Getting back into the groove
Who: Dean Thomas and Open to anyone at Hogwarts
Where: The gardens behind the greenhouses
When: Late afternoon
Rating/warnings: PG for now.

The light was just perfect to create long deep shadows, and it hadn't taken Dean many moments to decide it was time for a few sketches.

Wandering a bit around outside, he finally decided on the gardens behind the greenhouses. Both because of the strange gnarled trees that grew there, and because it was fairly secluded. He wasn't looking for company in particular.

Dean sat down on one of the stone benches and drew out his pencils, looking around for a suitable subject to draw. An old tree leaning on one of the low stone walls that divided the different parts of the garden, looked interesting. The snow must've weighed it down further at some point, exposing the roots on one side as the tree had tilted a little. Dean started drawing and was soon engulfed.

Given that two of Blaise's favorite people were a bit distracted these days, Blaise had to find other ways to distract himself, so he'd decided to go for a walk. He'd walked along the edge of the lake for a while, remembering watching the Champions jumping in just a few days ago.

If Dumbledore had asked him to be anyone's "Thing to be missed," he'd have told the old geezer to stuff it. Then again, it would be kind of cool to be saved someone like that...

Still lost in his thoughts as he began to make his way back up to the school, he didn't notice the other boy until he was almost right next to him. He'd seen him around the school before. He was fairly certain the other was a Gryffindor. At least, he was fairly certain he'd seen him hanging out with Potter before.

He stood an watched him for a moment. He'd never seen someone drawing before. At least, nothing bigger than a doodle. And the other boy seemed very distracted by what he was doing.

Once Dean was well into drawing, it was sometimes hard to draw his attention away from the subject and the lines he was creating on the paper, eyes going back and forth between them.

Subconsciously he'd heard the other person aproach and even registered the persistent presence close by, but it took a while for him to consciously react to it. Not before a big cloud obscured the light for a bit.

He looked at the other boy, a little startled to find him actually looking at Dean "Oh! Hey..." Dean was fairly sure this was a Slytherin, one of the people around Malfoy. But the name...

When Dean turned towards Blaise and realized he was there, he nodded. "You're rather good at that. You must draw a lot?"

He didn't move from where he was standing. After all, this was a Gryffindor. He might not want to talk.

Dean's ears heated a little at the compliment. Even if he heard it often enough, he'd never really get used to it.

"Thanks..." He looked down at the drawing and couldn't help rubbing his thumb over a shadow that needed to be smoothed.

"I guess I do... I like it." He looked back at the other boy with a light smile.

When Dean smiled, Blaise took a few steps forward to look at what he'd been drawing. "Where'd you learn it?" he asked, his voice softer now.

"Uh... I've always drawn a lot, but dad is an architect so he drew a lot with me and taught me stuff. And then at school... Muggle school." Dean expected some sort of reaction to the last, because well... this was a Slytherin and he'd probably realise Dean was at least part Muggle, and all knew how Slytherins felt about those.

Blaise tried to hide the sneer. Arthur wouldn't like it if he found out that Blaise had taken Draco and Theo and Thai's beliefs to heart, but in Slytherin, you either adapted, or you hid.

"Architect...that's a cool profession. What sorts of things does he build?"

Dean saw it nonetheless, even if it was really faint. He was just used to studying people, their faces... when doing sketches of them. But he'd not expected anything else and at least the Slytherin wasn't being openly hostile. And Dean really believed in being polite and kind until you were given a reason not to be.

"Houses. Residential...it 'is' cool. I might become an architect myself." Dean shrugged. He was still so very unsure about what to do when he left Hogwarts.

"Not a lot of call for that in the wizarding world, though," Blaise said. After all, what else would one do with those sorts of skills as a wizard?

"Why not? Houses need to be drawn before building, don't they? There's structural issues and aestetics to think about even with Wizarding buildings..." Dean honestly didn't think you just slapped up a house with magic without considering how things stuck together and how it looked.

On the other hand... some of the houses he'd seen in the Wizarding World kind of looked like they had just been conjured up as a spur of the moment thing.

"But I'm not sure yet what I want to do... There's not much money in being an artist I guess." Dean shrugged lightly, because that was a silly dream.

"Yes, but most people in our world already have a family home. And few families are having more than one or two children, so there isn't a lot of call for new magical homes... Still, you never know."

Blaise was silent for a moment, then glanced up at Dean. "So...if not art, what, then?"

"Uhm..." Dean shrugged again, looking down at the sketch in his lap.

"Perhaps Cursebreaking, I'm not really sure. What about you?" Dean looked up again, at Blaise, wondering what a Slytherin might want to do with his life. Was he rich? Dean didn't know, but had a feeling that many of the Slytherins came from old and rich families.

Or perhaps it was just Malfoy.

"Not sure. I haven't really thought about it much. Probably the Ministry. Ar--er, my dad works there. Though if you wanted, I could put in a good word with my brother for you. He's a cursebreaker. Pretty cool, actually." Blaise smiled for the first time since seeing the boy at the thought of his brother.

The smile brightened Blaise's face and made it look much more friendly to Dean's eyes. He kinda liked it and smiled back, wondering if the other boy might let him draw him some time.

"Your dad's at the Ministry? And you have a brother who's a Cursebreaker? That's very cool!" That was not at all what Dean had expected. "Does your brother work here in Britain?" Dean thought they always worked in some exotic country far away, one of the things that had him slightly hesitant towards the profession, even if it was cool.
