Our Lady of the Foxes

The biwa echoes
announcing the full moon's rise,
kitsune magic,
foxy laughter in their eyes
like lanterns dancing.

She calls them to her,
she knows them, each one by name,
each of their stories,
each truth and outrageous claim
as they come boasting.

And now the music
that she makes for them tonight
beneath the full moon
tells them that all things are right
with her soft singing.
