious, considering Isaiah's offer. "But, uh. Thanks. I might take you up on that." His eyes are very firmly focused on his drink when he says this. "You're, uh, welcome too. At Coppertale. But I don't recommend it."

Isaiah laughs, surprised. "Hey, now. Not all Coppertales are so intimidating. A few of them are actually very likable."

He's looking at Jacob when he says this, though he catches himself and looks away quickly, back at his own drink. Which he takes a liberal sip from, because wow. If he's going to awkwardly flirt (maybe?) with a guy he only sort-of knows, he needs some liquid courage.

Jacob may be inexperienced at this whole flirting-kissing-whatever-thing, but it does not escape his notice that Isaiah is probably talking about him. He snorts softly and does a rather terrible job of suppressing a pleased little smile. He's become weirdly fond of this guy he'd never have talked to if not for those pesky freshmen. "Yeah? I find they're an acquired taste."

Isaiah glances back up in just enough time to catch the tail-end of that unsuppressed smile. It's nice. He wants to see it again. Maybe there's some Amortentia still lingering in his system.

Probably not.

"Perhaps," he says thoughtfully, still looking sideways at Jacob over the rim of his drink, "but I think I'm...acquiring it." Wow. Did that sound as bad to Jacob as it did to him once he said it? Isaiah snorts at himself, shaking his head. "Sorry. I'm not great at this."

Lucky for Isaiah, neither of them are smooth dudes and Jacob has fully accepted this. But the implication of 'this' does embolden Jacob a little and he looks back at Isaiah with his best cocky Coppertale smirk. (It could use some work.)

"It's cool." He gestures to the tents as he continues, aware of their far-too-intimate nature, but he doubts either of them intends to spend the night on the forest floor. "Do you wanna go somewhere quieter and talk or whatever?" ...Okay, probably just talk, but maybe whatever.

"That would be good," Isaiah agrees, relieved. Given the option, he'll always opt for 'quieter.' "Do you think the tents are claimed, or forst come first serve?"

Only one way to find out. He starts to turn away to go over, and then- emboldened by the drink, or how out-of-character all of this is for him, or just the smirk Jacob is giving him- reaches to grab the other boy's hand.

The smirk only gets worse when Jacob feels Isaiah take his hand and he steps in to follow him. He'd thought Isaiah might excuse himself at the prospect of the tents, so this is quite a surprise. A nice one.

"If they're all taken, just look for one with freshmen in it," he offers, leaning in unnecessarily close. "Pretty sure I can at least intimidate some freshmen."

(Wanna get this wrapped up and we can figure out anything that needs figured out over email? :D)

Isaiah laughs again, unexpected and unexpectedly fond. "My hero," he offers, a little irony in his tone along with the laughter. He's making fun of both of them, together, and it's oddly nice. "Let's see what we can do."
