November 1, 2009
The Wizengamot judge had announced that a plea bargin had been arranged between the public defender and the defendant, Candace Montague. Initially charged with aggravated assault, arson, attempted robbery, and a breach of the International Magical Statute of Secrecy - she would be returning what she stole and listing the three individuals who assisted in the heist to steal the crown jewels in August 2008. She'd be sentenced for 6 months in prison for her cooperation in the heist. A drastic decrease from the original 10 years. "I thought you said you could get her acquitted," Graham Montague demanded of his friend as they exited the court room. "I could have... if she hadn't decided to take matters into her own hands," Adrian Pucey noted. "Surely, there's something you could do!" "Graham, mate, she made the deal without me there - she blind sided me ... again." "She just doesn't like being told what to do... even if it's in her own best interests," the woman's brother pleaded, "She can't go to prison." "Well, she didn't trust me to do my job," Adrian noted with a shrug, "And, honestly, I have a feeling she just did that to fuck with me anyway." "What?" "Oh come on, Candace has never minded jail time - she thrives there, you know that," Adrian finally stopped walking to face the other man. "Besides, she hated that I was 5 for 5... She's a vindictive little bitch, you know it. I know it. Everyone in that courtroom knows it." "With the new DWP ACT, I could lose my job, Adrian," Graham finally revealed his nerves for the verdict. "Doubtful," Adrian rolled his eyes, "If you were going to lose your job because of your sister - you would have lost it a long time ago." "You don't understand," Graham offered a tone of concern in his voice, "This fucked law... it's going to change everything for a lot of people. Guilt before proven innocent is a real thing now." "Graham," Adrian placed a consoling hand on his friends shoulder, "You're overreacting. You'll be fine. We'll all be fine. We might have to squeeze in another meeting here and there - but they're not going to fire you. You're top of your department, right?" "Not the bottom, at least." "Look... if you're that concerned, just start kissing people's asses... They won't boot ya if they like ya." Graham, defeated, looked at his shoes. Just as he did so Candace Montague's arresting officers, Sullivan Fawley and Gemma Farley, passed and Adrian nodded to them in greeting. Graham avoided eye contact with them. "I need a drink," Graham finally spoke. "Same," Adrian offered as he rested his arm on his friend's shoulders, "Lets call the boys and drink away our defeat, yeah? It'll be fun." |
