Just a... suggestion... but maybe you shouldn't display the "shit list" so prominently on the sidebar like that. It gives the community page a bit of a negative vibe, when we could really use a friending community like this around :) It might be a turnoff for some people. A simple "play nice, repeat offenders will be banned" usually suffices.

I was worried about that. Well, mostly about the name "shit list" for the list of not-so-nice persons. On the other hand, I was trying to make all facets of the community easily accessible--even the negative ones. I'll work on it.

Yeah, I think it might be a bit overkill, especially since it uses profanity (which not everyone likes to see, even if they are adults). If you had a bout of major wank and drama over some people causing trouble, I could understand, but right now I think your focus on "YOU WILL END UP ON THE SHIT LIST / HERE LOOK AT EVERYONE ON THE SHIT LIST SO FAR!" is a turnoff...

(Sorry for reposting this comment...There was a typo in some html in and it's just easier to go back and fix it.)

I was going for something a little different with using "shit list," instead of "list of members who have broken the rules and been punished for it and the minium details thereof." If you have a better name, let me know.

As you can see, it's off the links list now. It's still on the page summary, of course, because there haven't been enough entires since to move it down the page.

I'm not focused on the shit list. I'm focused on keeping people from being rude. Wank happens; it's a part of fandom. If we set up rules to punish the people who instigate it, it'll be less likely to happen (I mean, that's why there are laws right? And, of course, to punish offenders and maintain order). I don't think I'm wrong in letting people know there are going to be consequences for rudeness.

This is community where a wide range of interests is (hopefully) going to be displayed, and not everyone is tolerant of opposing viewpoints--we wouldn't have wank and shipwars and the like if all people were nice and tolerant of others. I want to try to make sure no one is offended, and, if someone is offended, I want them to know it won't go unpunished. And, so far, nothing like that has happened.

The reason I wanted the shit list easily accessible was because the shit list also includes information on when a shit-listing is going to be lifted. (Check here for the specifics.) I think people should have access to that in order know when their probation is up. It's only fair to give them that knowledge. I wasn't trying to be all obnoxious and wanky with it.

And, I'm not trying to be rude, but did you read through the rules of the comm before joining? Because it explains what the shit list is and what sort of behaviors warrant being put on it.

No worries!

Yeah, I did read the rules which is part of the reason I brought it up -- there seemed to be a lot of focus on it (i.e. one criteria for being on the "shit list" is breaking the rules, but only two of the rules can actually be broken). I'm not saying it's bad to be diligent about keeping an eye on and potentially banning troublesome members (hell, I've owned my fair share of large communities), I just thought it might create a bit more positive vibe for the community if it wasn't featured so prominently, you know?

Anyway, just my $.02 for the suggestion box :)

Oh, ok. Well, I guess my reasoning there is to avoid confusion should anyone get shit-listed (seriously, do you have any ideas for a less offensive, but creative name for it?) as to why they were shit-listed. I suppose I could just make a mention of it and then explain the full details of it in the post for the shit list itself. Does that sound good? I'm asking because you've raised a lot of valid points--valid points I was already worried about.

Also, I know it's off topic and silly, but I'm kind of excited to get some feedback from the members. (I'm so weird sometimes.)

Hehe... um, not offhand but I'll think about it ;D Maybe you could just call it a "strike list" for now, and explain that because you *hope* it will be a high-traffic community, you'd like for everyone to follow the other rules of 1) be nice, and 2) not repost friending topics that have already done and pay attention to the memories/tags/etc. whichever are being used. Also, as per the latter -- to solve this problem, maybe you could just set the comm on moderated status? That way any duplicate memes could just be rejected outright and it wouldn't even be a problem (since this seems to be less of a real drama problem than trolling or being offensive, it might be better than just striking people outright, IMO). Also, can you think of any other /actual/ rules you might be able to add? Then maybe the others could be put under "guidelines" or something... (Cause like I said in the previous comment, only 2 of the 5 can technically be broken.)

Feedback is always great! Especially with yesterday's events, and [info]squeaky saying that there's already been an influx of new users... friending memes are something that's going to be pretty necessary in the near future! :)

There used to be three rules that were breakable, but the third had to be eliminated as, apparently, only the mod can tag entries.

I'm hesitant to make posting moderated--mostly because I don't want to do anything to delay the friending. And because I don't want to seem too tyrannical.

I like your suggestions, though. *goes off to rethink and revise*

Hmm, you might want to check the settings on that -- I know on LJ you can set it to either "only mods can add tags" or "users can add tags". That said, you could set up a post for "Tag requests" or set up a bunch of tags initially for popular fandoms and hope people fill them out?

That makes sense, re: moderation (it was just a thought).

NP :) I'm off to class now though, so I'll TTYL :)

Hi [info]brimac13, I went ahead and posted a meme and am unsure how to add/create new tags for it. It is Fandom: Stargate SG-1, Friending Topic: Stargate SG-1

For some odd reason, IJ only lets mods do the tagging. So, don't worry about the tags; I'll take care of it.

[info]gatewaygirl and I have set up a new Harry/MWPP community. Is it okay to post here about it, essentially promoting it, or is this community meant only for personal IJs?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]brimac13
2008-02-03 12:41 pm UTC (link)
This really isn't a promo asylum for personal IJs or asylums.

However, if you want to set up a friending meme for fans of Harry/MWPP and mention your asylum in the post, that would be totally kosher. (Just read the rules in the asylum info before you do...)

If you're solely interested in promoting your asylum, try [info]asylum_promo or [info]promote. Also, if you want to get the word out about your asylum, though not necessarily promoting it, you can get it listed in the [info]hp_index.

Hope I've been helpful.

I don't think I'm interested in doing a friending meme at this point, so I'll concentrate on the promo communities. Thank you for for the links to them, by the way!

Here via [info]ms_treesap

I'm using this first to say that I love what this comm does, and how organized you made it!

All the info on the profile -- and here in this post too -- is really helpful for the users. Also, since a friend of mine wants to start some comms (and I know zip about running one), it's really brilliant to see a great model for how to make the goals and procedures clear...

I LOVE that you made it for non-fandom friending, too. (KNITTING FTW! *beams at nearly-finished first pair of socks*) I guess I need to post a knitting meme although I'm not sure why, since I don't know any knitting asylums on IJ. Maybe I would find out!

Could you tell me what your site layout scheme is - the green and all? I really like how calm and easy it is. Maybe put that in the user-info in case other people trying to avoid IJ's *cough*ugly*cough defaults want to use it.

Also, I'm unclear about whether everyone just does the meme here, or do they ever post it on their own ij, too? (Not sure how that would work (it may be too early in the morning for clear thinking, lol) but do you have any ideas on that?

Now, off to do the snarry meme, and tell my flist about this comm!

Wow! I'm so glad that you like the way I've organized this. I tried to make everything as easily accessible as possible. :D

That's a good idea about the layout. It's a S2 layout called "Opal (Libra OSWD)", and the color scheme (referred to as "theme" by the layout gods customization area) is called "Natural Forest".

As to the memes, they're posted here and pimped out elsewhere (anywhere elsewhere).

If you post the knitting meme, it'll be our first non-fandom meme! I'm excited!
