UNSANCTIONED CAMPING

UNSANCTIONED CAMPING

This is almost certainly a bad idea, but when faced with the arrival of family members the next day, who doesn't need to relieve a little stress? After curfew, some students slip out to the wooded area between Azurcrest and the sorting cave. There's a scattering of tents, and in the middle a campfire blazes.

The mood isn't as wild as a Grotto party, and most of the entertainment is found in sitting, talking, and drinking. Alcohol is available in reasonable amounts, enough for everyone to have a drink or two (or three if you really need it).

Ā» Around the fire: The forest doesn't have the same warming effect as the Grotto, but it feels very... normal? Just woods and trees and the hoot of an owl. Are you relieved, or do you feel lonely?

Ā» BERTIE BOTT'S EVERY FLAVOUR BEANS: Someone got their hands on a family sized bag of these imported sweets. At first, it's just taken to be candy, but as the truth about these jelly beans is fully understood, it becomes a spectacle.
  • There's a group of students sitting in a circle, passing the bag around. The idea is that you take one, and then everyone waits in anticipation for your reaction. (Let's be real, they're all hoping you get earwax or cigarette ash.) You must then guess what it is before passing the bag to the left.

  • In game terms, this means reply to the root comment, and we will use RNG to pick out a flavor for you. You can then write your character's reaction and attempt to identify what they just put in their mouth.

  • Official results for your random flavor could come from Diego ([info]morale), Sy ([info]stokers), or the mod journal ([info]goosemods).
Ā» The Tents: The magically warmed tents make another appearance. They're filled with pillows and blankets and should be pleasant to sleep in.

Ā» The Morning: In the early hours of the morning, students (hopefully) begin to sneak back to their campgrounds, and (maybe) avoid the eyes of vigilant prefects.

Ā» Did you get in trouble?: If you did, reply here. The punishment will be two nights of detention starting Monday, and a loss of 10 house points per student. Visiting parents will also find out about the indiscretion.

Ā» OOC: Questions, comments & concerns.

Rosy is not here to ruin the party for everyone. Biggest Buzzkill in School is not a title she feels like claiming right now. She’ll settle for Biggest Buzzkill in Ribbonfin, though, because she is here to ruin the party for any unfortunate roommate of hers that thought they could sneak past her. Come on guy(s), she hasn’t gone to sleep before 3:00 AM all week, you really think she didn’t hear you slip out and never return? You really think she didn’t already hear about this stupid camping party from a certain freshman (it's Braydyn, it's obviously Braydyn) who might not be everyone’s favorite but sure as hell knows the right people to suck up to?

So Rosy finds her way to the illegal camping trip thanks to a tip from her new favorite snitch, determined to take anyone under her supervision and drag them back to their campsite, because the day her parents come to school is not the day they also find any of her girls half-eaten by bears or ghosts or ghost bears in the woods.

But the Ribbonfin junior girls might be in luck today. Or they’re just reaping the benefits of someone else’s bad luck. Because Rosy finds the fire and the tents and the group of kids shoving mystery candy in their mouths, and before she sees a single one of her girls, she spots someone she honestly should have expected, but who she really didn’t expect to see there. Someone big, dumb, and related to her.

And the look on her face goes from annoyed to deadly. The grinding of her teeth can probably be heard over the laughter of the others gathered around the campfire. If these two have any kind of weirdo twin senses at all, Sy can probably feel some amorphous ball of anger coming in his direction. If he’s smart, he’ll take cover. ... Sy is rarely smart.

ā€œSylvester Orfeo Stoker,ā€ Rosy hisses at the back of his head, in a voice that is eerily similar to their mother’s. ā€œWhat the fuck?ā€

The hairs stand up on the back of Sy's neck. Or maybe it's just the fact that he hears his mother's voice coming from behind him while he's drunk in the woods. He's not sober enough to figure out if PTC somehow started early, or wonder why the hell his mother, who never goes out the door in anything but expensive French stilettos, would be walking around the woods at this hour. Oh god, he's fucked up. Oh god, he's getting the belt when Dad hears about this.

Thankfully, that ice-cold jolt of fear only lasts until he twists around and sees Rosy standing behind him. "Fuckin' shit," Sy says, sounding more relieved than annoyed, because he's an idiot and doesn't realize when he's in trouble. "I just thought you were... Never mind who I thought you were. Dude, did you just middle name me?"

Oh Sy, you absolute idiot. Rosy is actually thrown off by the fact that Sy immediately sounds relieved. Does he not realize what he's doing is against the rules, or does he think that because she's gone to two whole parties now Rosy is a chill, fun prefect?

Because she's not. She really, really is not.

And it kind of just pisses her off a little more.

"I sure as fuck did," she snaps, and her jaw is clenched so hard her teeth are probably going to just crumble into dust soon. "What in the hell do you think you're doing out here?"

"Dude. Calm down," Sy answers, which is probably the wrong thing to say. Despite his words, he's already standing up, his shoulders moving to exactly echo Rosy's combative stance.

Because the thing about being a Stoker is, no matter what state you're in, you can tell when someone else wants a fight. And you're always ready for a fight.

"I'm camping, Ro. I'm trying to enjoy the last fuckin' hours I'm gonna enjoy anything at this goddamn school." He gestures around them with the bottle in his hand, at everyone else who's trying to get some relief before the shitshow that's going to be their families coming here. "What the fuck is your problem?"

Calm down. Calm down? Did he just tell her to calm down? Because that was absolutely the wrong thing to say. Rosy hadn't been able to calm down in god knows how long, and especially not since they'd announced PTC.

"Pretty sure my problem here is you, dude." Sy might have seven inches on Rosy, he might outweigh her by a fair amount, he might be physically a hell of a lot stronger than her, he might scare the crap out of her roommates, but when he gets up and matches her stance, she's glad to see it. Because this is the only way these two know how to solve a problem. "Are you just giving up, is that it? Was living like me for, like, ten whole days too much for you?"

Sy rolls his eyes. "What the fuck difference does it make now? You think they're gonna be moved at all if I stay in my cabin all night, studying for Transfig? They don't care! They're going to do whatever the shit they want with us, like they always do."

He sounds bitter, even as he knows Rosy isn't wrong either. Is Sy really all hot air, and not strong enough to fight a hopeless fight? Is Sy really that weak, to have given up with only a few hours to go, just because he's so goddamn tired of trying to be the son they want him to be? Rosy's only ever asked for one thing of him. One small fucking thing. Don't leave me.

But maybe, for all their terrible similarities, that's the core difference between them. The belief that Sy can be better than he is.

"Guess we'll never fucking know if you just quit at the last goddamn minute." Rosy's not just mad. She's terrified. She's scared of being alone. Of Sy going back to LA without her, then running off like he always did and doing something dumb and getting killed, or arrested, or their parents shipping him off to another school and not letting her see him again.

And she feels like an idiot. Because she thought Sy was just as scared of being alone as she was. She thought he would rather go down fighting so they could stay together than give up before he gets beaten. But if he was willing to give up so easily, he couldn't be that scared. Maybe he even wanted to get away from his uptight, nagging twin, who was always hovering, always reminding him of what he wasn't.

Rosy takes a deep breath and lowers her voice. She's trying to sound less angry and unstable. Instead, it sounds like ice. "Did you ever even try, or were you just lying about that to get me off your back?"

Sy's eyes narrow at the accusation. He hates when Rosy's voice does that, because he's never had her self-control. Because it sounds just like their mother and father, how they can lower their voice and still smile through gritted teeth, squeezing his arm where no one can see and telling him to cut it out. Behave yourself. Stop trying to shame us.

(Afterwards, he and Rosy would silently look at each other. And he'd wonder if she was tallying the score, recalculating her odds at becoming Favourite Twin this month; or if she was angry at him for always messing up when she was always good; or if she was jealous of him for still having the will to not listen.

But mostly, he'd see, from the look in her eyes, that she knew how much he hated all of this, because she hated it too.)

"Of course I fuckin' tried!" Sy isn't as good at being quiet, but he tries, his words coming out in a furious whisper as he takes a step towards her. "But who the fuck could live up to your standards? Who the fuck could live like you? You've been driving everyone around you crazy, trying to make things perfect, when it doesn't fuckin' matter!"

It's a low blow. He knows it's a low blow the second it leaves his mouth, but he's angry, and he always makes bad decisions when he's angry.

Like so: "The more I try, the more they want out of me," he says, and now his voice sounds like ice too. "Maybe I just wanted a goddamn break from fighting all the time." Sy turns, and walks away from her.

Ow.

That… ow. That hurt. Rosy had always had faith in Sy, she had always believed that he could do everything she could do (and do it better, even) if he only tried. It was the foundation of the first fourteen years of their relationship.

But maybe she actually was expecting too much. From him. From her roommates. From herself. Her parents had always expected her to be a perfect lady, a star athlete, a chess master, valedictorian, prefect, class president, team captain, teacher’s pet, literally anything that involved a trophy and bragging rights. They had always expected too much from her, because you couldn’t win if you shot for second place. And she’d tried not to project those same expectations on those around her. She thought that if she thanked people for their hard work and cheered them on regardless of the result and offered to help or did the grunt work for them, then maybe she could counteract that shitty energy. If she just did the exact opposite of what her parents did, if she supported people instead of tearing them down, if she believed in them instead of challenging them, then she could achieve the same end but without all of the bullshit baggage she and Sy carried with them on a daily basis.

Clearly, it wasn’t working.

Clearly, she was just as bad as her parents. She didn’t know what to do. When she tried to clean, she was invading someone’s privacy. When she tried to enforce the rules, she made people cry. When she tried to believe in them, she was basically throwing her baggage over their shoulders and asking them to take that off her back for a couple hours because she needed a break.

Clearly, no matter how many miles there were between them and the Stoker household, she and Sy were just going to turn into their parents, and for once Rosy didn’t know if she had the energy to fight that.

Watching Sy’s retreating back, Rosy wants to say something. She doesn’t know what—she wants to hurt him, get a parting blow, get the last goddamn word, but she also wants him to come back. What if this is foreshadowing? What if this is what pushes him to do something to get himself caught when everyone else manages to quietly sneak back into their cabins tomorrow morning? What if, in the end, she was his downfall, because she couldn’t let him handle his own damn life?

ā€œFine,ā€ she mutters, mostly to herself, clenching her fists and digging her nails into the palm of her hand until they leave divots in the skin. If he’s tired of fighting, so is she. ā€œFucking fine.ā€ She turns around and, almost completely forgetting she came there for someone other than her brother, walks away too.

They're either gonna explosively break up at some point - probably via fist fight - or accidentally get married because they just don't bring up issues they have

Or just stop dating one day without mentioning it to each other
