Kingsley on Diagon
Who: Kingsley Shacklebolt and Bill Strout
Where: Diagon Alley
When: late afternoon
Rating/warnings: Likely just PG

Shopping was not really something Kingsley relished, but some times it had to be done. He needed clothes after all, and with the weather going towards spring, he needed something lighter than the heavy woolen cloak he'd been wearing all winter.

Gladrags was the obvious choice, even if there were a couple of other good cloak and robe makers in Britain. But Gladrags had his measurements and that certainly made things easier, and one less thing to bother with.

Kingsley was in no real hurry however and strolled slowly up Diagon Alley towards Gladrags, idly looking at windows and nodding at a few people he knew.

Bill knew the big black guy from work, but bein' that they was in different departments and all, he'd never really talked to him. But, Bill found that he needed to 'cause ain't no one else was seemingly interest in nothin' he was tryin' t'do t'catch this killer who'd taken this bird's life.

He thought about hollering for him, but then decided it was a better idea t'be a bit more quiet than that. So, after purchasin' his ingredients, he fell into step beside the tall man.

"Bloody well hot out today, ain't it?" he asked in his thick Scottish accent, just a bit of small talk so he didn't look too stupid. Really, it wasn't that hot.

Kingsley looked to the side, and slightly down, at the man who had suddenly fallen into step next to him, speaking with an obvious Scottish accent. He instantly recognised him from the Ministry. Strout... William. Related to the Blacks. One of the Medical departments.

"Compared to winter, quite hot yes." Kingsley replied with a tiny smile, wondering why Strout had approached him like that, here. "What brings you to Diagon, Strout?" He asked kindly, looking forward again.

"Ingredients fer the pain potions I use," he answered, not especially concerned with the weather at all.

"Yerself?" he returned.

Kingsley arched an eyebrow lightly at the mention of Strout using pain potions. "I see. I'm shopping for a lighter summer cloak. Now that it's so hot." He cast a small amused smirk at Strout, then looked forward again.

"How are things going?" A fairly broad question that could be interpreted both personally or professionally ... or both.

"I'll 'ave ya know that small talk is a professional courtesy not many get," Bill pointed out at that smirk. It annoyed him a bit, but he shrugged it off and adjusted the sunglasses on his face.

"Thin's?" He ventured to guess just what that meant. "Life is life, mate. But, I did wanna grab ya and talk t'ya about the young woman who was attacked las' week." He'd written up the medical report and stuck it in his journal for the Ministry and the Order t'see. He wondered if Kingsley had read it or not.

Kingsley chuckled softly "I apologise. I've never been particularly good at small talk." Not an excuse really, but he'd just never felt the need to acquire that skill. He was always more interested in facts, in getting to the point rather sooner than later.

"There's been a rather large influx of reports these last couple of weeks. Which girl in particular are you referring to? And what kind of attack?" He figured it must've been a serious bodily attack of some sort for Strout to be involved, but the Auror department was always a busy place and it wasn't always easy to keep track of individual cases unless you were the Auror assigned.

"Ain't nothin', big guy," Bill teased with a grin. Now, Bill was no tiny man, but blimey, Shacklebolt was like a deisel. Not that Bill knew what that was or nothin'....

He sobered when Shacklebolt asked about the girl. "Death Eater," he answered.

This time Kingsley laughed. Yes, he knew he was both tall and broad, but being called 'big guy' was funny still. But the laugh cut off abruptly at the mention of Death Eaters.

It had been that case. Now he remembered it.

"I'm not on the case, but I'm sure it has high priority. What did you want to talk to me about it for?" Had nothing further happened in the case?

Bill paused to put his fingers through his own hair. He let off a sound that made him think of his horses and looked up at his colleague.

"That's the problem," he sighed out. "It ain't high priority 'cause it looks like it's amatuerish. The Ministry ain't takin' it seriously." How did he say this? "I know yer one of the best. I'd like ya t'help me with it. No one else gives a shit."

Kingsley didn't see it as unnecessary flattery, because he knew it was true. He was one of the best. He worked hard to be that. It annoyed him endlessly to hear that the case hadn't been put to high priority. Anybody with a sodding brain could see what it was.

"I can talk to the Aurors assigned and see what they're doing with it. Perhaps they're even looking to get rid of it." Kingsley really was busy enough as it was, but if they were going to let this case rot in a drawer, he'd rather be a bit more busy than letting that happen.

"Thank ya," Bill said, genuine. The breath of relief he let out wasn't to be missed, either, even if he wished he wasn't so relieved t'have a li'l help with all of this.

They'd talk legistics later. Now wasn't exactly the time. "Ya gonna get another piercin', too, while yer here?" he teased again, reachin' up to flip the man's earlobe a bit. Darin'? Sure. But, that was just Bill's way.

"Not a problem." Strout had obviously invested a lot of interest and concern in the case. A rare quality Kingsley met less and less in ministry workers, which was a disheartening thought.

A thought he was brought out of by the flick to his pierced earlobe. He jerked slightly in surprise, but didn't mind it really. It was rare anybody teased him these days, so it was oddly refreshing.

Kingsley chuckled "I doubt I will. One is enough, I think." And that one had more been a revolution against his parents than anything else. "Or what?" He wondered what had inspired the question actually.

"Or wha'? It's sexy!"

It wasn't a flirt or nothin', it was a simple fact. Earrings on certain men just looked good. Cedric wouldn't look good with one, though, the poor lad.

"Think I'd look good with one, then?" he asked, tuggin' at his own earlobe.

"Hah... I suppose." Of course it was sexy, else he hadn't kept it once he was past his adolescent attempts at revolution. Kingsley gave Strout a once over, still smiling a bit amused.

"Of course you would. It'd suit you, perhaps in another style though."

Bill clapped his colleague on one of his solid shoulders.

"Thanks, big guy," he said scruffily. "When ya free? I'll take yeh t'dinner, wine 'n dine ya, talk about dead Muggles, yaknow, all that romantic shit."

"Dancing too?" Kingsley asked drolly, far more entertained by this casual interaction than he'd been by anything else for a long while. And it was a good opportunity to relax a bit in good company, even if there was a professional edge to it, in concern with dead Muggles.

"I'm free now actually." He could also purchase a cloak tomorrow after all.

"Only if yeh wear a dress," Bill quipped, brows waggling playfully. He got the feeling that not many people played with Shacklebolt 'cause of his size, sort of how no one wanted to play with horses when they was just big puppy dogs.

"Ain'cha gotta get a cloak?" he asked. They could always do that first. Besides, new clothes sounded like a good idea anyway.

"Ah, no dancing then." Kingsley shook his head, grinning at the thought of him in a dress. The mental image was to say it mildly, hilarious and utterly ridiculous.

"I was going to get a cloak yes, but I doubt you would like to watch Gladrag's clerk flutter around me to find the right fabric and colour." Truth be told, it was something Kingsley didn't relish watching either.

"Since you invited, I'll leave the decision to you." He said, hoping Strout would choose dinner.

"And the problem with lamb would be exactly?" Kingsley asked curiously. he was almost an omnivore - to a certain extent - as long as it was well prepared.

While Bill's grin wasn't especially a perfect one, that didn't stop him from doing it anyway. "I knew I liked ya for some reason. So, I got lamb at mah place, or we can go t'one of these pubs 'n 'ave a sit, which, actually sounds better 'cause I ain't got no potatoes for soup."

With that, he began walking towards said pub, gesturing for his colleague to follow.

Kingsley followed along, still rather entertained by this chance meeting. Strout seemed rather relaxed and casual, and not at all intimidated in any way. Kingsley rather liked that, it was refreshing.

"Must have potatoes." He said, smiling as he strode alongside the slightly shorter man. "It's been a while since I was out last. Usually I end up whipping together something quick at home." Usually just bread though... and eating while reading reports, making notes...

Since the pub wasn't too far, they were there in no time at all. Bill pulled the door open, glancing over his shoulder as he spoke to Kingsley.

"Ya need t'get out more, then," he decided. "I'll take ya horse back ridin'. I got a horse that'll be big enough for ya, I think."

"Horse back riding?" That wasn't exactly what he'd thought of as a way of 'getting out more'. Kingsley followed Strout into the pub.

"I didn't know you had horses. I can't ride a horse." He'd tried to ride ponies when he was a child, but that was just those that were lead around in a circle and you sat on the back, pretending to be riding when in fact you were simply sitting on a living, breathing, moving chair. He'd always had the feeling that was exactly how those ponies were treated in such places.

"I'm sorry, can ya repeat that?"

Bill leaned in and just slightly up towards Kingsley, pressing his own ear towards him. "I must be gettin' hard a-hearin' 'cause I thought ya said ya couldn't do somethin'." Oh, Kingsley could ride. He had the build and health for it, and he definitely didn't strike Bill as someone who said he couldn't do something very often.

Kingsley laughed and patted Strout's shoulder firmly. It was indeed rare he admitted to being unable to do something. And it wasn't as if he thought he 'coudn't' do it, he just didn't think he could do it well and that it was inherently uncomfortable for a horse to have a rather big man on its back who didn't know how to ride properly.

"I'm just saying I've never done it before and would rather not expose a horse to that kind of experience.

"Mah boys can take ya," he promised. A ride along the countryside was always a good way to clear the head, but he didn't press any more than that.

In a pub, one simply sat anywhere, so Bill gestured to a booth. He would have chosen the bar, but people tended to want to listen in on other peoples' conversations at the bar.

"If you say so," Kingsley said and went to the indicated booth to sit down. It gave him a suitable view of the pub.

"And when were you planning on such an equestrian adventure?" He asked, a bit more curiously than he cared to admit. Because then he'd also have to admit that his life consisted entirely of work, or preparing for work... or thinking about work. He liked it that way, surely. But knew it was probably not entirely ... healthy to live like that.

Bill slid in to his respective seat and held up two fingers to a passing server to indicate he was picking up both their drinks.

"An equestrian adventure, huh?" he asked teasingly, rubbing a thoughtful hand on the scruff on his chin. "Any time we ain't both workin' I reckon." The server came over with pad and writing utensil to take their orders. She was cute, too. Bill smiled crookedly but charmingly at her.

"How ya doin'?" he asked, although he didn't really care.

She smiled back. "Good, thank you," she said, confident. God, that was always hot. "What can I get you gentlmen?"

"Such a time could be hard to find," Kingsley said with a touch of humour in his voice. It was the truth, at least for Kingsley. Then he leaned back in his seat and watched Strout charm the waitress, smiling a little bit.

"I'll just have the same as him. Lamb was it?" Kingsley turned his smile at Strout.

"Two racks o'lamb it is and potato soup," Bill said with a wicked click of his tongue and a wink, just to see her smile again. She wrote their orders down and tucked her hair behind her ear as she tried to remember what else they needed.

"And to drink?" she finally asked.

"I'll 'ave a Diet Root Beer," he answered, then looked to Kingsley to see what he wanted.

"Just water for me, thank you." Kinglsey replied with another kind smile at the girl. He really felt like having an ale, but a quick glance had already revealed to him what the pub had on tap and that wouldn't quite hit the spot. He knew he was a picky sort but didn't care.

As the bird walked away, Bill watched unabashedly. When she was in the kitchen again, he turned his attention back to Kingsley.

"Ya reckon if mah case had been a pretty waitress like that, it'd had more attention?" He wondered aloud.

Kingsley's lips quirked a little bit even if it basically wasn't entirely funny.

"I reckon. Although, they might not be in a hurry to solve it so they can keep it around longer... And I might not put much value on their findings, considering the level of distraction they would reach." He shrugged. It was extremely rare he let anything distract him while working. Or otherwise, since he was almost always working, even when he officially wasn't.

"It's frustrating at times to see how lightly some of my socalled colleagues take their work and responsibility. And how much they're influenced by the 'official' attitude coming from Fudge..."
