Despite the awkwardness that their relationship had fallen into thanks to the most ridiculous past couple of months James had ever experienced, he was determined to make things work with Bobby. They had been together for a year now, which was a lifetime in James-years, and James had even awkwardly blurted out the 'L-word' ages before he thought it was even possible. They had been friends for ages, and she knew him better than anyone else did and up until recently, he'd like to think it went both ways.
Still, her faltered trust, knowing that someone or something was making her see things, hearing that she wanted to buy a gun, had put a strain on things. It was palpable, painful at times, but James was pushing through. Wasn't it Churchill that said 'When you're going through hell, keep going'?
He had fought like hell to save this relationship, yanked it back from the brink, and he was going to fix it if it killed him.
Dinner had been easy-going enough. James liked to think things were getting less tense. Definitely less tense. Yeah. He eased his salad plate aside and turned to his girlfriend. "I'm going to go to the bathroom, okay? Be right back." He pressed a kiss to her cheek and disappeared to the back, giving a brief acknowledgement to the busboy as he side stepped him.
