WHO: Zeal Camber (D6).
WHAT: Nomnomnom.
WHERE: Southeast, heading north.
WHEN: Day 13.
STATUS: Complete.
WARNINGS: Hunger Games, squirrel murder??
He hadn't stayed more than a day at the shore. As much opportunity as it offered for food (at least enough to keep him going through the night) there was just as much potential for danger. For a tribute who couldn't swim, staying much longer in such an exposed place was foolishness, to the point of idiocy. He had packed up and started moving before the sun rose, though it was high now above his head. The boy from Six's main concern now was discretion. Caution. The pool had narrowed, if his count was accurate, to only eight: and it was hard not to hope. It was hard not to believe that he was strong enough. It was hard to keep concentrated on the days, maybe even weeks, they had left in the arena instead of what might come after. But at least he must have been more practiced at moving quietly than he thought, for when Zeal rounded the next tree, there was a small, brown furry animal staring back at him. For only a split second, the two of them gawked at one another, equally surprised to see the opposite life form. Frozen in time, Zeal by the fact that he couldn't believe he was actually facing—what was it called, he'd seen one in training. The squirrel likely by the presence of a predator. And for good reason. In a flash, fueled on by his practice with the fish and the sheer disbelief (and excitement, with his belly rumbling, the whole of his body slimmed by days and days in the arena) that he might have a meal, the boy from Six had his spear up and in the air in the same moment the squirrel scattered, heading up the trunk. It was as much luck as it was anything that the spear, when he threw it, pinned the animal exactly where it was. The weapon itself stood, quivering, tip embedded in the tree, as the animal died, and to himself—only to himself—he quietly sent a thank you to the last living thing he'd killed with that same spear. For giving him the tools to get here. For— "I'm going to see that sunrise," he grunted out, in the same moment he moved to retrieve his weapon. And his dinner. |
