Molly had always known deep down that Gabe would slip. It was a solace thing for him and while she hated it, she accepted that it was part of him as much as she was, as much as sex or drinking or any of his other bad habits. She ran a hand through her hair before she locked up and touched the doorframe to activate the protective ward on her home. Their home, really, but she wasn’t sure how long he would stay this time. It was always difficult for them, though they always came back to each other in the end. He was hers to protect and look after, and so she had moved him in, knowing that the risk of relapse was rising in him - she could feel the tension. She sighed and walked back to his room, seating herself by the bed where he was and picking up the needle he had last used, turning it in her fingers. A thought and she could freeze it, shatter it, but it wouldn’t do any more good than locking him in. It was all temporary and she knew it very well.
There was always a touch of cold, like someone opened a door, when Molly came in how. Even as high as he was he felt it. He opened dark eyes knowing they at least would not betray his state. "I called out at work." If she was here to wake him for his shift at the bar.
“I know.” Molly raised a brow slightly, still turning the needle in her hands. It was such a small thing, really. She could not understand the attraction, even if she could feel the relaxation it brought to him. She set it down after a few moments, a small frown on her face. “Are you feeling ill?” She knew the answer but it was polite obviously to ask since he had mentioned calling out.
"Stomach bug maybe. I got sick earlier." They both knew he was telling half-truths. He had thrown up, but not from a stomach bug. "Headcold maybe." It would justify the runny nose. Illness would account for the dark circles under his eyes - though lack of sleep often did that too, and he hadn't gotten much of that lately. The end of the year was always hard for him as Death decided he needed a full recap of the year, and visions of the Deaths coming the next year.
Molly nodded slightly. He knew she didn’t believe him. She wasn’t stupid, and she stroked his hair back from his face. “Yeah, it’s the season for things like that I figure. Weather changes and all.” She lightly touched the point of the needle - not enough to prick but enough to make him well aware that she knew what he really was sick from. “Do you want something to eat or drink?”
Gabe shook his head. The idea of food right now was not a good thought. "I have tea. I think. On the bedside." He lay back into the pillow. "I just need some sleep is all."
Molly crawled into the bed next to him, running her hand through his hair lightly. She wanted him to feel better, and she knew he liked having his hair stroked. She kissed his forehead lightly and ran her hand over his eyes, allowing them to close before she cuddled closer, settling in for a night of wakefulness.
He got up a couple hours of drug-induced sleep in before the terror woke him again. He got up in a rush to get sick in the bathroom and lay with his head against the porcelain a moment. He needed more… so he could sleep. It would be harder with Molly in his bed. Everything he needed was near his bed.
Molly did stir when he got up to run to the bathroom, but she knew that he would not want her to follow. He would be sick and he wouldn’t want her to see it. It hurt a little bit but she knew he wanted to be strong with her around in whatever way he could. The drugs were more important than anything else to him in most ways, and while she accepted it, she could not say it didn’t sting a little.
Gabe started to get back up, but his arms and legs were heavy and he was sweating. Molly, even with her new Winter Lady thing, was still hot. The floor would work. The tile was cool and felt good.
Molly could feel his heat, the discomfort, and roused herself enough to send a chill breeze to the other room for him. It would stay, keeping the room cool and as comfortable as she could make it, though she dozed again quickly. She could feel him, and that was what mattered.
========================================
Gabe was used to disorientation when he woke up after using. He wasn't entirely surprised to wake up on the floor either. Well, ground. He didn't recognize the place, but wasn't disturbed by that. Drug users got used to waking in strange places. He didn't feel the craving, though he clearly felt the symptoms of detox settling in. And apparently he was hallucinating, because there was a beaked cat poking it's head out of a basketball-sized egg. He rubbed at his arm.
Arundel. You are Gabriel Corvin Turner. You have a long name. I am just Arundel. Gabe rubbed at his eyes. "Gabe is fine." He had officially gone crazy. Oddly it wasn't as disturbing as he had expected it to be. It felt nice honestly, like the way he sometimes felt with Molly. Connected. It was odd that he felt connected when withdrawal usually left him feeling disconnected.
Molly too woke up alone, though she had partly expected it. The problem was she was not in her bed, nor in Gabe’s. She bolted upright and looked around, her eyes finally fixing, entranced, on the egg by the bedside. It was cracking, and she could feel the creature inside already. It was a little odd for her to feel something this strongly, but she moved to the side of the egg, touching it just lightly, though it soon opened fully under her palm and a pale blue and white winged kitten was sitting before her, the feelings of the small creature intensified by the fact that it was free- and happy to be so. She couldn’t help scooping it up and hugging it, getting a distinct displeased feeling from the creature.
“Sorry, sorry,” she murmured, feeling strange for a moment talking to a cat. The answer though, words in her head, shocked her a bit. “Margaret, called Molly. Fae Queen. I am Anu.” Molly blinked for a moment and nodded her head. She felt uncertain and unbalanced, and she glanced around in confusion before stroking the kitten’s fur, drawing now a feeling of pleasure as she walked out of the room, and then the house. Gabe had to be here somewhere- though perhaps Mab had pulled her away for a mission? “Mab? Gabe? Harry? Anyone?”
Gabe looked around trying to remember where he was. He didn't. He was outside, his back to a small building. There were Shadows everywhere. Death hung in the air. He'd never Seen anything like it. It was like the entire world was dying. Had he died? Was this what Death was like? I'm not dead. Arundel murmured in his mind. It didn't mean however that Gabe wasn't.
Molly finally felt something different from Anu and her own fear. Gabe was nearby. He had a feel she would know anywhere, and he was afraid, or confused maybe. She ran toward the feeling, the kitten- who she had finally set down- running after her, and she threw herself on him, holding him tightly. This was a place she didn’t know, and she could feel it was somehow wrong. She didn’t like it. It almost felt like Chichen Itza. A place that held so much pain and darkness it practically should not exist.
Gabe turned at the sound of footsteps, prepared for… who was he kidding, he wasn't prepared for anything. There was light though - the dawn light of winter that accompanied Molly. "So I'm not dead?"
Molly shook her head, clinging to him for a moment before stepping back to look him over, clearly concerned. “You didn’t take enough to kill you. I was there, I stayed to make sure you were safe and… not alone.” She hated the thought of him alone, honestly.
"I've never been alone." There was always Death. And Molly and now Arundel.
“I know,” she murmured softly, touching his cheeks and testing his temperature. She knew that he was warmer than her, and she could tell he was warmer than usual even. It took a bit more to focus her magic and she was a little uncertain about that, though her small cat told her ”It will work, just not as well here, or as easily.” That was slightly uncomfortable, but she held her focus to try and cool him a bit. “Come. We should get you inside.”
Gabe struggled to his feet, his entire body aching. There was something on the ground… he picked it up not wanting to leave it. "I just need to sleep, Molls." It helped the detoxing.
“Inside. Not out here.” Molly helped him rise, offering the support her small frame could provide. She was stronger than she looked and more than willing to use that strength when he needed her. She guided him to the room she had found herself in, settling him on the bed and stroking back his hair gently. “I will be here when you wake.” She would get water for them and try to find food for the animals in the meanwhile.
