Severus lay on the floor of the Shrieking Shack, his life’s blood flowing from the terrible wounds in his neck despite his futile attempts to staunch it, Nagini’s venom burning through his veins. Beyond the pain, all he could feel was a deep sense of frustration and anger that he was going to fail at his final and most important task. He felt no sense of betrayal at the Dark Lord’s actions. Why would he? Betrayal implied that first there was loyalty. He’d held no loyalty towards the Dark Lord for years and he knew that the Dark Lord was loyal only to himself.
But then Potter appeared, looming over him. Severus had no idea why he was here or how he’d gotten here. He had one last chance to see this thing done and he was going to take it. He summoned up what remained of his strength and grabbed the front of Potter’s robes, pulling him close.
He concentrated hard and silvery memories began to pour from him. He couldn’t control it well and some memories he would rather have kept escaped. There was nothing he could do. The important memories were among them and that was all that mattered now.
'Take... it... Take... it...'
He could feel death approaching on swift wings and his grip tightened on the boy’s robes. He wasn’t sure what he wanted. To explain? To ask for understanding? To hope that Potter could, for once, see beyond the surface? To apologise to the girl who had once had eyes so similar to the ones looking at him now?
'Look... at... me' he whispered.
Then death claimed him and his black eyes went blank and his grip loosened and he knew no more.
Until he suddenly stumbled out of a blue fire and went to his knees on a carpeted floor, clutching at his bleeding throat. Confusion swirled through him but he barely had time for it. He was bleeding profusely from the savage wounds Nagini had left though... he felt no effects of the poison. He frowned and tried to rise but could only collapse to the floor. He’d been dying... he’d died... he knew that. What was happening? Was the price of his mistakes in life to be cursed to die endlessly?
He managed to turn over and saw two figures standing over him. He looked at the one who seemed familiar and the man’s face came into focus. It was different in some ways but he recognised it.
"Potter," he choked, one hand clutching at the wounds on his neck. "Knew... I’d... end up... in Hell."
