Library
Who: Roger Davies, Adrian Pucey, and OPEN
Where: Hogwarts Library
When: morning of Saturday, March 17, 1995
Rating: PG for language R for sex

Right after breakfast, Roger acquiesced and followed Adrian to the library to get their act together on the Transfiguration paper. They'd both chosen the Animagus transformation and been reading relevent research material since September. Adrian was right, it really was time to start knocking it into shape and finalizing the outline, so that they could write a first draft. McGonagall had promised to look over and comment on outlines until the coming Friday, and rough drafts till the end of March. After that, she would only accept finished papers. She had made it clear that with proper citation, development and proof, discussion, and conclusions, these papers should be at least 30 feet of parchment and not to exceed 50 feet.

This independent research paper could not only make or break one's end of year grade, it was also the most important work that McGonagall considered when accepting students into the 7th Year Trasfiguration class, over attendance, homework, and even actual transfiguration skill. The best papers also earned House points.

Roger pulled out his extrememly complicated and detailed outline. He'd left Intro and Conclusion empty but had his History, Magical Theories, Examples, and Purpose sections outlined to paragraph level. Looking at it again after ignoring it mostly since Christmas, Roger said to Adrian, "I've got tons of details, but no point to it. Let me see yours."

Adrian had seen those papers before, but it never ceased to amaze him the amount of energy Roger truly put into writing stuff like that, just in 'preparation' for writing a paper. Adrian made tons of notes too, but he went a bit more with intuition when he actually wrote. It was rare he used a fixed outline other than a rough overview to keep the red thread going in a paper.

He pulled out his notes that were sorted according to what they were about, surely, but not put meticulously into the final writing order. He had done his intro though, detailing the why's and how's and what's of what his purpose was with the paper...

"No purpose? But why did you want to write about Animagus transformation in the first place?" Adrian looked down at his intro. "I don't think you'd find the legal problems and implications of animagi transformation abilities and it's application in crime and in crime fighting..." Of course he'd chosen that approach, there was no way he couldn't have chosen it considering where he was planning on putting his future.

Roger rolled his eyes at his friend. "Because it's cool as bloody fuck, of course. Honestly, don't be dense."

He grabbed Adrian's introduction and read it quickly.

"So I'll do the the physical problems and implications of animagi transformation abilities and their applications in healing and medicine. Hmph, good." Roger handed the parchment back to Adrian, much relieved, then set about adjusting the parts of his outline most affected by the central thesis.

Adrian sniggered - softly of course, or Pince would have them out on their ears in a moment - and watched Roger work. A favourite pastime of his, to be honest; Watching Roger doing anything. It was soppy and rather pathetic, when you looked at it from an objective angle. But Adrian was as far from objective when it came to Roger, as the sun was from the moon.

Of course, he should be working too, connecting his notes into a coherent outline that would make sense to McG and that would be acceptable. He was very happy with his choice of thesis and was confident McG would find it an interesting read, even if he was sure she's probably read something like it before.

"Sounds good. I'll have to read it when you're done." Adrian finally leaned forward in his chair again and looked at his papers. If he really put his mind to it, he'd have it together in a couple of hours. But his mind was mostly guided by his hormones, which in turn were guided by his libido... that constantly affected and awake when Roger was around. It was bloody annoying and problematic, especially for his grades and general scolarly performance levels. But emotionally and physically it was simply fantastic. Adrian was looking at Roger again...

Roger rested his foot against Adrian's under the table, seated across from him. He liked touching Adrian as much as possible, and hoped it wasn't because he was afraid of losing him.

"Well, the most compelling area is the theories and anecdotes that a transfiguration heals. Wonder if McGonagall would let me scratch her arm then transfigure herself for me and see. Or, get a scratch as a cat and turn back to human form. The discussions and arguments about that alone would fill fifty feet of parchment."

Roger wrote and edited his introduction intently for a good while, conscious of Adrian's gaze, but comfortable enough with Adrian to not react to it.

Then he was ready for a bit of a break. He slid his two feet introduction rough draft across while slipping his foot out of his shoe.

While Adrian read, he lightly stroked his big toe around Adrian's ankle.

Roger really was an over-achiever in many respects, or just obsessed. Adrian doubted he'd ever be able to write 50 feet of parchment on that kind of subject.

He accepted the introduction and started reading it when he felt Roger's toe against his foot. He'd purr, if he could. Instead his lips tugged up into a small smirk, eyes still fixed on the text. He read a little further, rather impressed with the quick but very thorough work his boyfriend had managed in such a short time.

Almost done, he glanced over the top of the parchment at Roger, arching an eyebrow. "We're not done yet..."

Roger made the cutest pout he possibly could.

"We have until Friday."

He swirled his big toe in a circle around Adrian's ankle bone.

Adrian valiantly tried to ignore the pout. Which was of course impossible, since it was formed by Roger's lips, which in turn brought on many very distracting associations. Sometimes it was a curse to have a vivid and lively imagination.

Not to mention dirty imagination.

"So?" Adrian asked, pretending he wasn't affected by the pout and the touches to his ankle that were sending tiny little thrills up his leg and up his spine. "No reward before it's done." His voice dropped to a low ... dark whisper.

Roger pursed his lips out a bit more before letting them turn into a smirk. "You haven't even told me what my reward is going to be."

And just for that, he withdrew his foot and put it back into his shoe.

"What's your main conclusion going to be then?"

Roger was being evil, Adrian decided, abusing the power he knew he had over Adrian and Adrian's libido.

Adrian also loved Roger being evil. It was one of the small pleasures of life. Or perhaps not so 'small'.

"You'll know what the reward is, when you get it, Roger." Adrian said teasingly and turned his eyes back on the introduction in his hands. "My conclusion will be somewhat along the lines "It sucks to be an Auror if you're looking for for a criminal who's an unregistered Animagus. Especially if the crime was committed in Animagus form. Also that it can be awesome, depending on your Animagus form, to be an Auror with Animagus skills and that, once again depending on the form, you will be especially suitable for certain tasks." Adrian spoke, not really reading what Roger had written before he was done.

"I imagine I will," Roger said, trying not to leer too much in the library.

Listening to Adrian, he replied, "Yours is so definite. Mine has to be... And therefore, more research needs to be done! Hm, perhaps I should write it as though it were a proposal for a research project. No. She'll want something definite. Like yours."

Roger blew out an impatient breath and let his quill drop from his fingers, then proceeded to look away and stretch his arms over his head, pretending to be unaware of the effect this might have on Adrian.

He hated to admit it, how much more challenging healing was when compared with Quidditch. It was bloody annoying that everyone else had been right about what was best for him.

"Then focus on one or two areas where you can draw definite conclusions." Adrian's eyes crept up over the edge of the parchment again, taking in the lovely stretch Roger's body went into.

Damn him.

"Start with a general run-through of all the medical implications you can think of, then pick out and focus on those one or two areas where you then go in depth, and finally draw conclusions based on only those." Adrian laid the parchment down on the table again and pushed it across towards Roger.

"The areas I'd like to research personally... like animal verses insect transformation. Gods. Can you imagine if you worked on it for years and performed a successful animagus transformation, only to find yourself... a bug?" Roger shuddered then snorted softly. "Or how about a fish?"

Suddenly he went still, his mind racing. "Wonder if..." he said softly... to himself.

"Hah, a fish." Adrian chuckled. He doubted though that it worked like that. He'd never heard of a case where somebody turned into a fish or another other animal that wouldn't be able to move and survive on the ground in normal air.

"Wonder if what?" He then asked curiously, the look in Roger's eyes revealing that the Ravenclaw brain was going into overdrive.

Following the thought train to it's inevitable end Roger quirked a grimace at Adrian. "Don't suppose they'd let us practice on Azkaban inmates. Shame though. Controlled conditions and all."

Sadly, it was inhumane, and thus the progress of the Magical Healing was thwarted once again.

"Ah well. It's just a paper to write. I don't have to solve all the world's problems today." He leaned across the table and spoke in a low suggestive tone. "I just have to satisfy you."

Roger's comment about experimenting on Azkaban inmates made Adrian pause, not reacting instantly to his words, or tone.

"How on earth would you practice on them? You can't force them to be Animagi, and I doubt there are many among them who are Animagi. And even if some where, they'd hardly reveal it since they'd be unregistered in the first place. And why...?" That was just distasteful to him, even if they might be guilty of some sort of crime. Adrian wrinkled his nose.

"And you have to satisfy McGonagall, not me, with this."

"But Heron insists that you can force a human to animal transfiguration," Roger whispered stridently, warming to the subject.

"Granted, he was cracked and speaking four centuries ago, but Stuart's diary states that on several occasions he was injured, he changed into his animal form to escape his enemies, and when he resumed human form, his injuries were healed."

"So, what if a patient came into St. Mungo's suffering terrible burns, or magical bites, or any injury that was going to take weeks of magical healing; and what if instead, the Healers simply transfigured him into, say, a rat or a pig or a dog, all of which have some properties similar to humans; and then changed him back to his original form? What if that completely healed him? Wouldn't it be worth practicing on convicted murderers?"

[info]dark_at_heart
2008-05-19 02:34 pm UTC (link)
"Yes, animal transfiguration! But not Animagus transformation. You retain your mind as an Animagus, but as a human transfigured to an animal, you are that animal. And no, even if it's a convicted murderer, it's inhuman and degrading to force anybody into experiments against their will." That was something Adrian felt very strongly about, and it showed in his tone.

Nobody should be forced against their will to accept something like that. Then you were no better than a murderer yourself.

"There's always people who would volunteer, for payment of course. I see no reason to abuse your power over a certain group of people, simply because they committed a crime. Azkaban is punishment enough, or don't you think the Dementors make quite sure their lives are miserable to such an extent it leaves them marked for life?"

"No. Heron said the animagus transformation. Calm down. I know it's inhumane. But it's an utter waste to have them rotting in Azkaban. My mother always said they should be made to work at something for the good of society. Don't muggles make them build roads or something?"

Roger smiled, trying to lighten the mood. He didn't want to argue about sodding transfiguration. He wanted to shag. But it wasn't even noon yet and it looked to be a perfect day to get out of doors.

"So maybe there's no use for animagus magic in Healing. I don't bloody know or care."

The pout was back.

"I still don't think you can force a human into Animagus transformation. You can force one out of it, knowing the right spell and being powerful enough. But the Animagus transformation is an internal magical process, directed by your personality and your intent." Adrian was more than ready to discuss that subject, but it looked like Roger wasn't keen on it.

"I don't know... I've never heard of it here in England. And I don't think they do in India either. But you can't compare building roads or anything, to being used in a medical experiment that invades and transforms your body, even if it's temporary. And you'd have to inflict damage on the person too, to test that particular theory. That wouldn't be any better than the crimes they were put in there for in the first place." Adrian frowned and leaned back in his seat, a little bit surprised that Roger had even thought of such a thing.

"And letting them out of Azkaban would be too big a risk. Heck, it's not even safe enough to keep them there, since it seems they can just walk out of the place."

"It's magic, Adrian," Roger said, as though explaining to a small child. "Anything's possible. But point taken, the more modern and more esteemed sources merely speak of healing an animagus, and the similarities between animagus magic and self-healing."

He shot his boyfriend a coy look warming up to the argument despite himself. "I never said I condoned it, forced human experimentation. Of course not. But prisoners no longer have the same rights as free citizens. They'd be cheaper and easier to keep if you just imperioed the lot of them."

Roger didn't have a lot of sympathy for the residents of Azkaban, and he was a bit shocked that Adrian seemed to.

Adrian literally gaped and paled at that last comment. Roger couldn't be serious. He had no idea what to say without it coming out as appalled and angry. And he didn't want to fight over it.

"I can't believe you said that." It felt like he had a rock of ice in his stomach, and he hated that it was something Roger had said that had put it there. Wisely, Adrian didn't say more, instead gathering his papers before something he'd regret blurted out.

That's torn it... and there went my reward... Roger thought in dismay at Adrian's reaction. He'd inherited a hard cold streak from his mother. What she considered merely practical might turn a man's stomach.

That didn't excuse Roger goading Adrian because he didn't feel like studying, didn't feel like being a Healer, didn't feel like dancing to Adrian's tune for some stupid reward.

Shut up, you tit! You know you want to shag his bones off!

"I didn't. It wasn't me," he began lamely. Then he leaned forward again. "It was this incredibly randy idiot who is tired of transfiguration notes."

"Idiot is about right," Adrian muttered, having gathered his papers.

"Why not simply turn them all into rats and put them in small cages, perhaps take them out every 10 years or so if they behave?" He shouldn't be mad about this, and shouldn't be prickly about it. But he just couldn't comprehend that Roger might think it a good idea to do something like that, to ... 'rape' people's minds in order to control them and keep them docile.

"How can you even be sure that everybody in there is in fact guilty? Black spent 12 years in there for a crime he apparently didn't commit... how would you feel if you'd used him for little experiments, imperoed him... forced him against his will ... huh?" Adrian got up from his chair, still speaking softly and low so Pince wouldn't have a fit. "Just because they're criminals, Roger, doesn't mean they're not humans and deserve to be treated with at least a speck of humanity and decency. Otherwise we're no better than Death Eaters."

Roger began to smile when Adrian called him an idiot, but the smile died on his lips when Adrian... freaked right on out. He tried to grab his hand but Adrian had already packed his things and risen out of reach.

"No, I'm not saying that!" Adrian snapped, also still in a whisper "But saying things like that makes me wonder if you really mean it would be a good idea to do things like that. And I find even the thought sickening. Here I thought I was the cold and calous one..."

It was an immensely bad idea to have this kind of discussion in the library, since Adrian was on the verge of raising his voice and then Pince would have his hide and he'd have to grovel to be allowed to use the library again. But on the other hand, perhaps it was better he was forced to put a damper on himself, his temper ran far too hot, too fast and anywhere else he'd be yelling... and he didn't want to yell at Roger. Not even over this.

"And who was it put Black there? Oh. Let me think. Aurors put him there, an innocent man for 12 years." Roger hissed like a Slytherin in a tizzy.

"Well that was your mistake, wasn't it? A Healer has be cold and callous!" Which was one of the multitude of reason that Roger was still unsure he really wanted to become a Healer. Who the hell wanted to be around sick people all day?

Er... they didn't? Roger was brought up short. That didn't make any sense. Neither did what they were arguing about. And he'd be fucked if he knew what that was.

Adrian left before Roger could yell at him, get up and shove him, knock some sense into his fat head, smash him against the wall and smother his face with hard angry desperate kisses.

Whipping up his quill again, Roger wrote quickly, still wondering whether he'd picked a fight with Adrian, or Adrian picked it with him.

Adrian my love,

It is your mistake in thinking that I'm this nice person that's too good for you. Or whatever the hell it is you're thinking. I don't think you're cold and callous. Why do you think that? Where is this coming from?

I think you're warm and snuggly, actually___

Roger rolled his eyes at himself and crumbled up the parchment.

He had to talk to Adrian. But gods, the way Adrian had looked at him, like he was some slimy potions ingredient. Surely Adrian knew he was taking the piss. He hadn't acted like it though.

Despite the way they'd been forcing transfigurations on animals for years in class, Roger could never do it... for scientific research... on humans. He'd been thinking about a suitable conclusion for his paper. He had more than enough to show McGonagall.

Packing his bags, Roger set out to find the elusive moody teenage wizard, starting with Adrian's hideaway.

Adrian made a bee-line for Ravenclaw tower, then their dorm to drop off his notes and then finally up to his little alcove right under where the roof began in the tower. Roger hadn't followed him, that much he'd realised once he was ascending the stairs up to the tower. It made him sad and he knew he'd been an arse. He just wasn't sure how to fix it without having to apologise... and he didn't feel like he 'had' to apologise. They'd both been arses.

Flopping bonelessly and quite dramatically into the alcove, Adrian let out a huffed sigh. There went his plans for a hot saturday in bed behind closed curtains and privacy charms, with Roger. He'd even contemplated cherry ice-cream as a special reward, but that was out too he guessed.

Hugin who'd been sleeping on the headboard of Adrian's bed had been startled awake by the sound of books and notes hitting the bed, and then the sight of his master flouncing out of the dorm room again. A few moments passed, then the bird followed its master and soon landed on his knee with an inquisative 'ka!'

"Shut up, Hugin." Adrian growled, staring out of the window. Hugin did shut up, a little surprised at the tone. Then Adrian reached out and stroked the raven's head and back gently. It wasn't Hugin's fault after all. Forgiving his master instantly for the reprimand, Hugin let out small purry sounds of pleasure as he enjoyed the petting.

Replaying their conversation over and over, Roger walked along slowly, getting sadder and more worried with each step. He was madly in love with Adrian now, because he knew they could work through any arguments. Only they hadn't. Yet.

They'd been like little lovebirds. It would be sickening if it wasn't so wonderful.

Roger set his bag down when he caught sight of Adrian in his nook... petting his bird. A tightness clenched a fist around his heart. Without a word he crouched down near and fixed his gaze on Hugin.

Adrian was deep in thoughts, contemplating exactly where things went wrong today, and why the heck it had deteriorated so fast in a fight. On the other hand, they'd not fought over anything since they got together before Christmas... Perhaps it was just time?

Had he been curbing himself around Roger, letting things slide off him and bending to avoid conflict? Was he really that afraid of messing things up with Roger and of chasing him away? But didn't Roger like him for who he was, arrogant and abbrasive and at times totally prattish? Never backing down, always blunt with the truth and sharp with his tongue?

You really must be in love to change that... just so you can keep him. Adrian knew that. Knew he loved Roger, finally knew how it felt 'to love'. And he 'was' afraid of losing it, very much so.

Hugin heard the other human approach, one eye open to keep an eye on who it was. When he saw who it was he rolled out a low 'kra', in a mix of friendly greeting and continued pleasure at the slow strokes over his feathers.

Hugin let out another soft 'kra' sensing there was some sort of tension between his master and the other.

Adrian's fingers on Hugin's feathers stilled and he glanced at Roger. There was no way he couldn't accept the apology... and no way around giving one of his own. He'd been quite ready for more fighting because he was still appalled at the thought of using prisoners for experiments, of forcing them...

But Roger looked like he was very sorry... And Adrian couldn't resist it.

"M'sorry too," he muttered, moving his hand from Hugin to stroke over Roger's shoulder and neck instead.

At first Roger's lips rose in a smile, but the feel of Adrian's touch filled him with such emotion he had to look down to hide the burn in his eyes. He'd really been afraid Adrian had some real yelling to do.

You do? Roger wondered as he opened his mouth to Adrian's tongue The warmth and taste sending a hot jolt down his middle. He stroked underneath it with his own tongue, caressing and loving it.

Hugin cawed and quickly escaped Adrian's knee when the two humans moved and got very much closer. He landed on the sill of the small window, looking curiously at the couple.

Adrian pushed anything other than feeling Roger out of his mind as he was kissed deeply, a thrill going down his spine at the moan coming from Roger. He gasped lightly at the touch to his nipple and pulled Roger closer, moaning too. He leaned back as much as he could, pulling Roger even closer, wanting to feel all of him.

There was a sharp caw but Roger focused in on pinching the nipple through Adrian's shirt, letting himself be pulled over... and down. All thoughts fled. Words could no longer get in the way of how he felt about Adrian.

His hand roamed upward across Adrian's chest then up around his neck as Roger hungrily demanded his turn at dominating the kiss, at taking pleasure from Adrian's mouth.

The hand at Adrian's back curved to hold onto the jut of Adrian's hip bone. Just he feel of it against his palm, though covered in fine wool, sent a jolt of electricity into his balls.

"So sodding sexy," he murmured.

"Yes, you are," Adrian murmured softly against Roger's lips, stroking his hands firmly down to cup Roger's arse, flexing into the firm muscle through the fine fabric of Roger's trousers. He could feel all of Roger now, feel his warmth all over, and it was perfect. Nothing better.

The alcove was really too small for this, but Adrian didn't care, hungrily kissing Roger, pulling at his shirt to get underneath it, and he moaned when he was finally rewarded with the feel of smooth warm skin. Pleasure burned through him, making him hot and hard.
